    I was at the San Carlo in April 2023 to see Kaufmann in Die Walkure. This Puritani is very good, and I saw Sutherland, Sills, and Anderson. Oropesa is very fine.
    P.S. I just watched this performance again, and I'm amazed at Xabier Anduaga. He is fantastic!!

    What a stunning cast! Brilliant how easily and naturally Oropresa's sound pours out from her. And the timbre is just so intrinsically beautiful. Xabier Anduaga is equally outstanding - a new star in the heavens. A real Italianate tenor so perfectly suited to this extremely difficult repertory. Few master it with the perfection heard here.

    I simply cannot believe this incredible performance I was privileged to see in Napoli last September has been posted up. Thank you so much it was a stunning evening at the opera one of my highlights of an operatic going life of almost 50 years now. Xabier Andagua is the emergent new tenor superstar of international opera his bel canto is just getting better and better, and he isn’t even 30 yet! As for Lisette Oropresa, she is just stunning and the chemistry between them both on stage was there to be seen by all.
    The A teo Cara at about 41 minutes in I was sitting in the second row of the stalls directly in front of Xabier Andagua and Lisette Oropresa
    The Queen and Arturo scene at about 53 minutes, just listen to Xabier Andagua in this scene
    Lisette at about 1.40 moving into her mad scene and then the two supporting men at about 1:45 she was just brilliant in this scene, I mean brilliant.
    Just listen to her at 1.50 how she sings along with the orchestra - it was spellbinding in the theatre and those top notes - wow.
    As for the men on the fringes of this opera - just listen to the duet at about 2.02 through to 2.12 - it is just stunning. Davide Luciano and Gianluca Buratto
    Then OMG the duet with Lisette off stage at about 2.17 and what follows it just goes on and on.
    This is a quite brilliant performance. Listen to this young man at 2.44 how he breaks into the lush tones of a tenor that knows he is in control of his own destiny, this young man is going to be the voice of the next 25 years. He is simply stunning in this repertoire.
    After this aria Lisette Oropressa just looked at him and you could see in her eyes what she was thinking - I spoke to her at the stage door afterwards and asked her what it was like singing with him she said oh my god he is going to blow the world away! Shes not bad herself
    Believe me this is a stunning performance and it is wonderful to be able to relive it again and again!!!!
    Thank you San Carlos! This was a night at the opera I will never ever forget and now see it over and over again!

      @@dorothychuang7872 you are welcome, I still look at it at least once a week, it was a truly spellbinding and in my opinion one of historic proportions. All of us opera goers have our own views, all I know is this performance live in the theatre had the power to change my life, or at least leave me knowing I had seen an operatic performance of historic significance, what's more what came from the stage is that the performers knew they had given all they could! It was spell binding!

    This is an utterly stunning, musical, patrician performance which for me encapsulates the heart of Bellini and Bel canto - they're all splendid but the energy and cohesiveness arrive from the conductor. I'd never thought i'd hear something like this in the 2000s. Historic performance.

    ❤❤❤👏👏👏 Thank you so much for posting this wonderful performance. I read about Xabier Anduaga, but missed his debut at the MET last year. He is excellent. He delivered all the high notes and falsettos beautifully. He also knows how to control the column of his voice very well and he is only 29 now. Looking forward to seeing more of him.

    What's changed in this new 'critical edition'?
    My favorite "Puritani" was June Anderson and Gregory Kunde in 1993 San Francisco. It wasn't just La Anderson's pure note-perfect singing, but the dreamy, melancholy timber of her voice suited Elvira (and Bellini) perfectly. Kunde sang like a belcanto god, hitting Arturo's 3 high notes (come scritto, not optional) C-sharp, D-flat and F-natural like he was eating them for breakfast every day! Good times.

      I saw June sing Elvira/“Puritani” at least half a dozen times - her FINEST portrayal. She’s the perfect Bellini singer (always has been) but in Puritani she cannot be beat. I recall with marvel even her first few lines sung off stages (in prayer, normally a throwaway) were SUBLIME and let you know what was in store. STUNNING in every way - she never disappointed. How I wish we had a better video of her and Blake’s Puritani from Paris.

    I saw the last performance of I Puritani at the San Carlo in Napoli on 16 September 2022. A truly memorable experience! Someone may say that Oropesa is a little bit too light for this role, and Anduaga should keep improving his technique (starting from his diction), but they both were stunning, much better on 16 September than here. And I can’t forget Davide Luciano as Riccardo.
    This is a performance to cherish!

      I saw Anduaga in Sonnambula, and keeping in mind that he's very young, and relatively new to Opera, he's promising enough for belcanto roles and did a good job as Elvino. I have the impression that he has to mature further and overcome insecurities to sing these roles with more ease. And yes, it wouldn't hurt that he made sure his diction was clean and vowels are rightly pronounced. It is painful enough to listen to some English-speakers butchering Italian, Spaniards should know better 🤣

      Se il baritono è un tenore allora il tenore è un controtenore, il soprano è un soubrette, e il basso è un baritono.

      Yes, this is very common nowadays. Under developed tenor voices end up singing baritone and underdeveloped soprano voices sing mezzo.

  • @misanthropelife

    Joan sutherland’s old recording of i puritani confirms one thing: her voice was huge. The soprano here is good but sounds pip squeak even with the mic beside her.

    • @alejandrotm
      @alejandrotm 10 місяців тому +2

      There is no point in comparing Lisette Oropesa with Joan Sutherland, La Stupenda was almost twice Lisette's size, and that implies a bigger voice somehow.
      One thing I can say after watching Oropesa live is that she doesn't sound pip squeak at all. It's not a huge dramatic voice, because that needs a larger human being to create the resonance and then project it into the theatre, but put into the right repertoire and with a good conductor, she's cream of the crop. If one meets her face to face, she's noticeably good looking, but not very tall and rather slim, so the sound she creates exceeds expectations for her physical shape.

    • @marcelbureau2753
      @marcelbureau2753 8 місяців тому +3

      What gives a big sound and good projection is the vocal technique!!! It has nothing to do with the size of the body. The tiny squeaky sound produced by this soprano is solely due to bad technique and not to her small build. Even if she manages to scream oven the orchestra it does not mean it is good singing.

    Оропеза в ее сегодняшней форме - уже второй эшелон (если вообще когда-то была в первом), ее пискляво-жестяной тембр вообще недопустим в партии Эльвиры. Для меня большая загадка - как она оказалась в Сан Карло именно в этой партии. Полагаю, срочная, ооооочень срочная замена. Андуага действительно, как тут уже написали, наконец-то начал работать над своей манерой исполнения бельканто и многое уже неплохо, но продолжает вскрикивать, никак не может удержаться. Оркестр куда так бежал, тоже не понял. Абсолютно проходной концерт, без откровений

    Uncut. Very nice. Maestro Sagripanti keeps things moving but is accommodating to his singers. Bellini can become very glacial and lachrymose at too slow tempi. Oropesa and Anduaga very good. The concluding cabaletta was originally a duet with Arturo taking the lead.
