I so much hope to see this SWELL Swell for myself, someday, the sooner, "Freeway". Your timelapse rate is just about perfect; it's like you're piloting me along in a Testarossa! Those red mesas on the Western side, send shivers up my spine. They remind me of an armada of closely packed colossal ships, battling through an even more colossal storm-tossed ocean, and the ones, where the highway's pinched in the lower part of the grade, well, it's like quite a few of those ships got into one hell of a collision! Usually, most of this desert rimrock has level and plumb strata, but not these. They seem to be tilted off-kilter, and that's what gives them a unique majesty.
This is a great drive. I-70 from Denver to I-25 is my favorite interstate drive with this section being the best part. What we don't get to see is the 6 scenic stops in the San Rafael Swell which are incredible. @Freewayjim, thanks for filming and sharing this!
Great video! Very informative- I love roads and I learned a little about that part of I-70. I drove this part from arches to Zion last September. Driving through this San Rafael Swell was one of the most memorable drives of the entire 30 day roadtrip. I LOVED the entire drive this day from the red rock plateaus to the lush green mountain valleys back into the red and white cliff valleys of Zion. Amazing. I love Utah. I’m gonna explore some more on your channel. Thank you!!
As a retired sailor I have been all over the country and love driving. Something my wife doesn't understand at all. The last twenty years have kept me relatively in my area of central Florida with work and family obligations. I really enjoy your videos. They remind me of the places I traveled and the scenery is wonderful along with the production value. As a motorcycle rider I find myself leaning into the corners smiling with the changing scenery. The wife laughs at that but I can't stop. Keep up the great work and I enjoy your music selections as well.
Another amazing ride! Just incredible! It always amazes me how different roads can be throughout the USA from the urban to the countryside to the mountainside and the plateaus of America.... just makes my patriotic heart fill with pride! Just a great ride- beautiful..... just beautiful!
You have really captured the incredible. Your I-70 series resonates with me. For all the fond memories. Of my families cross country trip, from Southern California. Moving to our new home in Michigan. I will say, having traveled through the swell in 1989. Its still beautiful! I concur with you on the eastbound segment. As this is the first time I seen it westbound. The eastbound is untouchable. Thanks again for the fond memories. I Look forward, to more excellent videos from you Jim!
Spectacular! I remember seeing FreewayBrent's video of this area a while ago, so I was fully prepared for the great video! Geology lesson: Those limestone cliffs are even more interesting when you realize that they're made up of millions of years of shellfish sediment, as the area used to be a vast inland sea stretching from Kansas and Nebraska, westward through central Utah - approximately 100 million years ago!
Thanks for this Jim! I absolutely loved passing through here on my way to Colorado a few years ago. The pavement is in way better condition in this video than when I passed through here.
Another great video Jim! Interesting (and maybe obvious) fact, the stretch of I-70 from Green River to Fremont was the longest construction of an entirely new route over virgin territory since the building of the Alaska Hwy in the 1940's. Looking forward to SLC.
Just amazing...winding through and no city to spoil the view! Pretty nice music to complete our ride with you :D. Thank you for sharing and as always such an enjoyable ride!
FWJ, I must say your series starting with climbing up the mountains from Denver through this video has really been must see UA-cam TV. It's probably the definitive YT coverage of I-70 from Denver to Utah.
Just watched this again, again. Freeway Jim, 13-14 I believe I've seen it 8 -10 times now. Just excellent. That music turned out to be ideal for this masterpiece, sir. To me, This video is the standard, so far.
(Part 2 of 2) ...but over the years, Utah has come to realize the benefits of having a major cross-continental Interstate, serving long-distance traffic. Nice presentation, with a pleasant soundtrack. Going to the favorites section.
Fabulous! I do think heading East is the better experience! It's like driving through the Grand Canyon. So glad you posted this: have tried to explain it to people... :)
This stretch is 18 miles between exits but it is in an area where is is 100+ miles between gas stations, there is nothing out there, looks like Wylie Coyote 's place. No hairpins, just sharp curves. Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
How good was this video? I suddenly and unconsciously thought I was smelling tar when you hit the newly-paved section westbound. You made great use of the light in this video, as you have through all of the recent I-70 videos.
As always, great efforts from your side in producing this wonderful video. My two attempts to go through the Swell failed, once in 2015, and in 2018. Both the times I got stuck at the Exit to 24 from Green River wondering how to come back to I-70E, after visiting the view points. Google maps didnt help me. I wasnt confident in getting back on 70E without going all the way to Salina. Had traveled all the way from India :-(. May be one day I will make it.
7:57 that was a fantastic looking rig you passed, it had a dragster in the trailer, but just couldnt tell if it was one of those I see race on TV for the NHRA.......
@@Freewayjim That's cool. Though I really like Rik Emmett on this one. I had to download that track to my playlist! I noticed that this video works well at half speed, it's reasonably smooth to watch and isn't as jerky as other videos.
@@davidborrink137 The remix is slowed down substantially for this to fit the song I used, it's different enough from the original that it should feel like a new video.
Another great ride. I've noticed that in a couple of these videos there will be a Ford Fiesta zip by you on a mountain road. I drive one of these and they only have 120 horsepower but they are fun to drive in the mountains.
(Part 1 of 2) Excuse my language, but that was f'ing awesome! Just like you, I don't really care for the details regarding geology. In fact, I found the subject quite boring in both high school and college. However, it's 100x more interesting to see something like this in a video, vs having to read about it in a textbook. It was a pretty controversial decision for Utah to spend money on an Interstate that ran through virtually little to no human habitation (which remains to this day)...
another fantastic video, just like all the rest of them, you always pick the best music to go along with them also, just curious though, why did you put JUST SWELL at the end of the title, couldn't figure that out...LOL Thanks

The video was great. I believe that Interstate 70 should've terminated in California or Interstate 80. This extension will make I-70 the third or fourth longest highway in the U.S. behind I-40 and I-10.
3:53 Seriously!? Don't they have at least an exit or two to get off the highway at along this stretch? 7:13 First time that I saw a rest area during a downgrade. 7:26 Are these actually HAIRPIN turns on an Interstate!? That was such a "swell" video and ride! :)
LOL, you must be new here, actually, it doesn't kill the video, and speeding up the footage goes with the tempo of the music a lot better. People are not going to sit here and watch a "real-time" (which looks slower than it actually is) video for 45 minutes but they are more likely to watch for 10-11 minutes, so I cover more ground this way. This has been a successful channel in its genre for over 10 years, I think I'm doing it right, and speeding up the footage doesn't kill anything. Let me put it this way, I sure as hell would not sit and watch a real-time driving video for more than 2 minutes because it's boring as hell!, why would I make one?
@@Freewayjim I really enjoyed this video! I drove this stretch eastbound back in 1984, would love to do so again. Note: I have calculated that, given the 15 second intervals between mile markers, you are traveling at 240 MPH! Wow!

I'll bet truckers love this stretch. Great highway with little traffic, gorgeous views, and probably nice weather most of the year!
Oh wow Jim, great video of one of my favorite sections of my favorite Interstate. Thanks for taking me back out there!
I think the eastbound view of the Swell is most impressive. The high prominence on the left (going east) is called the Red Dragon
I agree, eastbound is the better view.

Jim, for scenery video like this one, what are your usual focus and scene settings? Do you put auto on both?
