I like that there's a bit of dialogue Shannon can have with Junebug to say she's going to the distillery after Conway. Junebug even offers the IOU from the distillery, even though they both know it won't be enough. To me it says that they aren't going to let him just be forgotten, even though in the end he got swallowed up by the debt of his alcoholism. This song feels hopeful for the people of the town, but I feel like it's also a rememberance of why the gang started their little journey. They finished the delivery for the old man, even if he couldn't make it in the end, and they found a new beginning for themselves. See ya, Conway.
Shannon is wearing his jacket in the act too. Conway lead a tough life that didn't always work out for him because of capitalism and whatever but in the end he was the reason this entire ending scene happened. He's why all these people met and could sing this beautiful lament. Was it on purpose? no. Was Conway there? no. But in the end this happened because of this kind man had to make one last delivery.
As a Pole I'll tell you this game had it's moments, but mostly it was what the fuck is this garbage piece of writing doing in front of my eyes. It's shit, it was written by 3 students. Let's not kid each other. It has it's moments but mostly it's a giant mammoth shit.
I just saw this for the first time and I had the same reaction. I am BAWLING. I am full ugly-crying. I do NOT feel okay with this beautiful thing I have just seen
I made the mistake of sending poor old Homer off with Conway expecting him to come back later. That distillery is no place for a poor loyal old hound to spent its last days. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
You and me both. I've avoided listening to it again for so long because of that but sometimes...I want to feel what I felt again when this scene came along again.
It affected me in exactly the same way. I think the memorial struck something deep and terribly sad about innocence, loss, and death. Even re-watching it, I cannot help but weep long and hard. The whole game is incredibly cathartic.
I played the whole game twp years ago in one long sitting, alone in my house at the end of a blizzard, and I wept intensely while gripped by unfathomable and world-encompassing sorrow; not for the fictional horses or for the game's many avatars of impermanence and loss, but for the totality of our transient passage through reality. And every time I play the final song of the game, I cry again. Kentucky Route Zero is one of the most important artistic collages in the American literary canon; it is the equal of its influences and the works that it quotes (Frost, Tennessee Williams, Whitman, Faulkner, Cather, etc., etc.,) I had forgotten that I had already replied to this comment back then.
I’ve heard of a land of joy and peace and wonderful light A beautiful place of mansions fair and skies so bright Where all who believe the savior dear forever shall stay And having been saved by grace divine I’m going that way I’m going that way, I’m going that way Yes dear, the savior I adore is with me each day I’m clinging to him and never to stray Just singing praises all day long, I’m going that way The glorious news I tell and sing as onward I go For those who are still astray in sin my savior may know I want them to sing that praise above some beautiful day For glory to him who died for me, I’m going that way
I know I shall meet him at the gate when trials are past I know I shall meet him face to face in glory at last Oh I believe that when we meet 'well done' he'll say I'll trust in the soul-redeeming love, I’m going that way I’m going that way, I’m going that way Yes dear, the savior I adore is with me each day I’m clinging to him and never to stray Just singing praises all day long I’m going that way
Oddly, I like that the cat moves around even during this most heart-breaking scene. It reminds you that even though you may be going through the worst day of your life, somewhere there's still a cat just running around, chasing a lightning bug, and having the greatest time.
as the radio show interlude tells you, when the pueblo de nada (people of nothing) came to this town from central america, their first experiment was to free the horses. their last experiment drove them deep underground, and then after that huge storm the horses died because there was nobody to take care of them. the horse funeral is mourning the death of the free and creative american spirit, crushed by capitalism, as well as everyone in the game that was crushed under it--conway, lula and her friends and their dream of building the computer, the people at wepv, all the people sold into debt and turned into skeletons in the distillery. the first act of the game opens with a horse buried up to its neck in dirt, but still holding on; the last act ends with the horses buried entirely.
Zephaniah Yeo thanks for the write up. I've played each act when they were released, so it's hard to pay attention to the bigger picture. I intend to replay the whole thing in one or two sitting at some point in the future. This is a beautiful piece of media. A pack full of feels.
Antônio Cândido yessss definitely do!!! I was a little disappointed in acts 4 and 5 when they came out, having mostly forgotten what happens in the original acts, but I just got done replaying the entire game and I’m so glad I did

How do you get that line?
It’s funny how one game has taught the world more about southern and Appalachian culture than any textbook ever could.
Idk its still a bit idylic here in comparison to irl despite everything

as soon as the ghosts started appearing and the other voices came in, i just closed my eyes and started crying. this game broke me

How about spending its last days with an old man with too many debts to pay, who needs the companionship the most?
@@Autocratical Where Conway is going is no place for a dog...
@Autocratical absolutely not. The dog doesnt deserve the same fate as Conway. Thats why picking that way is a literal skull.
No other song can bring to tears like this one can, even years after I last played Act V.
You and me both. I've avoided listening to it again for so long because of that but sometimes...I want to feel what I felt again when this scene came along again.
I don't think I've ever wept this hard before, and to be honest I couldn't articulate why it got me the way it did.
It affected me in exactly the same way. I think the memorial struck something deep and terribly sad about innocence, loss, and death. Even re-watching it, I cannot help but weep long and hard. The whole game is incredibly cathartic.
It's because it's a chorus. We have it inbuilt to share emotions among a chorus. It's a good human trait.

Ditto.
It was daytime in my playthough - nice to see an alt version, and to hear the crickets.

Transcends words. Beautiful art.
I know we all cried, but did anyone else sing along when you first played the game? I feel like I know this song by heart at this point
It’s funny because I have never been much for religious hymns but the songs in this game are sooo beautiful there’s no way I can not sing.
I sang along to the chorus.
as someone from the appalachian mountains who has indeed buried horses.. this hits harder than it should.
rest in peace Lily
even though not fully understanding the entire story
this song hits me in the feels that I can't explain
Simply an incredible ambience
This shit hit like a ton of bricks. Just watching this video is killing me.
I cried at this scene, remembering burrying my cat.
I cried thinking about being with my ex at the vet seeing her cat who couldn’t move, and now thinking about burying mine in the future.
Omg ME TOOOOO. I buried mine 3 months ago. 3 days bfore halloween and he was a black cat. 😢 sorry for your loss.
made me cry
This shit just hit way too hard for some reason
so beautiful!!! almost cried!!!
Anyone else started singing along?
Thanks for uploading this, just wish you would have kept the cat still
May I recommend ua-cam.com/video/k8rcn19RF6M/v-deo.html . That video kept the cat still, which is why I chose to do something different!
Johnathan Reale ah okay, fair enough. Thanks

this absolutely destroyed me
can someone explain the ending to me?

@@sieltan5618 that was one of the best writeups of the game I've ever read, I might have to replay the whole game after this!
