  • Can you get better fuel economy with a fuel additive? In this video, we make UA-cam History by testing a fuel additive to see if it will actually give you better fuel economy. I sent out 20 bottles of the fuel additive to my subscribers to test their fuel economy. They went a total of 56,000 miles and the results are in! Here is the product I used: goo.gl/V16Hu3
    The test was proven to be statistically significant using a T-test by subscriber SX L after dopping the volvo outlier which means we got an average of .54mpg increase.

      I agree - this is some of the best science I have seen on the 'net in years. I love the clear statement of what is being tested and especially the data gathering. I would have cast out the one outlier (especially since we are looking for what we can expect) and would have expressed the changes in percent instead of mpg because one mpg means a lot more in a Ram than in a Prius, but we have the data available to do just that. When we convert the data to percent, we see the second to the last (Big Guy Review) is also a bit of an outlier, at 14%. Probably the same effect Chris surmised - the injectors needed the cleaning. With just the one outlier removed the average change is +2%, with both dropped from the list the average change is still within one point.

      Good grief I hope none of you still think this is "science" by any stretch of the imagination. "Best science"? No wonder people fall hook, like and sinker for things like "man made global warming" and the current Plandemic.
      They see a show or a teleprompter reader on the News and think "OMG! We're in trouble! We'd better do something -anything- fast!!" Yeah, we're in trouble as evidence by the lack of reasoning found in this thread.

    • @wholeNwon
      @wholeNwon 9 років тому +34

      +anti0918 Discarding the obvious outliers at both extremes is exactly what should be done. If the improved mileage is due to cleaning injectors, that improvement should be sustained for some period of time thereafter with subsequent tankfuls not containing the additive. I think that those data would be interesting. My guess is that the small improvement in fuel economy will be promptly lost. Perhaps Chris can contact his testers and ask them whether improvement was sustained.

      I certainly don't think that Chris is trying to plug a specific product at all. He fully disclosed the Volvo figures and pointed out the deviation from others. He also repeated that he saw no benefit in his own car. So, if that's a commercial endorsement for his own profit, it's certainly a very unconvincing one. I sure wouldn't use the stuff in my car.
      Chris makes high quality videos that undoubtedly help many people save a lot of money. I, for one, have learned several things from them. He deserves our support.

      It might’ve thrown off the number a little bit. If you look at the amount of people who got negative gas mileage and subtract the outlier which was 1.3 then you have 3 people who got less than -1 mpg and still quite a few people who got more than +1 mpg from this stuff.

    Chris,
    I've recently discovered your videos and all I can say is "WOW" and "THANK YOU!"
    I recently purchased a 2002 Honda Accord SE with 196K miles, and your vids have been very helpful with me fixing the few things that needed work on the car.
    I used to have a 1994 Saturn SC1/5-speed. Bought it new, and it was the best car I've ever had. Sadly it got totaled when I was the middle of a 3-car accident (234K miles on it). I am an easy driver, doing mostly highway miles in the LA area. Averaged 26,000 miles a year or so. My mileage would be anywhere between 27 & 32 in town, upwards of 37 mpg on a pure road trip.
    I would try different fuel cleaners, usually Gum-Out, adding it every 5,000 miles. Whether they really helped or not I never knew, but I figured what the hell, it's $5 - 7 bucks, what could it hurt?
    Anyway, about 15 years ago and with around 160K miles on the Saturn, I tried a fuel additive that I found in a WalMart that was made by (of all companies) Turtle Wax. I forget what it was called, but it was some fancy/exotic name, and cost about $10.00
    Added to an empty tank. Filled up & got my usual close to 400 miles on a tank of gas.
    BUT...after running that one tank, my mileage increased tremendously! In town was now always over 30, and road trips were between 39 & 42 (my all-time high)!!
    Started using it every 5,000 miles. After running a tank of gas, the mileage would shoot back up to the high numbers. Told all my friends about it, and they got similar results.
    And suddenly, around 2004, it was no longer available. I contacted Turtle Wax (letters, email, phone), and never got an answer as to why it was off the market.
    I'm not a conspiracy theorist but who knows - maybe the oil companies bought it out & killed it...
    I wish I could remember the name of the product. And I wish it was back on the market.
    Thanks again for the great vids & all the best to you!
    Tim

      Strange but true, an ounce to 8 to 10 gallons of (no ash tcw-3) 2 cycle oil can increase fuel economy. LT-1 Website explains it very well. Works in a Saturn and a Lincoln we own...Also helps to negate bad effects of alcohol in today's fuel.....

      If you change 10 hp in a 500hp car you won't feel anything, less than a 2% change.

      remember it did increase horse power a good bit which would make me think this test is inconclusive and use my head that it does increase MPG. Lets put our thinking caps on and realize increased HP means less straight on the car to pick up and if you drive it the same mpg should go up.

      you can buy one bottle that treats 480 gallons for 37.41, so if an average car gets say 24 mpg, that's 20 gallons you saved by the end of the bottle, and depending on where you live that can be upwards of 40~60$

      Except, the outlier wasn't thrown out. The actual avg was like 0.5 mpg, and even that might be due to random variables.
      I suspect it does help improve mpg an incredibly small amount, but only because it helps clean your system. After your system is cleaned, you don't need to add more of the additive in it to see that small benefit.

      @@runemage9008 In the Netherlands 20 Gallons is way more than 60$. 1 US Gallon = 3.7 LITERS, I pay 1.60 euro's (AT LEAST) per liter, so it's like 5.92 euro's per gallon, times 20 = 118.4 euro's saved, or roughly 130 dollars. I'm definitely trying this stuff.

    Doing a t-test (used to compare sets of data) of the 20 entries on the data sheet, and there is a 73.2% chance of the difference being due to random variance. Also, the standard deviations is much larger than the difference between the averages, which usually indicates that the difference is due to random variance (though in this case it is also due to using different cars).

    One problem though is you don't know if everyone was using the same method to calculate mpg, could have been a lot of errors and variables depending how they were calculating( at fill up etc, using the mpg on their dash if applicable, or just arithmetic error). Also weather patterns in different parts of the US could have changed during the duration of the test.

    Great video. This is about the best REAL WORLD test I've seen. It's not some controlled lab test on some closed track with no traffic. Driving the same car with the same driver. We all live in different parts of the US. With different weather conditions, cars, traffic conditions. Drive patterns and drive styles. A lab might "replicate" real world conditions but it doesn't beat the real thing. That is the reason a car might go 400,000 miles in a lab without any issues but will struggle to make it 100,000 miles in the real world. A lab might duplicate the real world but it will never be able to truly be the real world.

      reread yoir comment and think for a second what you have said...all test should be done in a lab with controlled variables. maybe the real world will be more demanding, but the point of testing is being able to reproduce the same variables again and again so you can JUST focus on playing with one variable and be sure theres no other unvoluntary changes that might bastradize the test without you knowing...internet wannabe scientists...

    Fred here I ran MAXX Fuel Supplement Company long before I saw your Honda dyno test video.
    My background is CAT, CUMMINGS, DETROIT, MACK AND CASE. Have certificates for two of the above mentioned. I have about forty years of experience, retired now. I have three bucket of bolts I've used MAXX in; a 93 Concorde 3.5 v6, a 96 F250 5.0 v8 and 08 LIBERTY 3.7 V6 . They all achieved minimal increase in mileage and since all three are 125,000 + miles it seemed to me it breathed a little new life in the old buckets!!!
    Another thing I find interesting is everybody talks about HORSEPOWER when in actuality TORQUE is what does the WORK!!! For the novice torque is what moves a car, train or ship!!

    This pretty much proves it doesn't work. 4% difference in fuel economy is next to nothing, and could be attributed to different driving style when using additives. Not to mention it would be worse if you didn't take into consideration top and bottom results (11mpg increase... yeah)
    Your test in a corvette also doesn't prove anything. Even slight wind can change fuel economy at highway speeds, so you may have been driving down and upwind when you drove in two directions. Only test that could prove anything would be a synthetic test with motor on a dyno. That's the only way to remove variables.

    • @schlafanzyk
      @schlafanzyk 7 років тому +8

      cruise control makes it worse, because it will keep the speed exactly the same and you don't even notice the effects of wind or hills on the throttle position, because the throttle control is completely out of your hands. that effect also decreases fuel economy overall when using cruise control instead of manual efforts, because the car prioritizes holding constant speed over constant throttle position. that's fine in a completely neutral setting, but as soon as hills, wind or other environmental factors play into the mix, cruise control performs very poorly as far as fuel economy is concerned. it's just about convenience.

    • @fargeeks
      @fargeeks 7 років тому +1

      +schlafanzyk Well of course it doesn't do well with hills because that is where the engine will change rpms just to maintain the same speed

    Its a good test but most results are within a margin of error you expect. Overall you don't really expect huge changes to your engine with an additive, its designed to clean and extend the life of your engine, not boost performance (very few claim to do that). I usually use it in high mileage cars which smoke, it removes the built up crap and makes the engine run cleaner and gives me a few more thousand miles out of it.

It was sitting for about 3 years and it startet on the first try, so not like your driftstang ;-). But the gas-mileage was pretty bad for a four cylinder. About 12.5L/100km (18.8 mpg). I used the earlier mentioned additive and it worked pretty well. Under similar conditions, my Merc uses about 9L/100km (26.1 mpg). So that's an increase of ~28%. That's pretty amazing.
    I just want to say, that you're awesome ChrisFix. Keep doing!
