My mom now 82 went to school at the deaf and blind school. In 2020 me and my sister surprised her with a trip to visit her beloved school she always told us about. She has dementia and when we pulled up to the school it was like she was transported back in time. It’s a memory I will always cherish.❤
Thank you so much for taking me back to one of my favorite places in the world! I lived in Harrisonburg for about fifteen years and loved visiting Staunton. As a theatre person, I loved visiting Blackfriars!
i grew up in dallas texas and now a proud resident of staunton va i’ve moved a couple times and never have i felt so at home. The historic architecture of downtown and the site seeing you can see from the top of the railroad bridge, the authentic shakespearean theatre, the people, the food- best place i’ve lived by FAR. I’ve always wanted to visit Europe and living here feels like the perfect balance. Genuinely does not feel like you’re in America when you’re walking around downtown, guess that’s why they have the harry potter festivals here.
Staunton is such a beautiful place in the Shenandoahs, I'm from southeast Virginia but my sister studies at Mary Baldwin University, which is basically the heart of the city, in fact the Wilson Library is just outside the grounds of the school. It's got that small city hospitality with a mountain twist.
Give it a chance for sure! I'm originally from the Seattle suburbs, and after experiencing Charlottesville for several years I almost gave up on Virginia. I love Staunton.
There are much better places to live in the State of Virginia (I am talking the western part of Virginia) that are absolutely beautiful, but Staunton is not one of them.
If you get out of the city of Staunton, and travel the back roads, I have to say that it is a beautiful area; however, you are not going to find that in Staunton proper. You can see the mountains more in Waynesboro than in Staunton. In Staunton, there is no view.
Awesome travel video! I really appreciate this episode on Staunton, Va. From what I've seen here, it's a great town! It has amazing architecture, food, theater and people I'm sure. Thank you for a wonderfully informative show.
You need to live here to know what it is really like. This guy mentions facts that were applicable back in 2015. This is 2023 and Staunton changed drastically and for the worse. The beauty that was once here is no longer.
Don't let the video fool you. Staunton has drastically changed. Traffic, fast food places galore, vacant/abandoned store fronts, car washes and tire places on almost every road (don't know why we need so may of those. Since there are so many, in a few years, they will go out of business and the properties will remain vacant and abandoned. There is a realtor here in Staunton who has a listing on any property that has nothing on it. Trees are being torn down so this guy can sell the properties to put up more fast food places. As far as the downtown area, it is historic, and quaint, but there are many businesses that have closed since COVID. Many vacant stores.
Don't be surprised. The video is misleading. Once you get out of Staunton and travel the back roads of this western part of Virginia, the scenery is awesome! But not in Staunton itself.
Beautiful town ''Staunton Virginia''. Amazing the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum and the most incredible indoor theater in the World "William Shakespeare's Blackfriars".❤💯👍🏼
Home of Jedidiah Hotchkiss , Map maker for Robert e Lee and Stonewall Jackson. My great grandfather who's buried there, he's featured in the frontier museum. Maps are in the Smithsonian. Home of the Dejarnette Center, a mental hospital I worked at, now known as the most haunted place in Virginia. Also Western State mental hospital. There are very nice creative people there. The Findells, glassblowers, artists.. My wife was a chef at McCormick's.
Ha ha ha! When I first moved to Virginia, I kept calling it "Stawnton". The funny thing was that nobody ever corrected me until I went to the Woodrow Wilson museum.
Slavery IS a part of history and yes many families in Augusta County had slaves. Why omit slavery from history? It was a way of life THEN, and its NOT now. People need to stop trying to rewrite or hide history. bad or good. History is just that....history
Using the term "unwilling captives" made me cringe. I also paused and considered not finishing the video. If the goal was to be politically correct by not using the correct term of slavery, the contrary was accomplished. Beautiful town, but its history should not be sanitized.
hi the travel guy. i am in Pakistan but friend my mine got business in harrrsenburg and want me to move in there. It was best idea let know best place in Vergenia. Your presentation was fantastic specially the Staunton.Good very good
In the beginning why did you say, 'hold on before you look away?' If people have that type of attitude to begin with, why would anyone welcome them here in the first place??
Funny you should mention that. The idea was to elude to our short attention spans and that places will surprise you when you least expect it. I do not believe I executed that very well! It has always bothered me a little. The fact is, I think Staunton is a very cool town. Lord knows I wish I’d said it better! (Sigh)
Staunton might have been a nice place in 2015, but now, in 2023, it surely is not. It has changed drastically. Staunton no longer has that small town charm. Fast food places galore! lining the roads. Small strip malls and shops that have been vacated and abandoned are an eyesore. The traffic, for a small town, has become horrible. There is a realtor here in Staunton who has erected signs all over attempting to sell every piece of wooded ground there is in order to build another facility. The beauty of wooded areas is no longer. Do we need 10+ hotels in Staunton??? We have several tire places and auto parts stores and car washes wtihin minutes of each other. In a few years, their businesses will go down the tubes and those buildings will remain empty and become eyesores. Crime has also risen. It once was a beautiful town in which to live -- no longer. Very sad.

That is a marvelous story! Thank you for sharing.

You are sooooo welcome! As a former theatre person, I loved visiting that theatre. And I think Staunton is a pretty cool town!

I lived in Staunton for eight years and loved it. Gypsy Hill Park is one of a kind. I highly recommend seeing that when you visit the area.
I Love staunton to I've been there so many times all by my self
Brilliant!!!! Have dinner at the shack!
Moved to Staunton from the east end of Long Island (yes, I’m a dirty transplant) and I love it. It really is a special little town.
It's an adorable place but the history.. have you been to the dejarenett asylum?
Congrats you dirty little transplant!
I'm from Staunton Va it's my favorite place home sweet home

Thanks for the note!!! I couldn’t agree more!
I love the Statlers! I was fortunate to see a lot of their July 4th shows in Gypsy Hill Park. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much!!!
We live in Staunton! It’s so beautiful here. 😊
Is high speed internet common?
@@VanGoWanderlust it’s is common for the most parts, in certain areas it is not the best, other than that it’s fairly reliable
My sister lives there, awsome.
It really is!
Except for the rampant corruption which has such a rich and vibrant history in dear ol’ Staunton, amiright??😉😉
Give it a chance for sure! I'm originally from the Seattle suburbs, and after experiencing Charlottesville for several years I almost gave up on Virginia. I love Staunton.
100% agree! Have you had dinner at the Shack?
What didn't you like about Charlottesville? I've been exploring moving there from Massachusetts
There are much better places to live in the State of Virginia (I am talking the western part of Virginia) that are absolutely beautiful, but Staunton is not one of them.
Staunton is close to the Blueridge Mountains. I was born there in Kings daughters Hospital. I grew up in Waynesboro about 10 minutes away!
Excellent! It is a beautiful part of the country.

Make an annual trip there every fall. Ancestors Cleveland buried at Thorn Rose. During the war, grandmother lived near Mary Baldwin.
Excellent!

Home of The Statler Brothers, I already knew I needed to go! Great video!!!
Thank you! Have you made it there yet?
Coming there soon for travel nursing , glad I watched this
Excellent! Good luck in school!

Such an amazing place to live!
Yes!! I am so happy to hear that! I really enjoyed visiting a few times over the years!
Had a great time watching! Just subscribed and shared!!!
Tha k you very much!
Hey great video! Question: doesnt that place flood pretty bad? Or is there a section that doesn't?
Great question…I wish I had the answer!
It is in the
Shenandoah Valley not nestled in the Appalachian mountains. Yes, the Appalachian mountains are near we’re not nestled…
Thank you for the correction!
Love this🥳✨🔥

Staunton is so beautiful!
It really is!
You had me at pancake fits in mouth
Ha ha ha! When I first moved to Virginia, I kept calling it "Stawnton". The funny thing was that nobody ever corrected me until I went to the Woodrow Wilson museum.
Leave it to those guys to set you straight! I love that museum!
No one really knows the correct pronunciation lol, most do call it "Stan-ton" but some people and the media usually say "Stawn-ton"
Beyond my backyard? this is my backyard 😂
Excellent! What a quaint corner of the world!
This is the birthplace of the greatest researcher in 🌎, the late, great Eustace Mullins!
Excellent!
Place is nice, my hometown
Excellent! Thank you Mr. H!
"unwilling captives"??? tf i think you mean SLAVES
Seriously!!!!??? Is even acknowledging slavery impossible?
Well he's right!
Slavery IS a part of history and yes many families in Augusta County had slaves. Why omit slavery from history? It was a way of life THEN, and its NOT now. People need to stop trying to rewrite or hide history. bad or good. History is just that....history
Yeah, that's pretty tone deaf

literally moved here exactly yesterday and it's already pretty cool
Fantastic!
Do yourself a favor junior, move out to the county, Swoope or Fishersville .
Staunton is not located on the map of Virginia as this show pointed out
I think we could have done a little better with that! Thanks! Remember to subscribe to my channel, please! Thank you!
Staunton was a beautiful place. Now all the growth going on its getting ruined. Downtown is ok. But the area near I 64 is a mess.
Oh no!!
Awesome video! Would love to live there sometime...check out the edit I made of Staunton! :)
Thanks! Will do!
The statler brothers
Yes!
Nice place to visit but I wouldn't move there unless you plan to open your own business. No jobs
Thanks for sharing!
@@Erikthetravelguy I currently live in staunton. I drive 40 minutes 1 way to work

Sorry to hear this news!
Way too many commercials...very distracting. I’m out.
Sorry about that!
My hometown. I left it for good this time. It stinks.
Ha! Nothing like a little hometown pride! Where did you move to?
Where did you move to?
lol I miss it sometimes, but yeah there's pretty much nothing to do if you're 14-40
Looks like a bunch pf 1776 ppl live here. Doesnt look safe
In my experience it was very safe.
I’m sure it was, in your experience. The place is a cesspool.
@Kinshasa Brown you’ll be perfectly safe physically.
Joymi might just be a racist. Just sayin
