It's 2023, and I just got to see them play the Theater at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles for the '83 - '23 40th anniv. of Death Cult! They're playing about a dozen dates in Europe, but this was the one and only Death Cult gig in North America. SOOOO glad I was able to get a ticket! Moya and Sanctuary were the encore!
1983. I can never ever forget watching this program every week in my bed in my bedroom. This particular footage is what introduced me to SDC. Been a fan ever since!?! What amazes me is the amount of 'The Cult' fans out there that didn't even know that this where their foundations were laid & IMHO were by far the more classier!?! She Sells apart!?!.........
First song I heard by them,as Southern Death Cult,on the radio in early 1983 when studying A Levels at college. All kinds of new and current music was brought in and played in Its youth wing, which was run by a nice blondy-haired woman called Moya.
Obviously, Billy Duffy came later since he was playing in in the band Theatre of Hate when Ian Astbury was playing in the Southern Death Cult. Wasn't the SDC guitarist's name Barry Jepsen?
Then again, they did perform a ROCKING version of this SDC song (Moya ) as an encore when they were The Cult (as seen in their Live @ The Lyceum video). They should definitely add this song as an encore whenever they do a farewell tour. If it not for the Southern Death Cult there will be no Death Cult & thus there would be no Cult.
I saw the Cult open for GnR at Milton Keynes Bowl......The Cult blew them away and owned the stage that day - NEVER seen a live performance better than that. I loved GnR and loved the Cult before that day......but as live bands go - nobody has come close to the Cult IMO.
@@corvideity No they're not the same band. The Southern Death Cult was Ian's band before he formed The Cult. He took half the previous band's name and formed Death Cult. But he later changed it to simply The Cult.
Ian Astbury has the best voice ever, he moves like no one else, he has such a cool swagger to him, it just sucks me in every time, he is the best front man singer and dancer ever to me ... ;)
I always thought he was trying to mimic Jim Morrison in a way.. But, I'm thinking now maybe he just happens to have a very similar voice and interest in Native Americans by coincidence..
I truly believe he was a darker, nastier Adam Ant for the underground Goth movements. I was drawn to it, easily. Adam Ant ended his Indian thing way too soon for my liking.Michael Guerra
This just blows me away. There's heart and soul there! It's so rare these days. Everything is so 0ver produced and paint-by-numbers. Seeing this is like suddenly having a good, home cooked meal after a steady diet of Big Macs. I'll take real feeling over the Backstreet Boys any day, thanks.
Went to see sdc when they started doin the local uni,s ex ex always loved them followed the the cult all my life I went to see the cult at apollo Manchester last year fukin amazin one ov the best bands in the world the back catalogue they had they could ov done 3 nights ther to do all the songs but was enough for me and see the transition off astbury n Duffy incredible keep rockin the world xx
Hats (or feathers) off to SOUTHERN DEATH CULT for a truly difficult gig back in the day when, after a successful show supporting I think Theatre of Hate, they came back to our city, Plymouth, and played a gig in the snack bar of the Ballards junior swimming pool. I don't think they were too pleased and there was certainly no encore...but lots of crisps. I danced so frantically one of my arm floats burst. Not the only disastrous gig this city has mustered. So belated thanks guys, hats off.
If I'm right in thinking this, after touring with Theatre of Hate he then poached Billy Duffy and Nigel Preston off them and SDC were no more and became Death Cult and ToH became Spear of Destiny.
@Lovesickblueboy Never got to see them live which is why I thank God for UA-cam. Ian is so fierce in these SDC performances! They are just brilliant. You just don't see this mix of talent and passion anymore. One of my favorite songs of all time. Absolutely flawless.
No kidding?!! Barry was a great bassist, really brought SDC, Getting the Fear and Into a Circle's music to life. Three of my fave bands, one of my fave bassists :)
Awesome song. My own band cover this, it's a truly one-of-a-kind song. The perfect blend of rock attitude, great lyrics, tribal rhythms and passion! Excellent
Yeah, I used to have them on video tape that I bought in Camden Market around 1992. I wish I could see those two songs again, you are right simonchin, they are great versions.
it was filmed at the ace brixton for the tv show on channel 4 called whatever you want ,in the end over 2 shows 4 tracks were shown including a little intro/poem by ian lyndsey as he was called then
Absolutely incredible. They were one of the greatest bands of all them if not THE greatest. I too am desperately looking for Today and The Crypt from this concert as my video tape of it deteriorated years ago.
I'm super fan and 1999 I was in Miami in a concert , so cool!, But today I don't know why, I come to find out about their entire origin as a band and even more so about a song whose title is my last name. Incredible story to my surprise. So even more I feel linked to this super band!!
This was before Billy Duffy joined they were supporting Duffy,s band then Duffy got sacked Ian came looking for him and formed the cult the rest is history as they say went to see them 30 plus yrs ago then went to apollo Manchester last year fukin still amazin Duffy astbury magic
never seen video of them, so this is cool. looked for their FB page u did, but didnt find it ( only a wiki reference). the opening line to this track is one of my favs. the kids of the coca cola nation are too doped up to realize , time is running out . . .
I saw them a couple of times live at the theatre in Covt Garden where the Lion King is on now ..... They were very good indeed. This was always one of their anthems. Got the crowd ripping.
the bass player has gone on to be a really successful tour manager and promoter rep with live nation, hes worked with bands like tool, foo fighters, placebo ect and hes teaching business at a college in brighton, hes my teacher
Mint bass player blew me away when I first seen them on the tube very original loved it. Still do Syd Presley experience also blew me away ain't music awesome
One of, if not the most powerfully stirring songs that can ever have been sprung. I defer also to Radio Transmission by Joy Divison on a par. None unto us was given such truth in melody. I wear my heart on my sleeve
@SpencerRoxx there was many fantastic bands at this time that went there entire career without selling out and committing commercial suicide. look at bands like siouxsie and the banshees, the cure, bauhaus, alien sex fiend to name a few. and i bet they all made a living.
I saw GnR open for the Cult on the Electric tour.GnR sounded like an Aerosmith cover band. They were OK but not fully formed .This was about a month before appetite was released.
I kind of agree with Mookie, I love SDC but still.. I think they kind of broke up before they actually got fully going. They have aspects of a really great band and they are.. They just didn't stick around enough to be known as truly great. Kind of sad, but that's what makes their music so precious.
The beginning reminds me of .38 Special... LOL. But I love every incarnation of this band, and see nothing really wrong with .38 Special, it's just funny for some odd reason
To the dude who commented on how Ian and Billy look back at this as a joke is LIE. Ian is very proud of this band as are the other members (I run their Facebook page and have talked to the members personally) AND Billy wasn't in THIS band, so get your facts straight. Anyone wanting to join the group, active band members present too..... we'd love to have you! Just look up SouthernDeathCult
Agreed. I mean come on... none of it was associated under one genre untill the late 80s. It was a movement of music it's in original form. Before it was "Goth".

@@MegaYenso your philosophy is flawed. Everyone has some form of culture. Your definition is probably flawed. You're probably very old as well, so you choose to belittle the youth because you can't seem to understand them anymore.
Here's a novelity: Southern Death Cult, Death Cult, the Cult. It's all different. It's all GREAT rock music. That's all that matters!
Sdc I straight up goth rock

I saw the Cult live when they opened for Billy Idol. The Cult made a life lasting impression on me, I listen to them just about every day.
Me too! Great show. I love Billy Idol also. Glad he's made a comeback.

Wish I had a chance to see those cats live. It would have been awesome. I did get to see The Cult though in 1987, and it was great.
If only it was a bit lighter.. I sat on the stage at this gig next to Buzz.. Such a great band :)
Greatly entertaining. Wonderful sound coming from both the drums🥁👍and guitars 🎸🎸.

I'm (only now?) realizing that the SDC was fuckin' way better than their later stuff which I loved and was devoted to....This is so good!
Thatcherite England had its moments of hope, after all. This occasion must have been one of the greatest.

THE BEST version of this band, fresh in the UK before they sold out to sell in America
I still loved them after they hopped the pond. But I hear you. Feel sorry for those that only knew The Cult
Their best song.
