I have heard of jar flies. We call them either cicadas or locusts. I thought they were different 😊. I love learning new ways of how people name their surrounding buggy friends, like all the different terms for lightning bugs, glow worms, lantern flies, etc. We also call them Light 'em up bugs, but that's just us as far as I know 😁, I know they're beetles, but we just call all of them bugs 😂 😂😂😂
Dang it, Donnie. You purt near made me tear up again! I ain't heerd 'em called Jar flies in many a moon. Keep those wonderful videos coming, my friend....
Finally got to meet you in person!! Thanks for coming in the store today! I LOVE every episode I've seen! I enjoy your metal detecting, see what you're going to find this time. I'm especially fond of yours and your dad's childhood memories. Even though I didn't get to grow up in Tennessee, there are many similarities and even our dads' experiences! Thanks for your dedication, Donnie. I'm sure it can be a drag collecting the memory card from the trail cams. Your channel is a great stress reliever! Keep em coming! God bless😊
That's so kind of you my friend. Very nice to meet you. I'm so glad you enjoy them. God bless you my friend. It was a pleasure meeting you today. Take care. Thanks again for the talk.
Yep, I second this comment! I guarantee that it’s a JOB to run 25 trail cameras! And plus all the other stuff that you make for your channel.. and I know I speak for a lot of others when I say thank you, Donnie, for your dedication to the channel, we sure enjoy it! Your friend and Brother in Christ, Matt Taylor..
Thank you so much for sharing this my friend. God bless you. It can get a little hectic at times that's for sure. I really appreciate you saying this. Thanks so much. Take care my brother.
as kids we would catch them in August and my brothers would put them in their hand and act like they were shaving with an electric razor. you always bring back my childhood memories!
Donnie Laws, thank you for your time and dedication to sharing your knowledge of the great outdoors God bless you and yours Keep on keeping it real my friend
It's not this bad with one brood but this year we got both. But hey, there won't be another summer like this in our lifetime and probably not for another two whole-ass generations. Our lives are dope.
That Jar Fly is very loud! I can't tell if that's a Locust or a Cicadas but jar fly sounds good! Jar fly remined me of catching lighting bugs in a jar and letting them go free later! Thanks for sharing Donnie Laws and God bless!
I have also been in the woods and heard all the different things and sounds and thought about them and about the different plants and trees I have heard that different trees wood is harder ect and the use for different plants. There is so much to learn. Have a blessed day
In northern Illinois, we knew them as cicada. A noisy bug that I was told hatched every seven years. The noise was something else that they made. You could find their empty shell all over the tree trunks as they shed the skin to grow.
Wow! For 55+yrs we've always called those locusts or cicadas! Kansas. I think they are the sound of heat waves..(or Summer) Thks4 interesting video! Never ever heard of a jar fly!
So that is a jar fly! I only have crickets and grashoppers here in the city and havent heard one of those since I was young! Honestly never saw one before. (wasn't looking either though!) Thanks for showing us Donnie! God bless you and yours.
Drove thru Kentucky and Tennessee on I40 for the first time. We're fixing to relocate to South carolina. Wonderful country. Life at about 30 mph and it suits me fine.
Wow I’ve never heard of bar flies! We always called them locust …… or some call them cicadas. Thank you sir for showing one example of nature’s secrets. Blessings blessings! ❤️✝️
One (of MANY) things I love about New England is that we don't have all kinds of weird wildlife! LOL! I've never seen - or heard - or heard OF - a jar fly!
I have been present to several hatchings of them when visiting family in North Georgia...on one visit there was a duel hatch and one was black with red spots..never seen them before..but oddly they'd be silent at night but come daybreak a nonstop low putch drum or hum..was actually kinda spooky... Always appreciate all you share my friend stay cool and have a blessed week 🥵🇺🇸😇🙏
Wow Donny he sounded real angry, living in UK we don't get jar flies or cicadas, it's not warm enough, our winters would kill them off I think, it's one of the only things I like about winter, it kills of the flies, but they are interesting little devil's so thanks for showing us, love from UK xxx
Yup, my early yrs as a Navy brat in Japan we called cicadas “simmies” had little bamboo cages made just for kids to keep them as pets. I’ve always been fascinated by them💛
Always wondered what the actual name of those critters were. Now I know. If you have any pappaws or persimmons in your area this fall you could do a short video for people who have never seen one. Thanks Donnie!!!
Very interesting. I thought that they were just called cicadas. That’s an annual one. There’s a breed that comes out once every 17 years. That group came out 2 years ago and absolutely swarmed my area. I posted a few videos on my channel. I titled one “Cicada Apocalypse!!!,” they were absolutely everywhere.
Oh I was watching a video the other day about Trains lol, and the person was complaining about Jar Flies. I was wondering what the heck those were. Thanks you answered my question. I only known of them as Locusts.
Thanks for the video great videos I have heard about jar fly and have heard them in the woods since I was a little boy but never have seen one I often wonder what they look like. I really enjoy your videos I remember so much from my childhood. I also wonder about what a I believe they called it a screech owls look like one hollers then the one called back. Thanks again have a blessed day
Morning Donnie sir I’m looking forward to your metal detecting videos my wife got me a detector for my birthday and I’ve got to try it out soon. Yep that’s a jar fly
Hii Mr. Laws, those things get real loud, I finally saw one up close, one summer and I just knew thats what makes those loud sustained drills sounds in the trees on hot days, I never knew what they were called, but I know what they look like; from; Scranton, Pennsylvania 👩
They are edible. When I was a Scout Master, the whole scout group caught them and ate them years ago. The ones we caught tasted like parsley. We even skewed them and roasted them over the fire like the Native Americans.
@ Donnie Laws Hi. Have you ever been through one of their times where their mating season and there are thousands of them around you for like a week or two that and that noise they make is 24/7 no rest from it . I went through that about 5 years ago when I was living on the outskirts of town that noise will drive you insane with that many bugs killed most of the crops too. I was never so happy to see them leave. Haha
Ohhh I used to see those at the pool over the summer. Lol they would land on peoples heads and you would always have to go under to get them away from you.
Found a freshly "hatched" 1 myself yesterday. I keep the shells to write little notes & stick them in the shell so my wishes either come true or to ward off bad stuff, then burn it 😉.
I was told that was a cicada but I like jarfly better I've seen and heard more in Alabama than I have down here in Florida but I do live 3 miles from the beach.
My cat gets one in his mouth and then he smiles real big to make the bug buzz, then he closes his mouth. Then he smiles real big, then closes his mouth 😂😂😂
We used to gather up the shells, only found one before it hatched out, ugliest thing in world!!,Watched it hatch, something new & beautiful came from that ole ugly grubworm!! Hollerback if you want too!!🙏🙏
My neighbor's tree must have a gazillion of them. We called them locusts growing up but now I call them cicadas. About 4 years ago this HUGE wasp showed up, swarming back and forth. Found out it's a Cicada Killer Wasp. It catches a cicada mid flight and stings it which paralyzes it. Then it takes it down in a hole (one of many) so the larva can eat it when they hatch. That's how I remember what I read though but I can't get rid of them. The feral cats keep trying to catch them and I'm afraid they will get stung. The cats catch cicadas and eat them.
The cicadas are pests that somehow got to the North American continent from Asia. Our Jar Flys are green and have green eyes. No one seems to bring awareness to our disappearing locust. They just talk like those orange eyed cicadas are native, they're not they're an invasive species.
They called them fall bugs when i was little... or jar flys..as some called them..we know now they are yearly cicadas ..but hey they are loud and we know fall is on the way when you hear them.
I'm glad I'm not the only person that still calls them jar flies. 😄
I have heard of jar flies. We call them either cicadas or locusts. I thought they were different 😊. I love learning new ways of how people name their surrounding buggy friends, like all the different terms for lightning bugs, glow worms, lantern flies, etc.
