01:13 best part by far
Gotta be the best fill in music ever. It’s so simple but it’s just incredible.
Agreed 100% 🤙
I would say 3:16! So cool! :)
Yes it's cool but it's "just" a bridge to the chorus, for me the best part is the flute which could be considered a flute solo? But then again it's my opinion
@3:17 is the best LOL
This song is constant 16th notes throughout, props to you from a fellow drummer!
Yeah man , good exercise for the right hand
Colm Dowling I exersise my right hand on the hi hat and on my dick lmao
King Troll you're so cool! Glad to know that you're a drummer too! Newbie here.
KingToll Levitate is a real challenge with your right hand that’s why I play it with two hands
Jeff Porcaro was the King of 16th notes. Very challenging indeed!
I'm obsessed with your covers man
Hey Char. How are u doin hun? I have done some covers and hopefully you will like my versions.
the tom's sounds are awesome
morb124 That’s because they are tuned correctly
I believe those are Evans Ec2’s
Mine sounds the same
Totally..those sound amazing..
Honestly
Forearms must be finished after that
I said id mix it up a bit and cover some Toto. Such a great groove orchestrated by Jeff Pocaro in this track. I was watching different Live videos of him playing it and one fill he did really caught my ear. I tried to replicate it @3:15 in the video just before the final chorus. Also I've started uploading old unseen videos on my Facebook page that haven't been seen on youtube due to their copyright laws. I've recently uploaded Zero by the smashing pumpkins and plan to upload a Jimi Hendrix Video next. Heres the Link to my page , Cheers , Colm facebook.com/ColmDowlingDrums/
That fill was dope mate!
It's one of my favorite fills, he did really caught my ear too. When I watched that video for the first time I listened to that part about a million times
Totally agree! Very hard to play exactly in time...
colm, great job adding some "pep" to that``your confidence is very good! fun to watch!
Cheers pal
GONNA TAKE A LOT TO DRAG ME AWAAAAYYY FROM YOOOOOOU, THERE'S NOTHIN THAT A HUNDRED MEN OR MOOOORE COULD EVER DOOOOOO, I BLESS THE RAAAINS DOWN IN AAAAAAFRICAAAAAAAAA, GONNA TAKE SOME TIME TO DO THE THINGS WE NEVER HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD
Bird Brain Mafia same man, same
Its not even correct lyrics but ok...
You have gone insane... 🤣
Ganos Thenie What are you on about, yes it is, that’s the correct lyrics
⁰
Best cover of Africa I've ever seen. And you added Jeff's favorite fill in at 3:17. That was fantastic, too.
Love the 3rd of the 16th on the bell. Well done holding 16ths at a perfect dynamic for the whole song. The triplet fills are spot on after the keyboard solo, just as Jeff did them.
Figa che 🐓 gallo
I love this song, it's absolutely flawless, the ambience makes me feel like I'm in Africa myself, specially on the flute part, I just close my eyes and imagine a better world for everyone
Who else blesses the rains down in Africa?
Who wouldn’t?
Runbobrun I bless the rains not in Africa
Black Toof 🅰️IDS AND E🅱️🅾️L🅰️
Me blyat
EY IM STUDYING AFRICA RN IN SCHOOL!!!
Trying to practice this song. Those 16ths are such pain. 😂
Thats Jeff Porcaro for you 😅
No they arent
Jeff put subtle accents on the 16ths on the hats.
If you listen to the recording then you will realise that there is a quarter note foot hi hat pattern not sixteenth notes on the hi hat along with a quarter note floor tom, it's a shaker and maracas giving the illusion of sixteenth notes on the hi hats, although the great Jeff Porcaro (RIP) played sixteenth notes on the hi hat live but the recording has a lot of percussion on it played Jeff Porcaro, Joe Porcaro and Lenny Castro
I stand corrected about the quarter notes on the floor tom and the djembe, Jeff Porcaro played a unique 1, 2, the ah of 2, 3, 4 on his Cowbell which was matched by Lenny Castro on his congas with quarter note shekere and the 16th note shaker pattern
Watched that last fill over and over again. Great cover Colm!
Cheers man
Same!
What a bloody brilliant tune. Superb video. I'd love to hear Rosanna too
I support this
Thanks Patrick , Ill try to get around to Rosanna at some stage ;)
After these I'm sure you could end up covering rosanna (Probably in a perfect way), I've tried that a lot of times but I can't xD, it's very diffcult but im sure you can
You must be from Britain
3:09 I see what you NEARLY did there :D
The snair sound is amazing
@Justin Long i dont like the snare sound, sound dead
Great job. Jeff Porcaro was one of the most talented drummers ever yet was grossly undervalued IMHO. His beats are very complex and one has to really listen carefully to hear all of the different notes and sound nodes. Rosanna is another one that requires true diligence.
I love the suppressed sound of the snare.
very much so !!!!
Honestly one of the best covers I have heard, keep em comin!
Can't stop listening over and over again!
Cheers man.
Never heard a better, more powerful drum cover of this beautiful song, very nice.
Damn... You hold your groove perfectly, and you don't overplay. Perfect
Thanks Madeline.
@@ColmDowling Seriously. You've got the best drum covers!
It would be really sick if you did 'my number' by foals cheers
Im only 12 and iv been learning drums for a year now and im all ready grade 4(because grade 1 and 2 i learnt in a klick of a finger) people say im a fast learner. But with an hour to spare i finally learnt this song for my friend.16th notes, fills, drags and all. Cant wate to get back to school to show my friend.
Totally wonderful drum cover,Colm!!!! :D
Started doing this with my band last week ... swung by to get some sneaky pointers that i will claim for myself .... you are the Man !!!
This is what decent drumming is all about:
Good Sound, most solid time keeping, reduced and taken back interpretation, awesome and sophisticated wows in the ending part. I am jealous
Holding the 16ths on the hats and that kick that doubles the snare. Just as Jeff played it. Well done man.
The mind goes somewhere incredible when your behind a kit. Nothing is wrong in the universe and your full of growth and contentment. What a beautiful thing music can do for your soul. Primitive. Full. Nothing but growth.
From a drummer (58 now, playing since birth) to a drummer Great chops. Time is spot on. I see some Moeller technique there. Keep going and listen to everyone that has ever sat behind a kit and lit up the stage. That's what we do. Carry the torch and focus on your left hand. Play opposite. Its not easy but focus.
You played the hell out of those drums mate! Incredible!
Drums sound amazing along with your playing. How the hell did this get any thumbs down?...mind boggling. Subscribed! Awesome job!!
Watch the way Simon Phillips plays this song. Not straight 16ths at all. It is a samba that is played with grace with dynamics between the verses and choruses not slamming the beat.
man your timing is impeccable, when someone plays like that it brings a smile to my face, perfect dude, cant say enough
I've watched this video over and over.... Amazing to see amazing drumming and editing! Music and drums at a perfect volume!! Cheers Colm!
You are my favourite drummer on UA-cam your covers are so good, your drum kit sounds fantastic and you can see that your enjoying it
Cheers James
804 people are jealous of your mad drumming skills bro
You are a great Drummer and I love to listen to your cover. You Play the Little Details perfect.
Cheers Roy
Fantastic use of different tuning s to play a bongo part and a kit part simultaneously. Great cover!
Nice choice to play Colm. Congrats
This dude killed it! Parents used to listen to this song when I was a kid. Brought back memories!!
if you don't end up making a living out of drumming, I'll eat my own shoe.
Ping Pong Il he'd go far if he joined a band
only if they were as bitchin as him
North Koreans already eat their own shoes cuz of the bad poverty😂
love the rhythm and beat to this song, never gets old
One of my favourite songs sounds even better watching this . Nice video cover
3:17 goddamn awesome
I know right! I’m twelve and have been drumming since I was 9, but I can’t wait till I get enough experience and skill to be able to play like that (:
@@limebackwards160 I have to admit that's a great fill and it sounds extremely skillful but it's not as hard as you think. It's just triplets:
snare, H tom, L tom, L tom, L tom, bass drum (all this repeated twice) plus the regular fill he did at 1:13. It's quite easy after a few minutes of practice. But apart from that you're right, it's sick!
It's a Triplet... Used a lot by Bonham, close Porcaro friend BTW.
Ik only 12 and iv been playing drums for a year and im all ready a grade 4. People say im a fast learner. But with a little practice and an hour to spare i finally learnt that hole song off by heart (with ths fill and the 16th nots with the right hand). The drags were awesome thou. Cant wate to show my drum teach
I’m in love with the sound of that kit
One of my favourite Toto tracks, perfect drumming, really good 👍
Great Job! I really like the sound of the Birch shells with the clear no dot heads. Well done.
Cheers.
Nice snare sound👍🤘
Dude... What a groove! Amazing work! Congratulations from Brazil brother! Deus abençoe teu talento! Which means, God bless your talent!
Love when you switch over to the ride and hit the bell. Such a great sound
Love this.. that slight crash on your right hand cymbal is sweet. It's like the drumming equivalent of turbo whistle just at the right moment 👊
100% the best drum cover of this song on UA-cam
I'm actually learning this song in my band class. This helped me out a lot, thank you!
Glad it helps Gavin
One of the best drum covers I’ve heard
I really love your drums 😍

nice bro. great song
Beautiful man! :D. I'm liking what you did with the camera angles on this one as well!! :)
Cheers matt , Yeah i tried to give a few different angles to capture different aspects of the playing.
Brilliant work!
Thanks Mike
Jesus this lad has groove and swing and feel. Brilliant.

Awesome cover! You are a great drummer, one prime example is your variety of styles. You got pure hard rock and metal covers played great yet you can play more soft and laid back songs like this with good groove!
Thanks for your kind words Nils, Cheers.

The best drum cover of Africa

3:17
I love this part :3
jeff did that part live in the late 80's and early 90s
A very nice style change for the song- the drums gave this song a new feeling that is very nice
Those A customs sound so beautiful 😍
These drums sound amazing.
y'all this was my first favorite song! :)
i remember in intro to german in middle school, i had my backpack on my desk and i had my head down listening to this on my headphones full blast. started "accidentally" singing along to the chorus and someone got my attention and hushed me lol good times
