The glider is the best way to fully master piloting. Greetings from Poland.
I agree. Greetings from Texas!
The thumbnail looked super badass, then I clicked on the video and it was the most chill, wholesome music lmao, not what I was expecting
Hmmm, is that good or bad? Lol! Maybe I'll switch it up next time!
One of aviation's purest forms of flight. Great work!
Thanks!
Very well done! Enjoyed that, thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
I'm never flown anything other than my own parachute a bunch of times :) I'd love to learn to glide. What a gorgeous video, thanks for uploading!
I tried it a number of years ago and what an exhilarating experience. My instructor had been a Luftwaffe pilot during the end of WW2. This was back in the early 90's near a small airport near Gregory, Michigan. What an eye opening experience for this amazing young girl. So proud of her.
Nice video. Reminds me of my first flying lesson, also in a glider, in 1983. A challenging and satisfying hobby. I earned my Silver Badge.
Its fantastic seeing youngsters learning to fly especially the young ladies. Women make excellent pilots. Great job following instructions
Nice video, great job! It brings back fond memories of my days instructing in gliders, particularly in a lovely K-13, and flying my 301 Libelle X-C. Then, sadly, but as bureaucrats often do, the Civil Air Patrol ended it all where we flew. Keep it going, Elvis, you’ll love it and learn a lot! You have a warm and caring instructor; enjoy the learning!
What an EXCELLENT video. I love the captioning too. Liked and Subcribed.
Great video. I hangar by a glider club and have thought about it. This peaks my interest again!
Thank you! It's a lot of fun! I hope you do it!
Nice job. Never flew a glider but it looks fun and tranquil. If that was first landing they did amazingly. Well done.
you can get a ride in one. if you look around it doesn't have to cost a lot
Awesome .. I was as teenager only a rc pilot of a glider. But sitting in such bird is the real deal. Excellent video. So much to learn ... and having such an experienced instructor makes it more easy to suck in the right process of decision making. That girl did it pretty well. tks foe sharing this clip.
Thanks! Glad you liked the video!
Wow!!! So envious- what a truly awesome experience- thanks for sharing
I hope to start getting some more videos out!
@@airfoiled can’t wait to see them!!
I've got about 10 hours of glider flight training and it was so much fun.
did this in my senior year in high school and soloed. Hell of a confidence builder.
They're all gliders when the engine quits, right!
so cool wish i could do this for my son when he gets older.
woww cool pilot. amazing man...
Wow .....very good talent
Awesome!
wow! The young lady it's very confident .
Looks like touch and goes might be hard to practice in one of these!
Not landing at that speed.
Well done!
Thank you!
Wow! Cool!!! 👍😍😍😍
Nice video. Great choice of music.
Thanks!
Used to fly gliders out of the gliderport in Calistoga, California, at the northern end of Napa Valley. Just to the east was a high ridge line so we did ridge soaring, which I loved. Sadly, that gliderport has been gone for a long time.
I haven't done any ridge soaring, but I hope to soon!
beautiful
very nice instructer...relaxed and inspires confidence. The young lady was very confident and observing all around her...she will make a competent pilot some day.
Thank you!
Great video. But as others have said a beany type hat is what you want, good lookout is essential as well as being able to look up underneath a cloud. Also, I was taught to pull the release twice and visually check the rope has disconnected from the glider.
Awesome work! Recommend getting some sunglasses that fit better though. Won't want to have to adjust them on final approach. :) GL on the license.
Use to fly Grob’s in Ohio in the 90’s. Lots of plowed farm fields for great lifts. Miss those days 😢. Also flew old military gliders. They were about as graceful to fly as a box. 😁
Great landing, I am looking to take some glider lessons out in Sterling MA..
I was a flight instructor a few years ago, it stays in your blood.
Thanks! Her landings are coming along nicely! You should definitely get your glider license. It is a lot of fun as well as an economical way to get your flying fix in!
Seems all very clinical now compared to the 70s , very exciting times and a long flying list of people wanting to fly.
very well done
Thank you very much!
When you've been flying business jets, seeing 55 knots as the airspeed in the pattern sure wakes you right up! Nice flight, nice video.
Thank you!
@@airfoiled I'm a helicopter pilot so I thought 55 knots looked fast! Good stuff and good luck with your flying.
@@ft6zzz I just did my helicopter rating last year. It was a lot of fun! I posted one of my R22 videos on my channel. What kind of helicopter flying do you do?
@@airfoiled I have been flying in Canada for 27 years. So that means lots of work for forestry, oil and gas, powerlines, some very fun work with biologists and geologists, and forest fires.
@@ft6zzz That sounds like some very challenging and rewarding flying! Would love to see videos!
I've got 4'000 flights in 103's as an instructor back in the day with the Air Training Corps. We called it the Viking.
Beautifull vid, very pedagogic, well done, congratulations !!
Just a remark if I may : in our gliding schools in Europe we absolutely ban, right from the very start of training, these large edges beautifull hats. It dangerously limit the vision into the all to important above sector. Our students are instructed to wear regular gliding bobs and such nice hats as seen in the vid are banned.
Pupils must be trained from their initial training to look out continuously and this includes looking above forward all the time even if there is no traffic to be anticipated.
Base ball like pets are also banned in our gliding schools.
Thank you for your comments. Yes, I agree about the hat. The brim is too big. We've talked about it and she has a different hat now. I will bring this consideration up at our club safety meeting, as well, so that our other glider pilots can further consider this.
@@airfoiled always happy to share experience ! Greetings from Belgium !
Also get some better-fitting sunglasses. She was pushing them back her nose every minute. An unnecessary distraction.
@@airfoiled Yeah, I'm an Instructor in the UK, and my club safety officer. Yes, wide-brimmed hats - whilst maybe not 'banned' - are seen as bad practice here. Narrow-brimmed are preferred. Not only do they restrict vision, especially forward and above (and remember we may end up in thermals close with other gliders), that particular hat must have made it really difficult for the instructor behind to see straight ahead, especially on aerotow! Also recommend advising pupils not to close the DV panel by the scoop... they're fragile and expensive! Comments meant to be constructive. It was a nice video, the airfield looks good, and the scenery around nice! Thanks for sharing. :-)
@@griffinbrungraber9498 Haha, yes, I agree. I used to have those types of glasses when I was young - they were too large and heavy for me and kept sliding off my nose the entire time, as well.
Just a tip .. I would get a pair of sunglasses that fit so you your left hand can be free in case you need to use it real fast.
Wow dami views congrats 👏
Great video. I'm doing my glider training in an original G103 :)
Thanks! It's a lot of fun, right? Where do you fly?
@@airfoiled I'm flying at Cowley, Alberta.
@@MatthewLine How are soaring conditions this time of year up there?
@@airfoiled Too snowy! We don't have the equipment to clear our field in the winter, so we're shut down. I've heard the wave conditions can be amazing in the winter, and I think the gliding club in Calgary still does some flying in the winter.
@@MatthewLine I've never flown in wave. Hopefully one day!
The Twin Astir was the plane where I learned gliding, it was a very nice and forgiving plane. One of my instructors even did some aerobatics with me one time. Sadly he passed away in a glider accident during a winch tow not so long after I got my license.
I'm very sorry to hear of this glider accident 🙁
@@airfoiled Thanks a lot. My instructor was preparing for the World Championship in Gliding which taking place in Austria this year. A couple of years before he participated in the same event in Australia. He was one if the best Austrian pilots. The funeral was very emotional, with a formation of planes with a glider in tow over the grave as he was buried.
Great to see children learning to fly!

FUN!
What an amazing talent! Wow! #trippontwowheels
Killer video! Even for us non flyers.
Magical. She's gonna make a great Starliner pilot between the Earth and Mars someday!
I think so, too!
Well done young lady - what a great attitude [excuse the pun] to learn to glide. You will do well! 😎😎

Great instruction flight. What a different air brake lever for a G103....is that an original one or a modification?
I've seen different brake/spoiler handles on Grobs. I really don't know about this one!
new friend here❤
👌
Nice video. I'm just wondering, in my country (Czech Rep.) we have to wear parachutes every time in glider. Is it different over there? Thanks and happy landings 🛩
Good question, I wonder as well! Short story of my own experience: way back I had to wear one on a instructional flight as well. Few years later at another field and flight I asked the instructor while up in the air why we didn’t have parachutes on our backs. He responded ‘because it’s useless ‘ and then immediately pointed the nose down in a steep angle to the ground which came really close in seconds. ‘Good luck getting out and pulling your chute in time’ he said while laughing and I got that.
By that experience I figured that a chute is useless (especially if you are inexperienced in pulling and making your way down on one) unless you will be flying above certain ceilings which will give you time to respond in an emergency, like unbuckle, open canopy, push off and actually pull the right cord. Hopefully a pro can tell what the recommendations and variables are at this point. When becomes wearing a chute more then apparent safety?
Some people wear parachutes in their glider because it doubles as their seat cushion. Other than that, parachutes aren't mandatory unless you are flying aerobatics.
Every situation is different. It's better to have one and not need it, than to need one and not have it!
Where was this filmed? I'm an inactive powered pilot, and this makes me want to take a closer look at sailplanes. I used to tow banners, and we sold our tow plane to a glider club.

Sailplanes are a blast to fly! Do it!
@@apexballoons Thanks!
NEW friend here done host
im currently confused with what apears to be the airbrakehandle being red, always thought they were universally blue (especially in glider plains).... red mainly being used for canopy jettison and related stuff.... at least the tow-cable-release thingy is yellow as expected
Hello! I've received a lot of comments about the red spoiler handle. I've never thought about it, and am not sure how it came to be red. I will try to find out!
Time for new sunglasses ones that stay in place for you !!
What about that landing, though? :)
Question. What happens to the tow rope after release? Do you have to release it over a certain area/height?
The rope will stay with the towplane which will then drop it at the end of the runway right before landing. This video will show the rope being dropped! ua-cam.com/video/cGP7_ylOIBE/v-deo.html
@@airfoiled Thanks! 😁
One concern I have- at about 4:34 she begins to be excessively fixated on the airport, and not practicing good scan pattern of the surrounding airspace. This is natural but new pilots need training and frequent reminders to keep their heads on a swivel. Vigilance in searching all directions for any possible traffic near the airport, particularly any who may not be on frequency, is paramount for safe operations. Nonetheless great lesson and smooth landing! She's got some good skills.
Thanks! She is doing fantastic!
😃😀👍👍👍
😁😁😁😁😁
Are the on the controls at the same time? Is that common for glider lessons?
Both pilots have a full set of controls. Either pilot can control the glider.
@@airfoiled I'm sorry there was a typo in my question that maybe made it hard to understand. I was asking if both pilots were controlling **simultaneously** for teaching purposes. I always thought only one cold fly at a time with positive transfer of controls.. but it looks like the instructor is telling the girl to fly while he helps controlling from the back seat.
(I have no flying lesson experience of my own)
@@ewthmatth Only one person is flying at a time, although the instructor can intervene if necessary.
its like flying a very heavy cucumber

Never seen a glider with a red handle for the speedbrakes. I ever thought that's equal around the world???
I've seen different brake/spoiler handles on Grobs. I don't know if it's original or not.
This isn’t the same spoiler handle as is on the stock twin ii or twin ii acro. The old one has more of a knob at the end of the spoiler handle and it is more of a blue color. Hope this helps.
In addition, this one seems further forward than the original model as well. When opening the older spoiler handle, you have to wrap your hand around it so your elbow doesn't hit the seat and prevent you from opening it all the way.
By any chance do you know a pilot named Shardo? I used to work with him in the San Antonio area. He took me up gliding once and we flew over Tony Parker’s house.
This needs headsets...but love the effort. I did this once and it verified that I like planes with engines...haha.
I agree! I'm looking into getting wearable microphones for the cameras.
Get her some sun glasses that fit, She was constantly pushing them back up
During the flight, her "fashion" statements were a constant source of distraction. Those "cool" Ray-Bans keep slipping off her nose, which can be a deadly distraction during the landing phase. Her hat's brim is too wide, limiting her peripheral vision and spatial awareness. Pull on the tow release handle "decisively and sharply" at least twice to ensure that the nose hook has released the tow rope. Aside from that, she'll learn to be an excellent pilot; her control of the aircraft was pretty good.
Nice video , is the hat appropriate?
No it’s not!
There have been a lot of comments about the hat. She has a new hat now that is better for gliders. You'll see in the next video!
@@airfoiled well done !!
@@markcourtney7251 Thanks!
@@airfoiled such a wonderful sport!!
Wow… your profession as a pilot is awesome and impressive.. keep safe host… thumbs up and done subscribe to your channel host… ajack
As a former tow pilot I would like to have seen both of you push your canopy upward after locking to insure the lock was holding. When the canopy pops open on tow the reflex action is to reach for it. A tow pilot was killed in California when an "instructor" in a glider had this happen to him. If a flight instructor doesn't respond appropriately how can a student be expected to do so? FIRST fly the airplane! In addition I didn't have any comments about releasing if you lose sight of the tow plane, something that needs to be done at the initiation of each tow and cannot be over emphasized. It may have been done earlier in the lesson but considering the importance of such an instruction I would suggest doing it just before take off and put great emphasis on it. Studies have shown young people might not remember something you told them two or three instructions ago but they might remember the last thing. Yes, glider pilots can get nasty on the internet but my experience is when you have a chance encounter in person with a nasty type they withdraw. Gliders are fun, helicopters are more fun. Fly safe my friends.
We had a similar incident here some time ago. No one was killed, but the glider was damaged. I do check the latches by pulling up on them directly. I don't like to have people push on the plexiglass because I'm afraid of causing a crack or weakening the seam over time. I've also towed in the past and agree on the importance of training and a good pre-departure briefing, including emergency considerations.
What rudeness. You lecture them about the video content then tell them your hobby (helicopters) is more fun then their hobby (gliders). If you were intending to get an important message across, it was lost in your arrogance.
@@nickhayley wow your are truly pathetic with your rudeness call.
This Soaring Instructor in this video

it looked too easy this way. But im sure its not.
Once you learn, it is a relaxing way to fly!
Is that student old enough to drive a car even?
You can solo a glider or balloon as early as 14.
If there are other gliders above you in the same thermal, I think you are going to regret wearing that hat....
Not to worry! No other gliders around and I have traffic information on my portable device 🙂
@@airfoiled Assuming there is no traffic and assuming your device works flawlessly.... you know what they say about assumptions, right?
@@michielburgering6988 I'm scanning for traffic normally, not relying on any assumptions.
@@michielburgering6988 hey buddy, I know what you're saying... But you could really try dialing it back some. You're not exactly welcoming this youngster, are you? I can guarantee you that a smaller hat has already been bought.
@AirFoiled - don't mind this guy. I don't know what it is about glider pilots but they sure do tend to be nasty on the internet. Just shrug it off and move along. A smaller hat will help you spot traffic far better, and it'll help your back seat pilot see better out front. Enjoy soaring 😊
@@TheSoaringChannel Sure I welcome this youngster! The world needs more glider pilots and this girl seems to love it! Please don't confuse my worries about a hat blocking her view for being nasty! I wish her and her instructor many happy flights!
The only thing which confuse me is the glider name GROB. Sounds not optimistic for me, Im Russian. Grob in Russian means coffin. I alm flying since 1966 and not scared but ...
Hahaha, I didn't know that! It's an unfortunate coincidence, I'm afraid! Grob is a company from Bavaria. There are many instances where the sound of a word in one language sounds similar to a word in another language with a different meaning.
Very good. Get some glasses that fit you.

Слава Україні!
Poor choice of hat by the student as the instructors forward vision is impeded to the point of his not being "in control". He is probably compromised. A ball cap would be better, he should keep a few to hand to his students, but then I'm a funny old fart, I don't like phones or cameras either as folk drop them into the control rods. Some drop them out of the ventilation sliders and that can damage the elevators.
