Making A Turtle Trap

- I had a blast trapping with @KinfolkFarmofGeorgia I decided I wanted to build my own trap. I had just seen a few photos online and figured I could give this a go.
Shopping List:
3 or 4 Inch PVC Pipe 10 Foot
4 90 degree elbows
Fence or something to make a cage
Zip Ties
Scrap wood
Silcone or PVC glue
Tools
Hacksaw
Woodsaw
Drill
Rubber mallet
Wire cutters

The kids seem so excited to help!
They love helping.
They make UV resistant zip ties. They can be found with external electrical conduit.
You can also get cheap bundles of "hanging wire" in the suspended ceiling section.
I think it's going to look "beautiful" when the turtles are in!!

I'll have to get those for the next one I make. I loved the entire clip of Mason filming. I had it cut down to just the clips I planned on using but he made me laugh so much I couldn't cut it.

In your next build lay a 2x4 across the pipe have ramps leading to it they will get on it to sun then plop off into the trap no bait needed

I actually gave the trap to the guy who let us trap his pond. It finished well that year. One thing I'd add to the trap is a sunning board going across. I'll have to add it to the next one.
these are for the water turtles, I don't think snappers will go in these... anxious to see how you do with this trap!!!
I know it did get a few turtles last year. Unfortunately I gave the trap to the guy who was letting us trap his pond so I won't have updates on it. I do have plans to make another. So maybe when I get it finished I can do an update video.
How'd it work out? I was wondering how the ramps worked. Did the turtles sink them into the water? If so, you might wanna add a short capped piece of PVC at the inside ends of each ramp to help it stay afloat. It's a cool trap for sure. I also had a vision of a piece of rebar or such standing straight up from the middle with bait hooked onto it in order to encourage the turtles to come check out it, but hold it off the bottom where they could just eat it through the bottom of the basket.
Not to sure yet. From what I've seen in Shane's videos not good yet. I might need to fix the ramps. The bait idea is a great idea. I'm hoping to get the turtles trying to sun and the fall right in.
@@TheWrightFarms - They definitely would fall right in reaching for bait in the middle. I'm guessing the ramps just sink down too much is why there are no turtles in the trap, but it could just simply be that it is something different in the environment and given time they would get used to it. 🤷♀️
Yeah bait might help. It could be lots of things. I'm wondering if they can't gain traction on the ramps, or not in a sunny enough spot, or just takes time for them to notice and try it out.
