Take a bigger picture. The Aussies were nailed to a tree for cheating in a previous series (remember the sandpaper gate). After then, their reputation for upholding the laws and spirit of the game had been flushed down their own toilet. Watching them do this was just a rekindling of the pent up angst toward a team that it seemed would stop at nothing to win. Yes, Bairstow was "out" by the letter of the law and yes he would have claimed that wicket himself but, in light of previous incidents, the English crowds were just thinking "these cheating fucking Aussies are at it again". They were right to think that given the weight of evidence but the Aussies were right to claim Bairstow's wicket. One is a redeemable offence, Bairstow can learn the law and not get caught out again. Importantly he wasn't cheating. Nothing to gain. The other, however, is unredeemable. Cheating is cheating.

While Bairstow's dismissal was fair, I think the game should evolve. Give the umps a sign for end of a ball and end of an over. It is this assumption of understanding by default that the ball is dead, that causes issues.

I mostly agree with your thoughts. I however don't agree that acting within the laws of the game should make you immune to criticism. That underarm ball in 1981 was within the laws at the time but it was an absolute disgrace. Something I'm deeply ashamed of as an Aussie cricket fan despite it happening before I was born.

This Part 1 sounds like a cry-baby justifying why they ended up tempering the ball! I think This is a total waste, every player, every team, every cricket management comes under enormous pressure at various situations... so what they should all go temper the ball.
