  • TV for dogs! Your dog will love watching these adoptable shelter dogs socializing and playing. Better than music for dogs, this engages your dog as they watch complex dog interactions, the body language, the play bows, chasing, and wrestling. It's educational and fun for your dog.
    Designed to avoid overstimulating your dog, but check how your dog reacts before leaving the video running (don't show this video to dogs that over-react).
    Your views provide thousands of dollars of funding for these animal shelter dogs! If you're looking to adopt one of these dogs (located in 🌵Tucson, Arizona USA 🌵), see the link below:

      The staff and volunteers do amazing work and many of them get very emotional when dogs go downhill over time. For me the toughest thing is when a playgroup regular starts to have behavior issues that prevent them from attending playgroups. Luckily that's a very rare thing.

    My digs watch this a bit each day. I’ve been house restricted from surgery so they only get one walk a day after hubby gets home at night. Also dog flu keeps them from the dog park and play groups.
    I hope this is entertaining and not depressing for them. Lol. They’re both hard rescues with shelter memories and love love love dog park play.
    If they’re so afraid of communal water set out water bottles for each dog. This is abusive bs for a shelter. These dogs are super underweight too.
    Not your fault as a shelter for a country with no breeding restrictions or pet ownership accountability.
    I’ve personally witnessed higher neglect in high profit rescues so you’re at least trying and I truly hope for each one of these fluffs to find happiness and safety with forever homes.

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  10 місяців тому

      The problem is that water bottles become resources and dogs can fight over them. During evaluations, the helper dogs need to stay in the play yard for a long time, so they have individual buckets for them in the side yard so they can each drink water often without resource guarding issues. In these regular playgroups we try to avoid keeping them in the yard for too long, although you can see some of them are there for quite a while.

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  10 місяців тому +11

      Yeah, I'm in complete and total agreement that these dogs need water and I believe the other people you see in the videos would agree. The lead veterinarian won't allow common water due to disease outbreaks that have been happening, although the dogs slobber all over each other in playgroup. At times I've let dogs drink from the hose (off camera).
      I'm not the expert, but I know that stress increases the likelihood of a dog getting sick and it seems to me that dehydration adds more stress to the shelter dogs that are already very stressed. I suppose the question becomes whether the stress caused by dehydration is worse than the de-stressing (most) dogs get from being in the playgroup. But I think an even better question is how much more does common water add to spreading disease than simply being in the playgroup itself. Not to mention wondering how bad these dogs feel being in the yard without water.

      @@robertdadabo9076 No one would forget that. It's agonizing to us to not be allowed to have water in the yard. When I'm running dogs back and forth I'll watch to see if they make a dash for the water and drink like they're thirsty. Believe it or not, most of them don't. I'd say they're just as likely to do that after a typical walk (dogs either walk for about 15 minutes or go to playgroup).
      I keep asking if we can bring the pools back, but the vet still won't allow it.

      @@DogPlaygroupStories Surely if there was that much risk of outbreaks of disease being spread, slobbering all over each other, playing in close contact, panting over each other will be at *least* as risky. I can't see much more risk in a large half barrel of fresh water diluting pathogens and being emptied a couple times a day, as being more risk than usual. Veterinarians are not always correct about everything.
      I'd love there to be a paddling pool. Hot dogs are stressed dogs and stressed dogs are more likely to be short tempered leading to aggression.

    Seen so many episodes now, and NO water?! And some of these dog handlers are way to rough with the dogs, pulling there leashes (wonder how some of them treat the dogs when camera is off). This is not me trying to be harsh, but dogs deserve to be treated with respect. Please keep in mind, we are people watching this

    • @DogPlaygroupStories

      Today they finally allowed water in the play yard! I recorded today's playgroup, so finally we'll see the dogs with water in the next video. When I run dogs to and from playgroup I keep track of whether they make a mad dash for the water when they get back to their kennel. Most of them actually didn't. But I wasn't happy that we weren't allowed to give them water in the playgroup yard.
      All the people are actually treating the dogs well and with respect. We've gone through extensive training with a team from Dogs Playing for Life, who are world class experts in working with groups of dogs. I see this team working with the dogs off-camera when we're running dogs back and forth to the play yard and doing other work with them. What you see might seem harsh, but then when you see dogs playing they're just as harsh or worse with each other. Sometimes you might see a handler use a squirt bottle a bit more aggressively than ideal, where you start by spraying in front of them, then spray their paws, then legs, then eventually their face, then break out the shake can, giant shake jug, air horn, bite stick. If someone is actually being mean to a dog, they will be reprimanded by just about everyone else. There are some very badly behaved dogs in the shelter and they are handled by following the procedures. I've never seen a staff member or volunteer mistreating a dog.

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  10 місяців тому

      I would even add that if any staff or volunteer did anything even mildly abusive to a dog, no matter what that dog is doing, they might be fired/banned. I've seen a lot of very stressful (sometimes very frightening) situations with staff and volunteers and I've never seen an abusive response from anyone.

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  Місяць тому

      This was during a very serious disease outbreak and the lead veterinarian made the difficult decision to continue with playgroups since they lowered dogs' stress level, making them less susceptible. But we had to remove the common water which could easily spread the disease very quickly. None of us were happy about it, but it was actually best for the dogs. We monitored them for symptoms of dehydration and avoided leaving them in the yard for a long time. And we held the playgroups in the early morning before it got too hot.
      The lead veterinarian at the shelter works with other shelters to determine the best practices among animal shelters.

    what does the color system mean?

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  4 місяці тому

      I assume you mean the dot colors. Most shelters use a color system to identify how difficult a dog is to walk. Volunteer dog walkers start out at the easiest and work their way up the ladder. Different shelters use somewhat different schemes. At Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson, Arizona USA it's this:
      Green: Super easy, the dog knows the routine and will walk with the walker.
      Blue: Easy, but don't drop the leash or the dog will run away.
      Pink: Strong pulling dog or has mild issues to watch out for. Doesn't require special equipment or procedures.
      Orange: Requires special equipment or procedures. If you don't follow the procedures, you *will* regret it. Walkers must be walking lots of dogs on a regular basis.
      Purple: Very difficult to walk. Walkers must be experts in handling dogs and have a fairly high level of commitment to doing a lot of dog handling and dealing with overall shelter issues.
      Red: Staff only, no volunteers. This can be for various reasons.
      I walked dogs for two years and reached the orange dot level, although I generally didn't walk dogs with the potential to re-direct: dogs that will bite you if they get too excited about something else. I stopped walking dogs because the video work was getting overwhelming and dog walking at a shelter is actually strenuous and stressful, mostly getting dogs into and out of the kennel.

    The loose dragging leashes hurts me OCD 😂 they gettin really soiled, there is a company that makes all in one collar/retractable leash, those would definitely keep them outa the urine/fecus🤢🤮

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  5 місяців тому +1

      I wish viewers didn't have to see them, but based on experience with thousands of shelter dogs and the advice from the people who pioneered shelter dog playgroups, we really need the drag lines (leashes). They save dogs' lives in the rare case of a dog fight. Shelter dogs come from all sorts of backgrounds: strays, abused dogs, neglected dogs, hoarding cases. The difference between a shelter dog play yard and a dog park is like the difference between a prison yard and a kindergarten.
      In theory we can remove the leashes from dogs who have demonstrated certain consistent behaviors, but in practice it's just not possible given that we have over 400 dogs with a high rate of turnover, behaviors change over time, etc.

    I can't believe that we humans are allowed to kill a dog just because it doesn't have a home and nowhere to go, like it's his fault. I've never been a huge fan of animals until I got my dog, I guess that's when things really changed and I saw them for what they really were. Dogs have feelings and a consciousness, they're alive and they become friends and family, but yet if we can't find a home for them we just kill them. Maybe we should start doing that with homeless people. A homeless person is worse than a homeless dog, they need food every day from shelters, they need money from the state, medicine for free, free homes, free food, free stay, the dogs just roam around and take what they can get. And if they can't find a forever home... Well we just kill them. We have to do better. We need to put some kind of law in place that makes it illegal for certain people to breed dogs. How about from now on unless a person is a certified breeder, they have to have all dogs neutered and spayed when they get them. I can't imagine being without my baby, she's like a real person to me with real feelings and a soul. imagine coming home from work one day and the police telling you that they have to put your son down because he bit someone at school. I'm sorry but I've never seen dogs go around and shoot people or are just crazy and balanced. A human would have to do something to that dog to make it that way. There is no bad dogs, there's just bad people that train dogs to be bad. Sorry this is crazy long, but it just hit me when I saw that comment about the euthanization.

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  10 місяців тому +1

      Thank you, @robertdadabo9076 . Everyone I work with at the shelter would agree with what you wrote, especially about dog breeders and about disagreeing with euthanizing dogs. Most of the dogs on the "e-list" have been rescued, fostered, adopted, or transfered. There have been dogs euthanized for extreme medical reasons.
      After working with a lot of dogs at the shelter, I definitely agree that there are no bad dogs, but there are mistreated dogs and a lot of them go downhill at the shelter, despite truly heroic efforts by a lot of the volunteers.

I had planned on making 9-hour long videos for dogs to watch while their humans were working, but it took a long time before I actually worked on it (had to buy a very beefy computer to handle it). I knew that the music for dogs isn't very effective and the videos of squirrels and stuff also doesn't work well. Far from being based on ignorance or incompetence, it was based on the latest knowledge of the step zoo disease in animal shelters (shared across most of the shelters in the US) and based on the judgement of the shelter's experienced veterinarians, who specialize in shelter animals.
      There's a lot of discussion about it in the comments here. Note that dogs were dying within hours of showing symptoms during extreme shelter overcrowding. Here's a snippet from one of my comments:
      "This was during a very serious disease outbreak (Strep Zoo) and the lead veterinarian made the difficult decision to continue with playgroups since they lowered dogs' stress level, making them less susceptible. The dogs have fun playing in the sand. If it was on a beach, no one would complain about it. Most of the sand is in the shade and the dogs can easily avoid the sun (although a lot of them choose to lie in the sun). Grass in this location would quickly turn into dirt and mud.

      This was during a very serious disease outbreak (Strep Zoo) and the lead veterinarian made the difficult decision to continue with playgroups since they lowered dogs' stress level, making them less susceptible. But we had to remove the common water which could easily spread the disease very quickly. None of us were happy about it, but it was actually best for the dogs. We monitored them for symptoms of dehydration and avoided leaving them in the yard for a long time. And we held the playgroups in the early morning before it got too hot.
      [UPDATE: A staff member explained to me that it actually wasn't Strep Zoo that was the issue with the common water, but another disease that was also spreading through the shelter. Animal shelters have a lot of disease outbreaks because there are so many highly stressed animals from various unknown backgrounds in a small area.]

      Well, all the humans who are talking in the video do a lot of work to improve the dogs' lives and get them adopted/fostered, so it's not like idle chatter from people who aren't contributing.
