    Fantastic box! Visually, it’s an attractive piece, but the practical set up is truly appealing. Hope you’ve been enjoying your time. Nice to have a project. Looking forward to seeing the base as well!

    I did something similar about 8 months ago. Having access to the pens and seeing them frequently has put a stop on my desire to keep buying new pens. I actually enjoy them more now.

      I had that feeling too. With the pens in zippered cases, I don't see them. This is a better solution. I'd like to continue fixing pens, but at a slower rate, and maybe more focus on the ones I have. During the current pandemic, I'm not buying online, pens or otherwise (stuff already ordered like this case and its incoming base obviously doesn't count). More time to enjoy what I already have.

      @@WaskiSquirrel I used acrylic storage containers with drawers from MUJI. They have various sizes, (2 or 5 drawer) and are stackable. I lined them with pen trays like yours. They are transparent, so great for showcasing the pens. See here www.muji.us/store/furniture-interior/storage-organizers/acrylic-storage.html

    Books or a book-case or even two is a perfect thing to find in a bedroom of a civilized man. In mine I have five bookshelves. They are filled with books I probably will never read, but some have pretty covers. My loft bedroom is not large, but large enough to contain those shelves, books as well as the following: 6 leather or aligator suitcases filled with flags, 3 large boxes filled with Lincoln Logs, 2 suitcases filled with shoes...and I don't even have the shoe fetish thing. Large boxes of white styrofoam and vinyl for more "hats" I make. Various other art supplies in various containers which include two dozen little stuffed white bunny rabbits). A folding wooden wheelchair, a rocking chair, a sedan chair, piano stool, ottoman, 3 folded folding divider screens and 2 portable enbalming tables. If there is a partridge in a pear tree I wouldn't be surprised.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  4 роки тому

      Absolutely! I'm always sad when I visit a house with no books.
      My bedroom is actually made up of what was 2 bedrooms until the previous owner of the house decided to remove a wall. It's larger than it needs to be. I think if I bought free-standing furniture, I could fit in one more bookshelf. If my fantasy of built-in furniture ever comes true, well, fantasy house is filled with bookshelves!
      Meanwhile, I find empty space relaxing and comforting. That may be why a left-winger like me ended up in North Dakota: I just love the openness of the prairie. Clutter makes me crazy, but also paralyzes me. As you may have guessed from the pen organization part of the video, I struggle to do things unless I can do them right.

    I have used vintage machinist chests in the past as well. The flaw I found with that type of storage is the need to flop down the front cover to get access to the drawers. One extra step isn’t a huge hurdle, but my need for instant gratification is too strong. The vertical positioning the pens is the better option. If I know I want to write with the yellow Parker, I need not pull the drawer out completely, just enough to see it and grab it.
    I have a number of things I use for my pen storage. Mostly repurposed....watch strap storage case, coin collection case, etc. I’ll upload a video soon.
    Good luck in deciding how you organize them. The “Pier Gustafson” way for the pens I use at my drawing and calligraphy desk are done by nib type. Other rules of display can be found in different areas. My brain needs to remember how one particular pen is “organized”. It could be with its siblings by manufacturer....that is where most are found. You’ll need to watch the video to discover the other locations!

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  4 роки тому

      I started to watch your video until the internet went down. Now that it's back, I'll finish my comments and watch your video.
      I don't see the cover as particularly necessary for this case. I'd be happy if it weren't there. But I do get the practical reason for it: keeping the drawers from falling out when the cabinet is moved. And, yes, vertical storage proved to make more sense. I can't do it in the removable piece, but that piece is on top, so I can see it all anyway. Haven't quite figured out what is going in there, however.
      Your rules for organization make sense for you. I like them by brand because of my large number of pens from obscure manufacturers from behind the Iron Curtain. And I have heard of people organizing their pens by color of the finish. Whatever works with the collector's mind is what matters.

    I was planning to downsize my collection. However, with one of these, I could actually increase the number of pens, and not feel guilty.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  4 роки тому +2

      Another commenter made a good point about this: he said storing the pens openly and accessibly in here may actually make me less acquisitional. The idea of downsizing has crossed my mind: I picture a collection of 10 treasured pens and enough ink bottles to have a little variety. But this is where I'm at now.
      I'm not ordering online, except necessities, during this time. I have a few things, including the base to this case, that were ordered before the pandemic, but I'm trying to otherwise limit the possible entry of the virus into my home. It will be a good opportunity to build new habits.

    We had similar ideas. When I learned I would be teleworking for a while, I wanted to clear my pens out of my locking desk at work and bring them home, so I ran out and got a very similar 8-drawer chest from Harbor Freight. I'm glad I did it on the previous paycheck when stores were open. I ended up using Go Pens trays, and some of my last Pendora pen trays (they had nice large slots which were wider than the Go Pens ones, but sadly appear to be out of business now). I ended up choosing the same tray layout, and made some similar measuring errors on one drawer too. Also, some great choices on that book shelf; a Bacigalupi fan, I see.

It would be interesting to see if they're manufactured in the same place and just rebranded. I do like the way closing the lid locks the drawer cover panel in place (mine has a separate lock). Oh, you are a one! We've been in your bedroom before - you showed us your books, I believe.
    Great pen storage, and pretty enough to be furniture - the Harbour Freight version is a lot more industrial if I remember correctly - nothing wrong with that (it can be a Look), but wood is more domestic looking. Your layout looks great in there too. I'm just a bit concerned because, although seeing the number of pens you already have scares you, there's going to be a LOT more room in the base for EVEN MORE pens! ... and What are you Going to Do with the pen cases now? [First World Problems]
    Perhaps your next project needs to be Ink Storage to a similar standard. I feel that the grrreat benefit of 'closed' storage is avoiding Dust, which of course may not bother you, but is an issue if ink bottles/boxes are on open shelving. ....not that this bothers me enough to actually pick up a duster, ye ken! 😁😂😎
    I love this kind of video - all the vicarious excitement of New Stuff and Organising things.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  4 роки тому +2

      I'd forgotten the book video! Yes, you're right!
      And I am thrilled with this case. I did look at the Harbor Freight version, but I decided this one would be longer lasting. (My trouble is my father is a forester, so I grew up with a love of wood and wood working.) And yes, the base will have pens in it. A few of my pens didn't get homes in this case yet. They would all fit, but I left a lot of empty spaces. So the base will get the homeless oddities.
      My ink storage is not optimal, but it is fairly compact. I have an old chemical kit, an old microscope case, a shelf, and a drawer, all generally right behind me when I film my videos. And yes, the open shelf part of that storage plan is only dusted periodically.
      Maybe down the road I need a deeper drawer version of my pen storage for my ink.

      Afternoon to you, Margret, I hope you're holding up under 'quarantine' - I noticed your contribution here, & recalled our philosophical exchange on the inherent (historical) characteristics of inanimate objects - pens 'carrying over' from previous owners' writing instruments to ourselves, & the amalgam, thereto. Sure, just idle curiosity - I'm Irish for the most part, but my Da was Scots & Welsh - my Mam, Irish & French....no English in this fella...well, not for at least five hundred years (Genealogy's a wonderful thing, so). @@andrewtongue7084 Andrew, how nice to be remembered - thank you! I am indeed Scottish, from the far north, so I STILL find myself a long way from home here in the Midlands! There is no relation to Ms Christie, who I believe was English - though that usually seems to involve a range of contributions from all the British races and often some from northern and western Europe! To the best of my knowledge I have nothing but Scot and Norse and Pict in me : both sides of my family all hail from the North East shoulder of Scotland, but my Nana had Auburn hair, which usually means there was at least one viking visit at some time (she had a temper to match haha). I have never attempted genealogy though!

      I hope (as I deduce from the tone of your note) your excellent sense of humour is maintaining your spirits during the lockdown. I live alone, and am happy to spend nearly all my time alone anyway, so in some ways I feel better equipped than many of the extroverts among us! However, I've been surprised how being NOT ALLOWED to go out has made me irrationally anxious! Yesterday I wrote a long(ish) facebook post about how BAD my concentration was (really freakishly and upsetingly bad) - doing that very quickly relieved a lot of that stress - but I've had several sweet supportive posts in response which have also buoyed me up. People are very dismissive and snobby about fb, but - while I recognise how much of a time-sucker it is - I value the sense of community and connection it can offer, and I do believe that many of the relationships that you maintain on fb are just as real as others!

      & on a related note, I shared digs with a Scots fella - Gerry - he was from North Berwick…& even with my reasonable ear for dialects, it was rare that I could cop on to what he was saying, first time around - his brogue was that thick...it was sort of like listening to Rab C Nesbit !! ;D
      Right, I’m away to make leek & potato soup in the pressure cooker, & fix some French galette, with ham & cheese for our dinner, tonight - I’m the chef of the house, & teaching my son how to cook for himself as well - one of my Mam’s edicts - “A fella who can look after himself, is a far more attractive proposition to a woman (or significant other)...” Not sure that that panned out for me, mind… :D
      Take care of yourself, now - you know where I am if you’ve a mind to offload any further anxieties…. Slan go faoil,

    I've been hoping for a video on this topic, this is great. I'm envious a bit, that's a great splurge for a pen collection. I use popsicle sticks as place holders in my drawers when I have a pen out for use, mostly so that I don't plop a new acquisition into a slot that is already "taken." I have another small set of regular-size drawers (ALEX from Ikea without the casters) that holds all my ink, repair tools and supplies, and quite a few of the stupid pen boxes that I can't seem to make myself throw away.
    I'm curious whether you have any central record that keeps track of all your pens in one place?

      The ALEX is a good design. I use a low-budget relative for my pen-repair supplies. It was too oddly shaped for storing pens efficiently, though that was my original idea. Take a bar of glycerin soap and turn the drawers upside down. Rub the soap on the edges of the bottom of the drawer for lubrication. Very nice case, looks like old SKOOL craftsmanship. I was hoping you’d do a curating pens video, even though I don’t have nearly as many pens. I’m still disgusted at the fact that I don’t even know what pend I do own. I’ve never been good at organizing things, sorting pens by country is a good idea. The Harbor Freight suggestions are great, but I’d only need 2 drawers. 😷

      I love having my stuff organized. It makes me more peaceful. And, yes, I own way too many pens!
      This case is great, though. The International versions are Gerstner's "cheap" version. Add another digit to the price for their standard cases.

      I don’t think anybody owns too many pens, my wife would disagree. As long as you’re not bringing financial ruin to anybody, it’s all good. I know somebody who paid $1k for a barbecue grill!? I paid $1.2k for a phone. I think it’s worth every penny.

    Great video and a nice surprise this 12th day of voluntary house arrest. Beautiful chest and an excellent choice for your situation. The wood seems also to go perfectly with you nice wood floor. If I ever get around to a dedicated pen space this year Ive decided to go with the Brian Goulet IKEA ALEX solution and wall mount them. Somewhere I have missed the thing re naming the virus. Don’t tell me that SUMGI has copyrighted the Virus official name!!??

      Its base will be here soon. With the way the world has changed, I hadn't thought about these purchases from a happier time. You're right: wall-mounting might have been a better solution in this small house. It worked great for my desk!
      Nobody has copyrighted the virus name. But apparently UA-cam is demonetizing videos about the virus.

    Does the chest have any MDF or particleboard, or is it made entirely from hardwood and plywood?

      To me it look slike all hardwood and plywood. I could find no sign of particleboard or MDF. It is worth noting that there is a more expensive version of this same set of chests.

      Thank you! This video was spur of the moment, almost vlog style as I made decisions and made mistakes. I'm thrilled with this one. Gerstner International is a lot less expensive than the regular Gerstner cases. (The price on the regular ones adds an extra digit to the price.) Harbor Freight also makes similar cases at a lower cost.
      But my weakness is that I'm the son of a retired forester and the grandson of a wood-worker. This Gerstner appealed to all my biases!

    Hello, Jason - long time since I've written a comment to you, Sir. Pleased to see that you are in fine form. I do like your new pen chest, but the top section does seem a little shallow - I'd definitely employ that for ink storage - so I consider that I shall build my own version of your splendid case (my Granda was a caprenter & he passed all those skills onto me); like you, I am working from home - fielding calls from my students, but still have some time on my hands, & now is the perfect opportunity: Every cloud (seemingly) has a silver lining (yes).
    I'm not entirely sure why UA-cam should "demonetize" your presentation(s) - Covid-19 is here - & you're not being alarmist, so why penalise contributors ? Had to laugh at your thinly veiled reference to the above - "The Voldemort..."
    In calculation, I seem to have even more scribes than you, my friend - I'm going to need a sizeable container to hold my collection - scary, indeed !! Do take care,
    Best,
    Andrew :)
    P.S. I noticed your Lamy school pen, in wood, with the red, plastic cap & ball finial - I have that exact model, myself, with the letter 'A' stamped onto the nib - the A stands for 'Anfanger' (beginner) - novice or not, I love how it writes... ;D

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  4 роки тому +1

      I agree that it would be nice if the top were deeper. If I had the skills, I think it would be wonderful to build my own case.
      I'm not sure why they are demonetizing COVID-19 videos, but this is what I'm hearing from other creators. My own experience was a recent video called "Spring Break 2020" which was demonetized and spoke about the virus. My UA-cam income has plummeted even as my view count has increased, but I think this is due to the current economic situation.
      Yes, that Lamy ABC is great for inks that won't cooperate with any other pen. It really is a good pen.

    • @andrewtongue7084
      @andrewtongue7084 4 роки тому

      Seems crazy, Jason - you're not scaremongering - & UA-cam are hardly going to lose out...but I would concur, the socio-economic scenario is, no doubt, the overriding factor in this case.
      In terms of the Lamy ABC, it was one of my first ever purchases - & that's more than twenty years ago !! Stay safe, & keep it real, my friend :D
