- My sister Heather joins us today to share 5 tips for raising bilingual kids. She and her husband are teaching their kids Spanish and English, even though neither of them speak Spanish as a first language. What has helped them succeed at this amazing challenge? Here’s the place to find out! If you have kids and want to start teaching them a second language, or you’re planning to have kids, or you just feel intrigued to know what things help in the learning of a second language, this video is for you. Heather and I first filmed this together but then lost the footage, and that’s why I wasn’t able to make an appearance in this video.

Also, forcing your kids to take a vacation in a country where the only language spoken is the language they are learning! I used to hate speaking Spanish, but my mom sent me to Nicaragua when I was 6 years old to spend the ENTIRE 3 MONTH SUMMER with my grandparents. Omg did that teach me a lesson. I had to survive somehow lol. My Spanish dramatically improved and now I'm so thankful!
That is awesome. That is why I focused so hard on making sure I could get my children to Japan after we started learning Japanese

I don’t know why but it hurts when I hear people say “I HATE SPEAKING SPANISH “ it’s different from not knowing... siempre cuando veo a un prietito gordito con el nopal en la frente, y me contesta en esa forma ... no se me da cosa, me incomoda... Here in sweden its normal to speak 3 languages. I speak swedish, english and spanish and my children will speak those three plus sign language because one of them has a speaking disorder. Language is so important, its our way to comunicate.
Que Te Importa Is it fixed that you learn spanish as a third language or do you have a choice? Here in Germany we (or at least I) can choose between french and latin in 6th grade and later on if we wanted to we could add the other one of those 2 (so latin or french) and (if you wanted to focus on language (instead of science or art) in your 'school career') spanish and russian. And also when do you guys start with english because swedes are known for being really good at english
@@potaatoo8793 well, my parents are from Chile, thats why i can spanish. We learn English in school, its as important as math here. Its kind of a second language since the TV is all in english with swedish subtitels. Now a days even older people speaks english. And also you can choose between french, german and spanish in school if you want to learn as extra.
If I'm a Spanish 21 year old girl and I speak fluent Spanish and almost fluent English, can I learn more languages? I want to learn Italian, German, Swedish, Japanese, French and idk that's it but mostly Italian, Swedish and French (even though my first language is Spanish I watch and listen almost everything in English cause I love it, specially British)

I was raised in a bilingual home, and I wouldn’t want it any other way! I’m so grateful to know 2 languages! I want to learn other languages too. When I have kids, I hope I’m able to succeed in raising them as bilingual or multilingual. Thank you for the helpful tips! :)
I grew up learning 5 languages at the same time. Learn French when I was 12. Now I'm relearning it :)

Im Mexican American, my dad and grandparents are from Mexico but they never taught me spanish. I started learning on my own about 4 years ago and Im making sure my son will be bilingual. Im so lucky to have a Mexican baby sitter who speaks to my son in spanish, hes been with her since he was 4 months old and is now 2 years old and understands so much spanish.

Omg literally exact same. My dad and his side of the family are from Costa Rica y Colombia but my dad is SO lazy he never bothered to teach me Spanish. Now I'm stuck as an adult to teach it to myself and the grammar is very hard. I learned Japanese and Danish (for fun) much more easily. Spanish has been impossible for me to grasp all my life and I always get shamed because I'm not Latino enough, I'm too white, etc.
My mom knows Portuguese but she never teached me Portuguese, I don't want to do the same, if I will have children I will teach them Spanish if my partner speak another language, and if is not, I will teach them English, of course I will improve before have children but I want them be bilingual so I will do my best

In South Africa no one even thinks about it. Almost everyone speaks at least two languages from a young age.
You're so privileged. I live in this gigantic country named Brazil where people only speak Portuguese and nothing else. Just a very small minority speaks English or Spanish as second language. It's so rare to speak a second language here because even in our schools language classes are not taken seriously

@@vejamoxdan Quite similar here in Peru, people from the Andes mountains speak Spanish and Quechua (ancient language), some of them have Spanish as first language, some others, Quechua.
I'm from the coast, so I don't know Quechua but words because my Andean family roots.
Now I'm learning Portuguese too. Definitely, if I have children in the future, I will make my best effort to teach them my language and encourage them to learn more.

As a Chinese person, I envy you so much. You have no idea how hard it is to speak even English when there's almost nobody around me who speaks the language. I learned Japanese through anime, English, through American series and movies. Now I live in Japan and have a Mexican boyfriend. I hope our children will be able to speak Chinese and Spanish at least.

We live in a huge country where just Portuguese is enough to the communication.
Bilingualism is the best. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, so I basically learned English and Spanish at the same time. Because of this, I was also able to learn French and become somewhat fluent before dropping it entirely lol
I'm from Tijuana Mexico and I was raised like that, my mom used to talk to me in English, most of the times because I asked her to, I wanted to be able to communicate with many people since I was always surrounded by Americans. Eventually I learned the language just fine, I'm glad I had my mom helping me and she gave me a tool I didn't know I was gonna use in the future, now I'm an English teacher :)

I’m only 16 so I’m not really thinking about children but have always wondered how you would teach your kids to be bilingual. I’m learning Spanish at school and would love to be fluent some day. This video was really interesting and I really admire the work you put in to give your children the benefits of being bilingual.
I was born in the US and my parents are Brazilian. Portuguese was my first language and I learned English in school. I learned to read and write in Portuguese by myself by reading Brazilian comics. It’s so helpful to learn a language by watching movies, shows, listening to music, and reading. I’m now in Spanish 3 in high school, on my way to learning Spanish, a 3rd language. It’s so great to know Portuguese (lots of Latin) because there are similar Latin languages (Spanish, Italian, etc).
EDIT (1 year later) So after Spanish 3 I took AP Spanish in 12th grade (I just graduated high school). Highly recommend this course if you can take it at high school or at an online high school! The key to learning a language is definitely speaking with others who speak it and watching shows, etc. Recently I had the opportunity to do an interview on a Latin News Channel (Telemundo) about a petition I organized. I had not attended Spanish class in a while (COVID-19) so it was definitely a good way to practice 😆

Dude, how marvellous it should be! I'm brazilian, borned and raised in São Paulo. I didn't get so damn luck like you had. I had to learn english by myself since I haven't bilingual relatives. I also speak spanish and I tottes agree with you. Portuguese and spanish are almost the same, what could be tricky, at the point to look out not to create a dialect, like we have on our board, the "portunhol".
Steph C I'm trying to learn Portuguese and my husband, who is from São Paulo, bought me a bunch of his favorite childhood comics to read. They're fun! I'm happy to know I'm not the only one who has learned / is learning from them. :-)
Danilo Braga my Brazilian husband's little brother (guitarist/singer in Grupo Triii) learned English by watching the sitcom "Friends". 😂 He's actually very good!! Even less of an accent than my husband, and understands a lot of the more subtle jokes and slang Americans like myself tend to use.

I'm a big fan of they and also now, the creator of "monica", had release the same comics in spanish and english. I do as you do, reading it. It's a good way to improve my skills.

Marco Mark Productions This!!! It actually happened with me. My mother was born and raised in Puerto Rico, but my father basically can only speak English. My mother still talked to my brother and I in Spanish, but since we were never forced to speak Spanish (except with her side of the family, but even then, they practiced their English with us which only made us more dependent on English), so we ended up understand Spanish extremely well, but speaking it was so much harder. I was afraid of speaking Spanish for my whole life until we had to move to Puerto Rico in 7th grade because of my grandpa was sick, so we went to school where everyone spoke Spanish. We got used to it eventually (and almost everyone can speak some English, even if it’s just a little), but I was so insecure about my Spanish, and I cried a lot from the stress. It’s been 4 years, and I still get shy about it, hahah. But it’s improved tremendously, I just wish my parents took a better approach.

It was so hard for me to communicate and express my feelings growing up.. my mom ONLY speaks Spanish but I live in the USA (CA) in my elementary school we were not allowed to speak Spanish and I never payed attention in my English class so I wasn’t fluent in any language. I was always frustrated because I didn’t know how to explain how I felt or speak as fluent as I wanted. I was embarrassed to speak Spanish to people who’s first language was Spanish and embarrassed to speak English to people who’s first language was English because I knew I wasn’t fluent & I felt like I would be judged for not being fluent. It was tough. I always preferred and felt more comfortable with English. I took it upon myself to get better at BOTH languages I still struggle with Spanish but At my job I get a lot of Spanish speaking customers so that has helped me a lot. And my boyfriends family only speaks English so communicating with them has also helped me.
Melissa Casillas That’s tough. I’m a music teacher at an American curriculum immersion school in China. I’ve found that my students who struggle with Chinese also struggle more with English.
Wow interesting! I heard that Chinese is the hardest language to learn so once you learn Chinese every other language is easy!
@@chismewithmel9850 Lol not really. I'm Chinese. I can tell you that most Chinese students struggle with English. It's hard to learn any language when nobody around you speaks the language. It was when I dated a Bolivian guy that my English truely improved, because he didn't speak Chinese and I didn't speak Spanish, lol.
Spanish is my first language and English is my second language. I was born in the US but after a while of being a student here my Spanish began to wear off and my parents noticed, they did their part to learn English though it wasn’t perfect they tried. My Spanish definitely improved over the years, my parents definitely had the rule of answer with the language you were spoken with. My dad always got on my case about doubting myself, bc Ik how to speak Spanish I just needed to try a little harder. I’m thankful now that I have my bf, he talks to me in Spanish so much and he helps me remember and add to my vocabulary. Having a support system is great, Ik that if we ever had children Ik he’d be a great help for raising bilingual children.
You go girl, you should do it. It's a beautiful language and think they get the best of both worlds.

I was waiting for this. I'm raising bilingual kids. We live in Mexico and we try to speak English at home and Spanish outside The house. Also my first language is Spanish so I'm doing the same thing but in reverse

That's one of my fears 'cuz my husband doesn't speak English and, if I'm going to teach our future kids, I'm afraid that they don't find on their father the support I'm looking for. Besides, he also likes japonese and I SUCK at it... Basically I can't wait to see how's going to be

I need to get some more phrases so I can say more than just "je ne sais pas" to get them to switch back to Spanish... Actually, though, since the filming of this video, we've all had a lot of fun studying French together too. It's kind of wonderful, because I've wanted to learn French for a long time, and now I have 3 adorable study buddies. The baby fell in love with a French song called "Je Suis Une Pizza", so we're learning all the most important vocabulary right away hahahahah.

I speak italian and spanish fluenty and I am so grateful I have been raised bilingual. when I was born my mom still didn't speak italian so well, so she spoke only in spanish to me . (My dad works all day so we were always together )
So i consider spanish my first language even if i have always lived in italy , because when I was little I couldn't speak italian,just spanish . I have learnt italian when I started school and I keep speaking with my mom in spanish in the house and when I have the opportunity to go to mexico. My spanish hasn't changed and my accent is perfect , I feel lucky for having this opportunity .
I wish my mum did the same with me. I'm also Italian and my mum is half Austrian half Italian, but her mum (Austrian) didn't raise her bilingual. So now, despite the fact that mum did learn Austrian/German very well (she always spent summers in Austria with her Austrian relatives), she never spoke to me in German for fear to teach me sth wrong. That's such a pity. Now I do speak German, but I had to learn it with internships and through Erasmus and oh boy if it was difficult.
I was born in a bilingual island called Mallorca, so I speak Spanish and Catalán. My mom is French so she spoke to me in French when I was little and I started to learn English in school when I was 4 and right know I'm studying in the US so I'm multilingual.

Wow! I'm so happy I came across this video! Thank you! It can be so isolating when so many friends of mine speak both English and Spanish, but aren't teaching their kids to be bilingual. They always ask me how I do it. I'm already doing most of these thing, but am looking forward to incorporating more. It also helps that my husband is on board with me and understands the importance.

I was raised by Chilean parents in Australia, I couldnt be more grateful that my parents only spoke to us in Spanish. I want to raise my children in the same way. I plan to speak to my baby in Spanish. Thanks for this upload, its very helpful.
I'm from Germany and my parents spoke Russian at home. It's so interesting that there's a variety of different methods of raising bilingual children.
In morocco it's normal to speak arabic(or amazigh or rifi) and french(plus spanish in the north) and it's common to speak english as well
I've been talking about this with my husband. We're from Quebec so our first language is French, his "father tongue" and my second language is English and we live in Germany 😅
I'm due in October and, if we're allowed to see people then, the baby will hear all 3 languages from the beginning! I absolutely want the family language to be QC French, my husband will speak English with the baby and outside the house our friends and others will speak German. Can't wait to see how it goes! 😊

She says maman, papa, dada, bye (it's sounds more like ba but you can tell it's supposed to be bye hehe).
We make sure to not use random words from the other languages when we speak, which we often do when we're talking just my husband and I. And we read a lot :)

I’m so grateful for this video, I was giving up with raising my son bilingual due that he doesn’t say any word in English even though he understands it. But this video has encouraged me to keep going on and the tips are really useful. Thank you so much 😊
Music is key! My kids were so reluctant to speaking Spanish even though they understood a vast majority of what I was saying. Speaking it was where they struggled. I was also having issues being consistent because I just wanted them to communicate with me. Listening to only spanish music at home sparked their interest in speaking bc they wanted to know what the words they sung meant. It associated Spanish with happiness and dancing and overall made speaking spanish more fun once it was attached to melody. Everyday they say new phrases and I have been working hard with consistency on my part. Music helps us bridge the gaps. And I'm sure it will work for you too.
I live in the US. I speak Spanish and English thanks to my mom who’s from Costa Rica. My partner speaks English but I plan on raising bilingual children 🥰🙏🏾
I’m from Sweden and I speak Swedish, English and a little bit of German too. When I get kids in the future I really want to teach them English (before they learn it in school), even though it’s not my first language. I think it’ll help them so much in the future! It’s almost necessary to know English today, it’s all over the world. Thank you for a great and informative video!

I was raised in a multilingual environment. We need to know our mother tongue, our national language and ofc English by the time we go to elementary school. Then a fourth language: state language is introduced. So yeah its pretty common here i guess

Hi Heather~ Your experience is so encouraging. I'm pregnant with two amazing boys kicking my belly right now. I'm from Korea, my mother tongue is Korean. And I speak English and mandarin Chinese with my husband who is Taiwanese. We live in Korea, but I don't want to use a language which my husband can't understand quite well. So I decided to speak English! Still a little worried about it because it's not my first language. If I cannot remember simple words like diapers or socks, it might be terrifying. It's a big challenge for me and my husband. I hope my kids can be a fluent multilingual later on. Thanks for nice video. Seems like I'm not alone!

this video is so helpful, thank you! I’m peruvian and I have a niece who is turning 2 in February, she lives with me and I speak english to her since day one. Nobody else at home speaks english so I try to speak as much english as I can every day and she has improved so much! it’s amazing to see how she understands almost everything I say and I can’t way for her to start talking to see if she can actually speak both languages. I’m so excited about this journey!

Love your explanation, so clear and understandable. I’m Dutch and my wife’s Cuban and we’re using the OPOl method and our 18 month your old barely speaks but she understands both languages. Sometimes it’s hard to keep it up but seeing videos like this really helps! Keep up the good work!

Excellent!! I'm teaching my son English, which is my second language. I really appreciate all the tips and advices from Heather. I am alone in the challenge of creating an environment for my son in English. Here in Chile the only language my son hears at school and outside the house is Spanish. It's hard for me to tell how inspiring and supportive this video has been to me. Thank you so much! I'll try to follow all your advices. Some of the things you advice I already do by instinct, so I'm glad to be on the right path and ready to put into practice things like.... being part of an online community so I don't feel alone anymore in this challenge. Im first generation American from a Salvadorian family. I grew up speaking Spanish and English and I’m currently learning French. I hope to learn more languages and maybe in the future teach my kids the same too

My son is 3 years old and can transition to the language they are speaking to him with no problem (although he prefers English). We current live in Argentina, he and his sister were born here... Dutch was my native language but I was always obsessed with America, I taught myself how to talk English, watching UA-cam , english movies and more! Now I’m 12 years old and I live in The Netherlands, my whole family talks Dutch but I can still talk English :)

That’s great! Here’s a quick tip: the verb “to talk” is “speak”, so you would say “I taught myself how to speak English”. You’re English is very good though!

First off... 👏👏👏👏 you both are doing an amazing job! I was born and raised in the USA and Spanish being my first language. I cant say I'm fluent in either languages and that's with me having a learning disability in reading comprehension. Spanish is definitely a language I plan on teaching my children when I have them as well as American Sign language. Jordan, I get how intimidating it could be to speak another language in front of those who are native speakers but your Spanish is REALLY GOOD! if there is one thing I learned throughout my Communication Sciences and Disorders degree it's that you have to take ownership of the language and don't let others make you doubt in your ability. That is honestly the best example you can set your children especially when you are out in public with them. As a teacher, I lead my example... and you both have been doing a good job at doing so too from the looks of things!
Honestly they have great pronunciation with both so you guys are doing a great job as parents, and congrats on your beautiful family and kids !
This is great! I one day want to raise my children to be bilingual. I’ve been starting early and speaking to my dogs only in Spanish. My first language is English and I’m still learning Spanish, but speaking to my dogs really helps my learning. When I don’t know what to say I figure out how to say it. I live in Russia, and the Russian is my first language. I teach my one-and-a-half year daughter English from her birth, despite my proficiency in English is not very high (upper-intermediate at best). And I am very excited with this! I definetely see the results of my efforts and this is very motivating and makes me happy! And it allows me to enhance my own skills as well )) Unfortunately my wife does not speak English but her support is important! And thanks God for UA-cam - classic English nursery rhymes help a lot! Holly thank you so very much for your encouraging videos! speaking from experience in struggling & striving so much for my children to be bilingual; it's always encouraging to see and hear other parents with similar dilemmas. We've also try the one person one language and it works great when alone with a child. We speak the minority language when all of us are together. We've also checked out resources from our libraries and video content and it's definitely helpful to remind the children that are second language isn't imaginary or made up 😂😂.
My kids attend Spanish immersion! I knew it when I was young but you know what they say, if you don't use it lol. Pero yo entiendo mas. So my poor English speaking husband is left out a bit but because I dont speak it I have a hard time getting them to use Spanish at home. So this gave me some encouragement to get back on it. Also the app "Microsoft translate" is amazing. You can speak, write or even take a picture and have it translated appropriately. If you get the paid app you can also use the part to do real time conversation translation.

I loved this video, Heather and Holly! I speak English but have been learning Spanish for the last year, partly for my job and partly to help my daughter. She is in a dual language school where half her day is Spanish immersion, and the other half is English. She and I practice our Spanish together when I pick her up from school and other times as it's convenient, and we are each learning on our own terms as well.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm American living in Mississippi. I have a bachelor's degree in Spanish. I developed a love for Spanish language very young and stayed in Madrid, Spain for 10 weeks in 2012 teaching 2 wonderful kids English while I became fluent in Spanish. I had my first child a few months ago and I'm trying to figure out how to teach him both English and Spanish. This video has definitely helped me develop my own plan. Thank you very much!

Soy Paraguaya, mi país ya es un país bilingüe (hablamos español y guaraní, nuestro idioma indígena) de pequeña viví en Brasil unos años por lo que tuve que aprender también portugués, y desde los 16 trato de aprender inglés, esos idiomas previos me ayudan a comprender que no siempre se puede trasmitir la misma idea perfectamente en otro idioma y también permitió que mi lengua se acostumbre a muchísimos sonidos diferentes que facilitan a que mejore la pronunciación.
Que vérsatilidad la de estos pequeños. Impresionante deveras.

I’m from Guatemala but lived a few years in California when I was younger so I became bilingual from a very early age in my life so now I’m currently 15 weeks pregnant with my first and definitely want my baby to be bilingual but I do realize it will be difficult but I’m determine to succeed lol! Another tip is to listen to songs in Spanish. Jose Luis Orozco, and Whistle Fritz Language Immersion program have great music in Spanish.

Jordan speaks Spanish very well. Don’t be afraid to speak to native speakers. As a learner of the language, I’ve found them to be soo very helpful and amenable to helping us learn. I think you’re both doing a great job! I’m the single other person speaking only Spanish to my grandkids. I love the language and really wish my adult Latin children knew their native language but was frustrated with working all day and coming home trying to teach them Spanish when they were at daycare/school hearing English all day long. I’m trying not to let that happen with my grand babies. Thanks for all the excellent tips!

I'm currently 11 weeks pregnant and always wanted to raise my children to be bi or multi lingual. I am equally fluent in English, Polish, and Vietnamese. The pronunciation of which are widely different so I really want to teach them all 3 languages. However, teaching Polish whilst living in Vietnam could be quite distant for them so I'm now considering reducing to 2 languages: vietnamese and english.

Great video! And it got me reconsider the way I taught my daughter English. My wife and I are native speakers of Mandarin currently living in China, and we also speak (what we consider to be) pretty good English thanks to our studying and working experience in North America. When my daughter was younger, we tried to speak Mandarin and English to her interchangeably. But as soon as she started to speak up, her Mandarin proficiency has skyrocketed, since her grandparents speak Mandarin at home to her all the time when I go to work during the day, and she also attends a Mandarin kindergarten. And it's only natural that as she is turning 5 years old now, she has a growing preference to communicate increasingly complicated ideas in Mandarin, and her English is still very insufficient for the increasingly sophisticated communicational and emotional needs at her current age. This makes it a lot harder for us to adopt the 'minority language at home' or the 'one parent one language' rules than it would have been, had we started at her early age and stuck to it. We might have to accept the fact that we'll need to teach her English in the traditional learning method for typical second - language learners...
