SILICONE OR DIELECTRIC GREASE? When Snorkeling!

- This is my personal opinion on whether to use dielectric grease or silicone when snorkeling or sealing an air box.
I use dielectric grease on the air box lid, and silicone on all the boots. I have also deleted the secondary air chamber on this Honda.
My Honda
-Foreman Rubicon 500
-31" Outlaws
-14" ITP Hurricanes
-Highlifter 2" signature series lift
-Highlifter Snorkel kit
-Tinted lights
Now I understand why you would use the dielectric grease, everyone had always told me silicone, but I hated to have to pull the lid off with it on.
Anthony Norris it’s the way to go man!
Everybody keep saying silicone but that is actually different from gasket maker if you use gasket maker and take out the lid gasket and put gasket maker in there let it cure for 3 days and put the gasket back in and reseal your lid never have to do it again
Myself personally I'm a one-time Fix-It man do it once right and never do it again
I wish I could have everybody just send me there are box lids and I do it for them
I've done this application to every single one of my friends four-wheelers and they have no air box lid issues like Factory when you open and close it when done properly never sticks
I’ve felt this way for a long time but after trial and error I’m telling you 100% after about two hours that dielectric grease gets hot since it’s near the motor and with the pressure of the intake sucking air that dielectric grease melts/gets sucked down in the air box from the seal and it leaks. I hate to do it but the way to actually seal the lid is gasket maker.
I never thought about that. We always rode more in deeper water than anything, so everything always stayed pretty cool. I could see where it would cause issues if you trail rode a lot, and the engine is getting pretty hot. Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it!
In that area if I want going to get a caulk gun with silicone plumbers putty would probably work.
Me and my buds just use marine grease stays a bit longer
I came here to find out what type of grease to use on my mustache to create a good seal with my mask while snorkeling... in the ocean. Now I think I'll take up some 4-wheeling.
Put a bead of silicone around the lid and let it dry. After it's dry put it back on! Creates a seal with no problem taking on and off and no mess.
finally someone with some sense
Thanks! I really appreciate it!
Awesome vid
Honestly tho most of these older airboxes get slightly deformed and the lids never seal even with dielectric grease. I've had 2 Honda's were the box sides are kind of sucked in and was a bitch to get the lid to seal had to 5 minute epoxy one and silicone the other I've used dielectric grease on a couple but it truly requires a perfect injection molded box and the older bikes 2 out of 5 were bad from the factory. My kawi bayou airbox got so brittle the tabs blew apart when I was opening it So i had to epoxy it as well. when that's the situation I remove the filter cut a 3" hole in the top of box and glue in a 3 inch PVC inspection port and threaded plug to be able to clean it ect. Then I run an inline mesh/foam style filter in my snorkel stack that I can service if needed.
Wow, that’s crazy. I’ve had this machine since it rolled off the showroom floor. It’s never leaked a bit with using dielectric grease. The box has always been in good shape.
@@ChandlerWorth I agree that the majority of these bikes had no problems. but some were just rushed out the factory that day. not saying your way isn't right, if my air box is in good as new shape I'll 100% use dielectric grease. but if my bikes a second hand bike that people have spayed ether into the airbox to start on a crappy day or used carb or parts cleaner and got it all over the box they usually deform slightly and or dry out the plastic getting brittle causing the clips to snap off the box. I've only owned 1 new bike and its my daughter's old quad treated that bike like gold eventho it was a China fortrax 250 clone "Wilderness 250" and sold it for $100 less than I bought it for 2 years later.
Nice bike
Thanks ✌️
I’ve also used Vaseline before
I never thought of using Vaseline, but I'm sure it works just as well.
We got the same name so had to subscribe good video too
How often do you put the grease on it
Any time that I separate the air box to check the filter or clean it.
Iv got a grizzly 2000 660. The air filter had a sticker foam connector and it seems insufficient for the air filter Im puttibg a KN on and it doesn’t call for anything. You just drop it in and it’s two rubbers meeting each other. No seal !? Wtf
Been doing the same with die electric grease on my air box for years. Tell my friends and they say nahh man silicone. So whatever. I’ll keep it simple
It’s way easier to deal with in my opinion
And what they put on your air filters filter oil it's supposed to be tacky that's what collects the dirt
family man it is tacky, it’s a red substance.
@@ChandlerWorth and if you ever have any questions don't hesitate to give me a shout
@@ChandlerWorth watch!!!going alligator deep!!!in Florida pond on my 500
I like to use bel-ray foam filter spray 100% waterproof but it's blue
It works amazing and when I'm riding in Dusty conditions I do it every couple days
Quick question how dose it make a water tight seal if you can remove it
The water doesn’t exert enough pressure to push the grease though. The grease is just thick, and fills the gap between the lid and air box. With it being thick, it doesn’t push though and fall into the air box, or push though and let water in. It’s the same concept of greasing ballpoints or pivot points on a vehicle
Did you put your fuses and relays in a waterproof box? I’m going to get a 2021 rubicon 520 soon and am wondering about getting those wet
I didn’t, I put dielectric grease around the box that goes over the fuses in the rear, and pulled all relays and fuses, and then putting dielectric grease under each one before putting them back in.
Myself personally I pulled each fuse individually and put Dielectric grease where they go and plug them back in never had to seal my fuse panel to this day I still don't have problems
Do u put dielectric greaser on ur starter to and spark plug?
not on the starter, but i did inside of the sparkplug boot.
I recommend every electrical connection
What are the 2 connections in front of the air box called?
The large hose in the front center is for the fuel injection. I can’t think of what the other one is, I’ll look tomorrow and let you know.
do a tutorial video
What if my atv has a very small leak of oil like overtime and mine is snorkeled is good? Could water get in?
Nathan Perkins it really depends on where it’s leaking from, but if it is a small leak I would say that you are fine running in water, because the water would have to have pressure to bypass a seal and force oil the other way.
My nephew had a small leak in his shifter seal and got water in his motor every time
Man I used PVC water proof glue/cement and flex seal
Do you remove the oem seal and then grease or put in seal then grease
Wes Silvers no leave the oem seal. The grease is like just in case the oem seal leaks.
Are you saying silicone grease hardens?
Not that it hardens, but that when it dries, it is stuck to whatever it has dried on, and it is then aggravating to get off cleanly.
@@ChandlerWorth That's interesting. 3M makes a silicone paste for use as lubricant on brake guide pins that the calipers slide along:
www.amazon.com/3M-08946-Clear-Silicone-Paste/dp/B005RNEH5O/
It looks very similar in color and consistency to silicone plumbers grease:

@@FranklinPhan I gotcha.
I have a 2013 rancher 420 im having issues with it shutting off under water now it doesnt happen in every hole but some it does and its not the air box cause when we open it its bone dry but it will still shut off under water not sure what it is any suggestions?
I would pull out all my fuses and Dielectric grease and fuses are probably Crossing and it could be stalling or could be needing Dielectric grease in the plug boot make sure all your electronics are Dielectric grease stands problems will go away
I would try what Extreme Family Man is suggesting, on a side note, I'm not sure if it carburated or fuel injected. If it is carburated, Make sure the vent lines from the carburetor are run above water, and check the check valve in the over flow line on the bottom. If it's fuel injected, let me know and I'll dig deeper.
@@ChandlerWorth my nephew had the same problem with his four-wheeler it was carbureted it was the Overflow on the carburetor when he would get deep enough it would pressurize and put water in the carburetor a screw in cab over flow line and it stoped
Extreme Family Man yessir, I had a 2014 rubicon that had the same problem, I kept a golf tee to put in it when I would ride in deep water, and pulled it out after I was out of the water. Run like a charm!
Chandler Worth fuel injected
I put silicone on mine How do I get it off
The only way to get it off now is to pry it off as easily as possible
A hundred percent silicone never dries I always use gasket maker that will actually dry and if you watch my video you can see I take my air box lid off its low issue I can take off whenever I want
The other thing is making sure you let it dry giving it three to four days to fully cure before you reinstall and I take the gasket out of the air box lid and put gasket maker in and then reinstall the gasket after it's dry
Watch properly sealing another air box lid and then you can watch us take it in deep in alligator Pond and test it have not had one problem with our air box Lids easily open easily closed always properly sealed
I have done all my friends and Family's a TV air box Lids this way and it's a permanent fix never had one glue shot as long as you let it dry
How much do u change out and re do the dielectric grease on the lid?
Curt Baker only whenever I take the lid off of the air box, which for me is after every big ride to check my filter.
Me personally it's a pain in the butt I don't do the Dielectric grease on my airbox but if it's working for you guys and you're having fun more power to you
The product I use is called[The right stuff]it works the best
It's got a fast drying time
Do I need to put dielectric grease in my little fuse box on the Forman
I recommend putting dielectric grease on any and all electrical connections on the fourwheeler. I would put it all on the prongs of the fuses and reinstall them!
@@ChandlerWorth okay thank you I just got a snorkel for my 420 and I was confused on where to put dielectric grease but now I know so thank you
@@carsoncelmer5747 anytime man! I’m glad that I could help ya out! If you need anything else, just let me know!
@@ChandlerWorth do you put it on the battery to ?
@@juanestrada8941 I didn’t, but you can, the battery connection are normally pretty good. I wouldn’t worry about it personally.
