Pretty sure Oedipus is a D&D player character: - Beats random travelers to death over some insults - Turns out one of them is an important main quest NPC - DM pulls out a riddle to keep Oedipus busy while figuring out what to do next - Player figures out a loophole; Exploits it to stall to the end of the session then Googles the answer - Actually succeeds, becomes the king - Uses his influence to persuade the local Divination Wizard to waste all his spell slots on revealing the main plot - DM gives up, blurts out "You're a motherfucker" - This accidentally resolves the entire storyline in one perfect move, players ask if that was on purpose - "Oh uh yeah, of course" - Players treat it as the best campaign ever - Thread ends up on forums for the next 2000 years
You laugh but my best campaign was when I dropped the BBEG I had planned and went with an NPC that the players basically invented out of whole cloth. I did because they were way more invested in their imagery bad guy than in my imagery bad guy (I admit I tried waving the original under their noses a few times but they all loudly declared he must be a decoy).
I'm still not convinced The Oracle isn't actually just an introverted witch that placed curses upon people for talking to her. "Oracle, tell me how to make the greatest sandwich of all time." "You wanna talk about sandwiches? Let's talk about sandwiches and how you're gonna *choke to DEATH on a SANDWICH!* "
I recently started rewatching campaign 1 of Critical Role. I full on squeed when I someone in the chat named Dailydael asked what was going on, and that they would have to look into this D&D thing. Wonder if they ever got into it? Just thought I'd share something I found awesome.
I came for the D&D videos via Colville, but honestly I think I’m enjoying your storytelling even more. I love the personality you put into these old myths! 😄👍🏻
World events, politics, pandemics... these things do not require my attention. A new video on MonarchsFactory!?!? Now that REQUIRES my attention! I particularly loved the production and editing on this. Play all the parts, sister! It's all you. Of course, now I have to go watch the parody video, Oh For Tuna (MIsheard Lyrics), yet another time. Ah the golden wild west days of UA-cam. You remember. You were there. What a wacky ride it's been, hey?
Excellent video as usual. Thank you for the way you passionately tell these stories from mythology. When anyone asks us where they can go to learn about mythology (a great place to go for campaign ideas) we send them to you.
Oracle: You're going to marry your mother Oedipus: What? That's crazy. *proceeds to marry a woman roughly the age his mother would be* Jocasta: *Turns out to be his mother* Oedipus: *Surprised Pikachu face*
My favourite subversion of the Sphinx story is a one-off scene in Terry Pratchett's Pyramid, where not only does the protagonist get the Sphinx to give him the riddle's answer, he then goes onto to deconstruct the absurdity of the whole thing and how it's not even internally consistent in its metaphor.
No joke, one of my doodles for the original version of this video was just a direct quote from that bit of the book - sadly didn't fit in with this take on the telling so much
I was cracking up so hard when you gave the ending a, very appropriate, song. I was imagining that exact song building up as it was getting to the part where Oedipus is told the story of his birth and right when I imagined it would crescendo you started singing. I HAVE TEARS!
Hey Dael, long time viewer, first time commenter (iirc) Thank you so so much for pretty much everything you put on here, it's always a great pleasure seeing your take on basically everything You consistently cheer me up and make me think about things from a new perspective. You're also damn funny as hell. Thanks for the recharge, and I hope you're doing well. Take care =)
I love your story telling style, your drawings, your sense of humor, your expansive knowledge of myths and legends, and your RPG GM advice. You are also very pretty.
This is one of my favourite stories off Greek Myth, in fact I studied Oedipus Rex as one of my three plays in Classical Civilisations A-Level and it is such a brilliant story. Plus it's followed by the tale of Antigone and it has so many fantastic characters and lessons within it. Thank you for telling this one, I was wondering about your take on this particular story.
You're right about "sphinx" meaning "strangler," according the Online Etymology Dictionary. It comes from "sphingein," meaning "to squeeze or bind," which is also the origin of the word "sphincter"!
It was! I bought it to be a more everyday cape than my red one. It's vintage, french, and has a sort of sandy coloured tartan lining - been handy when I've been cold around the house. :)
I could not for the life of me figure out what was different about you in this video for so long... and then it clicked, you just had straight hair in this video! It looks really good!
You want to talk about recharging? Let's talk about recharging! The thing I needed most this morning was the drawing at 7:46 of Oedipus with a nice big ol' poking stick.
If we're looking for a cheerful note to end this on, what about the theme song Tom Lehrer wrote for the Oedipus Rex movie in 1959? It is ever so cheerful. Catchy, too.
This was one of my favourites, I like the ones, that I thought I knew more of based on the modern snippets that haven't entered the collective conscious, but turns out I knew nothing of.
"When he sees a big stick and thinks _Ooh, that looks like a good big stick._ " That's such a mood for anytime I've been outside since achieving bipedalism.
I wake up with a splitting headache, Dael's hair is new, the comments soud like aliens... did I get transported into a different reality while I slept?
I hope you get to this. I saw the video and I have to pass along the most profound gift my orchestra teacher gave me. The opera is called Oedipus Tex, it is about a cowboy that kills the king of the rodeo and marries the queen of the rodeo... @ Hope you all enjoy.
"They said I would have killed my father and married my own mother, so I run away from those I was assured were not my real parents, and now I killed a man old enough to be my father and married a woman old enough to be my mother. Prophecy averted." Also, pretty lucky that Creon didn't have anything worthwile to ask to the oracle before.
Why does your riddle solving voice sound like a mix between mentok the mindtaker and reducto... You know now that I think about it I guess that was the same voice actor... Wow
So how old was Jacasta when she squeezed out her little daddy-killer? Because the boy was old enough to then get her up the duff three times. There's a bit of cradle snatching in there somewhere.
I actually never noticed before that the creature has wings when it plummets to death. Why would it kill itself, instead of just flying away to annoy someone else?
I forgot to tell you all to #stayfe! #Stayfe everyone.
#Stayfe yourself you wonderful content creator
MonarchsFactory U2! Thanks for story time :)
Believe it or not, a version of 2:09 - 2:44 happened to me recently.
No promises!!!
#stayfe!
like wise friend! OwO

"or sometimes just while traveling and he sees a good big stick". there has never been a better description of humanity!
I'm still not convinced The Oracle isn't actually just an introverted witch that placed curses upon people for talking to her.
"Oracle, tell me how to make the greatest sandwich of all time."
"You wanna talk about sandwiches? Let's talk about sandwiches and how you're gonna *choke to DEATH on a SANDWICH!* "
that cut off "motherfu--" is the funniest thing I've heard all week omg
"Corinth?! OH MOTHERFU-"
OOh that looks like a good big stick
Me, every time
Dael's new haircut is awesome.
I kind of like how you're allowed to ask the Oracle a question, but good luck getting a straight answer.
That rendition of O Fortuna was *chef kiss*
I recently started rewatching campaign 1 of Critical Role. I full on squeed when I someone in the chat named Dailydael asked what was going on, and that they would have to look into this D&D thing. Wonder if they ever got into it?
Just thought I'd share something I found awesome.
Do you remember which episode and time?
I came for the D&D videos via Colville, but honestly I think I’m enjoying your storytelling even more. I love the personality you put into these old myths! 😄👍🏻
As your video was wrapping up, I was whistling a tune... the same tune that you started humming. Opera is a powerful thing!
So happy to have you back at telling tales!
What a birthday present: my favorite content creator telling the story of my favorite Greek myth.
Happy birthday!
Loved your O Fortuna musical number. XD
World events, politics, pandemics... these things do not require my attention.
A new video on MonarchsFactory!?!? Now that REQUIRES my attention!

Love the characterisation of the Oracle being a bit of a socially starved gossip.
Always great to hear your version of a well known myth!
Dael, awesome opera, worth it!
Oracle: You're going to marry your mother
Oedipus: What? That's crazy.
*proceeds to marry a woman roughly the age his mother would be*
Jocasta: *Turns out to be his mother*
Oedipus: *Surprised Pikachu face*
OMG "Corint, Oh MOtherf...." with only that you killed me
Good to see you Dael, hope you're well! Stayfe!

Wonderful video, the sound quality was fantastic!
Thank you very much.
Thank you Dael, yours will now be the version I regard as canon .
It was FORTUNAte that we got to hear you sing.
Very nice retelling. I'm recharged!
Damn, Dael! Great pipes!
Can I humbly request a mythological dive into Lycaon of Arcadia? Great channel!
You have a great voice Dael!
"and then Freud decided that Oedipus meant that someone wanted to lay with their own mum" nice one Freud
Time stamp?
O Fortuna, excellent choice
Love the singing.
I was cracking up so hard when you gave the ending a, very appropriate, song. I was imagining that exact song building up as it was getting to the part where Oedipus is told the story of his birth and right when I imagined it would crescendo you started singing. I HAVE TEARS!
The singing into the microphone while holding it by the tripod was a delight.
Thank you - you told that really well
I love your videos!! I woke up and smiled a lot when I saw this in my feed

You are a joy. Thanks for the video :D
Not sure who enjoyed this more. Your viewers watching it or you making it. Doesn't matter. Everybody wins!
These videos have definitely given me extra energy during these times. I look forward to new ones!
Good singing, love your content
Great Video!! Keep up the good work!! 😁
I love your story telling style, your drawings, your sense of humor, your expansive knowledge of myths and legends, and your RPG GM advice. You are also very pretty.
Wow Best. Video yet.
You straightened your hair! I like it!
(riddle of the sphinx by the mechanisms begins playing in the distance)
I first red Oedipus Rex when I was in the fourth grade and it has been one of my favorite Greek tragedies, your retelling of it only makes it better!
It was Father's Day last week in the States.. missed opportunity lol
Nice vid and your hair looks great :)
1:40
I WISHED that the Oracle talked like that all the time!
Oracle is from New Jersey apparently.
You're right about "sphinx" meaning "strangler," according the Online Etymology Dictionary. It comes from "sphingein," meaning "to squeeze or bind," which is also the origin of the word "sphincter"!
...
Linguistics makes me uncomfortable
Absolutely loved this video. Thank you so much Dael. And was that a heavy cloak/cape you were wearing?
It was! I bought it to be a more everyday cape than my red one. It's vintage, french, and has a sort of sandy coloured tartan lining - been handy when I've been cold around the house. :)
@@MonarchsFactory I love that you wanted an 'everyday cape'. You are amazing 🤣
Hair on fleek!!!
I could not for the life of me figure out what was different about you in this video for so long... and then it clicked, you just had straight hair in this video! It looks really good!
Great story time.
Can't wait to see how things work out for Oedipus' son, Indominus.
OHMAGOODNESS It took me today long to realize the channel name was a play on your last name. That's hilarious.
Girl, you are just wonderful, you know that?
Olim lacu colueram, olim pulcher extitaram, dum cignus ego feuram.
My favorite...
You want to talk about recharging? Let's talk about recharging!
The thing I needed most this morning was the drawing at 7:46 of Oedipus with a nice big ol' poking stick.
I always feel recharged after listening to Dael!
I'm glad to see you again. I was getting worried there. Do stay safe. What I got from this is that fate is a horrible git and not to be believed in.
I love your stories and your storytelling style so much! This made my afternoon! Cheers
Eyyy a mythology vid! I like these! I like your other videos to but I also like these!
I had a friend who wrote an essay about Oedipus entitled "Oedipus Wrecks".
car go woowoo
Love this myth! Delphi prophecies are my favorite, and who doesn't love a good riddle!
Dael!! What happened to the curls?!
Oedipus Rex was a kindly old king because he loved his mother.
Even his enemies had to admit that he loved his mother.
sphinx be like: show your work
"When he sees a big stick and thinks _Ooh, that looks like a good big stick._ "
That's such a mood for anytime I've been outside since achieving bipedalism.
Like your hair. It's very pretty. *Thumbs up*
Not enough praise for "O Fortuna"
I can’t hear O FORTUNA without thinking of the misheard lyrics.
Love the cut takes. Sometimes the simplest thing seems way too hard to get right
"Accidental Incest" is the name of my Mike and the Mechanics cover band.
So Oedipus Rex, basically the story of Oedipus but told with dinosaurs cool :)
I wake up with a splitting headache, Dael's hair is new, the comments soud like aliens... did I get transported into a different reality while I slept?
My head still hurts, but the comments make more sense and the vid's great!
"This doesn't seem very happy." You're alternative personality is still new to Greek mythology, isn't she?
Nice singing voice!
Your hair looks great today!
Wasn't he shoved in a chess with he's heals spiked?
Hooray it's the tale of the first mother hecker
I hope you get to this. I saw the video and I have to pass along the most profound gift my orchestra teacher gave me. The opera is called Oedipus Tex, it is about a cowboy that kills the king of the rodeo and marries the queen of the rodeo... @ Hope you all enjoy.
I shall never know the joy of emailing these to my grandma, for she has no email.
Oh god, the O Fortuna is giving me flashbacks to 20 years ago in school choir. As much as I hated it I still probably know at least half the lyrics.
Digging the lockdown hairdo😂, nice to know I'm not alone.
So did he took the offer in a flash? In a flash? In a flash? In a flash? In a flash?
"They said I would have killed my father and married my own mother, so I run away from those I was assured were not my real parents, and now I killed a man old enough to be my father and married a woman old enough to be my mother.
Prophecy averted."
Also, pretty lucky that Creon didn't have anything worthwile to ask to the oracle before.
So, I'mma need to throw some money at you for a mad mix-tape of you singing your favorites.
HAIR
looks good
Why does your riddle solving voice sound like a mix between mentok the mindtaker and reducto... You know now that I think about it I guess that was the same voice actor... Wow
So how old was Jacasta when she squeezed out her little daddy-killer? Because the boy was old enough to then get her up the duff three times. There's a bit of cradle snatching in there somewhere.
Can we get more Singing Dael?
With bonus Orff for the same low price, schweet.
