Few things are worse than spending money on clothing, and then being forced to get rid of it if it gets ruined or simply doesn’t fit anymore. Why not save a little money and have some fun by repurposing some old t-shirts into something useful that you can still use? This DIY drawstring tote bag is a great way to take shirts you no longer wear and make them into something you’ll use all the time. While it might not be sturdy enough to carry school books in, this is the perfect tote bag for any vacation you’re taking this summer. And, of course, it’s great for every day use as well. Watch the video to learn how to make the cutest tote bag you’ll ever use! A lofty promise, but we’re feeling pretty confident about it.

Needle & Thread
2 Pieces of Cording (2 Yards Long Each)
Steps
Step 1:Cut Shirt Front & Back
Step 2: Add Matching Fabric
Step 3: Create Cording Tunnels
Step 4 Connect Shirt Pieces Together
Step 5: Add in Cording
Step 6: Sew in Bottom Cording

Just what I needed! I'm making a flower bed and I'm needing some medium sized rocks to make a border. I was wanting to take a trip down the river that I live by and pick some but I had nothing to put them in so this is perfect!

OMG this was super awesome, and I have been trying to transform some of my old Tshirts into new things for a very long time. You were so clear on everything and it helped me get through this project. All my friends were doting on it!! so cool!!!!!!!

Instead of stitching, you can use Mod podge glue and trust me, it works miracles for people who can't stitch! It really stays on strong and i can say it with confidence coz i once glued on a leather strap to a fabric clutch and half a day later, tried to yank off the leather strap but didn't come off at all! (Also, mod podge is a fabric glue so don't try to use it on other materials lol)

4:52 You can also whipstitch the bottom of the cording to prevent fraying. Whipstitch is the best stitch to use to prevent fraying if you don't have Aleene's No-Fray Glue from Joanns or Walmart.

TFS, Jamie! My family and I are planning a trip for next summer where we (9 or 10 of us), will camp in Disney World. I have been on the hunt for a cute bag or backpack that I won't mind carrying around the parks and campground, and I have always loved drawstring bags. This is a great idea to use old worn out shirts that don't fit anymore, or get matching shirts and make matching bags for everyone! You have given me lots of great ideas! Thanks again
Hey Cynthia! This is going to work so well for your trip! You can definitely use ribbon, but be very careful to make sure it's not a ribbon that will easily unravel, and that it's strong enough to take on whatever weight you've got in your bag. Totally share with me your bag on my social media when you're all done! 😊
Jaime you know if you're using t shirt/stretchy fabric, you don't need to do a zigzag stitch it coz it doesn't fray 😉 lol xx

Jaime hasn't replied, but I can answer that.
So long as it is the length that you need, there isn't any reason you couldn't. But typically, a lot of shoe laces don't quite reach that length. Also, be mindful, some shoe laces can fray quite easily and snap so you have to be aware of that. All in all, the cord really is the better option.
