Eddy’s Food Forest Tour | Planting on Unripped Lava
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2019
- Aloha everyone!
In this video we visit our friend Eddy’s Food Forest. Eddy has been working on his food forest for about 7 years and has done all the work by hand (no dozers or heavy machinery). The lava on Eddy’s land is so uneven he can't even use a wheel barrow to spread materials. Soil, cinder and other materials had to be moved using 5 gallon buckets. By not ripping the land he has preserved the natural beauty of the lava flow that is just 6 inches below the soil. Some of the features Eddy found are - a natural lava staircase, lava pond, beautiful big cracks in the lava, rope pahoehoe lava, and even some lava tree molds! Hope you enjoy!

I like this kane. He knew he was coming here to Hawaii so he was respectful and kept that in mind with how he was going to work with Pele. He definitely hana lima and cultivates with that ethic in mind.
This is my best friend from elementary and high school!! THIS IS SO COOL TO SEE!!! HEY EDDY!!
Patience and observation, getting to know the land, is very key first step, as Eddy says. Spending time simply camping out and exploring. An important piece he does not mention, and most Permaculture folks seem to skip, is Be Open To Change. Your initial designs and builds may not work out. Be willing to change your plans as your experience, and needs change over time. The first 'house' you setup may not be where you really want it after 2 years of living with it and the land. All things change, including "permanent" agricultural features.
it seems to be a common trait when homesteading that everything is always in flux. I've started multiple buildings on land in New Mexico and realized, "Oh wait.. I don't want that there, that's right where the garden should be" or "my front door opens into a lake"
Right! Watch the sun, how it drains, totally feel it.
I'm super grateful for this video! We are closing on 3 acres in Hawaiian Acres in 2 weeks and I'm stoked! Glad I found this video to show my partner. Thanks guys🙏 hope to see you around 😀
Eddie's place is perfection. I really enjoyed the tour.
Thanks for watching Joe, happy to hear you enjoyed this as much as we did! 🤙🏽
Miss yall videos.
Great two contrasting videos, between this one and the last. Thanks for sharing Eddie’s place.
Super proud of Eddy. Excellent video. Great use of WOOFers too. ;-)
🐶
Thanks for sharing Eddie!
I've enjoyed watching your You Tube channel. I've bought a small lot in Black Sand Beach community. About 5 to 7 miles south of Pahoa off the 130hwy on Upper Puna Rd. It's virgin land like Eddie's here. Thanks for making this video. This is giving me some great ideals about what I maybe able to do with my lot. I also made the big mistake of buying sight unseen. I've always be good with working with what I've got to work with. This was uplifting for me see people doing the same thing that I'm planning to do when I get there. I'm planning on making a medicine farm and my own personal food garden. I saw that Eddie had a Tea Tree growing and I was wondering how do herbs do in a tropical forest. I grew up in a subtropical climate and could grow just about anything there. I've been living in Las Vegas for over 18 years and had to learn to garden over again because of how hot and dry it is here. Will it be the same for me when I move to even a very wet climate? Will I have to learn how to garden all over again?
Awesome video!
This is so inspiring
This guy is so cool. That property is so natural gorgeous.
I like the shared vibes between you guys. New friends are a blessing.
This is a dream come true!! So proud of you my friend!!
Great video! I can't wait to get over there. I like the half and half idea with getting the drive way and house area maybe leveled, and leaving the rest natural if you can.
Great video
Thanks for sharing. Very beautiful property.!
Indeed! 🌅💙
Eddie’s place is so beautiful, and I love the advice: patience, and get a dog! Thank you for sharing this one.
I think I might have found something cool to uncover at your place in the back😁
OffGridHawaii a large bag of gold to start my build? What did you find?!

Nice farm!
Big up Eddy. You da man!
Love the budding bronance
Niiiiceee. Thanks for the tour🌈😃🤙
Thanks for watching! 🤙🏽🌋
Great video. Very inspiring I kind of want to do what you guys are doing, Rip a driveway and a place for the house / water catchment and then use the existing landscape as a pallet for an experimental Hobby farm
That was beautiful 💕 love how you observe the ‘āina and allow for her to accept you
So glad i watched this one, and nice one Eddie your garden looks sweet asf bro!
Thanks for the comment! 🤙🏽
Unreal and Awesome video you two. I love what he's envisioned and accomplished...Truly Paradise :)

Great video! I hail from Waikaloa....very different from Puna...I admire your strength & determination
Hi I live in Keaau, I've been here since 2012 but I haven't really lived here. I'm really digging what your channel is about. You two do great work.

Exactly Eddy good advice, check it out before you buy! Eddy is fine too :)
Hey off grid Hawaii! I think I might be coming to the big Island in March to look at land… I wonder if I could stop by yawls place and take a look. I love the idea of off grid living but I know it takes a hell of lotta work. Do you think it would be possible to come by and asked some questions…Also does Eddie have a contact so I could ask him some questions as well? I love your videos thanks
Love the perspective of going with the flow of the land. Y’all should follow up with how he built his place.
Yeah it really came out so beautiful! We are not going to film Eddy’s house but it’s pretty neat :)
mahalo eddie for opening ur lot for us

That is a beautiful garden and you are all too sweet
Hugelkultur !!! yeah baby! love Jess n Jim over at "The Green Dream Project"
Mahalo! 🤙🏽😁
Would you guys consider doing a greenhouse? Could collect rain off that to water plants inside 🍅
Aloha , What a beautiful place. What is his elevation ? Mahalo for sharing .
Aloha, indeed it is beautiful. I think it’s somewhere between 800-1000ft
New to the island and would love to learn from this artist…
2021 update request!
I enjoy your videos so much. Now I must weed .... it just rained. Have a good night
We need a new video please!!!!!!!!!!! Love you guys.
It's coming along soon.... Hopefully by the end of the month 🙃😁🤙
Are you folks still in contact with Eddy? Wonder what his food forest looks like today. Mahalo!
Haven’t seen his place since that video we made but I bet it’s looking cherry 🍒
How close was this last lava flow to Eddy's place?
🤔 15 miles maybe 🤔
Great tour guys! Do you have an idea of a typical/avg cost to rip and clear an avg size house pad and drive way?
Thanks! The going rate is 9-12k per acre.
Cool. I've been enjoying your videos for a while and thinking about buying a lot in the H. Acres area one day and may need your help with the improvements :) then. Take care!
When your scrolling through UA-cam and you see your friend Eddie on a thumbnail. =O
I feel like at least half of the population knows Eddy lol he's a good man and a super cool dude 😎
@@OffGridHawaii good man indeed
Aloha, just stumbled on your channel and love it. I’ll have to binge all the vids. Awesome attitudes and filming! I live Maui if you ever visit and need anything let me know. 🤙
Aw thank you! 🤙😎
My name mike too and the BMX nice skills bro, only been big island for 3 days it was awesome.... Aloha and Mahalo for your vids/lifestyle.
Does Eddie have any sugarcane for sale? I'd like to buy some to start growing my own. Mahalo.
OffGridHawaii, I think I'd like to buy some more Tongan Spinach starts from you as well.
Thanks, send us an email aloha.offgridhawaii@gmail.com and we could set something up.
My husband saw you at the transfer station a couple of days ago. He said you were talking to the compost guy. The plants that you listed for sale back in September, do you have any more of those? (Cacao, Rollinia, Black Sapote)
Yes send us an email
Val Mobley, LOVE that you are all sharing in starting new plants! I sent some purple potato’s with my son to start all the way to Poland from NM!
Best to identify invasive plant species first. Remove them before needlessly getting rid of the native plants. Native plants grow way slower than the invasives. Uluhe is native fern. It's still important for the environment.
1:03 LMAO
Qué gatito tan hermoso lo quiero dénmelo para mi
How long has Eddie lived on the land to acquir over 100 trees.
I think he has been there around 7 years.
You think a ibc bio digester will work in the big island
We don’t have any experience using one but it should work 🤔
tea tree? as in tea tree oil?
Yup
So do you have any older Mangosteen starts that you are willing to barter/sell?
We only have two and they are about an inch tall 😝
Oh well. How close to Hawaiian acres are you? Our house is on the Moho.
Not too far 😊
You guys still in Volcano?
We are still Puna but we don’t live in volcano 🌋
Thanks for replying. I’m from Oahu, never been to that area but getting ready to buy one of the those lots on Ohialani. I appreciate the info here. Hopefully we can link up sometime! Aloha no 💙🤙🏽
Wow!!! Eddy is Hot!!!! Have him on your channel more!!!
🔥🔥🔥 Lol we'll make more videos with Eddy soon
I agree 😍
I saw an old video about not having P O Boxes and though I'd repost this here.
Had the same problem getting a PO Box on St John in the US Virgin
Islands. Got on the waiting list for over 5 years and still nothing. I
went onto @t,
went to the "get a PO box section, I put in the zip code of the post
office i wanted a box in and there was some!!!! I paid for it with a
credit card online and the PO tried to tell me there weren't any. I
told them " I paid for one, how do I get a refund" and their lies that
they didn't have any was exposed. I got my box. The agent told me not
to tell others about this. The people in the local office might be
holding them for their friends and familly. Don't let them get away
with it. Get your boxes on line not in person.
Thanks for the input! Good to know, and could be true here too. We finally got a box though just the other day! After waiting over 2 years... 😅
any snakes?
No snakes
Generally speaking... This is the guy that your girl told you not to worry about, when she's "planting white pineapple"
😂😂 she needs to worry about me planting them white pineapples. #bromance
OffGridHawaii Love the channel ⚡️🌈💦
Does Eddie have an Instagram or UA-cam channel? Would love to connect with both of you guys!! Aloha 🤙
Aloha! He doesn’t have UA-cam as far as I’m concerned but he has an Instagram. Idk if it’s public though 🤔
12 minute advertisement to watch this? What is going on with UA-cam?
Wow what was the ad about? At least you’re able to skip them 🤙🏾😅
Michael Paulina Eddie hypothetical question is 50 Grand in pocket for the land what would be your area of choice, Hawaiian Paradise Park, orchidland, Hawaiian Acres, or UpCountry Mountain View Fern Acres , volcano? maybe difficult question but your two top choices would be________? guess we have to change or 3-month stay for a Year's stay for research Paul n Jill
All of those places are nice. They are all different though so you’ll have to see what you prefer. Sorry didn’t exactly answer your question but it’s all personal preference.
@@OffGridHawaiiis right. The different subdivisions have different sized Lots. Spaghetti Lots. Lasagna Lots LOL. We just bought in Fern Acres, 2 acre lots, but all the roads are paved. And we got a nicely wooded property that butts up against state and federal Forest Reserve so we are happy. But like they say, they are all somewhat the same, except some get more rain than others. The closer to volcano you get the more rain you get.
Paul Torres Each subdivision has a different feel, different sized lots, etc. I guess there is always risk...but Look at the HOAs (financial stability)and see how each one is compared to the other..ask yourself what do I not want or do want...privacy...soil....rain...sun...public water...volcanoes zone vs cost of insurance...or off grid completely...Close to town or secluded....🌈😃🤙
It is really important to visit, to drive there after heavy rain so you know where you are ok vs where it always flood and you would be unable to drive out of your property. There are maps of flooding zone and lava zone to look. Also, see the neighborhood is really important. Your neighbors are going to have a big impact on your quality of life and feeling of safety, especially if they are closer like on the spaghetti lots. We were sooooo lucky with our land and neighbors, but it's also because we made a lot of research. I would say the 3 months you planned are enough if you know this is the kind of life that you want. Aloha !
@@guillaumebeaudet5334 I have been told that it's best to go in April when the most rain comes and stay for a couple weeks, this is after we bought our property, but we can't just throw a house anywhere, we have to put it where there is good drainage so this is an awesome post.
She is the cutest dorky chick ever.
She's intentionally silly sometimes, but I would never call her dorky! Very cute though!
🤓 hahahah very intentionally dorky too. Mahalo for the compliment 🤙🏽
