I had high hopes for Will Pucovski as a potential replacement for Warner in the future, especially after witnessing his performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2021. Unfortunately, injuries took him out of the team, and now he seems to be struggling with poor form in the domestic circuit.
He's had 10 concussions mate. In an era where everybody wears helmets. Sure, he's talented, but if he hasn't worked out a way to not get hit in the head yet, I'm not sure if he's ever going to. I actually think helmets have made batsmen worse at dealing with a short ball.
@@nickwells1588 I think calling him a sook is a bit harsh. You have no control over your basic physical make up, and if you just happen to be one of that small group that is extra susceptible to concussion, there's not much you can do about it. Just because you have a tough head, doesn't mean everybody else does.
@@Hick25 Mate, he gets concussed from being hit in the head by a soccer ball or a volleyball. And your figures are rubbish. He's been concussed 5 times from being hit in the helmet while batting, the figures are online, you can check for yourself. He's a talent, but he's not physically up to it at the top level. Do you think any fast bowler in the world is going to hold back if you put him in the Test team? It's sad, but it's a recipe for disaster. Some people have weak hammies, poor old Will has a weak head.
The other thing to note is that Khawaja is also in the twilight of his career. Bancroft could learn from Khawaja before he retires and then takeover the steady/occupy the crease role. This could allow more time to find an aggressive replacement for Warner without disrupting the balance of the team.
Issue is who will compliment the other. Going on Hayden and Langer was they were hard to bowl to due to totally different styles. Langer short and strong square of the wicket with Hayden tall and strong down the ground. The length for an opener to change and the line are different enough to annoy an opening bowler. Same applies for a left/right combo. Warner and Khawaja will leave both positions open long long after the other. I feel there 'could' be a 'deep end throwing' of some players against lesser sides, trial them out. Stating Head to take Warner's position is really replacing a like for like player. Maybe see what complimenting openers that can build a foundation. Trying to put the thought of partnerships are important not individual performances.
Good analysis, although you've been harsh on Renshaw. Of his two "miserable" stints in the team, one was after being flown into the post-sandpaper scene, and the other was batting in the middle order when he's an opener. Any assessment should also consider fielding ability, since Warner going takes out a slip. I'm coming around to Head being the answer, but opening in the subcontinent and limited overs means nothing for tests if you don't have a watertight technique (e.g. Finch). 2 years ago you would have said absolutely not, but he's getting better, and does bat at 3 for SA. Whatever they do, I just wish they would do it last year.
Interested to know why you would shift Travis Head from no5 where he has the opportunity to play his natural game against the older ball and a tiring attack against the second new ball, to moving him to the opening position where his lack of technique is unsuited and can be exposed on possibly a fresh pitch and always against a fresh attack?
Warner is the first Australian cricketer in 132 years to be selected for the national team in any format without experience in first class cricket. Maybe his replacement is relatively unknown?.....Maybe the selectors should go someone young and exciting like Jake Fraser-Beserk-McGurk!
The step up from Sheffield shield to test cricket is huge..Bancroft has quietly gone about his business and has done well,a risk perhaps recalling him, same with Renshaw. Head/Kuwaja opening pair makes sense,no disrespect to Pakistan but this is the perfect opportunity to try out some different options,I'd even drop Warner down the order to see what happens
Surprised Mitch Marsh wasn't considered. Head is excelling at his role at the moment. Although I do understand red ball cricket is very different from white ball but with things like bazball coming up I don't see it a bad option to fight fire with fire at the start.
Agreed, keep head at 5, let green continue to learn and develop and open with an experienced head. I would prefer bancroft. Long term Bryce Street and Henry Hunt could fill the void if they improve.
Bazball is only good against truly awful opponents. Against WTC reigning champions, the English still only managed a drawn series when they had the best of conditions in just about every Test. The reckless carefree attitude towards batting will get shown up when they go to India and it'll get shown up again when they come to Australia with no Broad, no Anderson, no Archer and probably no Wood. Without a world class bowling attack to carry their reckless batting through inevitable failure, the Bazball experiment will be a complete bust.
My actual opinion is to bring in Bancroft, but I reality I'm just against the idea of Head moving up the order. And I think the selectors do want to push for Green and Marsh in the same team which wouldn't be feasible. Also, good to see opening contenders succeeding in the PMXI match.

The suggestion of Mitch marsh to open by people is laughable he averages 26 batting at 6 he has no chance at opening
Just following on your comments about Marcus……. The main reason he has had to be the “MrFixit” at the start of an innings is due to warners failures. Warner is passed it and the selectors should be selecting a new opener to allow them to settle before Usman retires
Personally I like the idea of Smith opening the Batting. Lets you move Green into his best spot at 4, but I then think keeping Marsh doesn’t make sense and you should bring in a younger batter/All rounder like Aaron Hardie, Whiteman or Oliver Davies. Or if you really wanted Renshaw or Bancroft for that year or two experience before Khwaja goes.
I don't think you should put the team's best all-rounder as a Test opener. The reason is simply that if the other side has just hit 500 runs in a heatwave the allrounder will have bowled a lot of fruitless overs and will need some mental and physical recovery time before padding up. "Tests" are well named as they are so testing.
One of the biggest things that we, and Aus Cricket, are forgetting is that Khawaja is near the end of his career as well. We are in the position of having 2 brand new openers within the next year or so. We need 2 new players, and someone stable to begin initially for Warners position. And then someone for Khwajas. Within a very shoet timeframe next.
Warner is irreplaceable imo. Such a unique player I remember when he played his first test after starting as a 20/20 player. He will be missed dearly. Head is the best replacement for now I think. He's in good form and is capable of opening while playing with a similar aggression to Warner.
@@danielkelly4487 plenty of people would have said the same about Warner when he was selected. He is second to only Hayden in terms of aus openers. Head is still young he is capable of replacing Warner long term

Personally i would go with moving marnus labuschagne to opener and having glenn maxwell at first drop as he has been batting amazing especially through the world cup so having his power and wisdom of the game would be great.
Bit harsh that pucovski didn't even get a mention in the video. Also for the same reasons as T.Head to open, marsh can do that too. And also doesn't mess around with marn, smith, head and 3,4,5
Steve Smith will be the new opener, he's sick of waiting around all day and wants to chase some records. Good on him as long as he doesn't break down in the heat of adversity like he did during p80 gate
A couple of things to note here. Firstly David Warner is much much better for us in the second innings. Secondly, I think Khawaja only has another year or two in him as well at best, and it wouldn't surprise me if he retired at the end of the Pakistan series (being born in Pakistan). I personally think he will go through to the next home Ashes series, then call time on his career. The last piece of information here is that we need to worry about our slips cordon, as Warner is integral in that part of the ground, and I do not want to move Steve Smith from second slip where he is almost as good as the GOAT Mark Waugh. So in light of these 2 pieces of information I think we should pick form. Bancroft is in form and if we don't pick him based on his form, then he will never be picked again. I don't like the optics of picking another person involved in Sandpaper Gate to replace Warner, but it's a good option. He can be aggressive, and has much better technique. He is not a great fieldsman, but I think Marnus can probably shift to first slip next to Steve. He is also going to be ready to take over when Usman retires, and be the older head at the top of the order. The only other viable option is Matt Renshaw, who fixes our problem in the slip cordon by being amazing in that position (in my opinion much better than Warner ever has been, who really should be patrolling the covers where his speed and throwing are much more useful). Renshaw impressed me when he was first in the team, he didn't chase the swinging ball. He played and missed a lot, but occupying the crease as an opener is vital to protecting the mid and lower order from the shiny ball thats doing something. His slower run rate is of concern, but he does a decent job in the Big Bash, and as long as he learns how to rotate the strike (something Usman is great at) then that releases the pressure he was under in his first stint, where he just couldn't get off strike. I hate that Warner has decided to lock himself into the side by announcing how he wants to retire. He should have been dropped by now, and probably would have been if any candidate had been scoring enough runs. He has been a shadow of his former self for the last 3-4 years, and hasn't deserved to be in the side.
I would not be surprised if Marcus Harris does get picked against the West Indies. Perfect chance to get out amongst a yuppie team and get some confidence
Bancrofts' time has passed. Very good test batsman and fielder. He deserved consideration given his very poor treatment by CA, but both he and Harris's time has past.
i fully agree that head should open and have both marsh and head in the team. it provides a strong attacking batting lineup and with marsh and green in the side it gives the option of 2 spinners if needed. however i think cameron green should bat 5 because if he is going to be the next great player he needs to bat 5 for the majority of his career, i think trialing him there at home against a lackluster windies team could give him some confidence and experience which he desperately needs.
After the World Cup, I hope this series will bring some life in Cricket specially for me. T20 cricket is so boring, who cares India won 4-1 against Australia and now today starting the T20 with SA.
Surely it’s a better balance to move Marnus to open and then promote Green to 3. This enables Marnus to excel as well as giving Green the added backing. As well as this is fits in Head, Green and Marsh all in the team
HENRY HUNT Is the front runner amongst the newbies for sure and other are Bancroft, Harris and Renshaw. Most similar to Warner is definitely Caleb Jewell. May be Marnus to bat as an opener and Smudge to bat at 3 with 4 left open for may be someone like Aaron Hardie/Green. I believe Hardie is better than Green but Green has been overhyped by everyone and hence it is Green Green everywhere. I was very critical about Phillipe's keeping but he has improved vastly and hence can be drafted as a batter first and if Carey doesn't get runs, drop him and get an all rounder at 7 with Head and Marsh batting at 4/5 with Phillipe at 6.
Can't wait for him to retire I'll start watching cricket again, I still can't believe the cheating so embarrassing to be an Australian and watching him wearing our coat of arms.
I mean it's got to be Bancroft anyone else would be criminal really. I do think they should just swap Labushagne with Smith, Smith was always better at 3. Green should be considered a possible replacement for Smith or Starc rather than a traditional all rounder at 6.
I think Travis Head is worth a shot opening. He's similar to Warner in his aggression and would supplement Kawhaja's plodding style just as Warner does. There are probably more options to replace a no 5 than an opening batsman from the SS ranks.
no mention about Will pucovski?? he performed pretty well in BGT 2021 sydney test, but since then he is not even in 15 member squad. where has he been?
Hes been concussed several times. And he has also been on the verge of never playing cricket again if he keeps getting concussed. Hes finally back playing shield cricket though.
To put into context. Hes had 11 concussions in his career. That puts alot of strain on the brain. Some people get bad enough concussions they end up having permanent mental health damage for life. So it is a serious problem he has to overcome.
Warner has really dragged out his test career. I wish the selectors had the courage to drop him because he has been useless for years; only getting big scores in matches where we were easily winning, regardless. Truly a selfish player who will have a "legacy" as a cheater
His legacy will be that of a cheater? Interesting perspective. For me, his 40+ international hundreds, World Cups and and his much welcomed aggressive style will clearly overshadow anything else.
when I first saw harris play suring the 2021 ashes, I got really angry at australia for choosing him, as he was getting less than 20 each innings. (with an exception of 74 in the ashes) vut now I feal really vad for him, as he gets so much hate he doesn't deserve so I'm hoping he gets chosen so he can prove himself again
Khawaja will not be far behind Warner in leaving the team soon. So will Steve Smith. So our top order will need some new blood. Harris is not up to test standard and neither Bancroft nor Renshaw have set the world alight in their previous stints in the team. However i'm not sure there are any better options out there at the moment. Labuschagne and Head are perfectly suited to their current positions. Green will be like Shane Watson if he is put in to open, always suspect in defence. So there could be a few lean years ahead, particularly with Starc and Lyon near the end of their careers too.
Forget Bancroft and Renshaw … they didn’t work out. Try Harris because of his style and greater potential, or somebody unknown who could shine … like Shane Warne did for example.
11 concussions in total. Plus mental health issues (maybe related). He took an indefinite pause from cricket last year, and had had 5 shield games this season. He says he is not yet ready to consider test cricket.
Love the video but spell checking the graphics would make things look more professional 😊 One other thing isn't Green more of a gully specialist? Still he's a fantastic all rounder.
I'd lean towards Labuschagne as the opener. Smith prefers the No.3 position (I think?!) and Green would be ideal at No.4. I wouldn't be unhappy with Head opening, but he seems like the form player in the top six, so leave him at No.5. Of the others, Bancroft is the only bat with runs, Renshaw needs to score runs and Harris has had his chances. Pucovski would be ideal, but he won't be available for a couple of years, if at all.
I think it has to be Bancroft. If the selectors want the Shield to have any legitimacy, then you have to pick the best bat on form and that is Bancroft. Khawaja is also old and only getting older so we're gonna need another option soon and I think that could be Whiteman. Let's be honest, these two series against Pakistan and the Windies aren't gonna tell us much anyway because Pakistan have always struggled in Australia and the Windies, with the greatest possible respect, shouldn't be playing Test cricket at all anymore. I also think you're being way too kind to Warner. He's a clubhouse cancer who's only made runs against the absolute worst Test teams in the last few years. The selectors were gearing up to drop him at the end of last summer, then his manager got on radio to say some spicy stuff about CA management of Sandpapergate and essentially blackmailed them into keeping him around. If the team wasn't doing so well, I think the tide would have turned against him long ago. Also, I think criticism of Bailey is valid in that multiple times, he's not had the guts to drop players when they weren't performing. We just sat through Finch's torturous last season where he couldn't make a run to save himself, and now he's doing it again with Warner.
@@cicjose6016 Oh please explain how this is the case? The only player I can think of that has played for Australia in any form, that hasn’t come through Shield cricket is Tim David.

I've been saying for the last two years head would be the most logical option. He opened in the ODI world cup and smashed it. He has also had successful stints in test cricket opening iirc. Right now hes probably our best player and he mirrors David Warners style of play when he was younger.
It is very, very different opening in limited overs with the powerplay and the white ball, compared with the red ball on a cloudy day with four slips and a gully. I reckon Marnus is a natural opener - indeed with Warner's troubles he regularly is coming in the first few overs anyway.
If Head opened in test cricket, he would barely surpass the double figure mark. I think it's absolutely ludicrous to put so much faith into someone who is a slogger. He is a natural number 5 batsmen; don't move him up. Choose a specialist instead

You are filling the #5 and #6 position of the test team with players who are not good enough batters to justify that position on their own and are not good enough bowlers to play as bowlers on their own. All that does is weaken a team. It's ok in white ball cricket somewhat but in test cricket specialist positions require specialist players. Filling a side with OK all rounders with some potential doesn't solve the issue. If you have played any level of cricket you know this doesn't work. It's a rookie mistake.

Why did you stop making videos ? They are awesome
Maxwell lol
After the World Cup, I hope this series will bring some life in Cricket specially for me.
T20 cricket is so boring, who cares India won 4-1 against Australia and now today starting the T20 with SA.
Just my opinion but I believe some Cricket bats become despondent about not getting picked it brings them down and they lose form
Surely it’s a better balance to move Marnus to open and then promote Green to 3. This enables Marnus to excel as well as giving Green the added backing. As well as this is fits in Head, Green and Marsh all in the team
Cameron Bancroft
Someone with integrity and respect for the game would be a good start.😂Marnus and Head seems the most likely opening pair.
Bancroft & Renshaw don't impress me, I wouldn't mind seeing Harris again, I thought he looked good at Test cricket despite some weaknesses.
I mean it's got to be Bancroft anyone else would be criminal really. I do think they should just swap Labushagne with Smith, Smith was always better at 3. Green should be considered a possible replacement for Smith or Starc rather than a traditional all rounder at 6.
the one who will now replace warner is smith, wasn't even mentioned
@crazyh what i wanted to say was no one would have thought this would happen in their wildest dreams
I think Travis Head is worth a shot opening. He's similar to Warner in his aggression and would supplement Kawhaja's plodding style just as Warner does. There are probably more options to replace a no 5 than an opening batsman from the SS ranks.
What about Cameron Green?
He has nice techniques. 👍
What about Will Pucovski and Marty Wade
First time I’ve ever heard anyone say something positive about Joe burns
no mention about Will pucovski??
he performed pretty well in BGT 2021 sydney test, but since then he is not even in 15 member squad. where has he been?
Hes been concussed several times. And he has also been on the verge of never playing cricket again if he keeps getting concussed. Hes finally back playing shield cricket though.
To put into context. Hes had 11 concussions in his career. That puts alot of strain on the brain. Some people get bad enough concussions they end up having permanent mental health damage for life. So it is a serious problem he has to overcome.
@@chook2870 🙄😕
Cam Green higher then M Marsh in batting order
Jake Fraser-McGurk??
Warner has really dragged out his test career. I wish the selectors had the courage to drop him because he has been useless for years; only getting big scores in matches where we were easily winning, regardless. Truly a selfish player who will have a "legacy" as a cheater
His legacy will be that of a cheater? Interesting perspective. For me, his 40+ international hundreds, World Cups and and his much welcomed aggressive style will clearly overshadow anything else.
@@longjohn5322 I should've said his legacy as both an egotistical prick and a cheater shall remain intact lol.
@@user-yi5mt2df5q You’re obviously too fragile to have a balanced view of the bloke!
sounds like england fans to me
I think Whiteman deserves a chance
Yes! Head opening with Khawaja:
Khawaja
Head (vc)
Marnus
Smith
Marsh
Green
Carey (wk)
Cummins (c)
Starc
Hazlewood
Lyon
That is a strong looking team.
when I first saw harris play suring the 2021 ashes, I got really angry at australia for choosing him, as he was getting less than 20 each innings.
As long as it's not Bancheat or Trash Harris I will be happy.
Great Travis Head it is 🙂
Play Mitch Marsh as opener and Cam Green at 6
We need Maxwell
Just glad we will never have to see him scissor fist pump jump in the air when he makes runs against Bangladesh. Bye David.
Can we get Mathew wade in with usman the smith followed by green then head then marsh
Matt renshaw , Marcus Harris are perfect replacement warner and khwaja
Why not pucovoski?
Marnus opens smith 3 and green 4
Pucoski was good. He had given a scare to team India in 3rd Test. But, I think Head would become deadly opener in the test format too 🙂
In subcontinent, i don't want him opening in England, sa in tests.
Its not hard to replace a guy thats average low to mid 20's for 3 years.
Both those cheaters should still be ashamed of themselves and should be still crying about it
Funny watching this knowing what actually happened
I think any half decent carpenter or joiner should fit the bill....
Good video, you sound like you've got something dying in your throat halfway through every sentence though.
Forget Bancroft and Renshaw … they didn’t work out. Try Harris because of his style and greater potential, or somebody unknown who could shine … like Shane Warne did for example.
were the hell is will pucovski
I agreed with you until you said Travis head should open it wouldn’t work
Great video ❤
Head moves to opener and we play cam green and mitch marsh
Haha was only at the start of the video. This has to be the option right?
Where is Will Pucovski? I would give him another go. He got a solid 50 on debut, no mean feat
Hes just come back playing shield cricket. Shouldnt be rushed.
What about Pucovski? Not even a mention?
11 concussions.
@@canwelook wait what? In the domestic season?
11 concussions in total. Plus mental health issues (maybe related). He took an indefinite pause from cricket last year, and had had 5 shield games this season. He says he is not yet ready to consider test cricket.
Marsh could move to the top as well
Great Video
I reckon 1 marnus 2 usman 3 marsh 4 smith 5 head 6 green 7 Carey 8 Cummins 9. Starc 10 Lyon 11 hazelwood
Test is one thing
It's going to be even harder replacing warner in white ball cricket
The replacement is already a star =:Travis Head.... so piss off warner !!
Head and marsh?
Marsh is right there
@@rat2782 short term option no? Even then he's not Warner. Dude won pots in the wc win in t20
Love the video but spell checking the graphics would make things look more professional 😊
One other thing isn't Green more of a gully specialist?
We just sat through Finch's torturous last season where he couldn't make a run to save himself, and now he's doing it again with Warner.
the Sheffield Shield has been irrelevant for nearly 20 years
@@cicjose6016 Oh please explain how this is the case? The only player I can think of that has played for Australia in any form, that hasn’t come through Shield cricket is Tim David.
@@longjohn5322 marnus was averaging 25 in shield before he got he’s chance . Warner himself didn’t come through shield I wouldn’t say it’s irrelevant but it’s not the be all either
@@danielkelly4487 Warner didn’t make the Test side or squad until he made runs in Shield cricket. Yes, he played white ball cricket beforehand, we all know that. The mere suggestion that Shield cricket is in any way irrelevant is just nonsense. Nobody has played Test cricket for Australia that hasn’t shown something in the Shield to get the attention of selectors.
@@longjohn5322 Warner played 2 shield matches I believe and marnus averaging 25 isn’t showing something. Like I said it’s not irrelevant but it is getting less and less important then it was
I've been saying for the last two years head would be the most logical option.
@@user-yi5mt2df5q a number 5 batsman that has proven to be a core part of the team, values his wicket and has performed at the highest level for all of his career. he has proven he can bat and bring us out of tough situations. He even did it in the world cup final! He can bat at a very high tempo without throwing his wicket away and he can also settle down and save us from bad situations just like Warner which is why he should the test opener.
@@angusbuckland500 White ball is a very different ball park. I do agree that Head is a good player, but it's like trying to open with Gilchrist in test cricket. He is so good at being that number 5 batter who stays with the tail. I don't want to take him away from that position, because who will replace him as that number 5 slogger and match winner?
@@user-yi5mt2df5q I agree, He may open for us later in his career if we still haven't been able to find a suitable test opener, for now I think Bancroft or Renshaw will be selected.
Still mad they beat south africa in the icc
Sonny is still no 1 apparently
Babyyyyyyhands
Get rid of Warner and bring in Bancroft! Now!
You have midget hands 🙌🏻
Replace Khawaja as well. His strike rate is awful, even for test cricket. As painful to watch as Pujara.
Atleast drop him to 3rd and move labusghne up.
Youre rough on Renshaw imo
I have a ryobi one+ orbital sander I could highly recommend if you're looking for a replacement
I think bancroft
Love the videos and analysis man but you really gotta work on that vocal fry! I'm sure you don't actually talk like that normally, and it makes it hard to listen to. If you do talk like that then I stand corrected lol
