This was really interesting -- in this 2 hours, I probably learned more about watercolor paints and mixtures than from any class or book. It's so nice to hear from someone who has actually done the research and is not just basing their info on personal preference. Thank you for taking the time to do these beautiful paints justice.
Gasp! Oto! Such an enabler. Denise will never get over her swatch addiction at this rate! -- I joke! Please never stop. These swatching videos are wonderful and I'm forever amazed by the amount of time and work you put in for us so we can see all the pretty colours. 💜
This mammoth Schmincke colour exercise is most valuable to me. I was exhausted just watching and taking notes. Thank you for the information, I have saved it to my Art playlist refer to it often.
German here. If you’re confused by them calling certain colors “transparent” when they aren’t really, that’s because the translation is occasionally a bit wonky. “Lasur” means glaze in German, but they tend to translate it as transparent. Similarly the olive green is green olive (grünoliv).
No! I LOVE your commentary; it is how I learn. And, I prefer no music; I want to easily concentrate on what you say. I can play my own favorite music softly in background if want to. Thanks so much for this slow, informative video! I believe I saw a much more recent one with music. But, I did want to put in my vote.:))
Wonderful video, thank you so, so much! Now I must buy some schmincke, goddamnit. I just need to make two remarks. The short one: there are many combos for convenience mixes like Hooker's, Payne's, neutral tint, sepia etc. In the case of the latter three, the usage of black is actually traditional, with the primary differentiator being them being the colour towards which the mix leans. Of course, another variant is the method of neutralisation (violet+yellow, blue+orange etc), which is traditional too (thus, I find it very strange when people call it Jane's grey when it lacks black, since the combo of sienna/umber + blue has been a version of the Paynes’ way before Jane called it her combo). But even then, neutral tint remains the purple leaning neutral and is not totally neutral. Just like how Payne's grey is not totally grey but leans to blue and sepia leans to warm tones. Now, for the second comment... It's art history time! So, burnt sienna, a ferric oxide pigment, is probably the most ancient pigment, used by ancient civilisations but also by prehistoric men on cave walls. The pigment was called Sienna because of the Italian city of Sienna which offered a stable source for it, and was one of the popular pigments of the Italian master painters we all know and ADORE. Now, somewhat 30+ years ago, the mines in Italy were closed, for environmental reasons and along with them the industry lost its primary source for this colour. And this is when something very strange happened. You see, in Europe, companies started using a synthetic - probably indistinguishable - alternative to the original pigment. The code of the original pigment (which was the only sienna till the 70-80s) was PR102 and the synthetic, nigh-identitical substitute was PR101. USA brands, on the other hand, decided to use something completely different, you guessed it, PBr7; a pigment traditionally used to produce the colour identified as (burnt) umber. So, technically, you should be mad at the American brands for mislabeling their product, because PBr7 colours labelled as Sienna should in fact, be labelled as (burnt) Umber Sienna-ish, at best. After all, there was no PBr7 in the mines of the city of Sienna. I believe that handprint (a pseudo-scientific but rather prejudiced and flawed - in the technical aspect of the methods followed- source) also makes the same mistake. You can look further for umber and sienna in the pages of Wikipedia and especially in the printed material provided in the footnotes.
I actually love hearing your narration. A big part of these swatch videos is seeing what an artist has to say when they look at these paints. It provides me with good information.
Also, toning down portraits with greens ... I started using DS Undersea Green as a shadow for pinkier flesh tones, and then I ended up using a teeny tiny bit of Pthalo Green to my flesh tone and using that mix as a shadow. Again, it's something I find more useful if the flesh has reds or pinks in it. I think darker flesh responds better to blues as shadows.
I'm back to watercolors after about a 6 year hiatus. I went through my watercolor tubes and found my crumpled up, empty "real" Quin Gold!!! (I thought of you, Denise!) I had NO idea that real Quin Gold was gone until you popped up on my UA-cam feed! It was so sad and kind of funny, too. Art imitates life. Love all of your videos. SO informative. Thanks
This is keeping me alive while I’m sick. Edit: I really enjoy the fact that you DON’T have music in the background. Like having music makes my brain expect more of a video and so I get bored more easily. Without the music, it’s just hanging out, listening to you chatter on about pigments, which I love. That’s just my two cents though. You should do whatever you want!
I love the unique, smooth vibe Schminke watercolors give off. I can't explain it, but theres's something so unique and pure about them. The fun of watching this particular dot card video was in how unexpected each color was :)
I put the cobalt green turquoise back last time I was at the art store and was like, "no Natalie you have enough paint", (which of course is a lie🤣), but when I saw the swatch I just had to go out today and grab a tube to try. Its so lovely 😍
Thanks Denise, your so awesome! The information that came from using their reference chart alongside the swatch chart, gave a greater insight to this brand. I find it invaluable while doing each color swatch, your sharing your own knowledge and personal opinion on all the various pigments, names used, comparison to different brands, etc.. This brings us very helpfull educational tools needed that we ourselves can use in choosing our own personal palettes. You make the best detailed swatch with me tutorials! Thank you for all your time and hard work it takes . A huge thanks goes out to your many contributors who help make these possible 💗
Please keep doing these 'Swatch with Me' vids the way you have been doing them. No music please. This is actually informative and helpful. Music is not. If I want music, I can find my own. I know this is more work but it's truly appreciated.
i don't know if i'll make it to the end before i go to sleep so i gotta say two things before i forget!! 1. i like that there's no background music in these videos, it's like bob ross, just chillin with the paints :) i personally like hearing you "drone on"! 2. your videos are the reason i even know about pigment numbers and it's definitely super helpful!!! for example i could justify buying a second watercolor set because most of the pigments were different, haha.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this :) I've been on the lookout for a good non-granulating brown and this swatch chart helped! :D Love your channel and keep putting out great content! :)
As I follow along, Denise, I feel like I'm a judge at a dog show. I give each one points, and make notes about every color, and then slip it into my bag so that whenever I am next in an art store, I have my "shopping list" ;)
I received their 48 half pan set awhile back. I love how easily they rewet and they’re buttery consistency. I still favor Daniel Smith, just find them so interesting and beautiful. Still I was so tempted to purchase their 140 swatch sheet, but Jackson’s was always back ordered. Thanks to you, I can save my money. I get more benefit from your swatching video than I’d ever obtain from purchasing it! You’re a trooper! I fell asleep in the middle with my computer in my lap, but picked up where I passed out this morning😊. I love your long videos and refuse to miss out on every bite of information you give us!!! You’re my go to color expert! Thank You So Much!❤️ Dummy Me! I’ve been missing your community content. I’m usually on my iPad , so dummy me didn’t realize the community link was empty because it’s only available on my computer until last night.
I was out of net for a week, so finally rewatching what was posted. Like I just said at Eve's swatchaton... There never enough of such quality swatching videos on UA-cam that are both detailed and consistent and feature huge amounts of swatchcards under the same lighting condition and camera. I'm struggling to get my hands on dotcards for reasonable price or samples of colors for the same and this is awesome help, really! True well of know-how when it comes to opacity and shade comparisons of a tons of brands. Thank you! Please never stop! ^.^ P. S. Watching the brush spreading the paint over the paper is very relaxing... :)
I can’t speak to portraits, but I put a pan of Green Earth in a set and used it. Up faster than I’ve ever used any before. On it’s own it is pretty if a bit pale, but it totally improves ANY color you mix it with. I plan to add it to my main palette just for mixing.
Don’t quote me on this, but i think the old masters used a technique called verdaccio where they would paint an underpainting of earthy green to make skin look more realistic. I think it’s because an earthy green would tone down the reds and madders used for skin colour and make the skin look more realistic.
@@awatercolourist , yes, you are correct about the Verdaccio technique. Some artists used Terre Verte for it, and others used a greenish raw umber. I've done a couple of paintings that way (in oil) and it's a beautiful technique, making for very lifelike skin tones. You do, basically, a monochromatic value-map as an underpainting, and then paint thinly over it with earth pigments (this was back when we could get the real earth pigments, which were beautifully sheer and glowing), letting the green show through a little in the cooler skin areas.
I'm not entirely sure why you apologize for rambling/stumbling over words, etc. We ALL do that--it's called being human. I LOVE these videos. I learn so bloody much from them, and I appreciate that you take the time to do them!!! Also, please don't add music to them. PLEASE. Cheers :)
The is informative video I have found so far! I am in the process of upgrading my W&N palette that I have been using for some years since university. I have the Schmincke catalogue at hand while I am watching, and thanks to you, I think I have managed to narrow down the colours I am going for. Great to know more about the pigments used too!
I can tell you genuinely enjoy making these videos because you always seem genuinely excited swatching and discussing the pigments :) I absolutely love watching these. I actually send these to my non-artist friends to watch who are intrigued by my recent foray into watercolor. Even they enjoy watching these videos and find them very relaxing to watch and they don't even do art or watercolor!
Hehe, I'm one of those who bought 3 PG7 when I started painting "for real" because they all had fancy names XD I need to get my hands on that dot card, I love all the colors ♥
I love these swatch with me videos. And I really like listening to you talk about the paints. Don't worry about tripping over your words, it's super relatable, at least to me lol.
I always use a very light green underpainting as the first layer in my watercolor portraits. It's a technique that's commonly called "verdaccio" and originally comes from fresco painting. It does tone the flesh tones down but it also gives the skin so much more dimension, luminosity, and an overall far more realistic look. I currently still mix the green myself but I'm planning on buying some version of Green Earth for convenience because I do paint quite a lot of portraits.
Beautiful swatching video Denise! Thank you for doing the dot cards great justice. Looks like you had a much better time release colours from this dot card than I did. Maybe I had a bad batch? How do you compare this dot card to Daniel Smith's in terms of their re-wet-ability? Thank you for mentioning my channel, it is much appreciated.
You know, I'm wondering if water quality has anything to do with it? I've heard other people comment that Schmincke are hard to rewet, and I'm always like "wut?" They're super creamy here! I'd say most of them are similar to DS, though DS does have more problem colors... though that could just be that there are more because they have more colors. Thank you again for sending this my way!
Hardish? I'm not sure to what severity, but we get mineral build up on shower heads and the electric kettle over time, as well as on the bottom of the dish rack.
We've got very soft water. Have used the same kettle for five years and we've had zero build up. Strange tho, I thought hard water would make life more difficult. Very interesting.
Watching this has really convinced me of the value of doing the dot cards, so I put one in my shopping cart at Jackson's, since they're having a decent sale right now. Thank you!
I have to vote with No Music, as I have ADD and find the music interferes with my ability to concentrate. Glad to see all the colors, but find the price of this brand out of reach, so I probabley will only watch this vid maybe on!y once more. I am now up to 6 views on the full DS video. Love it! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You are the first person who educated me on the value of knowing the pigments. I now need to go back into my book of color swatches and add the pigment numbers. Speaking of, just noticed that my Hydrus Ultramarine is PB15 and PV19, probably because they don't want any granulation. Never looked at this info before. Weird, huh!?!
Thanks Samantha! I've heard you all loud and clear, no music :D I'm so happy to hear that the videos have been helpful and I'm so grateful for your continued support!
In Liquid Color :: it makes me laugh so much because I had looked away from the computer screen while you were hoping or giving sap green and a chance and I heard your "NOPE"before I saw the Swatch. It just made me crack up! The fastest rejection of a paint ever!! 🤣😂🤣😂
I am quite doubtful I will be buying any Schmincke watercolor paints. I have bought some of their Soft Pastels and I am very desirous of them! I am branching out to soft pastels and have a few different brands but the Schmincke are so buttery and so wonderful to use! Yes, they are just as pricey as the watercolors are, no surprise there huh? The entire line is 400 colors and yes you do want them ALL! I do enjoy listening to your insight about the colors it is why I watch! I hope your doing well and taking care of yourself.
Hey long time I hope all is well with you! I just ordered that dot card and I'm looking forward to playing with these! Also how sweet of your friend to make you the sennlier full set dot card, I do have the full set ,I love them as you know Enjoy, Heather
The Payne’s Grey blue is my all time favourite colour ever, loved seeing all the colours swatched, my new colour obsession is Perylene Green will have to see if I can track down some of the Schmincke brand. I love these paints. Thank you
I literally squealed aloud when I saw a new Swatch With Me video. I love all your videos, and I appreciate the ones that have more juicy specifics or feature your own art for me to pay more attention to - but I love the Swatch With Mes to accompany me when I do my daily sketching and color mixing practice.
Thanks so much Kathryn! I do have the Daniel Smith dot card, but I filled it out prior to doing these videos. I have the mini sheet with the specialty colors that I could do in a video. Or, if you specifically would like to see a full dot card in video form, I'd be happy to film it on a new set, but as for my own reference, I'm good :) I suppose I could also film me just talking about the colors that I already have swatched out on the pages, but that seems less exciting, haha. Thanks so much for offering!
Thank you for making this :) I've been trying to firstly choose a brand and then colours and I have watched this video so many times. :) I even bought my own dot-card and swatched along with you. I live in Scandinavia so supplies and prices looks different I think Schmincke will work great for me.
I really enjoy watching swatch with me videos, especially if the artist's thoughts and first impressions are shared. Thank you for taking the time to make it. I personally do not mind the length of the videos, please don't be self aware :). I am a huge fan of Mandy Van Goeije (her spontaneity:)) and find my preference is similar to hers too. So its usually a good indicator for whether I will like a colour or not. I find your channel very informative. I am eagerly awaiting for the Senneliers, I find it extremely satisfying in terms of any brand I have used so far.
You are AMAZING!! Thank you so much for doing this. Schmincke owes you big time. TWO HOURS of free product promotion?! Infomercials aren't that long and they pay a ton to make those! Lolol 😆I hope they send you their full product range....for the next 10 years!!
I very much appreciate this swatching and I watched the whole thing. I’ll probably watch it again. I’ve been using my 12 half pan Schmincke for 2 months and I’m being very careful about what other colors I will add to it. Thank you!
Thanks for taking the time to do and edit this Denise; I know it was a big time investment! I don't have any Schmincke yet as it is so costly for us in the states, but I did love some of those transparent cool reds, the convenience greens and earth tones! May go back through and make a list of the handful I liked and collect them slowly.
I agree on the price point! Going through Jackson's makes it manageable if there are a couple colors you really want to try. And funnily enough, swatch with me videos are among my favorite to record. They're a lot of time up front and they take longer to export and upload, but there's so much less active editing time - and of course they're low stress! Just what I needed this week :D
Regarding the toning down flesh tones with green earth, I tone EVERYTHING down with green earth :D (though I'm not using the Schmincke one). It works like a charm.
I will definitely be looking into that Prussian Green! I just invested in a selected set of Roman Szmal based on Oto's swatching series and I have been really pleased with their range and affordability!
I new you were going to hate the sap green!!! Your reaction was great! Keep up the swatching! I love to watch! Swatching voyeur...sounds dirty....the rinse/brush water that is. Lol
Don't hate brush water. It is philosophy at all. All turned out of greys and all goes back to greys. For example. Black and white are just shades of greys. Colours too. It is the key to all of that visible and not visible. How much it is consumable that is question. What You Think about it?
Thank you so much for this video! I've used this video so many times to see what the colors actually look like and how they compare. Thank you for saving me the 15 euros for the dot card!
@@maribelru2011 So very true volume can be controlled but it's the info shared during the swatching that would be tuned out as well if the volume was turned down. It's that wealth of info that enriches the experience so much for me and would be sorely missed.
-drools- Ugh, this is a wonderful video. Unfortunately I can’t watch it all this morning as I’m headed to town. But you bet when I get home I’m cozying up and watching every swatch! 😍😍😍
Hi Denise! I enjoy your channel and you are a great artist! The texture you saw that is not granulating might well be a new thing I learned about and really do not like too much. It's floculation? I am sure that I did'nt spell it right. Thanks for sharing. I am going M Graham, as I said. I have one Shiminke half pan, but they are just too pricey. I enjoy my white nights also, but find that some of the colors lift very easily. Is there a best way to prevent lifting when glazing? I am adding to my Sennelier after setting up my,15 M Graham colors in two weeks, YAY!
Welcome! Thanks for sharing. Some pigments will always lift more than others, but the best thing you can do to prevent lifting during glazing is using a cotton paper. I have a big paper comparison video and the second part of the one shows the differences of lifting on various papers. Hope it helps!
I know this video is older, but I just came across your channel. I am learning more and more about watercolors and your video is very informative and helpful. I did get lost when you said that a color was fugitive? I haven't heard this term put to watercolors before so can you help me understand? Thank you for so the effort!
As it's been some time till you asked, I'll try to help you even though I'm not Denise. Fugitive is a term that is not often used with watercolors, as those are paint and made with pigment. Normally, companies try to make them as lightfast as possible, especially the high end brands. (In case you are not familiar with the term 'lightfast': The more lightfast, the less they bleach out when exposed to light, especially sunlight). When a paint is fugitive, it has no light fastness whatsoever, which is not very common for paint that is made from pigment. Those 'brilliant colors' are all fugitive. Also, some of the traditional natural pigmented paints too, Alizarin Crimson being one of them. Also, inks (which are usually and traditionally made from dye) are all fugitive. They also react with oxygen, which means: exposed to any light, they bleach out very fast, and even if they are not exposed to light or 'protected) (UV-protective sprays or glas), they bleach a bit AND change hue and color due to chemical reactions. Modern inks are sometimes made differently (like acrylic ink), but for example the alcohol ink in Copic markers, Ohuhu, ShinHan, Stylefile, etc, etc: All fugitive.
Hi Denise, I still have some of these pigments from a few years ago before they changed the names. For instance the Transparent Orange and Transparent Brown used to be called Translucent Orange and Translucent Brown. In fact, Dick Blick still lists those with the old names. Odd that they would change the names. It causes confusion unless one is keen about the pigment numbers.
Love your swatching.... I do love Schminckes SAP, it`s so vibrant in real life. Also geranium (not gerManium) is wonderful. No music, just you talking is perfect.
I know what you mean about Schmincke Vermilion. Daniel Smith lists this pigment as semi transparent. I checked Bruce's take on this pigment on Handprint dot com and all were consistent in hue and transparency and listed as semi transparent. Thanks for sharing!
I adore your swatching and brand reviews! Your knowledge baffles my mind, ability to recall from another brand the base pigments. As for music, I prefer to not hear background music. In my opinion it distracts from my ability to focus on what you are saying as I do tune in to your videos to glean the juicy tidbits of info you share as you work. Thank you for asking!
I have that Schmincke Vermilion and you are right. Its not totally opaque. Bruce at handprint said that he tested this pigment among all his brands including Schmincke and they are all consistent in transparency and hue. Daniel Smith didn't list this pigment was opaque. It seems Schmincke is the only brand that did. Schmincke Violet, (the dioxazine pigment) used to be called Mauve in this brand. They changed the names of several pigments. Their PO71 used to be called Translucent Orange and now its Transparent Orange. Their PY101 "Aureolin Hue" used to be called "Aureolin Modern." So many name changes for the exact same pigments and I thought it was silly to change the names of pigments that so many artists are already used to reaching for. I recently ordered the Ruby Red Deep and found that I already bought the Ruby Red Deep. Have you ever accidentally bought the same pigment twice? I would trade it for something else if I could. I should start a watercolor paint trade club! I hate my Schmincke Sap Green!
What a timing... i just orderd some tubes hours ago and now after seeing this i really really wanna order some more 🙈 but also i'm very happy with the ones i picked 😊 and I just love the Swatch with me videos 😊
Tiffany Grey i hope i don't butcher the english names 😂 But i got alizarin Crimson, perylene violett, chin. purple, helio turquoise, prussiangreen, sap green and mahoganybrown 😊
Susi Couture :: After I saw Denise's video, I wrote down the Helios Turquoise and Prussian Green! They look so pretty! I hope you enjoy all your colors! 🤗
I bought a 48-pan set on sale from Jackson's a few years ago, because everything I read about Schmincke made it sound like they were the top, top brand, but I was disappointed. The tinting strength was relatively poor, and a lot of the colors were repetitive. So many of the blues looked very similar, for example. I should have bought the 36-pan set because the 48 set has a lot of blacks, whites, and the gold and silver that are also weak. The pan of ox gall was pointless. But there are Schmincke colors I find essential, such as transparent orange. I recommend buying the dot card and picking up individual colors. A lot of people love this brand, but it mostly isn't for me.
Please God, do NOT put music on in the background!!!! Nothing is worse and that's why I watch your videos; you're very informative and there's no dumb music. :)
I literally took notes so when I come to the point where I have to refill my pans I can reach for more transparent colors because I discovered today that I am not a fan of opacity in my watercolors
I knew you'd hate that Sap Green! :P In fairness, some of Schmincke's greens are pretty ghastly. Some other brands - Winsor & Newton for instance - also has a very unnatural looking Sap Green. Schmincke's Permanent Olive Green looks nothing like an olive I have ever seen. If someone served me a plate of Schmincke coloured olives, I would be very suspicious and would not eat them; it looks slightly radioactive. I think Schmincke is a wonderful brand and, as you know, is probably the most affordable artist quality paint in Europe. I am not a big fan of some of their earth tones, however, such as their raw sienna, odd-looking raw umber and burnt sienna with black. That said, their sepia brown, burnt umber and maroon brown (quinacridone burnt scarlet) are lovely. I use a lot of earth tones from Daniel Smith, which is especially good because earth tones are usually the cheapest series of paint. I think designing a palette is mostly about picking and choosing your favourite shades from your favourite brands. Thanks for these videos, Denise. You are an incredible resource for watercolour artists. These videos are also incredibly relaxing, if that doesn't sound too odd...
Hahah thanks Conor! I agree on every point, I believe. I don't seem to be a fan of any European earth tones on the whole, to be honest. I find W&N, Sennelier, and Schmincke all to have some weak points in those common pigments, but I was very impressed but some of the odder single pigment browns Schmincke has here. Daniel Smith is definitely my favorite for earth tones in general as they have so much variety and depth!
You're quite right that the weakest point of European watercolours seems to be the earth tones. Sennelier makes some very weak and incipit earth colours, none of which I like. Schmincke has some very bizarre mixes for the likes of raw sienna, burnt sienna and raw umber. Ditto with Winsor & Newton who make the most hideous versions of raw umber and burnt umber I have ever seen. I don't like their raw sienna either. Of the three, Schmincke is my favourite brand, however, I tend to go with Daniel Smith or M Graham for earth tones. I really like M Graham's raw sienna and raw umber in particular. Have you had a chance to try Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet from Daniel Smith? I have been using this pigment a lot recently and am really loving it, along with Quinacridone Burnt Orange.
My vote is no music. I really enjoyed this! I have a lot of Daniel Smith but no Schminke as of yet. Do you have a preference between the two? Also, I am curious as to the reasoning of only wanting to use vegetarian paints? I know our ancestors used every part of the animal and I would think that would be a good thing to do in making paints?? Can you enlighten me? Thank you and thanks for this video!
oooooooooooooooooooo I love Perelyne Maroon! Just got it in M Gram Jewel Tones Set. I have not made a mixing chart yet. I am a beginner, getting a special sketchbook for them ;-)
I used tge color green earth and!!!! It's so useful for flesh tones!!! You can just take some pink/orange and mix it with green earth and you get a good skin tone
Here we are in the future. Magic. I've been studying Schminke while at the same time trying to ignore that beautiful newish Italian watercolor company whose only redeeming virtue is that she is always sold out.....anyway....Schminke is about the same price. I will use your information and my own Schminke dot card to make teeny forays into investments into this brand. thanks!
Hi - thanks for the lovely video. I also stress about whether or not to put music on when I make videos, but for me personally, I do not enjoy music when there is speaking, it takes my attention away. That's just my personal feeling. I really enjoy your videos, thanks so much. Having recently started my own channel, I am learning just how much work goes into making these videos. Mine is more aimed towards adult coloring.
I think the 'neutral tint' got lost in translation, the German name is neutral ink, which seems more appropriate to me. Thanks for this informative video!
Would you say that there is a big noticeable difference between schmincke's student and artist grade paints? I'm thinking of trying out the brand but the horadam sets are out of my reach atm. I'm also using them in bound notebooks so lightfastedness isn't too big of an issue. I heard that the akademie set performs really well. Would I be missing out on a lot if I opted for the student grade set instead?
I think Schmincke Akademie is a good choice. If avalaible where you live Lukas 1862 are a good artist grade alternative and they are a lot cheaper than Schmincke (at least in Germany).
You do not need background music... I value the information you provide. I would like to know what you would recommend as an alternative to PO 49, Quinacridone Gold?
Aw, thank you kindly. I haven't see it myself yet, but I hear that White Night's new Indian gold is very, very close. Otherwise, Eve Bolt has a great video comparing lots of quin gold hues, more than I have in my collection :)
That’s really more paint than I thought. And even with making a swatch, you have a decent bit left in the dot. You don’t have to make as big a swatch as you did for the video. But since these easily reactivate , it’s look like you can paint a couple or more small paintings (5x7 +/-). Really depends on the subject matter.
Jaune Brillant (tief/dark/foncé): French for Bright Yellow (Dark!) :^> I'm afraid you're reading 'jaune' as the Spanish 'juan'. Jaune Brillant is pronounced, roughly: Zhown (or Zhone), where 'Zh' is like the J in 'Je suis'; and Bree-ah~, where '~' is an unterminated nasal vowel version of 'n'. The final 't' in Brillant is silent. (Please forgive me, I can't help myself.)
@@pbasswil Mhm. Can you add ipa symbols? I can’t quite tell how the actual sound is so pronounced, especially where the Brilliant is at. Is it like /‘bri-jã/? (I don’t have the r) or like /bri-jau/? I want to pronounce it. As well, lol. I’m surprised they just didn’t put yellow there. Do you know the context of why?
@@keepyourshoesathedoor I'm guessing it became a standard paint colour name, and was just adopted into other languages without translation (but honestly I haven't looked into it). I don't know how to render the French pronunciation in IPA, sorry. But bri-jã looks about right. They're both common French words, you can find them separately in any online French dictionary. To an English-speaker, I'd represent it like this: "zhone bree yã" , where the 'yã' rhymes with the vowel in the English word 'conk', but without the nasal vowel actually terminating in a consonant. Sorry, that's the best I can do! Find a French pronouncing dictionary. Bonne chance (= good luck).
Just FYI PR48:4 is in 7 different browns from Prima Marketing; they all range from like a raw sienna-ish to a sort of Mars brown-ish or a madder brown color and they are all mixes. Also, the Grünoliv is the green olives are when they are not ready to pick yet; so it is olive green, just not the olive green of olives ready to eat (or jar/canned olives) which is what people think off when they hear olive green. Spinel is spin+el as in elephant.
Teoh here on UA-cam, did a video on the two primary color groups, and said that the magenta he used for that was quinacridone lilac by Daniel Smith. CMYK vsRYB
Thank you for the hard work , I can hear sometimes you re tired. It's not easy to do a long video and talk real time . Some other vloggers double the sound after. Thanks for sharing .
I am very like your programs, what is better quality Schmincke Ready To Use Gouache ( or watercolor) Paint Binder or Schmincke horadam gouache (or watercolor) in tubes? I appreciate your answer, thank you.
Earth green can be Pg23 but also another pigment that i dont remember.I also have this color from schmincke and it doesnt glaze a lot and gets shiny very fast cause im used to using very intense color.
I noticed that Schmincke has changed a few of their English names. For instance, #366 (PR179) which is now called Perylene Maroon used to be called Deep Red. And 213 now has had "Hue" added to its name. Interesting!
OMG. I bought the dot card to help decide which colors to buy. I swatched them on watercolor paper. I love Schmincke and the dot card really helped me to set up a nice palette.
How do you all know the pigment’s number by heart, I’m a beginner and I am in awe everytime someone says this is PB 19 and 179 ...how do you remember all of them ? Thank you 🙏
Revisiting since I have the schmincke designer gouache I am -finally- concidering to buy some tube paints for a botanical palette. Me buying tube paints. Imagine that. I guess the mijello palette really got under my skin, lol. Plus well, like you saw , my original schmincke palette is in dire need of a refill with current autumn and christmas season doing their happy dance. And you are right on the cerulian blue tone; it deffinately looks more like a pthalo blue hue. I know cause I have their pthalo blue sitting on my palette. The only one I still do not like is their prusian blue wich has all sort of strange pigment running wild in the paint refusing to get desolved ( It was not granulation, lol, that looks different) so I will sub that for another blue. Of this brand that is. I have baught that color twice and on both ocasions that happend to me wich is kind of a bummer.
I actually can afford schmincke since it retails for around 4 euro per 5 ml tube and 10 per 15 ml tube. I mean. Crazy price differences. I can get two schmincke tubes for the price of 1 daniel smith tube. I think I fell in love with their lasure line of colors. I love how deep and vibrant those are almost as much as those from the senneliers. I am currently rather liking winsor and newton's version of burnt sienna. I know,.not your favorite. But it makes for beautifull gold brown tone mixes.
This was really interesting -- in this 2 hours, I probably learned more about watercolor paints and mixtures than from any class or book. It's so nice to hear from someone who has actually done the research and is not just basing their info on personal preference. Thank you for taking the time to do these beautiful paints justice.
Thank you so much Barb! That means so much to me and I'm so glad that that it was so helpful!
Gasp! Oto! Such an enabler. Denise will never get over her swatch addiction at this rate! -- I joke! Please never stop. These swatching videos are wonderful and I'm forever amazed by the amount of time and work you put in for us so we can see all the pretty colours. 💜
Haha! Thank you Ley! It works outs well because I love doing this style of video, too! :)
Thanks for all the juicy information! Definitely a neat history lesson.
Oh so many replies ... PBr24 is the same pigment as the M. Graham Naples Yellow. It's very similar to the Schmincke but with a little more luminosity.
Awesome! Thank you Alejandro!
I fell asleep watching this last night, in a good way!
Your voice is so soothing, and watching you swatching the paint was so relaxing to watch!
Thanks so much, and I hope that you feel better soon!
I love the unique, smooth vibe Schminke watercolors give off. I can't explain it, but theres's something so unique and pure about them. The fun of watching this particular dot card video was in how unexpected each color was :)
Wow this is so cool! All our 140 Hoaradam colours swatched! Thank you so much for sharing and best regards from the Schmincke Team
Thanks Pixie! Happy sleeps :D
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this :) I've been on the lookout for a good non-granulating brown and this swatch chart helped! :D Love your channel and keep putting out great content! :)
Thanks for coming by Carrie! I'm glad it was helpful :)
Hi Carrie!
Thank You So Much!❤️
Dummy Me!
Wow! How interesting! I hope to get to try it out some more.
Agree. It is sooo useful. And makes a great combo with ultramarine violet, not sure why!
Oh wow!
I don’t even do art but these videos are seriously the best💯
I'm not entirely sure why you apologize for rambling/stumbling over words, etc. We ALL do that--it's called being human. I LOVE these videos. I learn so bloody much from them, and I appreciate that you take the time to do them!!! Also, please don't add music to them. PLEASE. Cheers :)
Yay Oto!!!! You're so sweet & generous! It's so fun to drool over each one I have that you swatch out and remember: "I have those colors!!!" lol
I thought about you often throughout the video! :D And I definitely second Oto's generosity!
Hehe, I'm one of those who bought 3 PG7 when I started painting "for real" because they all had fancy names XD
I need to get my hands on that dot card, I love all the colors ♥
It's confusing out there! I'm so grateful to finally have the dot card, that's for sure!
Do you have hard or soft water?
Oto Kano 😱
I love the Bril Opera, Colbalt green turquoise, Potters pink, Rutile yellow. I also found some new ones I’d love to try.
Schminke Sap Green: "Heyyyy, Denise. You and your pallet are looking good...think I could join you and---"
Denise: "No."
Tiffany Grey 😂😂😂 poor sap green.
In Liquid Color :: it makes me laugh so much because I had looked away from the computer screen while you were hoping or giving sap green and a chance and I heard your "NOPE"before I saw the Swatch. It just made me crack up! The fastest rejection of a paint ever!! 🤣😂🤣😂
Tiffany Grey I cracked up a bit too at myself 😂
In Liquid Color I know this is old but can you explain a little more why? Also what color from schmincke would you choose instead?
I am quite doubtful I will be buying any Schmincke watercolor paints. I have bought some of their Soft Pastels and I am very desirous of them! I am branching out to soft pastels and have a few different brands but the Schmincke are so buttery and so wonderful to use! Yes, they are just as pricey as the watercolors are, no surprise there huh? The entire line is 400 colors and yes you do want them ALL! I do enjoy listening to your insight about the colors it is why I watch! I hope your doing well and taking care of yourself.
Wow! Thank you very much for doing these for all of us just learning about pigments and all the variations thereof. Great resource.
Hey long time I hope all is well with you! I just ordered that dot card and I'm looking forward to playing with these!
Also how sweet of your friend to make you the sennlier full set dot card, I do have the full set ,I love them as you know
Enjoy,
Heather
Hi Heather - I hope you are doing well!
I find your swatch with me videos to be super relaxing and informative! I've been putting them on while I paint. thank you for doing these ^_^
The Payne’s Grey blue is my all time favourite colour ever, loved seeing all the colours swatched, my new colour obsession is Perylene Green will have to see if I can track down some of the Schmincke brand.
Let me know if you want a DS dot card, either the complete set or the mini one with all the primateks & special colors.
I didn't even notice the hours go by. 🙂 I got some new favourites for my wish list. Thank you!
Thanks Nancy! :)
You are AMAZING!! Thank you so much for doing this. Schmincke owes you big time. TWO HOURS of free product promotion?! Infomercials aren't that long and they pay a ton to make those! Lolol 😆I hope they send you their full product range....for the next 10 years!!
Hahah thanks so much! I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! One can only dream!
I very much appreciate this swatching and I watched the whole thing. I’ll probably watch it again. I’ve been using my 12 half pan Schmincke for 2 months and I’m being very careful about what other colors I will add to it. Thank you!
I use green earth a lot. But I use it next to other earth tones for the frisian landscapes
Which version are you using?
I will definitely be looking into that Prussian Green! I just invested in a selected set of Roman Szmal based on Oto's swatching series and I have been really pleased with their range and affordability!
I new you were going to hate the sap green!!! Your reaction was great! Keep up the swatching! I love to watch! Swatching voyeur...sounds dirty....the rinse/brush water that is. Lol
😂
Don't hate brush water. It is philosophy at all. All turned out of greys and all goes back to greys. For example. Black and white are just shades of greys. Colours too. It is the key to all of that visible and not visible. How much it is consumable that is question. What You Think about it?
Thank you so much for this video! I've used this video so many times to see what the colors actually look like and how they compare. Thank you for saving me the 15 euros for the dot card!
yes I am so glad you do all the schmincke colors...Love yr channel soooo much
Love these! I prefer listening to your rambling, with no music! I also like that its unedited, I like the personality and stuff coming through :D
Thanks Ellen! So glad you like them, and no music seems to be the general consensus! I'm glad :)
Please dont put on music! The quiet makes it really relaxing!
Len ? You know you can control your own volume...google
@@maribelru2011 So very true volume can be controlled but it's the info shared during the swatching that would be tuned out as well if the volume was turned down. It's that wealth of info that enriches the experience so much for me and would be sorely missed.
I agree ..it's very relaxing listening to your voice explain the dots.
I agree! No music please!
-drools- Ugh, this is a wonderful video. Unfortunately I can’t watch it all this morning as I’m headed to town. But you bet when I get home I’m cozying up and watching every swatch! 😍😍😍
Aw thank you Bethany - safe travels!
In Liquid Color It was a big day but definitely enjoyed watching the rest of this. ☺️
Sennelier Opera Rose is available again! I just got my full set last week and was really excited to find an opera in it!!!
Christine Rose oh interesting! Glad to hear :)
Wonderful video, SO useful for choosing what to add to my pallette! Thank you! 😁
I know what you mean about Schmincke Vermilion. Daniel Smith lists this pigment as semi transparent. I checked Bruce's take on this pigment on Handprint dot com and all were consistent in hue and transparency and listed as semi transparent. Thanks for sharing!
OMG! Love swatching and it's such a long video
Thanks so much Cami :)
Can't believe that I just found your channel
This is so nice and relaxing :)
What a timing... i just orderd some tubes hours ago and now after seeing this i really really wanna order some more 🙈 but also i'm very happy with the ones i picked 😊 and I just love the Swatch with me videos 😊
Susi Couture :: What did you get? 😃
Tiffany Grey yeah i hope they look as good as in the Video 😍 thank you very much 😊
Susi Couture Great choices. I love, love, love the perylene violet, helio turquoise and prussian green. I hope you enjoy them.
So what is the best alternative to the Schmincke Alizarin Crimson that is as transparent and semi staining? Particularly for flowers painting?
oooooooooooooooooooo I love Perelyne Maroon! Just got it in M Gram Jewel Tones Set. I have not made a mixing chart yet. I am a beginner, getting a special sketchbook for them ;-)
capum mortuum is one of the only schmincke colors i have and i love painting with it you should try it
I used tge color green earth and!!!! It's so useful for flesh tones!!!
You can just take some pink/orange and mix it with green earth and you get a good skin tone
Wow! That's so neat. I'd definitely love to try that in action!
Super informative, really appreciate it 🙏🌻
I’m confused. So phathlo blue red shade can be made with either pb15:1 or pb15:6??
(From handprint) PG23 is original terre verte (green earth).
That's what I thought, thanks!
My new favorite color: Transparent Orange (PO71). :)
Funny Dude :: Excellent! Go team orange!
I'm with team (transparent) orange too!
Debi Taylor :: Yay! 😃
I have a direct comparison of the two in my Akademie video :)
In Liquid Color whoops i think i missed that vid, thanks for pointing that out for me ^^
I think Schmincke Akademie is a good choice. If avalaible where you live Lukas 1862 are a good artist grade alternative and they are a lot cheaper than Schmincke (at least in Germany).
Which red tone you'd consider as a blood tone? (from Schmincke or other brand) Thanks! 🙏
Thank you for the feedback. I will definitely check out what Eve Bolt has composed.
I vote for no background music!
I find it distracting when someone's talking. :)
Jaune Brillant (tief/dark/foncé): French for Bright Yellow (Dark!) :^>
I'm afraid you're reading 'jaune' as the Spanish 'juan'.
Jaune Brillant is pronounced, roughly:
Zhown (or Zhone), where 'Zh' is like the J in 'Je suis'; and
Bree-ah~, where '~' is an unterminated nasal vowel version of 'n'.
The final 't' in Brillant is silent.
(Please forgive me, I can't help myself.)
So it’s basically just pronounce like French words.
CMYK vsRYB
I would love to see a spotlight on potters pink. It's so beautiful on its own. I'm not sure how to use it.
It's an intriguing color for sure!
Oh interesting indeed!
Great idea, using the dot card this way--not transferring the color to another paper. thank you
