  • Here are 6 questions that you can ask a therapist! You can think of it as interviewing your therapist to see if that person is the best for you. It can feel very vulnerable and awkward to talk to someone that you do not know. However, I believe the therapy space should be humanistic and not feel like a power struggle. These are questions asked from google and from people who have asked me over the years that I found very helpful with creating a healing and open space! Never be afraid to ask questions. This is your journey, time, and money!
✟ May this be fruitful for you ✟

5 years late to say thank you so much for making this video. Was having some serious anxiety about starting therapy again, as the first time around I felt steamrolled and dismissed. I’m so happy to learn that I was just working with a more “directing” therapist. Thank you for sharing a way to express or ask about different styles of therapy!

THANK YOU for having a video like this! I swear, you're the only person on UA-cam who actually has the IMPORTANT questions to ask a therapist! I was searching everywhere on how to vet and question a therapist for my session one tomorrow and way too many videos were just like "just be open minded... don't be scared... your therapist isn't judging you"-- BRUH I'M TRYING TO MAKE SURE MY THERAPIST IS ACTUALLY GONNA BE ABLE TO HELP ME!

Thank you!! For being so real, and making me realize that I have a voice and an option to question a therapist in our first interactions before choosing them to see me thru my issues. I'm a people pleaser and I have such a hard time telling anyone they don't meet my standard, cause I literally love everyone and find ways to love people thru all the messed up shit they do. Forgiving is my nature. But in a professional relationship, it's crucial to see them for their strength and capabilities to deal with my issues before we start working on my goals and issues. You've inspired me to be choosey with who I work with!!!! God bless you and your talent and openness to share with the world. I took notes on this video, I'm excited to start getting help ❤️

I literally had the thought to flip the tables on my counselor & came across this video💥 Every session counselor insults or condemns me. Plus she’s unaware of:
    •Shadow Work/Heal Inner Child
    •DBT skills
    •Grey Rocking
    •Detoxing Survivor Mode
    •The Work w/Byron Katie
Just to name a few skills she lacks as a licensed therapist🤦🏽‍♀️

Thank you for this video! It would have been so helpful to have your questions in hand when I began (and eventually completed) therapy many years ago. Asking questions makes you more of a partner in your own therapy, which can only help with creating a way forward. I will share this with others, especially with young adults considering therapy as a way to handle their challenges.

I feel like my new therapist has the best intentions to help but, she just keeps minimizing the things that concern me. If I talk about my family dynamics (which I do not enjoy talking about, but I understand it's necessary), she feels the need to talk about her family dynamics and, tell me about her life and her kids. If I talk about the multiple sexual assaults I've been through, she finds a way to make it about my family dynamics and then hers. If I talk about how I think it'd be beneficial for me to be tested for ADD, she talks about how the "symptoms" I have been having are common to most of the population so I'm "normal"

I like your style. My counselor never smiles until end of the session. I feel more like a case study than a client getting help. My counselor never admitted they could not help me/us. My husband still want to look pretty like you after all those sessions we went to. And I still want to wear the pants. We need help. Please make video on counselors stepping up to admit when they dont have the skill to help someone. Thanks

This was a great video. I agree with almost everything accept the last question. As a clinically licensed psychotherapist, I honestly feel as if a therapist should not self disclose with any and every client just because they request. I find this to definitely be the case with clients who either disclose or present with certain behaviors consistent with personality disorders. In that event, self disclosing personal information is a NO for me.

Is it appropriate to ask your Counselor about her Marital Status? Is it appropriate to invite and treat her for dinner as a compliments? How strict is the rules for the Counselors or Therapists for them to observe and follow? What if both of you fall in love to each for the better? We are just humans right. What are the consequences? Thank you

now u only need to steal views from kati😅. I mean collaborate. sharing is caring
u r very photogenic and presentable, presented and edited very nicely,
definitely gonna ask the bit about "strengths" & I wanna extend the question about "have u been in therapy" to how long/what are the big numbers on going to therapy; cuz (sorry if I'm confusing) I am now at 30+ sessions. I wanna know what it feels like, & what to do from there

Remember to think critically folks! While this may sound like nice advice, what are the sources of these claims background? What makes them an expert on this topic? Have they studied therapy and earned bachelors degree? A masters, a PhD? Not just with this video, but with EVERYTHING you see and read on the internet. Take a course on critical thinking before you take advice from influencers on the internet.

Seriously seriously .. these videos are important ... we give this industry wayyyyy too much credit without doing OUR OWN research ... which overall decreases the quality of the THERAPY or Psychiatry that happens
