So, fun fact about John Carpenter (The character): In one of the chapters of the manga that didn't get adapted in the OVA we meet another member of his race, famous movie director John Landis. Through Landis we find out that Carpenter used to be a movie director but he never achieved the level of success his friend Landis did because the only movies he directed were weird horror films, so he retired to manage a movie theatre instead. So not only is Carpenter a reference to he Thing, he's heavily implied to be John Carpenter, the real life guy who directed that film and a bunch of other cult classic horror films.
Which itself was a reference to the classic novel Swiss Family Robinson, which has been adapted into a live action Disney movie, a Disneyland walkthrough attraction, and a season of World Masterpiece Theater.
@otaking3582 lol thank you I know literature is basically dead now with most people but I would like to think people are partially aware of Swiss family Robinson. The number of adaptations of it is insane.
Nice to see Fred Patten being mentioned as well as the C/FO. Fred was a friend, and I was a member of several C/FO chapters. I remember this Anime, thanks for a great video spotlighting it. It deserves to see new fans
This is an anime I'm really surprised nobody has ever considered making a movie out of. The premise alone feels like something Disney Channel would have been all over twenty years ago (in a good way).
I've noticed patterns children (and adults) in anime: - Ages 1-7: So adorable! Must protect at all costs! - Ages 8-10: So annoying! Get it offscreen now! - Ages 11-13: lol they think they understand the world but they totally don't. - Ages 14-17: Probably the main character. - Ages 18-24: Probably the mentor character that can still be a love interest. - Ages 25-35: Biseinen/bijosei, and smart too! Best character, but not the main character. - Ages 36-64: Probably an NPC. - Ages 65+: Dies in act 1.
Honestly for those who wish there was more to the OVA I can highly recommend the Manga, the whole thing's been translated to English over at Octionic Translations Compared to the OVA it's a lot punchier and a lot of the gags (especially early on) are genuinely very funny There's also several stories that are just Asari paying homage to games he likes, even drawing Belka and Laika as Felicia and Morrigan from Darkstalkers in a much later issue! Actually, Laika doesn't show up in the OVA at all! Fuckin' Shovel Mouse (that's his actual name) gets to show up but not her! What's up with that, she's the best character. C'mon.
I forget exactly who it was that I saw review this on UA-cam (more than likely Kenny Lauderdale). But as soon as I finished watching that review and they said it was uploaded on UA-cam, I knew I had to watch this Anime. It was such a cute story.
I served on the CVN-70, back in the early aughts. Warner-Robins, GA has a street named after the guy. What a great and quirky use of an otherwise mundane and generally unknown name outside of the Peach state.
Im surprised how quuckly i became bored with Spy x Family. Seemed like such a strong premise but ultimately it was just the same set of jokes over snd over again.
I can say with certainty that you are wrong. It's far better and more varied and interesting than you're making it sound, which tells me you didn't watch it for longer than 5 episodes. Go watch it again. It's not just the same tired joke over and over again. This isn't One Punch Man.
@j.2512 dude anime drawn by hand is so much better it's not even funny. 80s and 90s anime just look SO GOOD. thank God there's so many old anime that I don't have to worry about being stuck with new stuff. It will take me literal years of 24 hour days of watching to run out.
🐺Carpenter mentioned -> video validated. Sometimes I wonder what my days would be like if I became infatuated with normal fictional characters instead of a secondary character from some obscure OVA I haven't actually watched (who is directly based on a movie that repels me every time someone clips it [did you know this is not the first time KB has posted _The Thing_ on main?])
I have nothing useful to add to this comment except my admiration for keeping it so real and honest. Turning an alien morph-mobster wolf from an obscure 80's OVA into your favorite is hella weird, but I can't think of anything more "real anime-fan" than encountering some all but completely unknown small side-character and somehow making that into your soulmate.
Saw this one a few years ago, I'm sure it was because of Kenny's video too. Really charming, had a good time with it, I really shoud get back to finish reading the manga.
I have a weird history with this anime (without watching it). As I was trying to unravel the mystery source of the dancing otter with fish GIF, the answer I would always get would be "Space Family Carlvinson". It was not the source btw.
I watched this a couple months ago maybe a year now and was absolutely delighted by it. Just a really fun adorable ova. For some reason i feel like i found it from you but with you just now talking about it maybe not. Probably saw it on recommended anime on MAL from some other obscure OVA (always a good way to find obscure anime) either way its so fun and lovely. I really liked this one thanks for talking about it!
I picked this up after seeing the video mr Lauderdale did on the OVA. Very cute and chill, very 80s. I didn't love it though, all the various references just thrown together in one fuzzy pile on nonsense. But it really shouldn't be as obscure as it is.
I love this show, I was so happy to find a Corona figure kit. Funny how they don’t know earth school customs but know adult behavior and confuse them…😂
Every single alien-design here is better than the precedind one, and I consider it a grave offense against me personally that an entire show of little scrunkly comfort character aliens existand raise a cute child and nobody told me until now. A reboot, can't we use such bad habits to put SOME good in the world and reboot this one?
Ta-kun has got to be based off of the monsters from a B movie I can't remember the name to. I can't remember the name of that movie, but I'm sure someone will know.
Great video! Would you ever do a review of Single Apartment Dokudamisou (aka Dokudami Tenement)? It’s an ecchi comedy ova from the 80s based on a manga. It might be fun to cover.
Wait, isn't this from Mangaka "Asari Yoshitoo"? Now I'm sad this got an Anime and "Sengoku Kikoden Kunitori" (2 volumes of a great premise and visuals) isn't even known by most people..
MUTSUMI INOMATA!! Thank you for sharing that tribute to her. Anime owes her MUCH!
The brain guy looks influenced by the creatures in the pretty bloody 1950s monster movie "the fiend without a face".
Thank you for bringing to light so many old and forgotten anime

So in this universe "The Thing" was an autobiography!
The Title at least seems to be a pun on Space Family Robinson a comic book series that was later turned into the TV show Lost in Space
Ironically enough, the title the Japanese dub of "Lost in Space" is literally just "Space Family Robinson".
@@otaking3582 I was about to say.
I'd love to see you review another 80s wholesome space found family anime- Round Vernian Vifam

Didn't Kenny Lauderdale make a video about this a few years ago?
Exactly
It's even on his channel
I take they are using Fist Of The North Star voice actor and sound effects.
This anime is peak wholesomeness

I remember that Randall Stuckey name back in 93 and 94, saying that he was the guy that spread those BS rumors on American animated TV show Exosquad.
*Sad opening, wholesome OVA*
5:30 Wow, so much nostalgia packed into a single ad. Otherwise... yeah. Cute anime. Not much to say about it.
Space Family Carl Winslow
Her adoptive father is Optimus Prime, what a lucky girl.
