  • If you know how to suffer, you suffer much less.
In the first part of the talk, Thay explains how to make good use of suffering, learning the art of suffering in order to create understanding, compassion, love and happiness. It is like the mud and the lotus flower, a good gardener knows how to make good use of the mud. In other words, rather than running away from suffering, learning to be in touch with it, embrace it and look directly into it; this has the power to heal. The cessation of suffering is in suffering itself. Having the capacity of listening to our own suffering, understanding it, then we suffer less.
Thay explains the chant of Namo Avalokiteshvara.
    Chanting starts at 39:30.
The second part of the talk starts at 1:13:00.
In the second part of the talk, Thay explains how to invite to the bell of mindfulness, a practice that brings peace and happiness right away. It reminds you to live deeply every moment, in the here and in the now. You listen to the bell and enjoy, because the energy of mindfulness penetrate your body, your cells, and you are established in the present moment.
Also, walking mindfully is an easy way to live deeply every moment. Walking quickly is a habit that was transmitted by our ancestors. When you run, you miss the now. Walking mindfully heals you, nourishes you. You are solid, you arrive at every step. If everybody do the same, the collective energy is powerful and brings peace. Breathing in and breathing out mindfully, you enjoy walking and you arrive home, in the here, in the now.
(This is the Dharma talk in the Summer Opening Retreat, held in Upper Hamlet of Plum Village France on the 29th of July, 2013.)

"Ifyou don´t escape, if you allow the suffering to be there, if you are ready to face it, if you are not trying somehow to forget it, then you are different. Suffering is there but just around you; it is not in the center, it is on the periphery. It is impossible for suffering to be in the center; it is not in the nature of things. It is always on the periphery and you are the center.
So when you allow it to happen, you don´t escape, you don´t run, you are not in a panic, suddenly you become aware that suffering is there on the periphery as if happening to someone else, not to you, and you are looking at it. A subtle joy spreads all over your being because you have realized one of the basic truths of life, that you are bliss and not suffering."

Thay’s example and teachings have deeply transformed my life. Thay taught me how to stop-to come home to myself, to touch deep stillness-and to honor, embrace my suffering and generate authentic joy despite deep traumatic wounds. Once I was able to do that, whole new worlds opened up to me. I feel so incredibly fortunate to be in his continuation.

Very educative. I love his videos. About suffering. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. This is a great thing. But it's very hard to embrace the suffering. There is a lot of it. Lots of crying, lots of fighting the urge to quit, lots of painful memories and fears keep coming up so it's not easy at all. But I hope that I can keep coming back to this video every day and I will be able to heal. So hard omg. We are trained to avoid suffering. I think this is how suicidal thoughts arise. But I really do want to learn the art of suffering. How can we survive without learning this? Pain and suffering is built into the human experience. You would think we'd be able to live with it 🙄.
If you are having a hard time like me, I feel for you. You can and will get through it. Suffering is not forever. I will be okay, and so will you.

I feel you. There are times the suffering seems to be unbearable, even unfair. But the more I fight it the bigger it becomes and the less I am able to fight it. It’s as if it becomes big enough for me to finally rest and accept it. It’s not a flaw, it’s how I feel and it’s okay. There’s no problem with suffering. I am allowed to suffer…
The message that helped me most in this video was that from suffering all the good things arise, when gone trough it.
This message makes it easier for me to let go of my resistance against it.
God bless you, we are all in this together ❤️

The trick i've found is not to think about the reasons for the suffering or anxiety. Not to justify them. Not to "figure out why." Not even to name them - not even to say, "I am sad." Rather, just sit with the buzz or the flush or the rush or the tingle - sit with the sensations of anxiety or sadness (or whatever) as they course through you. Just sit with them, welcome them (again, just focus on the sensation itself, not the reasons for it), and in 10-30 seconds of just unclenching and feeling (and not naming) - the sensations start to change into something else. Just by unclenching, and you start to realize (with a sense of "wow, it's so simple") it was the clenching that was the problem. You see that all of life is this: sensation and your reaction to it, either welcoming and giving it attention or clenching against and thinking about other things.

What you say reminded me of something I stopped saying, because nobody seemed to understand and some even took offense: "My suffering is a luxury." This may sound very strange, but it is how I experience it. Even when I hear myself moaning with pain involuntarily in the bad moments, I can enjoy hearing that at the same time. There was a period of months were I was not able to suffer, even though there often was the same overwhelming pain and there was more discomfort then ever before in my life. I wasn´t just not able to cry, but not able to suffer at all. There was just not enough energy to keep my brain working well enough to keep up any feeling of seperateness. I could walk and talk, but there was truly no I to suffer even though I was more or less conscious the whole time. Hard to imagine now, but it took me three months to even fully realise I was not my bedding or my clothes.. After that I came to every time, so I remember the transition from just sensation to seperate. Many times over, but the first time was weird. Now, 9 months later, I can easily tell where I end and my bed begins, even in the middle of an episode.. And I can see the health, job, family, just all the life I lost and I suffer a lot more because of it and still it is so much better. Whenever it comes I can enjoy it as a sensation, like going on a rollercoaster against your will, it might not be pleasant, but it´s always interesting.. It doesn´t physically feel any better, it may even feel worse, because I take it personally now. But somehow it truly is better, I can enjoy there is a person to take it personally. To experience it as unfair and pout and mope.
And I think because of Thay´s talks.. it´s even become beautiful in a way I don´t fully understand.
When I have an episode my mind keeps going to monks lighting themselves on fire. They do not cry out, they do not thrash. To babies suffering in silence in the birthcanal, to anyone in history or future unable to express suffering, unable to cry. I somehow feel able to suffer for them in a way and maybe making it a little lighter for them somehow and I gladly suffer, then. I like to imagine I suffer for them, the way cells in a body die so other cells can live and keep making up the whole.. I feel connected to them, because my ability to suffer is their ability to suffer.. Maybe I just dedicated my suffering to them, like a poem or a piece of music, maybe it´s just the mind playing tricks to keep going, like Stockholm syndrome, but it is so beautiful. And the more pain, the more beautiful it gets.
I know I will actually miss this a little if there comes a time when it is no longer here. I hope there will be, but I don´t want to ever forget this either. The pain and discomfort comes in waves every few hours and I think I am just reaching the end of a wave and life is getting "normal" again for a few hours, maybe a few days. I also get to enjoy "normal" so deeply now, just walking on the street, looking at people, like this morning, I am doubly blessed at the moment and just can´t stop smiling when things are normal.. Sometimes I laugh out loud, just can´t contain myself.. It´s so hard to take anything serious at times.. Don´t know if it ever will be normal again for longer, but I stopped minding about the insecurity about a month ago, I guess I finally surrendered then.. Stopped waiting and hoping it would disappear.. I enjoy what I have now, that I have now.
In case you are wondering about what it is, so am I.. Nobody knows what it is, something with my brain, that´s basically it. They can see there is brain damage on an MRI, best guess is some kind of stroke... but nothing adds up. We don´t know if it is going to get worse or better or even why I seem to still be getting "better", I´ve gotten so much back, it´s incredible. And it seems more and more unlikely it is a stroke. It´s not something any of my doctors has encountered before, it seems.. Well, me neither. And does it matter..? We have to die some day and we are all on our way, whichever road we take. I just see whatever is left as bonus time and if I get to live another thirty years, I hope I always will..
The recordings of Thay´s talks have been crucial, to stop my agonizing over this, I think. It´s like he made them especially for this kind of thing. Maybe everybody feels that way, when they see him and hear him talk.. I haven´t seen the one about "mindful crying" yet, but I am gonna look for it, thank you!

@@Ludifantmy gosh, I understand. Numbness and complete unconsciousness detachment is worse than suffering. It is the epitome of an indescribable darkness. I much rather cry, feel angry, feel disgust, and all of the unfavorable emotions. I much rather feel anchored to the ground than my mind be sleeping in the clouds in the worst way. We are here, we are tangible, and the feelings are tangible.
This type of detachment usually comes from extreme trauma. But when the body and mind becomes overwhelmed with the physical pain of emotions, it may shut it down completely. There are ways to let the body and mind know that It is okay to come back, and I am working on that aswell. I cried for the first time today in over a year and I felt rejuvenated. I felt like I had come back into myself. All senses felt heightened and I felt like myself. Some people have this way worse than me, but I do believe that I can understand what you mean. It’s hard as a grieving mother - what he says about people running away from suffering is true , and so many people need to avoid me when I am in such pain or shut me down and make me feel like I should be better. Having people be present and witness our pain is a big part of the healing. I’m grateful that there are also ( much fewer ) people who do know how to be present with other’ s suffering. I know the most important person who needs to witness and be present with my suffering is me. Compassion towards myself. Even though I’ve been practicing this being present with my feelings for decades- immediately following the death of my child - I still tried to run from such intense suffering. After breaking bones , and other life threatening accident s , and just time and a few good people and a good therapist- I’m able to be with my suffering- with peace and compassion. Even though I thought I knew how to be a person who had capacity to be with other’s suffering ( in prisons - at hospice etc) this unwanted experience has definitely made me much more capable to be that person that can be there for others . I actually feel compassion for those who are blind to what Thich Nhat Hanh is saying

To answer your question- we don't look for this until we need it. Everyone's different of course - but for most people, life is relatively routine- long stretches of work, some play, rest and repeat. Years go by with no need to look any deeper. But then something happens - a death of a loved one or a chronic illness in yourself - one that WON'T just go away this time. And then, we are suddenly fragile humans again, facing that mysterious empty void and we tremble in fear at the sight of it. That's when we return to seeking deeper truths and try to somehow find our way back home.

I heard that sometimes, when people pass, it is because they can help better from the other side. My sister passed at age 22 (I was 20). I wholeheartedly believe that she has been watching over me ever since. I love Thays teaching so now I ask him to also watch over me from the other side. We have not lost him, as now he can do more outside of the 3D physical rules.

to me (and it's only become apparent over the last year, but really in the last few months)... the answer to suffering is just to will yourself into feeling the sensations of your body at every moment. All the little anxieties - the ones that build up into a constant buzz and make you feel like you're in a constant state of suffering - just in this moment, right now, start to relax the little muscles inside that are clenching against them and FEEL them. Not in an attempt to get them to go away. Just to say, "What's this?" Oddly enough, when you turn your welcoming attention on the sensations of your body, they begin to feel more like expectant energy and hope than the anxiety they were a moment before, but the trick is giving them your attention. Not turning away. Just saying, "Ok, guess I'm feeling this now. Show me, body." And dare yourself to feel as much as you can, not to make it go away, just to give it the attention it's due. And the longer you give your attention to the sensation, relaxing into it, over and over and over, the more you start to flow. Your naming brain quiets, but also the sensations you perceived as anxieties - they change. You begin to act spontaneously. Try it, I dare you :)

Life is suffering. We suffer pain, because we are in the flesh and need to survive. We suffer even before we are aware of what it is when we are in the womb.
The society teaches you to run away and cover the suffering, and this inadvertently can sometimes also cause suffering onto others (those we love and those we don't know) This creates a cycle of suffering among everyone, because today you might be fine but the other people you come across, at least a few of them, are not.

You suffer because you desire. Separate yourself from your thoughts. The real you is timeless, infinite, and strong beyond imagination. To say "I'm suffering" is different then to say "there is suffering inside of me". This separation of yourself and mind is able to be used because of understanding of who you are. Mindfulness of suffering is a practice. Like practicing religion, or building a muscle. Well your mind is a muscle and through the practice of mindfulness you will build barriers or coping mechanisms to help with suffering.

What is amazing about the way he (Thich Nhat Hanh) teaches is that he connect us to Christianity and includes that in... Because in truth and in reality all roads lead to Rome.... He talks about the Kingdom being here and now... and Jesus said: Holy Spirit is always within you... it is all the same except different angles on reminding us who we are! Another thing I appreciate about him is the fact that he has been through war and suffering, and I have too, so I am inspired by him arriving to where he is and teaching peace and enlightenment.

I love what you shared. Thank you, friend. 🙏🏾 It made me think fondly back to a couple of stories…
Just after high school graduation I worked at a Christian summer camp that summer. As part of our counselor training the week before the campers arrived, the pastor had us stand around the A-frame announcement board outside of the mess hall where different events are posted on each of the two flat sides every week. One group stood facing one of the flat sides of the A-frame, and one group stood facing the side of it here a clear “A” could” be seen, but not the flat parts. We had to describe what we saw. We had to convince the other group that what we were looking at was the real answer. Then we had to listen to the other group to understand their perspective, not judging it as right or wrong. “Which of those two activities felt more peaceful”, he asked? “Two different views, and yet both groups looking at the same thing when you zoom out and can see the whole picture.” That stuck with me, even now, 30 years later. So often we are all looking at the same thing, just with different perspectives.
For 16 years I was married to a Jew. We would gather with his family for Jewish holidays and gather with mine for Christian holidays. One time his cousin, a Jewish scholar, stood up to give the blessing before the Passover meal, both Christians and Jews gathered together. H paused, then smiled and said, “A wise scholar once said, ‘Jews believe that the messiah has yet to come, and Christians believe he has come and will come again. So let us sit together and enjoy our time together with one another, and when he gets here we’ll ask him, “So, have you been here before or not?’” It’s funny the little life lessons that stay with us over the years. 🙏🏾💙

I once bought a tire balancing manual apparatus. I had a big conical bell made of metal and had a fabulous long lasting resonance. I became fascinated with that sound and would hit it hard with open window, no doubt neighbors thought they were hallucinating hearing a big bell sound.

I'm very grateful my mama showed me how to be happy in the midst of bad fate and suffering, she is like my shield, she is a human lidocaine. Happiness is in the smallest of things.

I'm glad I never went to plum village people talking in the background is so annoying. Very disrespectful. This is a Great teaching. His final message this is advanced stuff.

Dear John, thank you for mentioning this. Actually, the mumbling is the sound of 7 or 8 translators sitting in the meditation hall (which holds 700-1000 people, depending on the hall) and translating into many different languages, like French, German, Italian, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew etc... Thay wanted them all within eye contact so he didn't get ahead of the translators. This creates a very powerful energy in the hall of so many languages and cultures all together. All the video and sound is done by monastic volunteers (rather than paid professionals) to keep the energy of mindfulness and community, and also because we live simply. Thank you for being able to hear, through the background noise, the depth of Thay's message. You're right that this is one of his most final messages to us all, and it is indeed truly advanced. Thank you for seeing and hearing his message so clearly. A lotus for you, and we wish you all the best with your practice 🙏✨

The suffering that a healthy and able person has, 'Suffering' he (buddhism) is referring to is the MIND. The way we are trapped in our minds and our thinking.
Its a very spiritual idea and practice. I really gosh dam feel for you people who are poor, disabled or dying. I have so much felt pain for you.
But I feel we should remember what Buddhism is about. Its about the spirit. And what that means when we die and go to the next life. Not the suffering we have now.
We have to transcend the suffering we have now.
To go into death with a happy soul.
    Love You.

We dont have to become anything because we have already become it, here we are!! We made it, we are here. We dont have to join anything, we've already joined life, here we are, living!! To be able to see all the beauty there is we have to subtract our concepts and ideas, because all the beauty is before us. Upstairs in our brain department however, it doesent seem to get it because it's too busy, far too busy, and it's this that needs to slow down for us to start feeling connected to ourselves. We need to realize that our brain and us are two different things. We are the ones that control our brain not the other way around. Brain is a tool, but somewhere along the way it has become the master. Heart is still here with us and we need to get connected to it because its where all the good stuff is, its where the human being is, its where conciousness is, its where our real home is.
