I use both Goodnotes and Notability and have done for years. One of the biggest differences which can be a dealbreaker for some of your viewers, especially those using smaller capacity iPads is the difference in file size. Goodnotes files tend to be 10-20x larger than Notability which can result in you filling up your IPad if you make a lot of notes. Especially if you have a 32/64GB model. I believe this is because Notability has a vector description of the page whereas Goodnotes saves it as a raster image. For this reason I default to Notability even though I like a lot of the Goodnotes features as I take so many notes I can’t afford for it to hog that much storage. You can google and many have done comparisons on file size between the two.

Great genius at Apple goes hand in hand with unthinkable stupidity. First they churn out a machine(like ipad pro) that would not have a problem handling 3 OS-es with all their apps in the same time . Then they put in it so much storage as the ancient computers had circa 2000. I mean , what .......
Apart from the fact that these apps may be inefficient in their storage handling, the ipad and every computer in these days should have orders of magnitude larger storage than what we would need(because of bad apps) at the same price, because this is the natural evolution of silicon. Artificially limiting RAM and permanent storage to squeeze just a bit of a dollar more is lame. Even tablets should get out of the factory with minimum 1 tb of storage and 16 gb of RAM(and memory slots for redundancy). Desktops and laptops should have triple that as minimum.

Going paperless for work simplified so much of my life, and I wish it had been an option when I was a student. I upgraded to the iPad Air 4 last year, and I agree that you don't need the Pro if you're not a content creator. My iPad is my primary device, so I also use it for streaming shows/twitch and even gaming without any performance issues. The screen is big enough to comfortably work in split screen mode if you want to have your preferred note taking app open while you're writing, which is what I typically do with Scrivner and Goodnotes.
However, I would say that if you're not planning on primarily typing to take notes, a normal case and a separate bluetooth keyboard is a far better user experience than a case with a keyboard. It offers more flexibility and opens up additional options for a keyboard suited to your preferences and needs.

I got the iPad pro for medical school. Personally, it depends on need what you need to buy. I used the 11-inch and it was okay but then upgraded to 12.9-inch. I needed the larger screen because I did a lot of split-screen work using books and my not apps. For medical students, the Pro is probably best because we watch a lot of videos and do quite a lot of video work and also work with flashcards and VERY LARGE textbooks and the larger processing was more comfortable as was the larger screen. The Air would be easier on the budget and almost as good, but it is size restricted. The paperlike screen protector is amazing and a must. I use notability and goodnotes for notes, notability for school, and good notes for my own notes. I prefer Notability for note-taking, My organization was fairly easy because I use it like I did my binder in school. Some people prefer printed textbooks but most schools give the PDF textbook and it's easier to take them around because they are HUGE and heavy and expensive. Even the files are huge digitally so I had to have the larger 1TB where I used to use the smaller 64GB because anything smaller that 256 or 512 is too small with the large volume of notes and

Such a helpful video. I bought the 9th generation iPad Air with the first generation pencil and it’s been great for me. I am also using good notes and reading journal articles have become so much easier to organize and keep for future reference. I’m working on my Masters in History on line while working 45 hours a week as a litigation Paralegal. I also did not major in history for undergrad, I was a Sociology and Political Science major. It has been a challenge learning to study history mostly because of the enormous amount of reading required. I study every evening for 4 hours and all day on weekends. Our discussions are done via video and I also find it challenging to find materials that are only available at my university’s library ( we have a lot available on line but not everything) my school is in VA and I’m in TEXAS so I have really had to learn how to access online archives through Oxford and library of Congress. I don’t recommend doing a masters online if you can go in person. I just have too many commitments with a son in law school and a daughter in college and I’m married so moving away to school or quitting my job wasn’t an option, I’m definitely going to look into PhD programs here in Dallas where I can attend in person, and plan financially to be a full-time student but for now I’m doing the best I can and your videos have helped me tremendously!

Don't get Paper-like, just buy a matte screen protector. Same exact thing but 4 times cheaper. Also if you buy a paperlike or a matte screen protector be prepared for your apple pencil tip to completely wear out and need to be replaced aveter every month of intense use (the paper-like feeling comes from the plastic rubbing against a sandpaper-like surface, which quickly wears down the plastic). It's still definetely worth it but i would recommend to buy a generic matte screen protector and third party apple pencil tip replacements because otherwise it will cost you hundreds of dollars every singe year.

What size iPad are you using? The reason why I'm asking is your handwriting can be read on your iPad without having to zoom. Oh yes, that actually reminded me, do you zoom in on your iPad whenever you write on goodnotes app to make your notes? Other than that thank you for making this helpful video.

Do you read the notes after you write them? I thought that the thought process forced upon your brains while writing stuff down was the entire learning by heart skill achieved by writing stuff down by hand. The processes was once mentioned as: "Carving it in to your brains" - some lecturer, name remains forgotten.

Your comparison of the note-taking apps Goodnotes and Notability was clear and useful. Also useful was your approach to the different types of notes that you take. I found it difficult, however, to remain focused on your comments due to the distracting music. This was particularly noticeable in the Goodnotes vs. Notability clips. When you used a voice-over for the Notability segment, and your words were a bit easier to follow, compared to the preceding Goodnotes segment. Maybe the music volume level in this segment was lower, or perhaps you used a different microphone, mic placement or acoustic setting for the voice-over audio. My advice would be to avoid music in an instructional video of this type, or at least confine the background music to limited parts of the video that do not require the viewer's intense focus. Overall good video, but please dial down or eliminate the music.

I've been curious about note-taking techniques on a mobile device for some time. I take old-fashioned business-meeting notes (to be converted into meeting minutes) for work that I do. Doing this in a meeting setting with binder-filler paper and a mechanical pencil works for me, but I hate having to take what I've already written down in notes and then work in front of a computer later to type it out in MS Word for draft meeting minutes. I've been thinking about getting a late-model iPad (possibly an iPad Mini) and streamlining my meeting notes->minutes process. I was thinking that taking an iPad Mini with me to remote locations for on-site project meetings would be handy, as I could snap photos with the Mini while also taking notes standing up. Are Goodnotes and Notability strictly cloud-based? The reason I ask is because if I'm on-site in my rural area there may not be cellular signal readily available and I wanted to know if these apps could still take notes in isolation.

You don’t need to be connected to Wi-Fi to use Goodnotes or notability but you do in order for the files to sync between devices

    • @MrMootube1000

Someone mentioned that Goodnotes takes a lot more storage than Notability (just wanted to mention that since the base option is 64gb) so I say just keep that in mind. Other than that you can also purchase the cellular version of the iPad Mini, although it is only necessary depending on your use case and also of course cellular data is not as reliable as wifi.

HI UA-camrs, I was wondering what are the advantages of Goodnotes vs the new Apple notes? Also, mindful if Goodnotes upgrade if this could cause problems in accessing old data. I'm currently studying masters. Looking to create a lifetime library of resources including journal articles I can save as PDF's etc after I get kicked off my academic institutions resources when I graduate. Considering a whole bunch of things including Medalay but I like the interactiveness of the Ipad.

Apart from the lack of an undo function and being easy to delete whole blocks of text & not being able to save on the fly & obviously unable to utilise other document file types, apples default ‘Notes’ app is okay.

Looks good, but you never came across Liquidtext, MarginNote or Altas Ti for multiple paper management and linking of the huge amount of scientific research you have to process for your PhD? If you ever plan to do so, skip Liquidtext as it is too expensive for what it can do. I would go for MarginNote instead as long as it is not top secret (government) stuff you are working with (It is Chinese)... Atlas Ti is maybe a bit too massive and complex and the most "expensive" subscription offer. I just used it for one project, but pretty quickly dropped it as I got "lost" with all my papers....
