Hey beautiful people, I forgot to mention the actual protocol of the Wim Hof Method for those who need a reminder:
    30-40 powerful inhales (hyperventilation-like breathing)
Breath retention on the exhale (empty lungs)
Recovery inhale and hold for 15 sec (full lungs)
Repeat for 4 to 5 rounds
PS: Don't forget to sign up for my newsletter to be ready when my short guided breathwork course launches 😉

Breath retention after a passive exhale. Wim insists on not forcefully exhaling completely before the breath retention. So, after the 30th inhale, let your lungs empty naturally, without forcing. Also, counting is there just to give us a reference, for our analytical minds. We should not fight the urge to breathe, but should allow the gradual and natural increase in lung capacity lead us. Patience and regular practice are the path leading to safe results.

i found that i was just going straight for the cold water to get a stronger effect in the water, effect i mean calmness of mind and focus, as long as my hands or feet dont hurt. my body wants the water when i look at it. when i talk about it most people stare at me in horror and dont say anything. i want to get back into horse stance , was doing alot in the beginning, breathing exercise an hour or so before water, but i still get cold, back to basics as they say

Thought this guy was saying ‘breast work’ for the first 5 minutes 🫠
I’m only around a month into the breathing and cold showers. I’ve noticed I’m way more chilled out now and my emotions are always positive. I’m really focused too. My Mrs gets angry and upset about little, pointless issues and I’m immune to the negativity now. She wants someone to hate life with her but I’m too busy feeling fucking awesome!
We have a 6 month old baby so don’t always get a chance to do my breathing in the morning and once I’ve eaten I feel like the opportunity has gone then but I think I’ve only missed 3 days so far. I’m still always positive and breathe deep throughout the day.
My cold showers are up to 2 minutes now and after the first few seconds I’m totally relaxed and smiling. I think I need to fill the bath in the morning and have my first dip. I’m excited.
Take care boiz and gurlz. All the love, all the power

This knowledge is already deep inside us all. My experiences with good Ketamine sent me into auto pranayama breathing like a Wizard. Very advanced techniques came to me on autopilot.
I ended up having a full blown Kundalini awakening by keeping myself clean for a few months and then having a micro bump of Ketamine and a glass of red wine.
I went into auto pilot chanting and pranayamas… A 90 minute explosive experience beyond belief ending in Alien rebirth and a massive release of Nectar of the Gods from my Brain…
Now that stuff was the real deal when I swallowed it.

I have Graves disease and am using natural therapies to reduce my symptoms and inflammation. I'm in a flare right now and have very bad air hunger and asthma symptoms have been starting up. I'm only able to hold the breath 30 seconds and that's extremely hard. Before the flare I could make it to 50 seconds and a minute after several rounds but never went over 60 seconds. Thanks for the strategies. Even at only 30 seconds my heart rate goes down some. I will keep trying.

I am sad to hear you have Graves but great to hear you are in the natural therapies already :)
Try and look into plant based diet and supplements especially higher doses of vitamin D as D is an immune modulator and tissue and DNA repair five star general.
Also you might check Izabella Wentz who deals with thyroid related issues. I've read her book just as a natural progression of my cancer research and was able to
help few of my friends who had Hashimotto just based on the book. One of the gold nuggets was that everybody with thyroid issues have problems with leaky gut which gets the non digested proteins, bacteria etc to end up in the bloodstream triggering a molecular mimicry mechanism where the body attacks the invader and itself because something on the invaders cell surface is similar to the thyroid gland and as immune system attacks the invader it also attacks the thyroid...
So, few strategies to be applied to heal the gut such as diet (no gluten, no dairy, no pork as it has a bacteria that can trigger mimicry autoimmunity, go strong on the plants), supplements, intermittent fasting, meditation, breathing and reboot the immune system so healing can start, Pharmacological solutions don't do the healing unfortunately.
I hope some of this make sense and that I tickled your imagination :)

    • @KitaroWaga
      @KitaroWaga  Рік тому

It doesn't really matter. I mean, it's not a competition or anything. Longer breath holds can lead to better CO2 tolerance which improves your fitness and there is a hormetic effect with longer holds as your O2 (oxygen) in your blood drops below a certain level. This can have various health effects from better O2 intake, to more white blood cells and therefore a better immune system and also mental benefits.

So James Nestor claims that it’s always best to breathe through your nose due to all the complex structures in our nasal cavity that help optimize/pressurize air quality. Is there something about this exercise that requires mouth breathing? Genuinely curious.

    • @KitaroWaga
      @KitaroWaga  Рік тому

In general, breathe through the nose. But for a breathwork session you can make it more intense and experience better effects if you breathe through the mouse. Or in other words, as a beginner it's more difficult to engage in rapid and full breathing through the nose. But it's still possible.

    • @KitaroWaga

No it is quite common. Doing the fast paced deep inhales raise the arousal level of the sympathetic nervous system (similar to hyperventilation). So, it’s very logical why it can cause a panic attack in some people. There are a few ways to counter that:
      1. Take 5-15 minutes to do deep but slow breathing (longer exhales than inhales) to relax before doing the Wim Hof breathing.
      2. When doing the WHM breathing, start slow and progress accordingly.
      3. Inhale through the nose.
      4. Do the cold shower / cold exposure first.
      Hope this helps.

Excellent video! Thank you! One item I'd like clarity on is how "far" to exhale for the repetitive breaths and also for the final exhale before the breath hold/retention. I recall Wim Hof saying in a video to not exhale all the way (don't completely empty the lungs) but exhale just to the point where there's equal pressure outside and inside (there's still a little bit of air in the lungs). Thanks for any deeper explanation of this part of the method!

I do 30-40 breathes and extend the hold during the rounds.
First round is 2:00 min, increasing by 15 sec for each progressive breath hold.
I know when I have got it right - as the feeling of that tingling sensation, flushing through my body, from head to toes, is amazing!
And cold shower for 58 days now.
Some days are worse than others - i have egiotten to the point that as I'm arguing with myself, about how nice & warm it is - I switch to cold water only.

Biomechanically some peoples ribcage and mechanics around breathing are either stuck in an inhale or stuck in an exhale so telling someone who is stuck in an inhale to breath in more is going to exacerbate that dysfunction

Hey John, thanks for adding some context. In my experience coaching people in person is that the majority of them have too much tension or lack thoracic and scapula mobility. But I agree that there are persons who have other dysfunctions that won't allow them to use the rib cage for breathing fuller.

Yes, it's not for everyone. That said, you can build up cold tolerance. And I also have a very low body fat percentage (around 10%). Vasoconstriction (how well your skin shields you from the cold) and thermogenesis (heat/energy generation) through brown adipose tissue (brown fat) and intercostal muscles are far more potent indicators than body fat percentage. I have a video where I go deep on Cold Therapy. Maybe you want to check it out.

Wow! This is really a game changer! I realized that I was doing my breathwork somewhat mechanically. Now I have been practicing it very mindfully for a few days and it became very different. I tune every breath to that particular moment. Sometimes I go slow, sometimes fast. Sometimes nose, sometimes mouth. I go not just by instruction, but by feeling. I listen to my body and mind and adjust accordingly. The experience is probably not as intense as it was in the beginning of my practice, but it's still very good. I am doing it now with curiosity, I dive fully into it. I feel like there is a room for improvement and I want to explore.
Thank you so much for giving new life to my(and probably many other people's) breathing practice! 😊
Everyone who feels that he/she is doing it wrong or that it doesn't work, please, just keep practicing! You have to master it, it's a long time affair. Listen to your feelings, apply advice from this or some other video, take a class with instructor(if it's possible for you).
And don't worry, don't stress yourself. You are doing it to minimize stress, not to amplify it. It's ok to make mistakes, if you acknowledge and correct them.
    Keep going!

Great, great explanations and information. Thank you, Kitaro! I started daily breathing when Covid hit and have done it every day for about 4 yrs. I’ve had the usual immune system improvements - almost no colds, all allergy symptoms went away, etc. But the most notable impact was with my meditation. It helped to open up my internal energy, which now flows with greater ease and control. This really is amazing. Each day, it does take some will to do it though - it’s strenuous and while it’s partly relaxing, it’s also partly unpleasant. I can imagine beginners failing to stick with it due to the effort and will required to make it a daily routine. But to me, it’s worth it. I have noticed that my breath holds have definitely plateaued. Maybe it’s my age of 51, but I typically max out at about 90 secs on my last hold. I think I need to put more effort into relaxing my body and easing in, as you explained. But it’s tough when time is rather limited, depending on the day.
Thank you again, you are a real inspiration.

I first tried Win Hof method breathing in January of this year, but it didn't become a true daily practice until about 3 months ago, and I have hardly skipped any days since then. A bit over 2 months ago I started introducing the cold showers, and it has now been just shy of 2 months since I last took even a lukewarm shower, I just open the cold water and nothing else for my entire shower, and I can't stress how much this plays a part in all of this. In those 3 months my wife and daughter have gotten sick several times, I haven't gotten even the hint of a sniffle. Even some of my allergies seem to have subsided.
I haven't done the full ice-water Immersion yet, but that would obviously be the next step.
I know (and fully respect, as everyone MUST) the rule of never doing this in water. But the past me that did freediving misses breath-holding underwater so much now, and every time I do the retentions I am reminded a bit of that time.
