  • In this video, I'm doing three different tests over 3 days to test the power usage and cooling capabilities of the Dometic RTX-2000 12v Air Conditioner in my Ram Promaster 3500 Extended.
Day 1 is just the AC unit
Day 2 is the AC Unit plus the Maxxair Fan
Day 3 is with the Sleeping Area blocked off

Appreciate your video on this unit. For anyone doing this kind of testing I highly recommend the SensorPush Bluetooth temperature/humidity sensors. They record temp/humidity continuously at 1 min intervals and it’s stored on the device until you connect with the app on your phone. All the data is then downloaded and you have a nice interactive historical plot. The HT1 works well but the HT.w is a little more accurate and weatherized.

Nice video! Did you end up doing the retest with the max air fans?

I just use the ac by itself when it's needed. The Maxxair doesn't seem to help when combined with the ac.

Perhaps a chliché but I find Victron not cheap but worth every dime. Not sure which multiplus you have and also not sure if the newest models still have the starter battery trickle charger function. There is a tiny button at the bottom in the center to turn it on or off. Again I don’t know may this function is still a available. Anyways pretty awesome setup! Best regards, Albert 🇳🇱

Thanks! Victron components are nice products. I don't think my Multiplus has that option. Also, it isn't hooked up to the starter battery.

Very nice. I like the idea of walling the sleeping area for these relative low BTU units. Could you imagine if you had a 15k Coleman Mach on the roof? It would probably be a refrigerator. But I know you're trying to go DC as a whole.

Thanks! This unit is about 6700 btus. The Coleman unit would probably double the power draw plus the inverter, but it would cool much faster. It would be interesting to see how low of a draw it would use to maintain one it reaches the set temp. I considered a mr. cool mini-split but wasnt sure i could find an atractive way to hide the compressor.

@@redgiantvan189 yep, the issue is that these units are 12v, at 24v they are much better. Hopefully more 24v options will be available.

@@lkazanov The RTX-2000 comes in a 24 volt model, though I'm not sure anyone in the US sells it. It would probably have to be purchased and shipped from Europe.

I just installed mine today and it seemed to run just fine but on the display, there is a little battery symbol that is flashing. I read the manual but I’m confused why it would be flashing if I’m running off my battery bank of 4x100ah battle borne. I haven’t installed solar yet but that’s next. Still learning and looking to understand the system. Do you have any suggestions?

If you hooked up the battery monitor, you don't need it. The Dometic RTX2000 was built as a Semi-Truck air conditioner which hooked up to the Semi's batteries. The under voltage protection is designed to prevent the AC from draining and damaging the truck's lead-acid batteries based on the voltage it detects. If you have a system where your batteries are protected from over-draining (which you do), then you don't need the Dometic RTX-2000 battery monitor. So for instance, on my system, the batteries don't have a BMS built in so mine are protected from over-draining by the Victron components I installed (Smart Battery Protect & VE.Bus BMS). Your Battleborns will have a BMS built into each battery which protects them from over-draining. So the only thing you need to hook up is the main power through the 80Amp fuse. So on my system, the AC will never drain the batteries before the entire electrical system itself shuts down.

is it common for the Dometic RTX 2000 to squeak after install? it's driving myself and my passengers nuts

    • @redgiantvan189
      @redgiantvan189  2 роки тому

Do you mean while you're driving? Mine does not squeak. It should be resting on the rubber gasket. The only other place it could squeak is the struts that hold it inside the van. Perhaps one of the bolts is loose or it's not tight enough against the ceiling. Squeaks typically mean something is moving and rubbing. Maybe have someone get up on the roof and give it a shake while you inspect inside. I have a piece of 1/4" plywood between the struts and the metal of the roof. It could be that if your struts are in contact with the metal of the van.

Not good since you have NO reflective sun shades on all your windows inside!!

    • @redgiantvan189

Not sure what youre referring to. All my shades are reflective. The front shades we made have reflectix inside and all the Arctic Tern windows have reflective shades built in.

I wasn't really testing the shades. The purpose was to see if the dometic can effectively cool the van. It can. But to address your concer, if you look at 11:05, you can see the front windshield shade and the driver's side shade in place The sun was on the driver's side of the van. Those have Reflectix on both sides of Thinsulate and then are covered with Sunbrella fabric. Just for your information, I've measured a 50° difference between the window side vs the inside of the van when the sun is beating down on them. So they work very well. The Arctic Tern window shades are not pulled down but the Acrtic Terns are an Acrylic window which also limits the amount of heat transferred through them (less transmissive than glass). But it is possible to pull them down if I needed to do that. The outside of the shade is a reflective surface. All that said, despite the fact that the Artic Tern window shades were not pulled down and the passenger shade was not in place, it still worked well. Adding those would just improve the results.
