It is tough on everyone..my daughter is cabin crew,she sat on the plane for 3 hours awaiting to go,she takes so much abuse from angry passengers when it is out of her control, please 🐝 kind to staff it isnt their FAULT ,aviation is a tough job,but the safety for all always and quite rightly so comes 1st ! She will be on standby waiting at the Airport tomorrow,hopefully it will get sorted, I only hope that travellers have insurance,it is an absolute must in these sort of situations ! ✈

been waiting to depart for 7 hrs at T3 Heathrow and about to leave finally , ive had to use UA-cam and twitter as my main source of info as no information was given to passengers and only at 5pm were there any information given to passenger , absolutely shocking by Heathrow and the airlines.

Dropped me at the hotel I had to book well before Easy Jet offered complimentary hotels, trained in NZ, and as I'm a Kiwi, was on my way home to Inverness , it was the kindest, most decent act of the day. My money is on it either shutting down to prevent an outside hack, or the hack being successful. The infrastructure of the UK is constantly being attacked in this way. When your bank card suddenly won’t work, when internet services go offline or there are unplanned large scale power cuts, it’s usually down to those reasons. I doubt we’ll ever know the truth what happened in this case.

There were problems even before the glitch. We were told our flight from South Africa on Sunday was cancelled on Saturday night due to “operational difficulties”. We were given a new booking for 9 days later! And now this came out on Monday. We weren’t even offered hotels or money to keep us for those 9 days. Thankfully we didn’t need it as we are staying with family. But the fact remains they are not doing enough!
No, it's just that sometimes technology has its moments and needs fixing. It was the traffic light system that effectively went down, so while that was being fixed they had to manually process the landings and departures rather than it being handled by a very sophisticated AI. For those who are asking for backups, that's not really how this works. The manual processing is the backup, otherwise what you'd get are a bunch of planes being told to attempt landing at the same time causing serious collisions.

The airlines need to pay back peoples tickets. When its "beyond their control" they usually refuse to pay out. You can however still get them to pay. They can sue the airports for money, you can't. You go to the aviation agencies.
It depends on the airlines.. I think most long haul UK airlines would cover or have insurances to cover etc. So you can ask for compensation. It is the chartered ones, the ones which he talks of about single private air plane kind of scenario. But this does add pressures to all these airline staff and ground staff as well. Plus during lockdown, lots of airlines are restructuring and asking for peanuts as pay as well. THIS makes it even WORST. Lots of people quit... Pensions are gone. So.. it is even harder to find good and experienced staff. When something is this critical.. and people had such experiences, and yet, they probably wouldn't be able to live and to work in or near the airports. So finding staff to live near one is even harder ! Lots of airline struggles to recruit as well...
My parents were stuck in Australia during Covid and the Emirates flight home was cancelled. Emirates refused to pay out and they needed to purchase a repatriation flight with BA back to Manchester. 18 months later somebody on Facebook mentioned the Montreal Convention, I am unsure the exact details but it stated that a carrier should guarantee the journey or compensate accordingly. It took a while but did indeed receive their 6k in quid back.

This isnt a new issue, its been happening since Thursday. We have been stuck in spain since friday due to our flight being cancelled and cant fly home till Thursday. Thats 6 days stuck in spain. And there was a lot more cancelled flights there throughout the weekend, not just Monday

One major issue is airlines expecting everyone to check twitter - not everyone has twitter - now given a confusing name - and it often requires a person to log in to read things and is not in chronological order. Airlines should update their actual websites - the things most people check - and be more proactive on contacting passengers. I've just checked airline websites - BA has a link that leads to nothing, Ryanair has no info at all, EasyJet has some info. Airlines should be contacting passengers.

According to the Alliance for Aviation Across America website dated August 23rd, 2017 'ATC privatisation 'has resulted in a total meltdown' , leading to outages, widespread technical glitches, widespread UK delays and mass standings.and resulting in calls for modernisation and a potential government bailout. This isnt a new issue, its been happening since Thursday. We have been stuck in spain since friday due to our flight being cancelled and cant fly home till Thursday. Thats 6 days stuck in spain. And there was a lot more cancelled flights there throughout the weekend, not just Monday

The same situation was in Ukraine in January 2022 before russian invasion started 😢 we were flying to London from Zhuliany airport and all checking procedure was in "hand regime".

One major issue is airlines expecting everyone to check twitter - not everyone has twitter - now given a confusing name - and it often requires a person to log in to read things and is not in chronological order. Airlines should update their actual websites - the things most people check - and be more proactive on contacting passengers. I've just checked airline websites - BA has a link that leads to nothing, Ryanair has no info at all, EasyJet has some info. Airlines should be contacting passengers.
