(DIY hunting) ELK TALK - Randy Newberg's "SYSTEM" for finding Post-Rut Bulls

  • Hunting elk with Randy Newberg during the Post-Rut. This ELK TALK video describes the most difficult time to tag a public land bull elk. The rut is subsiding. Old bulls know it is time to find sanctuary. Survival is dependent upon finding these sanctuaries where hunters don't want to go. Food is the secondary need. Find security near food. Post-rut is usually the most highly pressured season and coincides with most rifle seasons. This period is usually the last three weeks of October.

    I always thought this man was just another hype youtube hunter but he doesn't bullshit! You have to physically do all this to understand what he's saying. I was out scouting yesterday during 4th rifle (probably more like late season instead of post rut but they are almost the same concepts). I bumped into a 10 point bull he was out feeding on a small aspen slope at 0900 in an isolated area bordered by private land where there is no hunting allowed. It was only 1 mile away from a road but to get there I had to cross through 2 steep canyons. Its true that they go to places where there will be no hunters and they won't be feeding in open meadows like the cows and spikes

    Randy, as a Minnesota native and new Colorado resident I find your videos both informative and relatable. Thank you so very much for all your hard work! As a new hunter to big game I find them more valuable than a lot of things available. If you were ever interested in helping a new to the west guy out, I'd be happy to soak up more of your knowledge. Thanks again...I'm so excited for the fall!

    Hi Randy, love your shows, they are really informative. The other shows online are just shows, they are not informative at all. I was wondering if you would consider doing a couple of video shows hunting Roosevelt elk over here on the Oregon Coast. I have been trying for the last six years with no luck. Where I hunt there is a lot of logging going on. The elk are there but they are down in the bowels of the really dense forest. You almost need a team with you to flush them. Anyways I could go on and on. Thanks for your time.
    Keep up the good work with your shows and your advocacy for public lands and game management.
    Sincerely,
    Brent Carter

      That is a hunt I am currently researching. I want to do it, for the experience of seeing the country and the challenge of an animal I know very little about. Thanks for watching.

    Nice presentation, I Bow hunt in the Canadien Rockies. There is lots of streams, coulees, small lakes, marshes and high mountain meadow/prairies. I am still looking to find WHAT food/grass do they eat.
    So far snow is not around this year, would you still seldomly use elk doe call to trigger action?
    Cheers

      I would ask a local biologist. They probably know the grass choices elk can select from in your area. Really warm here in Montana, also. No snow. I don't use cow cows very much, except in archery season, but even then I mostly use bull bugles. Thanks for watching.

    Randy I really am enjoying this but have a request. I live in Utah and alot of it is spike and cow. could you make a video on that process, also and or a trophy deer episode? thanks for all you do and making great adventure's and sharing your experience.

      +Jason Secrist - Maybe someday, Jason. Right now we are focusing on our highest volume of email questions; most of which are related to finding mature bull elk on public land. And honestly, I would hope somebody else would do the mule deer series. I'm pretty marginal when it comes to mule deer and I seem to prove that ever few years. Good luck this year. Hope your mailbox is full of tags.

    Hey Randy,
    Wondering how your approach would change when hunting for cows at this time of year?
    Thank you

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  7 років тому

      Look for food, food, food. Cows are looking for the best food with the least expenditure of energy, all year round.

    last few days of October first 4 or 5 days of November post rut or late season ?

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  6 років тому +1

      In most instances, late season. But, that would depend on latitude, which will drive the weather patterns and snow conditions.

    Randy, I will be hunting in Utah this year and I am pretty new to the area. I will be be using the general season tag this year and I will be hunting in the Uinta Mountains. I have been doing a lot of E-scouting using google earth and onXmaps. However, the season starts October 7th on the back half of the rut. I have been putting in a lot of hours mapping out possible areas for "post rut" locations where bulls might go, but should I also be planning on zones that would be ideal conditions for the rut as well?

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  7 років тому

      I would map both, as you will be at the time when the peak rut period transitions to the post-rut period.

    Randy, please teach us how to find cow elk in october and late season.cow tag is the only tag i can buy every year but still have a hard time to find them.Most the time i find bull instead of cow.thanks for your great lessons.

    • @Fresh_Tracks
      @Fresh_Tracks  7 років тому +2

      For cows in late season, it is one of the easiest seasons to find elk. Find the best food near the winter range and you will find cows. In October, find the best food on the transition range, distance to/from winter range according to weather, and you will find a lot of cows. Good luck.
