  • You can see the dust storm rolling from the south direction over the peaks of the South Mountain range. The storm moves in from the south and is heading towards the north west direction. You can see Audrey moving the chairs out of the way of the strong winds and rain. To the north of us, we can see the skyline of downtown Phoenix, Sky Harbor Airport and Camelback Mountains. To date this dust storm is the largest of all dust storms.
    The dust storm was estimated to be 50 miles wide at its peak as the wall of sand raced from Tucson towards Phoenix at nearly 30 mph.

    funable500 This one on July 5 2011 was the largest of all the dust storms to date and we were not harmed although it did felt like "the end of the world feeling". The next day we saw the dust and mud it left on the ground, roof tops and solar electric panels. I think you will see these in desert areas where there is little vegetation to hold the loose sand from being blown upwards.

    So far to date this one on July 5th is the biggest one that happened and since then two smaller unnoticeable dust storms followed during our monsoon season.

    @funable500 Really?Here in Arizona dust storms are not very scary to us but when the hail storm came everyone was pretty much scared.As you can tell having hail storm isn't really the weather we usually have in Arizona.

    @EASheatalerts771 Thanks I learned from you about the Fujita Scale of EF0 to EF5 for tornadoes. I did look at some old pictures of Dust Bowl in Kansas and you are right in that it looked exactly like what we experienced here. I thought Kansas is green with little desert environment unlike us in Phoenix Arizona?

    @kdragon487 As for home nothing was affected except for my neighbor that had a small tree called the Palo Verde that got uprooted due to the strong winds. The following morning, the walk deck and the solar panels were covered with patches of mud which was formed from dust and rain. It was easily cleaned by spraying water over them.The following morning, the walk deck and the solar panels were covered with patches of mud which was formed from dust and rain. I

    @EASheatalerts771 I guess our dust storms are here in Phoenix Arizona are probably not as bad as the tornadoes you get in Kansas right?

    Does the dust stick to the ground like snow?

    • @cmleong
      @cmleong  7 років тому +1

      It washes off easily but covers the roof and roads like a layer of thick dust.

      Scott, dust storm are a nuisance but not harmful especially when you are in a house that is built today. The strong winds (not as strong as tornadoes) and dust are the only two things you need to deal with after it dies down.

      Yes you are right that we did see the recent dust storm occurred at 8:00 pm July 3rd 2014 and we saw this one coming as we were cleaning the deck for July 4th gathering. We did not film it as it was not as big as the one recorded here. However one of our neighbor's shingle roof was lifted up and another neighbor's wood fence got blown down.
