Many commentators ask "who's still listening"? Well those of us who lived through those wonderful carefree years as young people, and now we're old we choose to keep reliving those years ❤😂
My dad was in the Navy with the guy who wrote this song. They were stationed in Rota, Spain together which is where I was born. The song is a true story!
Susanne Stoll that is awesome! My name is Brandy and I was a bartender when I met my husband (Active Duty Navy). This is our song!!!!! One of my faves for sure.
I currently live on SAIPAN.. it's a bigger island near ROTA. (Both are part of the CNMI... Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands ) It's possible you might have been born on Saipan instead of Spain. The spelling is close. Best regards..and you will love to visit Saipan, or part of the CNMI.
Pretty much, a lot of rap and pop is uninspired or literally just sounds in an incoherent order. Although, turn the lights back on by Billy Joel is really good and released in march
@StratmanDarrell They sure did. My brother was in several local bands. They played 50 s and 60 s music for weddings and night clubs around the area. I don't remember if they played " Brandy " or not. I went to listen to them as often as I could. Their band " Pop Rouge " was popular in our area. I met a lot of great people, fantastic musicians as well.
Definitely takes you back to a better place and time. I wish it was the 70s again. Just turned 55 recently. Oh to go back and relive those days. I luv this song
I’m a sailor in the Merchant Marine. This is my jam while at sea and before I ship out. Still waiting for my brandy but surely my life, my lover, my lady is the sea.
That's what I say .. This song contains insight. The composed was a seaman. My father was a merchant seaman. He told me his greatest other love was the sea.
My sister's name is Brandy and we used to sing it together as children. She ended up marrying a military man who gave her a locket from Spain, and we cried listening to it when he left. It's one of those songs that follow you prophetically through life, I listen to this song when I miss her. ❤
i smell bullcrap... theres no way that her names brandy and she has a locket from spain, and she married a military man. because thats what happens to the brandy in the song besides the military dude.
Sing along .... There's a port on a western bay And it serves a hundred ships a day Lonely sailors pass the time away And talk about their homes And there's a girl in this harbor town And she works layin' whiskey down They say, Brandy, fetch another round She serves them whiskey and wine The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl) "What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl) "Yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea" Brandy wears a braided chain Made of finest silver from the North of Spain A locket that bears the name Of the man that Brandy loved He came on a summer's day Bringin' gifts from far away But he made it clear he couldn't stay No harbor was his home The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl) "What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl) "But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea" Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes When he told his sailor stories She could feel the ocean fall and rise She saw its ragin' glory But he had always told the truth, Lord, he was an honest man And Brandy does her best to understand At night when the bars close down Brandy walks through a silent town And loves a man who's not around She still can hear him say She hears him say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl) "What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl) "But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea" It is, yes it is He said, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl) "What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl) "But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
Crying as I listen to this after 50 years. Schoolmates, beautiful summers, young love.....What a track! You would NOT get anything so accomplished as this in the charts today.
It's impossible to say what makes this song so great. Great tune, great instruments, vocalization. And the lyrics are so haplessly tragic despite the upbeat tune. She's got all the qualities that any guy would snatch up in an instant but she's destined to be alone because instead of guys liking her as a person they'd rather prefer the personification of the cruel, hard, lonely life of the sea. And despite all this, there is a happy sounding chorus extolling Brandy's virtues.
Garret Gray I think it's more that the sailors know that their "calling" is greater than settling down with Brandy. She is fated to live a lonely life not because these men prefer the sea, but because she is hopelessly in love with one of them and can't help it
I like to think of the sea as the same thing as traveling today. One can't settle down if they have a burning desire to travel for extended periods of time.
Indeed. Not like the modern "cheating" or "breakup" or "revenge" songs like of today. But it was about a tragic story of two people who fell in love but belonged to different worlds, as one waits and longs to see someone who may never return.
this song has been stuck in my head ever since I saw Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2. The way Kurt Russel talks about it and just how perfectly it fit in the movie. I love this song!
I was born in '85 and my mom was a hippie lady born in '54. She loved to play her favorite songs as I was growing up and this being one of them. She died 2 years ago from heart failure and diabetes but I will forever love the awesome music she raised me with 😊❤
Loved reading through the comments. So refreshing to see so many like-minded souls appreciating this timeless classic. I think it resonates differently for each of us but, most of us end up at the same place. At 59 years old now, I have, so many times, played out my own video in my mind as I listened to this entrancing song. Just as many others, I could see Brandy serving the whiskey & wine to the lonely sailors. I could picture the scene of the hardwood floors, the rustic tables, and our lovely Brandy setting down the many mugs of beer and the shots of whiskey in front of her many customers. Not only that, I could imagine all the come-ons and advances she must have endured. I could picture the beautiful chain with the locket from her lover. The chorus kicks in and, I can relate to the pain of being in love with someone who is not there. "My" Brandy is a slim brunette with a simple beauty that requires no makeup and (of course) the most beautiful eyes that leave you breathless. I can feel what she is feeling, as she walks through her silent town, her heart yearning for her love that is not around. A song that invokes so much emotion and personal connection, experienced by so many. I am right there with you - my heart going out to Brandy, my admiration for her faithfulness and, my hopes that she will have her lover with her again very soon.
This song is long, hot summers spent gazing at the mountains, jumping on the trampoline, eating Otter Pops; all while listening to the best music ever. The 60s and 70s.

In fact, I think I'll capture an mp3 of "December 1963"(oh what a night)" by the four seasons, because 1963 is my birth year
Yes, my neighbors had a tramp. Spent hours on it and got pretty good. My friend broke his arm trying to do a triple somersault but in those days it wouldn't have occurred to anyone to sue your neighbors.
I was 20 in '70, the '60's & '70's were the BEST times of my life! Well, '69-'70 was Viet Nam time, but other than that, it was my most precious memories I have. Sounds like they were for you as well😊
Fall quarter, freshman year Mercer University, 1983. I had this single on in my dorm room. Pretty unhip, technically, but everybody just kind of lingered to hear it, so I aimed my speakers out the third-story window onto the quad and started it over, at top volume. Everything stopped dead for three minutes, and a huge cheer went up from all over the campus when it ended. People stood up and clapped and shouted. It's just that kind of song. What a great memory.
Classic! Everything's in place here: an irresistible beat, a cooking horn arrangement, cooking back-up vocals, great guitar playing and sound, a compelling story in the lyric, and of course a great lead vocal. A++++.
Just listened to this song again today, and noticed the subtle horn swell that builds to a crescendo at each climactic part in the song before cutting back to build a nice dynamic flow. Absolutely masterful production, and a great song.
So Guardians 2 opens with this song and my wife and I look at one another( 70s children) and we both started to sing the song. Thank you James Gunn for that special moment.
As someone who was a Rock Jock for over 30 years at stations around the USA, Looking Glass song "Brandy" was sometimes still on the list as either the Number 1 most requested song ever or Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" even up until about 1985. To be one of the most requested songs in rock and roll history is an amazing feat. The voice, the story and the arrangement are unmatched. Its just pure joy and a slice of music heaven to listen to this song.
My senior year in high school began in the fall of 1971. We welcomed 1972 riding around singing along to Joy to World at the top of our lungs with the radio because it was the #1 hit. When I was in college I would often play Denver’s greatest hits on my stereo while I dressed in the am. It didn’t jazz me up too much since I needed to concentrate. My playlist still includes my most loved songs from high school and college. I have very few if any recent recordings.
I have loved this song since the first time I heard it 50 years ago when I was 12. I am now 62 and still love it just as much. The storytelling is vivid and evocative. Lyrically, it reminds me of many traditional Celtic folk songs that have been passed down for generations.
I’m only 19 and I really like this type of music! I listened to 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s music for much of my childhood and I’ve continued to as an adult. The music during that time period is my favorite!

I just want to point out the genius of James Gunn here. He created the tragic backstory relationship of Quill's mother with his father, around an amazing and tragic song from the 70's. Ego is the sailor and Quill's mom is Brandy! I can never listen to this song the same again without thinking about that! Nicely done!
Jose Ruiz what's interesting is Gunn picked out the song before he even written up the screen play with Ego and just revolved and added to the plot with Brandy

@John Callahan makes me shed a tear everytime I hear it. Your right, the older ya get, the more painful life becomes. All our family reunions are now funerals.
I have loved this song from when I first heard it back in high school!!! The lead singer has the best voice that fits this groove perfectly!!! Those great times back in the best decade ever to hit earth. THE 70S!!!!!
RIP my friend Brian Eastman. I can never hear this song without remembering our crazy years. Now I get teary-eyed hearing this. I'll miss the hell out of you man.
I think the 1970s launched the most beautiful songs in the USA by far. The 1920s, 1930s and 1940s also had some beautiful music, but I still think the '70's takes it. From then songs have only gotten more awesome, tremendous but they're missing this glory of simple beauty that only the 70's had. The list of examples thankfully is TOO LARGE to mention but if you do a UA-cam search on 1970s hits you'll see, it'll be OBVIOUS. I'm SO GLAD that at 58 yrs old I've had the time to listen to SO MUCH MUSIC, there's probably thousands of songs that I could name the group, song and the year that they hit just in the first 1-5 seconds of them playing, this even includes pop, country, rock & it's subgenres of hard rock, metal, alternative, disco, Christmas music, Christian music, funk, big band, swing, classical music, punk, rap, reggae, the list goes on and on to include even international. I hope that as many people as possible take advantage of today's technology to familiarize themselves with this wonderful legacy that the world has in recorded music, I think it's well over 100 years old now, hear as MUCH AS YOU CAN, enjoy it, and above all: SHARE IT, the best quality of music is when it's shared and later in life it triggers the same emotions in people that they had many, many years ago, music is such a wonderful spark that produces nostalgia in people, it makes one feel almost as if they never aged. God bless all of our musicians throughout the years, of all walks of life, of all countries.
immediately transports me to Jersey shore as a kid. , born in 63 I consider myself lucky to have grown up on 60's and it's music. My kids agree and being the good parent that I am they were exposed to all of it . We had the records / cd's going when they were growing up more than the TV was on

He always told me I was the best little girl in town & I would make a great wife & he never knew how he held my total heart in his hand. The love of my life. My Forever Man. This song still brings tears to my eyes all these years later.
@@colingeddes2172 It did. I married someone else & I have a wonderful life & a beautiful daughter. Johnnie is still single at age 73. I still see him around town time to time & I call him once in a while & it always ends with, "I Love You." from both of us. Sometimes it works best to just stay friends who TRULY love each other! Johnnie was/is a biker, a cowboy, a Cajun, a Vietnam veteran, a farmer. Just everything!

Pretty much, a lot of rap and pop is uninspired or literally just sounds in an incoherent order. Although, turn the lights back on by Billy Joel is really good and released in march

Sing along ....
There's a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time away
And talk about their homes
And there's a girl in this harbor town
And she works layin' whiskey down
They say, Brandy, fetch another round
She serves them whiskey and wine
The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"Yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea"
Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the North of Spain
A locket that bears the name
Of the man that Brandy loved
He came on a summer's day
Bringin' gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn't stay
No harbor was his home
The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes
When he told his sailor stories
She could feel the ocean fall and rise
She saw its ragin' glory
But he had always told the truth, Lord, he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand
At night when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man who's not around
She still can hear him say
She hears him say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
It is, yes it is
He said, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"

Bitter sweet memories of days gone by!
Deep
Garret Gray I think it's more that the sailors know that their "calling" is greater than settling down with Brandy. She is fated to live a lonely life not because these men prefer the sea, but because she is hopelessly in love with one of them and can't help it
Excellent way of looking at it. This song keeps on giving!
I like to think of the sea as the same thing as traveling today. One can't settle down if they have a burning desire to travel for extended periods of time.
Very profound .....
Back when songs told a story. It's like watching a movie with my ears. Amazing piece of work. Beautiful love story. Would love to see a video of this
Indeed. Not like the modern "cheating" or "breakup" or "revenge" songs like of today. But it was about a tragic story of two people who fell in love but belonged to different worlds, as one waits and longs to see someone who may never return.
