One of the items I never travel without is a small towel. I got the idea from the book "Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and boy, has the towel saved me nearly as many times as people in the book! When you get soaked in the rain, you have something to dry off on. When a car splashes you with puddle water, you can clean up your clothes. When you manage to get some ice cream on your shirt, you can soak the corner of the towel with water from your water bottle and clean yourself up. When a public toilet has no paper to dry your hands with, out comes the towel. Etc etc.
Dear Eileen and fellow viewers: please be aware that a suitcase of this size is no longer considered a carry on on many European flights. Many airlines, especially budget ones, measure your suitcase, and you may well be forced to check it in, even if you do not want to. Please check with your airline before departure, because they keep changing the rules. We learned this the hard way;). Thanks for the video Eileen, and happy travels everyone!
Thank you for the kind reminder! I flew etihad this time and they were ok with this particular suitcase as a carry-on. I’d definitely make sure to check if I travel to the US xx
Hope you had a wonderful trip! We've done several vacations with only carry on bags and it is such a game changer. No more waiting for luggage to come down to the carousel, dealing with everyone else waiting, all of it. And no worries about if your bag made it on the right flight! It is such a great feeling to get off the plane and walk right out.
This video was so timely for me as I am traveling to NYC next week to visit my daughter and grandkids. I too, am traveling with a carry-on. The one item I am adding is the Shout-Out Wipe n' Go stain removers. They work so well. Last November, I purchased the packing cubes and they are so useful. Looking forward to seeing your upcoming Vlog on your trip to Malaysia. Enjoy your trip.
it makes sense. some ppl bring 10 pairs of Branded shoes and bags in their holiday. I would worry their safety. it should be carefree in holiday and I will bring something simple and comfortable
Yes, and sanitizing wipes are better than a bottle of sanitising gel as you can also use them to clean the table and belt buckle 👍 I use them sparingly though as it is not the best choice environmentally.
I’m new to the term “luxury minimalist”. I like it. When you pulled the first item out of your backpack I thought “that looks like my hat”! I like your style. Hope you enjoyed your time in Malaysia. 🌺 Heidi
I hope you had a lovely holiday in Malaysia Eileen; I think I have mentioned before that I have been there twice and loved it. I found the people to be exceptionally friendly and welcoming. I hope to visit again sometime!
Great video! I'm trying to only pack in carry on these days, which is a true challenge for me as I'm a long time "over packer"!! I love your sun hat! It's cute and packable!!
You can use cards to pay almost everywhere in Malaysia, especially KL. I don’t carry cash at all either. But it’s always good practice to keep RM10 notes on hand if you’re travelling and you’re not sure where you’ll end up at.
Hi Eileen Welcome back to Malaysia. If I am not wrong, you grew up in Kuching. By the way we go cashless here at almost every where except for eateries that are traditional hawkers. Enjoy your vacation Eileen. You can still have some durians during your trip.
Love your hat Eileen. I have similar one as well and I get a lot of use. Practical ideas for traveling minimally. Thank you for sharing your traveling tips. Enjoy your trip and be safe.
I like bringing aets of neutrals. My favorites for a cooler than normal week in Pennsylvania in late June- corrin- linen blend elastic waisted pants and cotron t-shirts rgat matched from the Gap. I had a black set and an olive set. Also brought a long dark olive cotton cardigan and some other t-shirts.
I definitely don't pack carry-on unless there is a space limitation (car boot, small plane). This is not what I would pack for SE Asia having lived many years of my life there. I would never wear shorts except for the beach or exercise. I tend to dress more conservatively and also get a bit more dressed up in cities. So this is interesting to me. Did you go out to dinner or walk around big cities in shorts?
Thanks for sharing! I actually did a follow up video after this one saying I wished I brought more dresses for the trip. But I did wear shorts a fair but seeing we did a lot of family activities xx
And for those in the US, I'm still partial to the JCPenny's 'St. John's Bay' 100% cotton t-shirts in a variety of colors. I usually get one each crew & v-neck in white so they go with everything & like everything else, as long as you take care of them, they'll last a really long time. I also like & have some black items but we have two kitties so black for us is black with kitty hair ;)
Hello Eileen Greetings from Australia 🎉🎉 I commented on the wrong video earlier. Wondering what size is your Grana Pj as I too would like an oversized fit I am larger than you so wanted an idea. Thank you kindly xx
You can surely use card and app to pay, as a Malaysian I hardly ever use any cash here 😁 even the hawker stall use QRPay or bank transfer, even if they don’t provide that option I always ask first if they can provide their account number. Usually on the suburb or village they don’t display but you can ask them, and sometimes its great introduction for them to start using that option. Ps: not sure how QRPay or bank transfer works for from foreign to local account, maybe there’ll be a buffer time around 3 days, am not sure.
I was so pleasantly surprised! Certain Apps apparently had to be connected to a Malaysian bank account to work, but we used very little cash seeing there are so many other options to pay with xx
Great video! I’d love to see what you wore on the plane and how you got through security with your gels and liquids? Did you decant them before flying? Hope you had the most wonderful holiday with your family 😊
Yes, I was about to ask the same thing. The toiletries shown seem to be a tad over what would fit in the pouch that is usually used unless this has changed recently. I decant mine but find that I can only fit perhaps a week’s worth of skincare (my skin is sensitive so this is my priority) and I buy the rest at the airport or destination. It’s also a bit of a hassle to pull out all the liquids from various pouches for security scanning so what I do is to keep them together in the transparent pouch first and reorganise them into their respective bags/pouches once through security. Some scanners and security personnel are also very particular in a few airports and they require everything to be readily visible when placed on trays. While some airports are more efficient and everything is just placed inside the carryon - laptops, gadgets, liquids and gels - and it’s all good for scanning. These are very few though.
My question is about your liquids. In America we are limited to a quart sized bag and 3 ounces per product (unless that has changed?). I assumed this was global.
Hi Jennifer, as we travelled as a family, all 3 of us shared a big luggage but I did bring this suitcase as a carry-on to carry my on board essentials. This video is really to showcase how everything I brought could fit into a small carry-on xx
Nice videos! Eileen ❤ I could never fit my stuffs in a carry-on luggages. Can’t even do it for a trip for 3 days. I really need to learn to downsize my travelling luggages. I think your suggestions for neutral coloured clothes would help. How do you take care of your hair styling on trip? I need to bring my hair dryer when staying at hotel. Those at hotels are terrible. They can ruin my hair in one blow dry.
I didn’t bring a hair dryer this time, but otherwise my routine was similar to the usual- shampoo, conditioner, leave-in serum, blow dry, and maybe straightening xx
Golly, I could never pack that light, especially for Malaysia. I am genetically incapable of packing light and I like to have my large suitcase at least 1/3 empty because the shopping in Malaysia is absolutely awesome.
I@@ColourfulNoir i use it more for tea. I put my fave loose leaves into draw string baggies to travel with me. Green tea with ginseng slices is really good pick me up in the morning:)
I admire how you have packed so light, but I’m assuming you can do that because you can borrow clothing from your sister when you are there?, I personally would’ve added maybe some linen trousers and a linen shirt . I personally would not be able to pack that light but I do try and pack with just hand luggage for trips. ❤
I'm living in Malaysia and most Malaysians have moved to cashless payment for almost a decade ago. There are plenty of options of cashless payment in Malaysia.
Thank you for this wonderful video Eileen. I clicked on the links for the sun hat and crossbody bag but both said “this item cannot be found”. I googled Uniqlo and found Round Mini Shoulder Bag $19.99. Is this the same bag you mentioned in the video? I’ll be traveling to Thailand soon and in need of these items desperately. Thank you.

Even a flannel can be useful, which is really just a very very small towel!! Remember to put it in a plastic bag for when it gets wet 😊
@@sarahr6089 True! Before I got my designated travel towel I carried a face towel with me.
