    Mines painted the same color green as yours is. Except for my overhead is a light cream as is my bulkheads and the haul, which were all painted by the last owner. He too replaced all the plywood. Nice job! The boat was pretty ugly inside as I understand it. He, (Ian) was 17 years old when he bought this boat. A year and a half later is when I bought it from him. I'm enjoying the fruit of his labor. Hats off to the kid. "Thanks Ian. Good job." Now for a cup of joe...

    Hi regards bulkheads, there needs to be a 1/4 inch gap around the bonding edge on any bulkhead to a fibreglass hull
    the reason this is done is not to create a hard spot .hard spots cause the outer hull she'll to crack over time .
    Hope this helps guys

    I'm looking forward in seeing the finished project. I can only imagine how much your looking forward in having it done. If you had to do the boat purchase over again would you go into a larger vessel?

    • @Cruisinglealea
      @Cruisinglealea  8 років тому +1

      We could buy a larger boat if we wanted one. We have had that discussion several times (We go to boat shows too). For us, however, there is no compelling reason to go to a larger vessel and many reasons to keep what we have. From our perspective, the only advantage to a larger vessel is increased potential speed. Some things that others may see as an advantage, like accommodations for guests or increased storage space for more stuff, are negatives for us. The increased cost of purchasing, commissioning, maintaining and mooring a larger vessel far outweigh the only advantage that we see, and the limitations of a deeper draft, heavier vessel are strong negatives. One foot deeper draft and we would not be able to enter our favorite harbor in Hawaii, for example.

      +Cruising Lealea That makes a lot of sense. Maybe you could touch on your upcoming destinations some in upcoming videos. I've enjoyed all that you have put up here on UA-cam. Thanks guys!

    I miss our Albin Vega, a very well built boat. Brings back memories for sure. I believe we had the Volvo MD-6A ??? With the variable pitch prop. I eventually went with a Yanmar and fixed blade prop, too many problems with the original engine and prop.
    We were members of VODCA the owners club for that boat, I'm wondering if their still around?
    Best of luck

      VODCA (Vega One Design Chesapeake Assn.) became the American Vega Association shortly before Chuck took over the Newsletter from Sid Rosen in 2001. The internet and Yahoo discussion groups made the paper newsletter obsolete and VODCA had expanded from the Chesapeake Bay area with members all over the USA and around the world. The last paper newsletter was published by Chuck in the spring of 2007 (Link to complete newsletter archive - americanvega.org/membership/newsletterarchive.html). The website, AmericanVega.org, is still active, managed by Chuck, as is the Yahoo discussion group. Almost everything Sid published in his newsletters, as well as the VORM, plus everything Chuck and other members have contributed going back to the nineteen eighties has been published and archived there. The Pacific Northwest VEGAtarians still hold an annual Rendezvous. This year it was in Nanaimo.

      Cruising Lealea Thanks for the info on VODCA...I'm glad it's still around in one way of another. Their newsletters and documents where very helpful when working on our Vega.
      Best of luck.

    Now that the bulkhead is going to be fitted farther back, can you not move the water tank back to it when it is in place, leaving space for the elbow on the fill line?

    Did you paint UNDER the engine , and service it well before you put in all the wood again ?As it is easy with air all around ,,, Just a thought ,, Just did a Marathon watch of all your refit vids ,, Thanks for showing all you have done.

      The engine bed is easily accessible even with the furniture in place, but we have only just begun to reassemble everything. We winterized the engine before we began the project.

    I once worked for a company making armored vehicles. Very carefully designed using computer graphics. Trouble was they joined the parts on the wrong edges. Made welding extremely difficult. It was always blamed on poor quality of the plasma cutting. They found it quickly when they started laser cutting the parts. They made close to a thousand the hard way.

    When you get get fed up with sanding or painting, while your doing it, plan your leaving and heading out to sea, where to go, where to anchor, plan your next trip.

    I think I understand how you used your scribe tool, but not totally sure. I think you used a pencil with that block of wood. I would have been great if you actually showed us using it...

    • @Cruisinglealea
      @Cruisinglealea  8 років тому

      Any small piece of scrap will work. You just need to be able to place the marker the same distance from the edge of the tool every time. A short piece of lath with a notch for the marker. will work for most applications. This little piece I used here has an "L" shaped edge that allows you to transfer the line from the plywood to the new material beneath it while keeping the tool level with the flat surface.

    • @TerrydeAlaska
      @TerrydeAlaska 8 років тому

      I guess you could also use a compass set to say one inch and then draw a line around the old bulkhead and then you will know your new bulkhead will be one larger..is that what you did with your short piece of lath?

    • @Cruisinglealea
      @Cruisinglealea  8 років тому +3

      No. You need to get an accurate tracing of the curvature of the hull. A fixed measurement from the edge of the old piece won't work because the curve changes slightly as you move aft. Some places it was more than an inch different, other places on the curve the distance was less than 1/8 of an inch. The line you make with the tool follows the curve of the hull exactly so when you place the old piece on the pattern material and line the tool up with the marks you have made you can place your marker on the other end of the tool and, following the line on the original piece, you can trace the hull shape on the new pattern material. The "L" shape on the edge of this tool lets you keep the tool flat on the old piece so you get a more accurate tracing. I will try to upload something that shows it more clearly.

    You can make a custom fit hose via automotive services. Now, the question is, is the price right? Well, i don't know. This will have to be your decision.
    The idea is you find such a business in your area (preferably) and you give 'em a call, they send a tech who takes measurements. Those measurements are then reproduced on a steel mandrill and from there, they begin wrapping it with rubber strips (much like you'd make a tire) and various other layers.
    The end result is then pushed off the mandrill and put inside an oven to cure.
    It's certainly a lot better than any other hose you'll ever buy, mainly because it is custom fit, but also because you can specify its purpose, that means not only do they make it to suit your needs in terms of elasticity or durability, but, they can put the right compound for the right job. It's the proper way, really.

      Remember, we are on an island in Southeast Alaska with a population of about 2500 souls. Certain goods and services that folks in the lower 48 take for granted are simply not available here.

    Wth!? I wanted to hear what he had to say with regards to the reasoning of the OEM mistake of the BH and they totally cut it out with music just as he starts to talk!! So annoying as I just purchased the same yacht which needs refitting aswell....uggggh!

      Yeah, that was a bad edit. I should have just cut it shorter. In the raw footage, I was just repeating what I had said earlier about the size of the water tank and the pre-fabricated bulkhead. Those comments begin at 11:45 in the video and run to 12:45. If you have any question or other comments feel free to contact us.
