The San Rafael Swell used to be in my backyard!! I used to own an old ranch and the road heading east was where my home was. But you missed the Swinging Bridge. You passed it on the way in. I remember we used to have to drive, carefully, over it to get to the camp ground. My kids, who are adults now, used to play in the San Rafael River. The bridge was built back in around the 1930's. But the BLM has preserved that bridge and built the newer one. The construction was delayed a year since there were a pair of Perigrine Falcons who built a nest there and didn't want to disturb the nest. You also missed Swasey's Leap. It's a gorge where the San Rafael River flows below but on top the rims are about 20 +/- feet across. And some fellow made a bet with some other cowards he and his horse could leap over to the other side. He did and won the bet, hence Swayes Leap. The winds are notorious at the Wedge. You also missed the dinosaur tracks. But overall, you did a great job on the video! I miss my home there in Utah. It was a great place to raise my kids. Today, from learning the work ethics on the ranch, and exploring the beautiful desert of the Swell, they both now work in the medical profession. My daughter still has horses and rides as much as possible in the Southern Appalachian's here in North Carolina. It's nice here, but too many trees, can't see the beautiful landscapes here as much because of the trees. LOL BTW, I cried when you were driving thru the Swell. For me the deserts of Utah is home for me.
I moved from Utah to WA last year and the San Rafael Swell was my favorite weekend overlanding trip. Thank you for this video, feels like I am right there (or as close as I can get 50 miles from the Canadian border). Well done sir!
It is a beautiful area. I was in there about 12 yrs ago MTB with some friends. We drove into an acess area off the interstate to a small camping area. We were only in for a ride as we were staying in Green river. It was early April and the weather changed rapidly from sun to rain to snow as we were riding. After an hour or so it was quite miserable and we rode back to my truck, a GMC 4WD Suburban. The dirt had now turned to that adhesive gumbo and our bikes were unridable and walking was quite excitingly difficult. We loaded up the bikes and were going to head out the way we came when a local sherrif stopped and suggested we go a different route. OKAY! We ended up on the plateau top driving through 12 -18inches of red snowy slop for what seemed eternity in a blinding blizzard. Of note the GMC had a nice set of Michelin LTX road tires. Not the best for this. I remember opening the door wondering if I had a flat and seeing the tires rotating with a 4 inch or so coating of that bentonite type mud. We finaly dropped off the swell 20 miles north of GreenRiver onto Hwy 6. An extra 20+ miles and a definate sensation of we are going to be out here a lot longer than planned! Not sure why that sherrif suggested that... but grrrrr!. The lesson learned" These roads are impassable in wet weather" As the signs says. Cleaning the bikes and truck is a whole other story.
Wind...the nemesis of all tent campers. We've recently decided to go with a truck camper because of too many nights of packing up everything because of the wind.
One of my favorite places in Utah. My dad grew up in Emery County. My kids and I were lucky to see a bunch of desert bighorn sheep in Buckhorn wash and off the edge of the Wedge Overlook.
9:52... I'm so glad you included these bridges. We have to respect the workers and engineers who gave us these privileges that the people before us didn't have.
Cannot wait. Will be up there in about three weeks for a 10 day overlanding trip. Taking Rim Rocker Trail from Colorado into Utah. Will spend a couple of days in and around the Moab area exploring and camping and then off to the San Raphael Swell area to get away from the crowds. Great job on the video!
Your videos are better because they are authentic, hence the reason I subscribe to your Patreon. Don’t ever get like Justin McBride, who so brazenly acts as if America’s public lands are his alone. He keeps locations secret and hopes to monetize them via this platform, rather than do what we all aim, which is to share our love for the outdoors. The operative word there is “SHARE.” No, Sir, what you do and how you do it is SO much better than Justin’s as evidenced by your growing subscriber numbers. We love your vids.
I appreciate your support, but disagree with your perception of Justin. He's a good guy and does what he believes is best. To give you another perspective: some of his subscribers can't stand me and think that I'm too revealing about where I go, which leads to the best places being over-loved. You don't have to like his videos, of course. He's very outgoing, where I'm more of an introvert, so we have very different styles!
Beautiful video and scenery, those drone shots really show it off well. That storage system looks super cool and the custom engraving was a nice touch!
Beautiful episode! I'm planning a visit to the area this year via the TAT. Hope the many YT videos popping up about the area don't make it difficult to find a camp spot, lol.
Love the video. It was fun to see many familiar places from a birdseye view. I keep going back to the Swell and there are so many more roads to explore.
Loved your video! The drone footage was awesome. San Rafael Swell has been our go to spot for years so it was nice seeing familiar sights from your drone. Regarding the Burpee dinosaur quarry, we were there when the museum people were digging and I have video of that and the actual bones. They hide the locations of over where they have dug so people don’t remove any of the bones. Saw your Bills cap and I’m originally from Buffalo now living in Montrose, Colorado. I stumbled on your channel by accident and have subscribed to see your other videos. Still can’t get over your drone footage! 😀👍
Been watching your videos for a while and they’re always great. This one your drone footage is so incredible! Great camera moves - really exciting and fun to watch. I loved the swooping banking shots. Who is flying it when you’re driving?
Well done. Great trip. Drone footage fantastic. Always wondered what the top of some of the sandstone structures looked like. Was holding on to my chair when you flew the drone through the arch. That arch looked like an "elephant" with its trunk. Amazing what beauty lies off-road in the desert.
You went on a trip that has taken me 20 years to complete and about 40 trips , that was quite the detour to do the Shaffer trail though, You need to look up the Flint trail , way more scary.
Amazing! Might go here for my next Utah trip instead of dealing with the madness that is Moab. Take the rimrocker from CO to Moab, then jet over on the 70.
Really enjoy watching your videos, as I spent many years in the Southwest. Makes me somewhat home sick. But I want to ask you what type of roof top tent do you have on the Runner? I'm in the market for one . Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work!
We have been through the San Rafael Swells and it was great to see a different perspective with the drone footage. I looked at Justins channel and didn't see the San Rafael video posted yet, but I subscribed and look forward to seeing his composition. As always, your video productions are amazing. Safe travels! PS; could you get someone to film you doing what it takes from grabbing the drone and piloting it for your video content to the return and land? Thanks!
@@RevereOverland I would like to see how it's done. I'm still trying to learn how to use mine. It sure adds a lot to a video that can't be achieved with just a camera on the ground.
Yes. One of my favorites as well. Last September we started at the top, and finished with Potash. As you said, not technical but amazing views. As I grow older I focus on nature, views, destinations and memories. Technical “stuff” will come up every once in a while and that’s why we build the rigs. Right ? This was a great episode.
Sorry, you’re right. I totally forgot about National Forest. I was thinking about anything administered by the National Park Service, which includes National Monuments, National Seashores, National Recreation Areas, etc. I’m sure there are other exceptions too.
Your videos really are inspiring. Beautifully filmed, and narrated with a wee bit of British dry humor 😂 Actually, it would be “humour” in Oxford English, wouldn’t it? 🤪
Good video mate but if I may make a recommendation. Slow down a bit, show camp, let your buddies talk, the editing was really jumpy and fast with little time to focus on what you were showing. Too much music, too much drone, not enough personality. Thanks

Those panorama shots of the scenery are just fantastic especially with your face in the middle of the shot.

Lol. I was a little nervous flying through since it was pretty windy!
I hope you stopped at the black dragon wash panel, probably my favorite one in the swell

Didn't you camp at that missile silo a year or more back?
Almost did! It was a little too creepy. Lol.

Yup! Up Long Canyon, down Shafer.
great video!! :)
Thank you!
Did you have to pay or get a permit for this trip
No. If you go into the Capitol Reef scenic drive (we didn’t) then you’ll need a national park pass or pay the entrance fee.
Sad to know the Justin B. never the shared a location to avoid the flooding of people and you you go ahead and share that location out on the open!
What?
"Anything beginning with national you just can't fly in . . . ." That's simply untrue. Almost all USDA National Forest land is not off limits.
