I found all your videos are very helpful, i have subscribed your channel :)
I really like your explanation of the context filter using the top N example, nicely done!
One question: what if I turn all the filters into context filters, will that cause any problems?

    • @sqlbelle
      @sqlbelle  3 роки тому +2

Hello Sara, Thank you for your kind note.
Regarding the context filter, I would not necessarily recommend turning all the context filters on as it could also have a negative effect on performance. There are also times when you would want to have data (or calculations) not affected by the filters, for example in the case of FIXED LOD expressions.
      Hope this helps!
      Donabel

    Hi Donabel,
Although I was aware of the basic filter concepts in Tableau I learnt few NEW topics from this video
    1. Exact differences between Quick Filter and Standard Drag & Drop Filter
    2. How multiple filters behave? (Cascading filters)
    3. Significance of "All values" when a Continuous field is used in the Filters Shelf
    4. "Show Null Controls" option for a Continuous field Filter
    5. Latest date filter
    6. Browse Periods for continuous date filters
    Thanks for this excellent video.

Every time I watch one of your videos I learn just a little more. Especially when I perform an analysis in Tableau and a small feature appears that I ignore. Or maybe I wish Tableau had a special feature only to learn fom that it can do what I am asking. I find Tableau fascinating and frustrating but SQL Belle you make it easier. Thank you

Thank you James! I have those moments too where I wish Tableau was able to do something (or do something easier).. sometimes it's by accident or luck (or desperation) that I find out about features. Or, for some cases, I would have a workaround but the actual feature gets released in the next version. Overall I love working with the tool, and happy to hear you're finding the videos useful!

I teach my students how to use Tableau in data analysis. In times, when I had face-to-face contact with them in the classroom, it was easier to show them how Tableau works, how to create reports or dashboards. Nowadays, in pandemia time, they have to work more to achieve the same learning outcomes. Your videos are strong support for my students. You are a great teacher. I appreciate your engagement and efforts in preparation these videos to deliver the knowledge of how to use Tableau in practice. Thank you so much.

    • @sqlbelle

Thank you for such a kind note, Piotr. I teach Tableau in the classroom as well, and it's just different teaching it online and I had to re-think and re-imagine the best way I can support them. That's how this channel was born - I wanted to have a way for them to still access my lectures even after the "live" lecture was done. I am experimenting the reverse classroom right now, where students can come for the hands-on and troubleshooting and questions, but it's in the very early experimentation stages.
I am very happy to hear the videos can help support your students as well! Take care, and thank you for your kind words and support 🙏🙂

One of the very best videos explaining how filter works in Tableau!! 😍 One quick question though: at ~7:20 what if I want to show up only "top 10" customers no matter how you slice/ filter? If there's no state selected it's the top 10 for the whole national, if you select one state it's the top 10 for that state (and only 10, not the rest of all other customers). Thanks!

Just one question, regarding action and tooltip filters, where do they stand on the filters hierarchy? My best guess would be that they are a special kind of dimension filters?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @sqlbelle
      @sqlbelle  Рік тому +1

Thank you Anastasios. I *think* they are technically regular dimension filters. When there is an action filter, tooltip filter, regular dimension filter - we'll see that these are all independently applied (just like how regular dimension filters behave)

    Thanks for the awesome video.

Hello @cococnk388 - Tableau has a very specific feature called Context Filter. It would be one you can add/toggle when you right click on a field in the filter shelf, and select "Add to Context"

Thank you very much for the great video, I learned a lot!
I have a question that bothering me: Can I display sales for each year in different charts (example: Sales for 2018, Sales for 2019, Sales for 2020) but the same sheet by date filter?
I will appreciate to get some points from you, thanks again!

That's great to hear Qi! I am glad you found that helpful.
Yes there are ways to display them in different charts - a possibility could be a small multiple. Quickest way would be to just put your date in either Rows or Columns.
A more complicated way (but can be more organized) would be something like this trellis chart:

Amazing stuff! I learnt a lot from your video. Thank you so much! :) I’d like to seek your advice on one issue that I have with filters in a dashboard. I have two worksheets: Worksheet1: Columns: Type of stationeries and Rows: YYWW whereas Worksheet2: Columns: Type of stationeries and Rows: Department. Values are cost for both tables. As there are too many type of stationeries (say, 100 types), I filtered to 5 types in both worksheets. I use both worksheets in Dashboard. When I use Table 1 as a filter and select a week, it shows relevant costs of 5 types of stationeries for departments in Table 2. The issue is when I select the week again to show all weeks, all types of stationeries in Table 2 show up instead of 5 types. How can I fix the filter to 5 types of stationeries as per initially setup in worksheets. I could not find anywhere how to solve it. Appreciate much if you can advise! Appreciate much!

I am new to Tableau and have found your videos so helpful. Thank you. I have a dashboard showing kpi's and other information across the business that is linked to multiple datasets. I am trying to create a dashboard filter so that when I select a articular month for example, all the vizzes within the dashboard filter to that month only. Can this be achieved easily? I have tried a few different things but wasn't able to get the desired result.

    • @sqlbelle

Thank you for your comment Mindy, I am happy to hear you found it helpful.
Yes you are able to filter across different data sets, but may require a few different strategies depending on how you connected the data sources and how they're used in the dashboard.
      Here are some possibilities:
      1. Are they all different data sets (ie do you see multiple database (or cylinder) icons in your side bar and do they have the same field names? You may need to set up the data relationships for them before the filters may work. (I have this video focusing on blend, but covers this data relationship functionality: ua-cam.com/video/dC10teRrv-k/v-deo.html)
      2. Filter actions (instead of the native dimension filters) usually help "filter" across different data sources more easily
      3. There are cases where you may need to create parameters and calculated fields, and use those in your Filter shelf instead.
I think there's definitely possibility that what you are trying to accomplish is straightforward. However, I know the true answer is usually "it depends". Without seeing the data set and the dashboard, it may be hard to evaluate.
I hope some of these ideas are helpful.
      Donabel

@@sqlbelle thank you for your suggestions. I will look into these options further. The datasets all work independently to one another as one is finance related and then I have HR and Safety. The only common field is a date. I will experiment a little more. Thank you for your advice.

I agree with everyone, you are a great teacher. Your steps are clear and I am able to follow very easily. thank you. I'm working on a Tableau dashboard but I'm having issues with the filters. I'm hoping you can help me. My report has 7 sources from 7 different excel workbooks. I setup the sheets I needed and used relationship to connect them. they all have two things in common, a "Month" column and a "Associate" column. I have a chart representing the 7 sources. When I try to setup the filter in the dashboard and use it the first sheet in filter's correctly but the other don't for some reason. I set the filter to "All Using Related Data sources". I have been struggling for too long with this issue. Help

Hi, I am watching all your videos, they are very informative! Thank you for making them. Here is my question: can I apply a filter to the quick table calculation option? for example using your data, I have made a table with each row is the state, the column is the years (2000,2001,2002,2003 for instance), and measure names(include sum(sales), quick calculated compound growth rate using 2000 as the base) . Now I have a table(each row is state with each years sale number and CAGR), but my purpose is to get a table with sales by year by state and show only the CAGR of 2003 by state (using 2003 based on 2000 only). But by default Tableau will show CAGR for all the years, how can I hide the 2000, 2001 and 2002's CAGR column from the table but still keep the sales for these years? Should I use a filter or LOD expression? Please consider to make a video :D I've worked on this for a while still no clue. I kind of feel manipulating calculated variables are not so flexible compared even with Excel.

Thanks Xin! I think this is doable with a filter, but what you may be looking for is a late filter. I talked about this a little bit in the Table Calculations video - ua-cam.com/video/3_DeQdE25Bc/v-deo.html .. if you check the description, there should be chapters and there's one specific to late filtering. Hope this one helps!

@@sqlbelle Hi Donabel I watched the late filter part but I failed to use it. I think the problem is I need to apply year as the filter affecting CAGR only without affecting sum(sales). Since year is not a calculated variable, when I put it in the filters section, it will apply to both sales and CAGR . Did I miss anything? Thanks for your help!

Hi mam, which tableau file will be small, one which is using Extract filter or one which is using Data source filter ? (Note: These are two different files)

  • @meshell7987

Does it mean that we should use the extract filter only when we create an extract, and when we have a live connection we should use the data source filter only? If we have an extract and can we use the data source filter? Or can we use first extract filer, then data source filter ( is there any logic in such action??)

    • @sqlbelle
      @sqlbelle  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Sandeep,
Extracts are proprietary files that Tableau can generate based on your data (or a subset of your data). Extracts are optimized, and often used for performance or portability.
One of Tableau Public's limitation is it doesn't allow you to save your files locally, and the extract file is primarily a local file.
      Hope this helps.
