Visiting my grandparents in rural Virginia in the 50s, I realized their drinking water came off the ROOF OF THE HOUSE. Rain water was funneled into a water tank which was hand pumped into the kitchen. Drinking, bathing, canning, cooking, etc with water mixed with leaves, roadkill, bird crap, etc, caused my relatives to end up in leg braces, wheelchairs, even an iron lung. My mother wouldn’t let me drink, eat, etc, at their house even though her and her 11 siblings grew up on that water. In 1958 I received the “experimental “ polio vaccine but to this day, 70years later, I’ve NEVER drank water, even”town” water. Btw, my grandparents, and their kids, that escaped polio, all lived into their 80s. Half dozen polio victims did not. Even at age 5, watching all those crows crapping on the roof, even I knew not to drink that water 😂
