Yes figs are the best. We grow the Desert King at our mini farm in Washington about an hour north of Seattle. When we move to Hawaii this spring, I want to try them there. They seem to withstand Washington rain just fine.
Thanks for all the videos!! I'm learning a ton of useful information. My wife and I recently bought a townhouse in Waikaloa Beach. We'll be renting it until we retire in about 12 years. In the meantime I'll be looking to buy a farm east of Waimea. Will start an orchard -slowly because I'll only be able to tend to it about 4 times per year until we move there full time. The places I'm looking get 70-90 inches of rain/year which is probably less than what you get.No particular questions for you, just many warm thanks. You are inspiring!
Hello do you guys do private tours or tours at all? We are coming to the Big island in September and would love to see such an amazing garden in real life plus try all the awesome fruit 😊
Yeah we do that randomly when people come over for cuttings. Send us an email closer to the day and we can try to work something out. Will ask for a donation for our time. Aloha 🤙🏾
Wow! Lots of progress since I visited you guys with Marsha. I postponed my move since the economy is sketchy right now. Maybe I can stop back by in a few years. - Andy
Yes to the broader overview of your property and how your efforts have paid off. Show off your success! Do you have any Before/After arial shots to highlight the transformation?
Ha ha! we were trying to figure out if your little avocado tree was putting on a starfruit or if you shoved the starfruit in there but upon further viewing later in the video it's obvious that you were just trying to save a starfruit for later :) lol
Would be great to know how you start planning out the orchard and what elements you consider landscape wise when you're designing in the tropics/higher rainfall areas :) Thanks!
Hi you guys, everything looks so good and flourishing so well, are you able to get fruit all year round or do they have a dormant period, since you don't have a winter season and if so is that hard on the trees not getting a rest period from producing, thank you guys for the update, greatly appreciated
Majority of the fruit trees have a fruiting season, very variable depending on the species. The fruits that will produce year round for us are papayas and bananas at the moment. Our starfruit is fall/early winter and lilikoi fruits in spring and fall (and still producing) so it takes a little break in between seasons. Coconuts will also produce year round but we don't have any grown ones yet :) hope that helps.
Good to c a tour of your place from u two. Place is looking very nice. Yep you two have gotten a little meatier (I mean that as a compliment) I gotta get back on working out a little....next time we are there, we should do that zip🌈🤙
That's funny about the papaya. When I was in St Croix, we explored around an abandoned property that had a half built concrete house at the top of a hill, and there was a completely untended papaya tree next to it that was just loaded with fruit. Seemed to do really well there. Maybe the good drainage and cleared lot with lots of sun was the difference.
@@OffGridHawaii you seems pretty knowledgeable about all this stuff, but just in case you hadn't looked into it, I found this last night and it was pretty interesting. www.tropicalpermaculture.com/growing-papaya.html Lots of sun, lots of water, good drainage to avoid rot, and lots of nutrients.
The Kuini variety of Mango is supposed to be a wet weather mango. I picked one up at the BIAN plant sale in Hilo last year and am giving it a try in Hawaiian Acres. I also bought some seedlings from Bill Merril (greengardenguy1) on UA-cam that are supposed to be Indonesian wet mangos but I have yet to get them on the ground. Bill has a nursery on South Kopua road that you drive past if you go to Musa Marvin's banana plantation. Bill has a selection of plants I've seen nowhere else. As to your figs not getting sweet, that is due to the temperature, the hotter it is during ripening the sweeter they will be - to a limit.
Mahalo for the comment! I picked up 3 of bills “rain proof mangoes” a while ago, one for rose, one for freebird, and one for me. Hope they are what he claims them to be 🤞🏽.
I enjoyed this video very much. I love updates. I've recently taken an interest in chili peppers. Are there chili pepper varieties that are specific to Hawaii? Do y'all ever use peppers in you food? Thank you for the update. Take care and Happy Holidays.
Here is a suggestion for a video topic, rain. I see that there are places where it can rain up to or greater than 200 inches per year in the big island especially in the wet tropic climate zones like where you are. Can you talk about how much and how long it rains each day? Seasonal variations? Pro and cons? I know that you cannot tell us how it is everywhere on the Big Island concerning rain but I am interested to hear a snapshot of how you have experienced it. I know that you collect rain water, so do you filter rain water to drink or use other water for drinking water?
@@OffGridHawaii Since I wrote that comment I found the Rainfall Atlas of Hawaii. You may want to include a link to it in the description of the video. rainfall.geography.hawaii.edu/interactivemap.html
East side of the island is rainy from maybe 80 to 240 inches. This year we got 244 inches but to be honest it mostly gets the rain out of the way at nighttime and is usually sunny or overcast until the next evening.
That's impressive, very nice work, you should be proud! If you don't mind sharing, can you describe where specifically your property is located, there are many different areas in Puna/Pahoa, would be good for you to share specifically where you are located, where you would buy land now if $ was not a primary concern, how many acres you'd buy next, what you'd do differently, etc. Thanks!!!
Oh yes, very nice, I'm a big Hilo fan and have visited tons of times, this history of the sugar canes makes this area even more special. Take care and thanks again for all your hard work sharing! Happy Holidays!
It’s unfortunate that the ‘Ma’afala’ is promoted as the best breadfruit free to grow, because although the compact formation is ideal for the species, the fruit are small and not as tender when compared to say ‘ulu fiti’. Good call on picking up the ‘emperor’ lychee which produces beautiful fruit. It only fruits bi-annually unfortunately. Do you have a fence around your border? I have a 4 year old orchard above Pahoa... 101 fruit trees(not including banana or papaya) and counting... your garden looks great! I’d love to connect!
It would be great to know rough startup costs for the fruit orchard you are planning. And I definitely second the comment about how to plan according to your landscape/drainage/moisture/sun, etc. That is an amazing place you have. Thank you so much for sharing.
You also mentioned that mango does not do well because it is too rainy where you are and that the figs aren't doing the best. Which plants would do poorly if you were on another part of the island?
Good questions, these can be addressed in the video. We have a video about the costs that we made a while back. It's called something like "how much does it cost". We cover all the expenses for the fruit orchard part of our property.
