  • 7 Ways I use an iPad Pro for School and Research
The iPad Pro is a very powerful computer that I use every day for school and research. It provides a friction-free system for all the stages of learning and research:
    Collection and Engagement
    Reflection and Study
    Practice and Production
There are many ways I use the iPad for my classes and research and in this video, I present seven of them.
    00:00 Welcome
01:12 What do we do at school?
    01:48 One - Note Taking
03:45 Two -Reading and Academic Journals
07:18 Three Annotations and PDF Mark-up
    09:37 The most powerful buttons
    12:02 Four Collect and Consolidate
13:22 Capturing whiteboards and books with Microsoft Lens
    17:09 Five writing and Creation
    18:38 Scrivener
20:36 Six Online Meetings - Teams demo
22:35 Seven Connecting to Remote Systems
Many studies have compared the benefits of a more engaged mind when drawing and/or writing by hand over typing on a keyboard. Here is a list on Google Scholar that can get you started in understanding the benefits across learner populations.

    About…me.
Hello there - I'm glad you've taken the time to look at my videos and this description box!
My name is Frank and I've been teaching post-graduate programs in technical subjects for almost 25 years. My Master's Degree is in Learning and Technology (from Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC - where they filmed the X-Men movies!).
I'm a Microsoft Certified Trainer (since 1998), a Cisco Certified Academy Instructor (since 1999), and have a lot of different technical certifications (I even had my own consultancy and was a member of the Apple Consultants Network for a few years. I like technology a lot.
I've been fascinated with learning and how to improve learning for years. Especially how to leverage technology for learning. From productivity Applications like Teams, OneNote, Excel, and the entire Microsoft Office suite to tools such as Mindmapping, Metaverse, VR, AR, and more - I like to see how we can use tools to leverage our ability to teach and learn.
Learning and Technology UA-cam is about helping students and teachers improve their learning by leveraging technology tools. Whether remote teaching, distance learning, hybrid teaching, or completely in the classroom - we can use technology to enhance our skills. This channel is dedicated to developing teaching and personal productivity when it comes to learning and technology. Thank you for watching!

I used a Gen 2 Pro for my undergraduate degree, and just purchased a Gen 4 for graduate studies. I still have my pack of fine markers. Thanks for the useful information.
I don't know what I would have done without Notepad, Kindle, and Audible. Dyslexia makes alternative thinking a must. You should have seem the look on my classmates face when I raised my iPad, snapped a shot of a research workflow, and seamlessly added it to my handwritten notes. All while recording bits of the lecture.

For slide annotation on an iPad - Teams currently doesn’t have a presenter view for iPad sharing of PowerPoints. Hopefully soon.
The cup is from a company called Uberleben - I did see it listed on Amazon as a Koska Cup - but I think the price is significantly less if you go to the Uberleben.co their website 😀 it’s my “hipster” cup for mushroom coffee - people love it!
Dremel tools are very cool! I have a slight problem with them - every time I go to the hardware store I have to get “something” for my Dremel - haha!

I am even more impressed at 21:40 how you demonstrated the best way to have video conference calls with the iPad Pro 😃😃 that is something the so called top tech reviewers don't do. I love eBools for this very reason - I find electronic note-taking and organization much easier and definitely use this method.
I can’t easily copy the entire book - because of digital rights, but it’s extremely easy for cut and paste notes and images that I can then annotate in OneNote.
I also use an App called Readwise that pulls my notes from Kindle books and allows me to review them for spaced repetition.

I had seen this in another video from a person using either notability or GoodNotes, where they would be able to open up a kindle book/ ebook in their note taking app and take sections or graphs etc. and create notes. Yes - I think I mentioned that indirectly when I spoke to Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. The same would apply to any computational requirements that are extensive.
In this case, I’m referring to research as reading peer-reviewed journals - not applied research requiring specialized software and/or equipment.

However, a few kilometres up the road, they were the powerhouses for serious research! I’m the end, a computer is a computer and it will depend in who is using it. The real question is why do I keep losing my annotations every 2 hrs even though the pdf is saved to iCloud and iPad storage, yet it continues to glitch every 2 hrs. So annoying, I reached apple and they didn’t do shit.

    • @LearningandTechnology
      @LearningandTechnology  2 роки тому +1

Are you referring to annotations you make on the PDF?
If you are syncing the PDFs to and from iCloud (or any cloud service) then ensure you have your times and sync settings configured correctly.
I’ve seen cases where the cloud copy is seen as “new” and the client copy is over-written by the “new” (unannotated) copy. You can also rename your notes copy so that you are saving a copy that has notes. This can happen if your settings on the original are “read only” - it could be that you are trying to sync a copy, the cloud doesn’t allow it to be written, and then your local copy gets “updated” with the non-noted read-only copy.
If it’s happening every 2 hours - then it is very likely a sync issue - happening every 2 hours.

So my “annotated” PDFs are all there. I’m not 100% sure this is what you are looking for and/or if you tried this. I’m not 100% sure how to recreate the challenge you are having because this is the way I’ve been doing it. However, maybe this helps? Let me know exactly what type of document you are marking up and losing (I’m just assuming PDF). Maybe this is a solution?
Add: I also sometimes do that same with OneNote - I’ll mark up a PDF and then send to OneNote in a Notebook for a specific project.
If this doesn’t make sense - I can video it as a demo.

@@LearningandTechnology yes I markup the pdf files using markup. Do I save it to books frist or? Because when it’s in icloud everything resets after 30 minutes and any work I have done during those 30 minutes disappears

@@Vieracky22 what I do is take the PDF and save it into iBooks or OneNote (depending on the project). After that, I can mark it up all I want and it stays.
I did an extra test after your comments and they are still marked up today.
I’ll try and do a quick demo video - it’s important to keep the markups!

Have you ever used large sized ereader like Boox, supernote, remarkable etc? What is your view on Eye strain while using ipad? Wouldn't a Eink display help where we can read and annotate PDFs.

I’ve used a couple eReaders - they are great, but are not as feature rich as the iPad. That can sometimes be a good thing too - so you don’t get distracted.
For eye strain, you can adjust the iPad and I haven’t had any issues personally. It is something to consider if you experience eye strain with screens in general though.

@@LearningandTechnology Thanks for the quick response :) ..... I am planning to buy one but still confused what to get ipad or ereader. Ipad is versatile while ereader has eink display but its slow. Also in my country (India) these ereader companies are not providing any warranty, so if it malfunctions then its waste.

You think it’s ok to write larger tasks (school Work) with «Word» on an iPad?
