Drummer: "I'm thinking in triplets"
I don't think in triplets though. I think in Du Gu Du Guh, and DuguduguDuh
I think in ba ba bum bum badoody bum bum 😋
True
This made my day
@@hanavolta9785 reminds me of that clip Freddy Mercury trying to explain how he wants the drums:
When I play drums, I think of the bass line, and when I play bass, I'm paying attention to the drum groove. It sounds really cool when the bass groove lines up with the drum feel
Really?
In a similar manner, as a rhythm guitarist I always try to play with a good connection with the bass & keys players

Bass guy: Don’t think it as triplets, think like a drummer.
Drummer: I think it as triplets.
Literally nothing is explained here. Very helpful
That's Scott's bass lessons for ya
He just said words
He’s explaining some high concept shit about music and if you don’t understand that it’s fine. 99.9% of pro musicians can’t articulate how they “feel”, it always seems like bullshit lmao
You can hear thousands of musicians desperately try to articulate how they approach the way they play through nonsensical stretched metaphors, until you find one that makes sense to you and you realize that we are all crazy.
If you're not a musician it makes no sense
Think as a drummer. So, don't think. (Just kidding- I am in awe of drummers, drummers are great)
i swear man, the melodic section must think we rhythm players are dumb or something!
Well every time I’ve heard someone explain how to play drum set they say to stop thinking
My dad's favorite joke is that you can tell if the stage is level by checking whether the drummer is drooling out of both sides of his mouth. The drummer is the smartest guy in his band.
So your tip for playing bass like drums is playing bass like drums. Very helpful.
That's what I was thinking too... lol
@@normg2242 When I play the cowbell, I usually think like a cow, lol.
@@pangeaproxima3681 ... 🤣🤣🤣
Blame the clickbait title, not a quick clip of the actual guy speaking
Yeah I have literally no idea what he was on about, and I would assume this video hasn't actually helped anybody 😅
The thing he's trying to say is that he plays emphasing the rhythm, more than playing every note perfectly.
Okay there we go, thank you

Welcome to Bass-X
Chris Minh Doky [The Doky Brothers ] is a monster acoustic bassist who has played with all the big names in the business. He has a couple of solo albums to his credit and a number of albums with his brother pianist Niels Lan Doky. He plays as lot of melodies on Acoustic bass sharing the head or the bridge section when playing with Niels Lan Doky on their albums, making the music so much more interesting to listen to. He is [ yet ] lesser known in some parts of the world. Chris Minh Doky is on par with the likes of John Patitucci or James Genus or any one else of that caliber. He has a live album with Birelli Lagrene and [ Drummer ]Andre Cessaralli playing standards . He's also recorded with Dianne Reeves and Lalah Hathaaway doing a cover of Gino Vannelli's "I just Wanna Stop " .
Trying to say something profound with no explanation so that nobody questions you. Great masterclass
Im a drummer and this is why we get along with bass guys 🤙🏻

@@devinebass I'm coming from the dark side of guitar and horns, videos like this are really helpful to learn the mindset difference and difference in musical approach to be a good bassist (rather than sounding like a guitar player/horn player playing basslines haha)
Little snippets like this are such a genuine help to trying to learn to play this instrument in a way that serves the music
Drums and Bass should be bestest friends. When you’re truly locked in with your drummer and the rest of the band can go off and get weird but you’re just laying that solid foundation, Magic
Wtf does that even mean...
drummers have to think about timing too. Some people just should give lessons
He is talking about articulation
You’re right some people should give lessons. It helps people learn the instrument. It also helps to spellcheck when being snarky. ;)

Elon Musk plays bass!
Looks like he lost some weight and his head got less square… lol
Just gonna copy my comment huh
@@Jojo.255 what? wdym i dont even see your comment
Finally someone recognize he's Yi Long Ma
I was thinking Jimmy kimmel
i recently switched back from drums to bass and that excursion into the drumworld gives me so much rhythm feel, it puts my bass playing to another level.
Bass 🎸 & Drums🥁 in concept are rhythmically equivalent to being the same instrument
Pair that with the idea of the ONE and you have what James Brown figured out. His band's translation of that became the foundation of Funk.. feels so damn good
theres something about electric double bass that just feels great to me. ive only really used one once in a music shop but they seem to feel so nice
Stand up bass is so cool!
Finally an upright!

I’ll say it once, I’ll say it again, the drums are the ultimate form of musicianship
If you are a good drummer you are a great musician
My late great grandfather used to be a bass player in our chapel back in the day, he doesn't have any musical background so he uses that approach.
instructions unclear i am now playing the bass as a piano
That's what I'm saiyan
He's just tryna say, feel the rythm and internalise it so you don't think about it mathematically
In forty seconds, he explained my entire approach to bass playing for the last 20 years. The sad thing is, I needed him to explain it to me...😒
Lol
100% correct
Best video ever
dude i’m a drummer that’s been trying to learn how to do difficult runs on guitar and piano, and i think this is what i needed
“how to play bass like a drummer” *starts smashing upright bass against the wall behind him*
Being open is learning. Thank You.
What exactly is this man saying here? I hear two descending phrases played with a different feel. How is the second one more drummer-like in any way?
It might not have been the best example but I get what he's saying. I wish i could hear the drums in his head or what he's hearing I bet it would come across better but yeah it's one of those things that's hard to put into words or even demonstrate
@@GameboyGuitar Not if you playing jazz
He is talking about articulation, don't slam every note. Follow the accents of the drummer.
Because it sounds like the feel a drummer would give on a tom fill, not like a bunch of mechanically executed notes.
Drummer : « ….did I left the milk outside the fridge this morning ?….. »
When my grandparents arrived in America from Italy, my grandfather played that type of bass in a band 😊
Wow. As a drummer I always thought bass and keys. Even in the 60's
As a drummer i can confirm im not thinking but if i am im thinking triplets
I would have liked it if I was this guy, upright is a nice thing to be a master at.
Meanwhile, the drummer in their head
*"one-two-three-one-two-three"*
Dave grohl explained his methodology for creating his bass lines is the same way.
I hear it 👌🏻
"When he does the tom thing and ends on the cymbal or something"
A fill? 😂
“How to play bass like a drummer in one easy step!”
The step: think like a drummer
Really felt like he was just stumbling over words. I generally get the idea he was trying to give but like, there HAS to be a better way to say this right?
You got that right
He's got great technique, love that flavor!
Respect
Be a listener that plays, not a player who listens
I need a bass like that 😂
This is interesting samuraiguitar said something similar "if i approach my guitar playing in a way a drummer would the out come is not something id usually play"
Bassists who have never drummed: "I don't know how to think like a drummer"
Drummers who also play the bass: "what"
People trying to learn an instrument watching this: "I don't know how to think like a drummer"
My guy no one wins here
"I'm a drummer now" just because you say something don't make it true
I know it sound a little bit cliché but this video littaraly changes my life
Drummer: "I'm thinking in power chord"
I really want a double bass!! ✌️☺️
F*CK yeah. I heard the toms in your playing.
Lmao this wasn’t it fam “saying a word and not thinking of the meaning you are thinking of the spelling” *proceeds to make every bassist over think playing a simple groove
this brings up so many more questions than answers, makes sense
I'm a drummer and I try to never think
Agreed!
Oooo good pont
Makes sense. Drums and bass are like the secret lovers in the group lol also it’s not a secret to everyone else.
I’m high. Don’t listen to me
Ghost notes do alot to propel a bass line in a percussive manner.
*Fieldy entered the chat*
I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE I WANT THAT BASS
It's like he forgot he had this video scheduled and got really high beforehand
BROTHER JAMES BROWN APPROVES
Me when I play the trombone like a tambourine
You told the secret ❤
It's out!! ;)
As part of the rhythm section you got to keep that beat.
Bass🤝Drums
"It's not the right feel"- depends on what you wanna create.
I want a bass so bad i have an electronic one for years but the doublebass is just soooo expensive for me lol
This might be the way that Dustin medeiros of poor man’s poison thinks too. He used to be a drummer for Done For Good before they rebranded into PMP, and now he’s a bassist.
This what I'm talkn bout!
Great!!! I do It too!!! But watching your video made think about It , ill try to put more "attention" in thinking like im a drummer!
The same think could be done with the other instruments. If you play chords on bass you could think like you are playing a keyboard or a Guitar, or if you play a Melody you could think at a cello or a clarinet ecc
I played drums for 10 years before I started bass.
Once was a word for this.
Staccato.
thank you Mr musk
i feel this tho and i play bass
Thanks for the reminder. I post this mentality recently.
I play drums but I'm learning the upright base
Enjoy the process dude! 🤘🏻
Sweeeeeet!😎👍
You could just say play with rhythmic dynamics
Make sense. It’s a lot different.
Dave Grohl of the foo fighters talks about this in terms of playing guitar. Where certain parts of the guitars fretboard correspond to a drum.
When I played upright all my triplets and couple slaps were just drum rudiments/fills.
"Dont think of the spelling think of the meaning" holy macaroons you just put the last couple of weeks worth of practice into one sentence. Ive been working on my rhythm a lot lately and this is literally the moral of the story.
Thank you.
So glad I'm not the only one who thought this made perfect sense, and was a clear and helpful point (especially for someone transitioning to bass, as in my case)
Who ever thinks "now i play triplets" has to change something in his mindset
That's the approach that Larry Graham kind of took and now we have slap bass.
I am a drummer, but i also play electric bass:)
Me: im a Drummer now
Also me: somehow already late for band practice
Bass and drummers need to be talking to each other musically… as well as throughout the set 😂
I clicked on this video because I thought Elon musk was playing base

Look mom I’m a drummer!
🤣🤣🤣
that bass is cool
what notes should I play when I think as a drummer?
Sticky notes... 🤣
Don’t worry they will probably hire you to be Tony stark😃
I'm thinking of how many letters are in the word and then putting them in alphabetical order and then thinking of all the words I can make out of the letters... I'm a guitar player!! ;)
The bass and drummer set the timing. Guitar can be and usually is, all over the place.😂
😅😅😅
