To be completely honest, this game does deserve much more popularity.
The good thing which I loved about this game was because it was being itself in a sense which makes the game unlike any other. The detail of the game is amazing and I'm glad that 4A Games have made this project a reality

Effeect, I have to agree with you, too many games try and copy popular franchises. This could have easily tried to be a Russian version of Fallout but I have to say what I have seen so far has impressed me, I need to play a good game again soon and this is on order and arriving in three weeks! So here's hoping I enjoy this as much as I did Fallout and TLOU

Popularity, in my opinion, is bad. Popularity brings corporate demand to game studios and can ruin the awe and wonder of this game and it's story. It's because they have remained "un-popular" that they were able to fulfil a promising and faithful game series generated from the original beautiful novel. And thankfully we had the honor of the games being co-written by the author who wrote, said, books.
I feel if it were up to corporate, they would have forced the author to write their own narrative or even boot him out entirely and hire someone else and possibly whore out the series. Look at Fallout 76. Classic example of corporate interference and the lust for money.

Now this isn't confirmed at least I don't know if it's confirmed but the filters will only been used when they're needed they don't go down if you are in a non-contaminated area.

I found a spot like in 2033 with the shadow of people who died there and I looked at what seemed to be a guy being hung from the neck and I just peered my head in just a little bit and saw what would be perfect in a paranormal activity movie. shadows of people covered the room I mean the entire room was perfectly lit with my flashlight and i could see a small child like shadow thing right in front of me. I was like "Fuck it! I'm not going in there!"

One additional benefit most people have no clue about is that the flame of the lighter points towards the same direction as the compass marker.
Basically it negates the need of you having to pull out the whole notebook in a situation of danger. :)

To be fair, I think we're lucky we got anything from 4A Studios considering the conditions they developed the game in. They had to bring in construction generators just so they'd have power to get the game out when it was released.
One of the developers was evicted from his house by a bunch of guys with assault rifles. It's a rough place.
Also, you can kill those 'spider' type enemies without shooting them at all, as long as you keep the light on them.

2033 had pretty poor gunplay, but i actually kind of enjoyed it. The shittiness of the weapons made the combat feel really desperate and improvised.

One of my finest memories of 2033 was when I heard my revolver go click while fighting off howlers on the surface, and then having to fight them tooth and nail with my trench knife.

I prefer this linearity over cheap wannabe open worlds, its like Half-Life 2. Linear, but exploration, maybe Last Light could have a little more as you said, but its fine imo.

The scripted events doesnt bother me a bit, playing this game, and playing 2033, you will be very happy that you're stuck with a companion.. the library section in 2033, that was some intense shit! The story is very good, the voice acting is pretty shabby at times, but didnt really bother me much.. Wait for the redux edition and buy it, it's an amazing game!

Glukhovsky co-wrote Last Light but LL is not an adaptation of a book (where as Metro 2033 was) and infact LL inspired Metro 2035.

    • @lexort4204
      @lexort4204 5 років тому

Actually Last Light isn't based on a book as 2034 didn't lend itself to the video game format so the Author of the books wrote LL.

The English voice acting is not that great?
I thought the English voice acting was very solid and didn't take away from the experience, characters like Pavel I thought where voiced extremely well. Sure there were some characters not done as well (for example: Anna and some of the children characters), but once again it in no way took away from the experience.

By the way, Metro: Last Light did a hidden morality system, that way the ending more so reflects your actual choices [these being the scripted big decisions] and game play decisions (IE: Kill all the enemies, avoid them, knock them out vs actually killing them). Depending on how you play and the type of choices you make you might either get the standard ending or the alternate ending [both amazing]. This adds back to their immersion factors as it doesn't do the pick the color morality systems.

    How to enable "Ranger Mode"
    1: Dark Room, headphones.

You can save that girl at the end if you act fast enough...this acts as an example of how this game's morality works. No one blames you for not having done so or anything, it just tests you as a human in little ways. Would let a woman get violated or help her out? Nothing huge that changes the outcome of the whole Metro or such.

I don't know if this has been pointed out before, but just a heads up; in the latest patch they introduced a line in the user.cfg file "r_base_fov X" which you can use to change the default FOV. X being a number of corse. A slider woulda been nice, but personally I'll take what I can get.

I like the linearity of metro, not only does it reflect the linear nature of the tunnels but the thing that puts me off most RPG's like fallout was the open world and that you had to actually find the quest and I almost never bothered finding the quests because I never had an incentive to do so.

I say put developers into that tough position. It might cull the herd a bit and get rid of developers who aren't in the business to make good games for the sake of making good games. I grew up coding in the 90's, when the great epic companies like ID Software and Apogee were the big games in town. Back when people got into making games because they gave a damn about what people thought, and to push the limits of what gaming could be. Not to create day-1 on-disc locked content that we need to pay extra for, not to charge $60 for a disc that costs less than 20 cents to manufacture. I could understand $60 back in the SNES cartridge days because cartridge hardware wasn't cheap, but not today... even with all the assets that have to be created. As an indie dev, I think that the current scene in big-company gaming is a travesty.

    • @MaryMaryMarcy
      @MaryMaryMarcy 10 років тому

It is true that a disk may be cheap to manufacture, but it's not the disk price, it's the price of the experience, and the work people put into it, most games though start off as 120$ but if you wait 6 or so months, their price will come down to 60 or 30 dollars anyway.

16:25 the first game had even more stuff like that. For example one of the shotguns had to be reloaded by repeatedly pressing the reload button and with the double-barreled shotgun you had to fire from each barrel with a different mouse button. Stuff like that was a bit inconvenient but it added a lot to the atmosphere - you felt like your weapons were built from spare parts in the metro. Sadly Last Light doesn't have these things.

Dear Total Biscuit, do you at least double check your videos before posting them? You've been ranting about burning too many filters since you had your mask on -- ALL THE TIME the timer was stuck at 5:00 minutes, meaning the filters were NOT being used at all...
    For others:
If the watch is counting time in seconds, then you are burning filters and you are in a toxic air area. If it doesn't, you can take your mask off.

There actually is a moral system in Last Light, if you use the kill instead of knock out and don't give any bullets to the beggers in Venice you will get the bad ending. But if you use knock out and give bullets to the beggers in Venice you get the good ending. There are extreme differences in the good and bad endings so it really does matter.

There is a gap between a cylinder and a barrel. Bullet is forced through it and seals the chamber as it happens, but once it moves fully inside the barrel the gases in the chamber have an escape route and on a powerful gun will cut your finger off. Mythbusters tried it.
You shoot carbine revolvers by holding both hands together. Looks a bit weird, but works quite well.

There is a morality system, when your screen flashes white and you hear a distinctive sound, you gained points or something, you also need to be non lethal, then you ha a CHANCE to get the secret ending. Like in the hidden rooms or if you chose to save a certain character in the story.

I absolutely LOVE the Metro game series and the books aswell. I agree that the limitations can be annoying but I dont really mind. What I would like to see as a 3rd part to the series is a kind of open world survival game maybe similar to what dayz is like. Open world, hardcore survival style, i Think that this world really would draw alot of players to it, its just so immersive and great.

Also, the time you have when wearing the gas mask (using up filters) doesn't occur until you're in an area that requires the air to be filtrated such as on the outside. It is still not a good thing to walk around in the mask when it isn't needed though since the glass might break completely and you'll have to try and find a new one.

The fact this is completely in-studio made as opposed to borrowed from another engine is nothing short of incredible considering what they're doing with it.

*Eh, I guess you can register this as a spoiler, so yeah. Don't say I didn't warn you.*
One of my favorite qualities was the point given at 29:36 where you don't actually know if there is a morality system, until later in the game, in which you start to act as what you would normally do (well, you know, your standard thought process, not actually experience), and you would just remark on what you would 'become'.

i think SSAA is super sample anti-aliasing.
Basically 2x SSAA means you're rendering at 3840x2160 and downsampling to 1080p

lights out, 42" screen, gaming magic !!! kinda depressing, but awesome !!!!! linear? so frickin' what !!!!! Biscuit forgot to mention the AI of enemies, if you blow your cover, & the baddies know you're around, they don't instantly 'know' where you are,(unless someone saw you), they'll move around, carefully looking for you. It's FPS/stealth PERFECTION !!!!

needs so much more mission freedom like the ranger mission, even more, tending towards the apocalyptic freeroam games of fallout, in which you do "quests" (getting stuff for people), leading people through tunnels, allying with factions etc... damn must be EPIC

That 'battle rifle' you found in the bit with the 'ghosts' looked like a heavily converted version of the old wartime Mosin-Nagant 7.62 (see Enemy At The Gates) with some kind of side-loading bullet-chute fitted, the bolt slide altered and most of the wooden furniture taken off. Nice bit of accuracy there in terms of what would be available in the setting to these people, but for game purposes it's probably not that useful given the short ranges involved so you'd probably be right to leave it.

gas mask filters aren't used up when you are in areas with clean air, also health regenerates but stays low for about 30 seconds after taking damage

I'm speaking of the graphics settings, of course. The other options are the same AFAICT.
Perhaps they were aiming for a more console-like experience for Steam OS users.
I agree with most that was said in the video, except the complaints that there's lack of exploration. It's not really something that I felt was missing. The sequence is linear, yes, but there are several ways to approach an area, while not becoming a backtracking fest.
There's an appropriate amount of user freedom for a game with a set story progression and pacing.
One complaint I have is on the save system. I wish the user had more control over it, at least giving the option to go back a few save points for when the game inadvertently locks you out of a zone, and saving just before such occasions.
I hate it when there's a gun customization spot where I'll customize the weapons in an inadequate manner for the following section and then be unable to redo it.
A rotating-slot auto save system should be standard in games like this. Single-slot auto saving should be a thing of the past already.

Actually he's right. The tip of the lighter's flame points towards your immediate objective, while the full compass points towards the mission goal in your objectives list. If you get kinda lost, the compass can help you find your way. If you get extremely lost, the lighter will at least get you moving to the right door.
