"Everyone's just queer in the show, right?" In Taika's own words: "Basically everyone is on the gay spectrum in the show, but no one ever talks about it. [...] No one ever says, 'You're gay.' It's just accepted in this world of pirates."
I believe the directors have said that the "stab me" thing was intentionally sexual and done because Ed's only experience with physical intimacy was through violence, prior to Stede
Absolutely this. It's also the sort of interaction that, historically in our media, would be used to code characters as gay without ever explicitly saying they were. There are lots of little things like that throughout the show (many of them exemplified by Izzy, actually). Tenderness is not allowed between men, so gayness was frequently sublimated to violence with phallic objects instead.
Izzy Hands is by far one of the most extra, most cringe, most well written antagonists I've seen in a long time, and I love every second of his existence on screen. Kudos to the writers and Con O'Neill.
He's weirdly relatable too. Like, his exasperation with Stede's crew makes perfect sense when you consider how dangerous their job is and how much they just fuck around. If you've ever worked in a kitchen (or many other jobs, I'm sure), you know there's always that one person who is completely stressed out all of the time about how dangerous and negligent everyone else is being. I feel like Izzy is just trying so hard and never gets a word of thanks. And he also has that internalized homophobia situation going on... I really hope we're heading for an Izzy Hands redemption arc eventually. I love to hate him, but I would also love to love him.
The duel between Izzy and Stede 🤣 The way Stede smacked Izzy with the sword because that's what Ed did to him at the beginning. Omg And Frenchie yelling "oh you cheeky bitch!" When izzy slapped Stede. I love this crew so much
Izzy went through the 3 stages of grief listening to Stede and Ed Disbelief Heartbreak Homophobia Did he really think they were just doing it on the deck? 🤣
I've seen that take before and if it was any other show I might buy it...but is it homophobia? Like he has a very specific issue with Stede and Lucius but not Fang or Jim or Blackbeard even. It felt to me more like gatekeeping or toxic masculinity or even classism. Here are these two, comparatively, educated pirates who haven't had to struggle in the specific way he has. Lucius and Stede aren't engaging in the hard work that piracy requires and Stede brings nothing to the table apart from financing. That they feel like they can gain easy access into a societal structure that is made up of "real pirates" feels to me what he finds infuriating.
@@cupguin no we don't really think it's homophobia. The creators made it clear they aimed to not have gay related trauma in the show like homophobia. And that it's more of a commentary on how we view masculinity. We all know Izzy is in love with Blackbeard. The three stages of grief is a running joke because it just sounds so funny.Just like "i can't believe Izzy invented homophobia to internalize it"
it IS homophobia. homophobic gay people can and do exist, and izzy is absolutely being homophobic when he uses feminizing language towards lucius and stede. if it were about work ethic, he'd be punishing black pete and wee john just as much as lucius. men not preforming masculinity the way he thinks is correct is what izzy finds infuriating.
@@bridgetb.7965 That is a good point. That is homophobic behavior toward men that don't fit 'masculine standards'. I do take homophobic gays seriously in other shows and in real life. But here, it's too laughable that i can't really comprehend it as the type of homophobia to get upset about (if that makes sense.) I mostly see comments about Izzy's homophobia as jokes and memes rather than a serious topic.
@@elleryharper8030 i agree that izzy's homophobia IS played for a joke in most instances because the series is very good about rendering bigotry as pathetic and impotent, and we're here for a fun time. but it's also a major factor motivating izzy's actions in the series that actually has big consequences, plot wise. it is a character flaw that needs to be addressed if izzy ever wants to have an ounce of growth and i think dismissing it ignores some really smart, nuanced writing on the part of the show.
Stede wasn't lucky - he backed himself up to the mast on purpose. The reason he's telling Izzy that the mast is made of cherry wood which is "rather strong" is because he knew Izzy's rapier would become stuck in it. That was strategic.
I don’t think it was planned because Stede at that point didnt know the rules of dueling. so it wouldn’t make sense for him to plan for Izzy to get stuck if he’s unaware that that could result in Izzy’s loss
@@mj2208 Stede has read all about pirates (we see he has several books on them) and knows enough about how typical pirate crews are run (as he says in the pilot) I think it's more than likely he has read about the basic/standard rules of a duel. There's also the fact that he asks "did I do it right" after he gets stabbed, as if he knows the duel is now over. Similarly, how he starts boasting about his mast's sturdiness, he wouldn't be so calm if he thought the duel was still on (after all, Izzy could just pick up Stede's sword & stab him through the heart) Also how he doesn't look surprised when the crew declares him the winner. Stede is shown to be very clever (pretending the jungle is haunted, the lighthouse plan, the game with the aristocrats) I think he could have just been asking for clarification (rules are probably modified by whoever is dueling) OR he was pretending to know less than he does so Izzy wouldn't guess his plan.
Dueling wasn't just a thing made up by pirates. Rich people did it too. I would suspect that Stede actually knows MORE about the rules of dueling than the rest of the crew, except Izzy who seems to have plenty of hands-on experience.
Watching Adam (a gay reactor) comment on Lucius (a gay character) who is played by Nathan Foad (a gay actor). It truly is pride month 🌈🌈🌈🌈 That being said, I couldn't wait to see your reaction to the "stab me" scene. That was truly a life-changing moment for me XD
Yeah, the sweetness of that lucius/pete scene took me by surprise, too. Heart=full. And what you say about the whole show and how it just enchants you with its originality and adorableness and everyone being themselves and queer, is so true. It´s got a lasting effect, too. It´s fresh and what we need and ugh, yes. Can´t wait for s2. Such a gift. And that bathtub scene... peak vulnerability and intimacy and MY HEART.
Your reactions are *always* incredible but you saying "oh my god" right before Pete did at 7:30 is just so hilarious to me, and also one of these reasons why reactions sometimes enhance the experience of watching these shows. Anyways, Lucius and Pete are adorable and I want them to get married yesterday. YAY gay pirates!!
Lucius and Pete were so unexpected and are so adorable! I was so happy with Pete's character arc, because it looked at first like they were going to make him into the traitor and instead they turned him into this sweet loving guy. That's one of the million things I love about this show! Subvert all the tropes! I'm so happy someone else loves this show as much as me. I can't wait to see what you think of the rest!
That stab scene was totally Ed's version of flirting. Teaching Stede to defend himself, playfully smacking him with his sword, the bedroom eyes while Stede holds him close after stabbing him?? Ed wants it bad!
Lol, you fully jumped when Buttons burst through the curtain to tell Stede about the fog. XD As for the what you were saying about Stede stabbing Ed and that whole scene being sexy and sensual, yes, this is 125% intentionally written that way, showrunner David Jenkins has talked about the stabbing being a stand-in for sex, so every single double-entendre and WEIRDLY SEXUAL NOISE and Izzy's reaction, none of that is accidental, and it's not even like a ~wink~ at the audience, it's more like David staring directly into the camera at us.
love this show for giving us the most hilariously deranged homoerotic swordfight. ed, the rituals are truly intricate, thanks for giving us another peek of belly, but please learn to just ask a guy to f*ck you. i can't believe we get THAT and also get incredibly soft, intimate scenes like ed in the bathtub, wrapped in stede's robe and pouring out his heart to him, expecting to be recognized for the monster he feels like and instead receiving forgiveness, understanding, and comfort.
Izzy could just stab Stede but he brought two swords for the duel, he has honor but I don't think he can see any other way to be a pirate like Ed is seeing
If he might have just known Ed wouldn't let him kill Stede. Or thought Stede's crew would defend him (or avenge his death) if he just attacked. But if he challenges Stede to a duel (and Stede accepts) then everyone's hands are tied. They can't intervene (that's why though Ed tries to both stop Izzzy ['No, we're not doing this'] and warn Stede off ['Careful, he knows his shit'] he backs off once Stede makes it clear he's accepted the duel. His hands are now tied.) And you just know Izzy was 100% sure he would win, so it was a foolproof plan in his mind
Love this show so much! I just found out that Izzy Hands really was Blackbeard's right hand man! I knew Stede was friends with Blackbeard in real life but had no idea Izzy was a genuine historical figure too! This show is so good
What makes it funnier is that the real life Izzy would be 16ish at the time this show takes place. There's this running joke that Izzy in the show is the angriest and oldest 16 year old we've seen. 🤣
It brightens my day so much when I get the notifications for these. I love how much you appreciate the humor, but also the sincere moments. I don't think a show has ever gotten me this attached to ALL of the characters. So excited for the rest of these!
Blackbeard was known to be very theatrical, he would put small firecrackers in his beard and hair to intimidate people when he "appeared out of nowhere" the art of fuckery indeed.
I love watching you watch the show. Watching you discover all the little moments and details makes me enjoy it all over again. You have so much enthusiasm and you are so much fun. I want to invite all my friends over to watch this show, just so I can watch them watch it for the first time and react the way you do. Can't wait to see you react to all the rest of the episodes. So many amazing moments yet to come!
Watching your reactions half way to this series is giving me life jsyk. I'm gonna watch the next episode and then watch your reaction to it when it comes out! It's one of my favs!
Watching this scene for the second time and I'm realizing the metaphor in Stede "stabbing" Edward. Im gonna guess my husband caught the metaphor the first time. I have a really bad time with metaphors and symbolism as someone with a very literal mind.
“I’m not a good person, Stede. That’s why I don’t have any friends.” “…Hey. I’m your friend.” “…No…” That was the moment that the show had me. I’ve been in so many moments exactly like that. Ed trying so desperately to shrink away from Steve’s support because he doesn’t think he deserves it. He doesn’t want it, it feels like rubbing salt into a wound. I’ve been there. The hand to head touch gets me every time I see it, because it feels like a level of intimacy I personally would have with my potential partner. As an asexual, that hand touch feels perfect.
That scene also had me because of Ed reverting to a child-like state. The way he acts and talks was on point. This is one of the few rare times I've seen that side of PTSD protrayed accurately in media.
This is my favourite episode! But at the same time each episode gets better and better. I don't know how they do that. I love love love the sweet Lucius/Black Pete scene here. What is their ship name anyway?
