Not so much Permadeath as in lost forever if they die, units that die out will come back after you reach the end of the rotation as the entire game is class based. So if Bear runs out of LP (Heavy Infantry), you just need to burn through the other 7 variants of the Heavy Infantry to get that specific unit back, you are not locked out of a class if they Run out of LP, you just cannot use that specific version of the unit until you go through the other 7 in the class. The only real difference between the units and their variants are their stats and Glimmer Types and the latter is more meta. You do not lose any of the equipment a unit has if they run out of LP as it is sent back to your inventory.
Respecting the original content. That is how a remake is done.

there is no permadeath. when a character dies because 0 LP, you can pick the same character class (with other names) with the same skills again.
