I know Stede is pretty cringe in this episode but lets just take a moment to remember this is probably the first time in his life he has had the spotlight and been praised, of course he is going to soak it up like this, and after Calico Jack, this is what he thinks Ed wants. If only he had realized Ed was moving the other direction.

The first time he had a little spotlight was when he went back to Barbados and the local guys at the pub admired him for having the guts to be a pirate; he soaked it up then too. So it's not like this is even out of the ordinary for him. It's just amplified. And of course it is. He's getting recognition for things he's actually accomplished, not just playing pirates anymore.

@@sybariticcupboardrat3763Feeling flattered is still strange for Stede, because most of his life he was ridiculed, precisely for being too gentle and sensitive. In the Barbados tavern the other landowners lost interest when he suggested that he had never killed premeditatedly. To regain their attention and respect, Stede had to exaggerate his murders. And Ed also succumbs to flattery, remember what happened to him on the aristocrats' ship. But at that moment, Ed had Stede close, who helped him regain his self-esteem.

I am probably the only person who didn’t think Stede became all that bad. Until Ed left him he just seemed like he was enjoying himself. I didn’t really think he was that egotistical at all. Only when the pirate Queen tried to take away his crew, did he lose it.
Ed leaves, then his crew is going to leave…I think his reaction was Stede being Stede. He would have behaved the same 1st season. He always over estimated his abilities.
I think Ed was far more cringe. He literally made irrational life decisions, decided how Stede would react beforehand, and rejected Stede’s willingness to adapt to the new Ed. He needs to realize the New Ed is not the New Ed without Stede Bonnet!

Ed panicked. And so true on Stede. This was his dream, all his life, even before Ed. And he can't even enjoy it for one day

    • @llc358
      @llc358 8 місяців тому +9

Ed definitely panicked, but I can kind of see why he decided to cut and run rather than let Stede have a chance to actually react to him wanting to retire. Last time he tried to embrace fully letting go of Blackbeard, Stede left him and Izzy threatened him, so I get why he panicked. Everything has happened too fast for him to really trust Stede again when he says he won't leave. Plus, we've already established that Ed has some self-hatred problems, and I can see how he wouldn't feel like he could even ask Stede to give up his dream of being a famous pirate for him, when he feels like he isn't worth it. They've only been reunited for a few days, only had their second kiss like 48 hours ago, and I think Ed is having the same panic that Stede had, seeing the other change suddenly and drastically and thinking that they have "ruined" the other one because of their own self hatred rather than actually communicating.
Also, catching 1 fish and then deciding "I'm a fisherman now, my life is fishing" is so adhd -core it cracked me up.

Surely Izzy has to be everybody’s favourite by now. He’s incredible. I think Ed’s descent into evil chaos made Izzy acknowledge feeling he’s never had to address before. He realised how much he loved Ed and that’s something that’s coloured his whole being. It wasn’t until he saw the man he loved spiral into madness, due to his love for somebody else, that he actually realised how strong his own feelings were. Something like that anyway.

I'm a fully paid up member of the Stede Bonnet Defence Squad. Everything was going great until the groupies showed up. Ed encouraged Stede to go to Spanish Jackie'z and wasn't jealous or worried - he only panicked when Jackie mentioned how Stede may not like retiring (when, let's face it, the man would do anything for Ed after nearly losing him). Ed catastrophises and finds a way out before he can get hurt by Stede choosing piracy over him. So Stede is drunk, he's lost Ed, he's losing his crew, and now he's doing exactly as Ed did at the beginning of the season - burn the world or die trying.
Stede is a bundle of anxiety and guilt disguised as a man and Ed needs to come back asap.

Very true. Stede didn't really do anything wrong, and Ed genuinely seemed happy for him until he realized their current life goals are incompatible. One the one hand, I like that Ed fully committed to giving up piracy because he needed to make that choice, but that pesky self-loathing and lack of communication skills had him deciding that Stede would never chose him over pirating

  • @liol3409
    @liol3409 8 місяців тому +35

Stede in this episode has several aspects in common with Ed:
    1. When they receive compliments, they don't know how to stop. It happened to Ed on the aristocrats' ship. In Stede's case, compliments is something that has rarely happened to him in his life and unfortunately he has only been flattered when he is violent. His crew was going to kill him for being a boss too gentle. The other landowners in his town only showed interest in him when a rumor spread that he had become a pirate and when he suggested that he had not premeditatedly killed anyone, they stopped being friendly, so Stede exaggerated his murders.
    2. Stede also can't handle a breakup without trying to get himself murdered. In Stede's defense, he confronts Zhen Yi because he feels that she is stealing the only family he has at the time. Ed abandoned him, there is no way he will return to his wife and children, Buttons turned into a bird. Even the Swedish boy had found a place with Jackie. And it was hateful the ease with which Olu, Jim and Archie accepted Zheng Yi's proposal. Well, Olu is in love, but Stede saved Jim and Archie's lives twice, he even understood why they had hurt his love and they never think about how he will feel.
Paradoxically, fighting with Zheng Yi, Stede saved everyone's lives, because he prevented them from being close to the ships at the time of the explosion. Stede grows emotionally in the most serious moments, so he will surely once again be an assertive leader when he must fight for his life and that of his crew.

  • @dovike.V.

I have few thoughts on this episode:
Stede got what he dreamed of all his life. Even before Ed. He got to be real pirate. Why are we forgeting that it was his dream. ANd he can't even enjoy it for one day without consequences.
"Last night was a mistake" my ass. Breakfast in bed, lunch date doesn't scream last night was a mistake. Stede had sex with a man for a first time, sex with a person he truly desired, maybe even sex he really enjoyed for a first time, just to hear that it was all a mistake. I understand where Ed is comming from saying that, but how it is so so sad.
And i think he got beaten up by Zheng partly on purpose, just to punish himself

I'm absolutely of the opinion he got in the fight with Zheng as a self-sabotage. Like, there was ego too but he refused to stay down and maybe part of that was his lack of self-preservation.

Stede was hurt and clinging to what he had left that made him feel good: the ego boost of fame and his crew/family. Zheng threatened to take away one of that family, then took a stab at his ego by denigrating his accomplishment, and poked him about Ed. In fact, the Olu was the one who was nicest to him and was there for him in the beginning. And Zheng just kept coming and coming at Stede, even when he was crawling away, not satisfied until he was completely humiliated and begging for mercy. Why? Because that greenhorn got the better of her. She's got just as big of an ego problem as Ed or Izzy. That's how Ricky got the best of her. She was so arrogant about her superiority that she never saw a 'mediocre' man coming.

It really becomes sad when you remember that this might be the first time ever that Stede has felt like people around him like him and care about him. Like, we know it’s a shallow appreciation they have for him, but Stede has been bullied, abused, left behind and rejected by his peers his whole life and doesn’t see it that way. Ed was the first person to truly like him, care about him and Stede didn’t always know how to handle that, which is partially why he ran away in season 1.
So now, when so many people suddenly like him and think he’s cool, of course it’s gonna go to his head! And yeah, it’s cringe, but I can’t help but feel so bad for him. Especially when it starts looking like his crew is abandoning him for Zheng and he loses it.

Oh my gosh, I feel bad for Zheng. I hope she wasn’t hit by that cannonball. NIce double-meaning of the title, too. The literal "man on fire" is the cocky drunk idiot who decided he'd challenge someone a little smarter and more careful than himself, like the swaggering greenhorn taking on the old gunslinger. Stede literally flicks him off without breaking a sweat. ...But later Stede is the man on fire, drunk and despairing over Ed leaving him and enraged by Zheng recruiting his crew - and full of the cheap adulation of his new celebrityhood - and challenges the single best pirate in history like that idiot he immolated.

Stede being Stede as he is now famous and being revered is totally fine to me. He’s now enjoying the fame he has earned, a parallel to when those pub people were with him in episode 10 last season but stede was sad then coz he had left Ed and much of his pirating was a fluke. Now he believes he has both Ed and is now legit a proper pirate, I’d let him take it all in and live the dream a little before it all ends again…

I watched 2/3 of this episode before work last week, then was sad all day, then came home and watched the end and was even sadder, what with the crew members deciding to leave, Stede picking a fight with ZYS he can't hope to win because he is in despair and reckless. I think dueling with Zheng Yi Sao is self-harm on Stede's part.
I will say, on reflection, while I don't think it's a fun episode, it feels very real. The underlying matter of Ed and Stede's fight is the stuff couples fight about. (Can we make important decisions together? What is too much to ask of a partner? Is there a balance of separateness and togetherness that works for us?) And they both have big insecurities that they're not naming (Ed knowing that pirating will kill him and needing out, Stede feeling like he's the reason Ned was mocking Ed, Ed feeling like Ned only showed up and tortured the crew because of past decisions Ed made, Stede worrying that it's a mistake for anyone to care about him). And because they can't name those things, their insecurities come out sideways, and they hurt each other. I've had multiple breakups that look like the fight in 2.7. Nobody's entirely right, and nobody's entirely wrong, and if Stede and Ed could actually say the damn things they need to say, they'd figure something out.

I knew that Stede killing Ned Low was going to mess up his and Ed's relationship. At the beginning, I literally thought it was Ed packing to leave before he put in the cannonball. As much as I want it to all be sunshine and rainbows, I do think the angst to Ed and Stede's relationship adds even more depth! Like I get it for Stede, he has basically NEVER been loved or really loved, and it seems like he has a hard time to even believe he can be loved, so then when everyone starts being a fan of him when he's acted distinctly *not* like himself, he would definitely run away with himself. For all his "talk it through, as a crew" Stede very rarely opens up to how he feels - like in 2x04 when Ed described the beard shaving as a mistake, he just looked hurt, same with this ep, so I hope 2x08 starts to delve into that a bit more! And completely get Ed's side of wanting to part ways with that life too. I am hoping they will both realise that as long as they have each other, the rest will work itself out 💖

  • @mgatwood42
    @mgatwood42 8 місяців тому +5

This novel isn't directed at you specifically, more the idea in general, but I'm seeing a lot of people mentioning the popular theory that character development = death for Izzy. So, to toss my own $6.75 in, I honestly can't see it happening. A few reasons:
    1. It doesn't make narrative sense. There is still a lot left to be done with Izzy story-wise, and he's a very useful character for the writers. Of all the crew, Izzy and Ed are still the only ones with any real idea what they're doing. Without Izzy the writers would have to rely on Ed for any form of nautical knowledge-dropping. While there could be some value in removing experienced characters and forcing the inexperienced to truly manage on their own, there are many easy ways to do that without permanently chopping those characters from the show. Izzy is also the main go-between for Stede and the crew and has just started playing relationship therapist for Ed and Stede, being the voice of experience in both cases, and currently no one else can fill those roles the same way.
    2. They need romance potential in this ROM-COM. There's no way this current story-line with Ricky, a bunch of British warships, the harbour on fire, Ed and Stede split up and an attack on the pirate town gets fully wrapped up in one half-hour episode, so they're definitely banking on a Season Three. However, Ed and Stede's romance is kind of played through now - all the big milestones have been hit, some a few times, and there isn't much fresh ground to cover with them. Izzy is by far the writers' best source of new romantic tension. Yes, they could drag out the Olu situation (assuming Zheng is still alive, which I assume she is), but we've already had a drawn-out Olu romance and there's really no tension within the quadrouple anyway. Watching Izzy trying to navigate romance for the first time though? Possibly with Lucius as his wingman? That's rom-com gold and the fans would go feral for it.
    3. It's cheap. Killing off a character who's had so much effort invested in them without completing their story is only good for shock value, and these writers have pretty consistently veered away from the cheap gut punches. Axing beloved characters just for ~subversion of expectations!~ only sours viewers on the show after they've been tricked into strong emotional investment in those characters. The show already tried that with Lucius and it left the fanbase massively angered even after it turned out Lucius survived, and Izzy is even more popular now than Lucius was at that time.
    4. Izzy is an older gay man who has just recently started to come to terms with his sexuality and begun exploring it in a loving and supportive environment. That's an interesting story to explore with a lot of strong representation and emotional resonance attached to it. Showing a gay man surviving in the closet for years (despite being in love with his male best friend) and then coming out and immediately being killed off is SUCH a bad look. Not that I'm thinking of any specific other show in particular or anything pffft...
    5. Izzy has already come near death several times. First the mutiny, then when Blackbeard shot him, then when he shot himself, and then when he was clearly on the edge of trying a second time before the crew made him into their new unicorn. The writers like dangling Izzy threateningly but I don't think they'll actually finish him off at this point. I do feel like they might have Izzy get stabbed in the finale though, as that would match up with the season opener, him being this season's Lucius and Ed telling the kids that people are likely to survive being stabbed, and that he'll end the season alive but somewhat out of commission. At this point it's not even shock value so much as, "AGAIN, Izzy?"
    6. If they're determined to kill someone off in this season finale, I feel it would more likely be a 'chorus' crew member, specifically Fang, Olu, Jim or Archie. Fang would hit hardest for kick-the-puppy points, Olu is kind of a loose end now, and Jim and Archie are about equal in their chances for the shouting-Watch-this!-and-then-exploding Darwin Award. For the rest, obviously the writers have to keep Lucius and Pete alive for the wedding, plus probably Frenchie to play at it and Roach to make the cake. I'm hoping Wee John will be Izzy's romantic interest for next season - they do both love drama and playing with fire, and Wee John seemed thoroughly charmed by him during the party. Also the size difference is hilarious, Wee John is likely the one who persuaded Izzy to go to the party in drag and sing, and whenever Izzy has made ANY mention of his, ahem, 'interests' he's been right next to Wee John (both for "[torture] will only turn me on" and "Oooh, Daddy!").
    7. I just don't think it's that kind of a show. While things do get very dark on occasion it's almost always in a way that can be recovered from or brushed over. Izzy has already suffered a permanent consequence of his previous actions and I don't think they're going with a 'redemption only in death' angle for him. Rather I think Izzy is the 'proof of concept' that Stede's approach of kindness and support works, transforming him from a deeply unhappy, angry and lonely man who expected to die alone into someone who now has hope for the future and is able to both give and accept love and kindness himself. He's actually become the perfect captain to take over the ship once Stede and Ed inevitably decide to fake their deaths and run off to open an inn together, and that's what I think Izzy's ending will be - sailing off into the sunset as the new Captain Hands with his beloved crew fully in support of him.
Can you guess Izzy is my favourite? XD Even aside from that though, I don't see any way they can kill off Izzy in the next episode and make it feel at all satisfying or natural to the story, either his or the show's. Certainly I'll be deeply disappointed in the show if they go that route.
Anyway, hopefully this essay will be of some comfort for those worried for Izzy's future as we await the finale. Will anyone read it? Who knows, but I had fun writing it.

Second all this. But I'm also pretty sure Izzy at least got a cuddle out of Wee John after the party. There was just a little too much spring in his step the next morning.

What do you mean by "it's not Stede" and "he's faking it"? Playing pirates and being unrealistic about his skills is the most Stede thing there can be! It had always been!

also ngl: I always thought Rhys was hot af but the outfits this season? leather trousers, tits out shirts and when he was on his knees and took shots?

I love your reactions, and the comments here are brilliant.
What are everyone's predictions for ep 8?
Ricky blew up the Pirate Queen's fleet, and was previously obsessed with Stede. Do THEY end up together (poss against Stede's will) but Izzy convinces Ed he needs to win Stede back (season 3)?
Con O'Neil is an absolute legend btw.

fuck flowers, I want twine on my breakfast in bed tray from now on!
Also: where Stede wasn't talking in S1, Ed isn't talking now and while it's an obvious plot thing and important for their development as a couple, I HATE IT! (partly bc I still have so much trauma from GO, partly because THIS was so unneccessary and easy to solve but Ed's gonna Ed so I get it. still hurts like all fuck.)
can we also talk about a) the way stede/rhys FONDLED that coconut rim, bro was DEFINITELY replaying last night fr, b) bro just murdered someone and still squeals with excitement when running from a "restaurant" without paying oh never change bbg c) the other one of stede's new pirate besties is his old "bandmate" - check out "rhysently granted" for their...smash hit "Jandals"^^
    d) "made your boyfriend blush" and ed's smile? you damn well know he did by waking him up with the best bj of his life just saying^^

From episode 5 to this, two days passed, this season passed in what, two weeks? I needed more time for me to believe in Stede becoming someone who is happy to set people on fire.
Maybe Ed will stay on land at the end of the next episode and Stede at sea, because if Stede doesn't accept and support Ed's change, he would be like Izzy last season

If people can accept that Ed has changed, he is not a villain, since a month ago he was torturing people, his own crew and the guy who has been with him for over twenty years, why can't they accept Izzy's change?
and I want to say that the only person Ed apologized to was Fang, to the crew he said everything was in the past, it won't happen again, and to Izzy it was only sorry for your leg, not for what I did to your leg

I hated Stede so much this episode the way he acted was not a newly found confidence, he acted like a spoiled white man from a rich family. He acted like the very ppl who bullied him as a child, except he is not a child anymore.

I think the reason you aren't clear on how to pronounce Zheng as "Zang" or "Jang" is because "zh" is like a mix of a Z and J. Try to make a z that turns into a j sound. So "z-jang" pronounced as one syllable. I am not sure about the actual Chinese pronunciation as I only know some basic pronunciations of a few Mandarin words (and not sure is Zheng even is Mandarin, that's just the Chinese language I am more familair with), but that is how they are pronouncing it in the show.
