So glad i found this video. I have been a carpenter for about 7 years. But im still in a position where i have so much to learn about so many things. I have been doing a few things in my grandmothers house for her. I recently had to redo a pantry into a bathroom. But in doing so i had to remove the kitchen sink and cabinets in the room. Pretty much the entire room is different of course. Now i am improvising where to put the kitchen sink and cabinet. No place is ideal. It will not look right but we are doing what we can with what we got. So i put the cabinet together and am at the countertop installation. This video is going to be extremely helpful. I have my countertop and coincidentally it looks exactly like the one in the video. My only question is at the end of the countertop on one side there are 2 little nobs sticking out at each end of one side if that makes sense. I'm assuming they dont go all the way through and i can cut through them? I have to cut the counter to fit against the wall and am assuming i cut those off. Well cut the piece from that side? Appreciate any response on this asap. I als want to know do i need to use a laminate blade on the saw i'm going to use to cut the countertop? I'm going to go buy one for my jogsaw and will get one for my circular saw/skillsaw at the same time if necessary. Hopefully someone reads this and can answer those questions for me and then im off. Appreciate this video. It will be really helpful. My 93 grandmother will appreciate it. I'm here caretaker. I am 44 and have somewhat put my life on hold to keep her out of a nursing home. These little quality of life changes are so expensive. I'm using the little bit of skil i have accumulated to try and go a long way. Thanks for this video it's very informative. I was apprehensive about trying to do this myself. But watching this helps! My wife wants to keep our old sink which is an old white cast iron sink how can or what do you suggest to make a cutout for that?
Hi Joe, do you mean water going under the lip of the sink once it is installed in the laminate countertop? If so, you put either plumber putting or silicone around the hole cut in the countertop prior to installing the sink which will provide the seal.
Really excellent video, and even more excellent work! Your detail work is really nice and clean, your video straightforward and helpful, and it is very much appreciated!
Absolutely great info! What if you have laminate countertops that are two separate pieces, and there is basically a seam that was never sealed properly directly in the middle running to the back corner of the wall. Now that seam has been water damaged from the water that gets splashed from the kitchen sink and the seam now looks raised up, like the particle board or whatever under the laminate, swelled. Is there any way to fix this?
Can we use an 80 tooth blade? I have a craftsman 5.5” circular saw. I used the tutorial to cut the hole for the sink and it was a success! (Although, wow it is certainly some work!) Thank you for the helpful videos! It saved us hundreds to get a laminate top and do it ourselves. We are also listing our house for sale to build and the old countertops had to go. This is a pretty quick and inexpensive upgrade.
Hi, I enjoyed that video. Do you have advice on how to remove a laminate countertop in order to relevel the cabinets? I want to reinstall the current countertop afterwards. Thank you!
my water accident in the attic from the water heater did extensive damage to both my garage/kitchen common drywall and my kitchen cabinets. I am sick of all the work but I am following these closely.
Nice video thank you There's nothing for me to bolt my countertops too so is it better to submit a square piece for each corner aren't do running Support
Thank you for the content. Is there any concerns about the front of the countertop breaking or warping due to the weight of the sink. It seemed very thin in the front. Thank you…
I really like/appreciate your video's. That being said though, I wouldn't attempt this myself. Same goes for the laminate sheeting project. There should be more reliable businesses that provide these moderate improvements/upgrades, that actually want the business & don't turn their nose up because it isn't a million dollar project. The psychological distress is definitely why I'm about to give up and resort to painting my damaged countertops in the new condo I bought, which is not my forever home and isn't worthy of a huge stone counter investment, sink, plumber, etc etc etc etc.......I have one more smaller, local kitchen designer coming (hopefully), and I'll see what he suggests that can maybe be budget friendly and considerable. Some places aren't meant to the Ritz but they're also not intended to be junky rentals, but no contractors consider that worth their bother, not even one on my street!! When you're improving property's, even if it's not a huge upgrade in value, it's still a positive for everyone because maintaining properties & structures demonstrates care and attracts good things. This is something everyone wins on. I think you do very well in explaining fairly thorough & patiently, how to do these projects for the average person with experience. I'm sure many have benefitted or tried with some success, due to your efforts. I personally think some things are meant to be done by someone who has experience and know-how/training, and where are they anymore!?! Liberalism ushered out professionalism & disciplined dedication. Resulting in no reliable companies or ethical standards and people afraid to work!! So I'd just figure out a temporary remedy for my scratched up counters, and it wouldn't likely sell so easily considering it doesn't have much else drawing people to them and it's a region where most people rent or own a house. There's a huge market for moderate house work, if anyone had the ambition they'd make a killing!!!! There are more of us than ultra wealthy which is what these home renovators seem to cater to. It isn't good for the economy/society when so many homes go undone.
On the end caps could you have made the top and backsplash flush and router off the bottom and back, wouldn’t that look better ? I’ve never done but jumped out at me
I have an endcap kit and was wondering how flush I should cut the countertop to the end of the cabinets so that a refrigerator can fit in the void space. Secondly, I was thinking of using 3/4" x 2.5" PVC boards as endstrips to raise the height of the laminate countertops so the drawers will open. Do you know if the glue will work on PVC boards?
Thanks for a great and informative video! The problem I'm having is that the laminate backsplash has pulled nearly half an inch from the wall. I had a contractor cut out a cabinet and install a dishwasher. The dishwasher is at the left end of the counter, with the stove next to it. The kitchen sink is to the right. Idk what he did, but the counter obviously does not have the support to stay flush to the wall. How do you secure the counter if the dishwasher is at the end?
Hey Trinity, you would need a dishwasher end panel to give the finish look on the side of the dishwasher in addition to a little support for the counter. Since you probably have existing cabinets you might have to do a bit of work to get one that matches. Best of luck with the project.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs thanks for the quick reply! Hmmm yea, my dishwasher is flush with the edge of the countertop. I think that's why he didn't put an edge. He put an edge in my other unit because there was room for one. Dang, I was afraid there may not be a solution :(
@@trinity1aee I think I have a similar setup. The dishwasher needs 24" for clearance, but it has a slightly narrower profile on the back and side of the unit. It might be possible to pull the dishwasher out and put a small ledger board on the back wall and side wall, the ledger board on the side wall will need to be about 4" shorter than the overall depth of the dishwasher due to the dishwasher having it's widest profile towards the front of the unit.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs I liked the router. I do have one (like most people) that has had very little use. But I like yours better. Maybe I would use that if I bought it.
I'm kicking myself for buying Home Depot "Heritage" Cabinets. I installed 5 uppers in about 20 minutes and I hit every stud dead center and they look good but I found out there's no glue holding the face plate on, only hundreds of 3/16th inch staples. I couldn't inspect the cabinets as they were in boxes so shame on me. I had to return 4 because the corners were smashed up. The bases were another treat, garbage material and I also had to build mine up or the counter would keep the drawers from opening (aack!) Plus these cabinets came with no corner braces so again, I had to improvise, it's really al too much. So now that I built up my counter tops with blocks and I have a 1 1/4 inch gap between the underside of my counter top and dishwasher mounting brackets...so I tore that out and put full strips which worked better...
I just put in another order with Cabinet Giant. I like their Gold Series - Ice White Shaker. The pricing has went up like everything else but the quality of construction is superior to the big box store cabinets.
Hey, at around 11.37 you say that you have a video for us on how to cut the end piece without the special rotary tool. I've searched and cannot find that video and i have to do it tonight, Could you please reply and post it asap? Would owe you a tonne,, Do I just use the exacto knife?
Hey Youssef, thanks for the request but right now I don't have a project where I could document that install. I will put in on the list and will try to document if I run across this project on the next few properties we renovate.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Hi Again. The countertop arrived today. Looks a bit intimidating. I ordered a 12 TPI handsaw that of course did not arrive before the countertop. Hopefully tomorrow so I can get busy😎
I would recommend the circular saw and if you want to do a dry run to make sure everything works as expected just cut off a piece shorter than you desired cut. Then you will be able to confirm everything worked on the practice cut then setup for the real cut. Best of luck.
Thank you for a great video. I've browsed your other videos and subscribed because you have such a variety of things that are on my To Do List. Please keep up the good work.
Won't the buildup strips raise the counter top bottom too high above the cabinet top? The front recess in the countertop is 1/2" and the strips are 3/4".
Is it acceptable instead of having a backsplash to use tiles on the wall all the way down to where the counter meets the wall and then calk where they meet ? I'm thinking of those new small tiles that come on a sheet that stick on and grouted after instelation.
Hey Susy, that is 100% acceptable. One thing to note is most of the in stock laminate countertops will come with the integrated backsplash but you could cut off the backsplash or special order your countertops without a backsplash. What you would like to do is standard and preferred for most granite or quartz countertops. Let me know if you have any other questions.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs that was fast .Thank you. The counters that I have now are outdated. They have "matching" backsplashes. I have been thinking about buying new counters and having them installed or taking the old ones and covering them with epoxy as I'm not crazy about the different materials available. But leaving off the back splashes. I have a small kitchen so buying new counters won't cost me an arm and a leg. But I was a carpenter when I was younger (mostly rough carpentry ,framing, etc.) so I enjoy doing things myself but since I'm old now I can't do the heavy parts. Would you mind telling me your opinion on epoxy for counter tops ?
If the existing counters are still in good condition what about getting new sheet vinyl with a pattern you like and using contact cement to adhere to the old surface. That is what I did for the little breakfast bar counter for this condo renovation. Here is the video: ua-cam.com/video/uObZY3YI6AM/v-deo.html
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Thank you for taking the time to give me this information. I'll be sure to watch that video this evening. That certainly would be easier for me to handle. I appreciate this. 🛠😊
Hi Dawn, I got these countertops from the instock supply at a home improvement store found here in the midwest called Menards. The company which makes the counters is called CustomCraft and the pattern is Silver Quartzite Laminate Countertop. www.menards.com/main/kitchen/countertops-laminate/all-countertops-laminate/customcraft-countertops-reg-laminate-countertop/94974feet/p-1561098548613.htm
I have laminate counter tops in my kitchen and both baths, that I want to replace. Just do not like the color. I want ot go with a retro look, with metal inside cove moldings and metal edge banding. The metal edge banding will require a horizontal groove to be cut into the edge, for the "T" rib of the banding to insert to. For such a thing, can this groove be cut into plywood, if necessary? I do not know, specifically what material the C/T base is made of, at this time.
Actually it is not glue for this one. You will see in the video where I use screws to secure the countertop to the cabinets. Best of luck on your project.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs We're using an old sink base cabinet as an island that doesn't have anything to attach the countertop to. Can I use the same hardware that you'd use to keep a sink in place?
@@jediknightguy82 if You and I are thinking sink clips I don’t believe that would work in your case. Sinks have a channel built in to hold one end of the sink clip. Your counter top I don’t believe would have that channel and would likely be too weak to make your own channel. I would guess you could make your own similar corner braces and mount the counter to them. It shouldn’t be too difficult to add those.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs End caps I got. I was going to buy the sheets but for not much more I got the hole countertop. The end caps cost me almost ast much as the counter. I needed 3 end caps. Once I get time I will try to install them.
@@dadof2903 hahahaha yep. The threads will actually rust and separate from the shaft of the screw hahahaha. I’ve Torn apart a Lot of bad carpentry probably 60 percent of these projects failed due to improper fasteners.
Does it matter what type of blade you use in your circular saw to make the straight cuts? I have a 7 inch construction blade. Will that work without splintering if I use tape and cut from the bottom?
Hey Linda, yeah the blade does matter in terms of setting yourself up the best to reduce the chances of chipping the laminate surface as a result of the cut. I used a new Diable 60 Tooth Blade (6.5 inch): amzn.to/3fpRmp4 . You would probably still be okay with a 40 tooth blade but I would stay away from using a 24 tooth blade. Best of luck on the project!
I had someone come out and install the countertop and he cut out the hole for the sink to big is there anything I can do to fix it? so I don't have to buy another countertop
I don't think so, is the countertop a standard length that doesn't have to be special ordered? If it is a standard length you can pick up at the home improvement store I would get a new one and start fresh. Sorry ☹️

Thank you very much for this tutorial. I have a counter top scheduled to arrive from Lowes next week. It's 8ft and I have to cut it to 68 inches🙄
You got this 👊
@@EverydayHomeRepairs I'll certainly let you know how it turns out.🔨
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Hi Again.
Hello,
What can I use you use to glue the back splash to the wall?
And the countertop to the cabinet?
Or only use the screws?
Find a caulk that best match the countertop or a clear one
Where did you find long build up strips? I can only find short pieces
Thank you
Thank you for a great video. I've browsed your other videos and subscribed because you have such a variety of things that are on my To Do List. Please keep up the good work.
This was great!!!
Won't the buildup strips raise the counter top bottom too high above the cabinet top? The front recess in the countertop is 1/2" and the strips are 3/4".
Just a tip, hold down lower on the router
I don't have a paper template to re-install a sink. Any pointers for me?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs pour epoxy is what I'm referring to.
I love the pattern of this counter! What brand and color?
Hi Dawn, I got these countertops from the instock supply at a home improvement store found here in the midwest called Menards. The company which makes the counters is called CustomCraft and the pattern is Silver Quartzite Laminate Countertop. www.menards.com/main/kitchen/countertops-laminate/all-countertops-laminate/customcraft-countertops-reg-laminate-countertop/94974feet/p-1561098548613.htm
@@EverydayHomeRepairs I just bought these at Menards. Then I was surffing youtube how to install them. I found this!

I do not know, specifically what material the C/T base is made of, at this time.
thanks mate
No prob, cheers 🍻
What kind of router bit you using ?
Can't laminate countertops just be glued down onto the cabinet with a silicone based adhesive or construction glue? Do I really need to use screws?
What abot vessel sink on laminate top?
Is it ok if the countertop sits higher then the range
How do you attach and secure the countertop? Glue?
I can't find the side splash on the website, even to order it. Thanks.
Hey Thomas, what home improvement store are you shopping at?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Menards.
I didn't see the end splash at the store. Are they special order?
The "side splash" is usually special order but the end cap is almost always in stock.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs End caps I got. I was going to buy the sheets but for not much more I got the hole countertop. The end caps cost me almost ast much as the counter. I needed 3 end caps. Once I get time I will try to install them.
Pro tip. Unless you are hanging drywall, don’t use drywall screws.
Why, you don't like splitting wood, stripped holes and rust spots?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Thanks
I had someone come out and install the countertop and he cut out the hole for the sink to big is there anything I can do to fix it? so I don't have to buy another countertop
I don't think so, is the countertop a standard length that doesn't have to be special ordered? If it is a standard length you can pick up at the home improvement store I would get a new one and start fresh. Sorry ☹️
did you get these at menards?
This is off topic. What is the song used at the end of the video.
What is the average cost of having this done by a professional? Thank you.
So you use a jigsaw?
WHy are you using the build up strips?
I used the strips so everything aligns with the old counter removed, especially the little breakfast bar edge to ensure no gaps.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs But wouldn't the tops screw back on the same way that they came off?
My question is can you cut the back splash?
Cut the backsplash off the countertop?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Yes! Cut the backsplash of countertops.
Is this Silver Quartzite countertop?
You know it 👊 I like that one especially for the price.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Menards was cheaper that home depot. I bought these countertops and was surfing youtube how to install them. I found this and said hey I bought these!
@@EverydayHomeRepairs I didn't see the end splash at the store. Are they special order?
Good job. Thank you. Except you forgot to smile a little
Go to the 16:00 mark if you want to know how to install (attach) the countertop.
This is a perfect HOW NOT TO DO IT video! Every countertop video he has made is wrong!!!
Hey Mark, I welcome any feedback. Which part(s) do you do differently that saves time, money, or results in a better install?
