Yeah, i live in a small city but the house prices here are pretty terrifying. Her house would probably be worth over a couple million here epescially the land. I recently found a guy on yt that bought an old mining village for 1.4 million which wouldnt even buy a house in my neighbourhood. (My street has a lot smaller houses compared to my neighbours though). When she said what she paid for her house it generally seemed insane to me.
You're right!! It's all perspective! I've gotten so used to those giant American homes with massive bedrooms and big hallways that I see in photos and social media. All I know is that this house is perfect for me!

Compared to Spain standards.... Everyone here lives in flats, inside big buildings. I lived in UK for a while and it shocked me how even the "worst" neighborhoods were full of terraced houses, that is for rich people here. It depends of what you are used to, it never occurred to me before that we all Spaniards lived in shoe boxes. It makes me a little angry, honestly, how unaware I was of the importance of having YOUR space, not sharing the door, the stairs, the elevator, not hearing your neighbors aaaall day, or even having the littlest tiniest piece of grass.
@@atembleq I was an au pair in Spain and I noticed that - even wealthy people live in apartments, I was a nanny for an affluent family, and even they lived in a flat. My brother in law is Spanish, though he grew up in the remote countryside and his family ran a restaurant. Though in the UK many houses are split into two or even three smaller flats, so they may look like terraces but there are 2 or three families living there.

Ignore the haters. Making your house livable and pleasing for you. Paint is the BEST way to figure out colors, styles, etc that you want. If you don't like it - repaint! Great on the budget and easy to redo if you don't like it a few years down the road. Good luck!
That's exactly it. Flues that don't have closures and don't have the proper kind of caps at the top of the chimney will both suck heat out (no closure) and also permit downdrafts (no chimney top) when not in use.
I've found that green couch on Facebook Market a bunch of times. Just keep your eyes peeled and you'll probably find it at some point! Most often in city areas people purchase it. 😊

I love the question, "are you happy with your choice?" I live in a market with a housing shortage. rent prices have sky rocketed and so have house prices. I found a bargain house and bought it. Am I happy with my choice? absolutely! the alternative was homelessness. I have no idea if it will be my forever home, but I'm having a fantastic time making it mine. That's my long way of saying I relate. I'm loving watching you.
As someone who has lived through a many year reno as well. (And still on going..) I find it amazing how adaptable people actually are. We moved our living room to our dining room with the intent on making our living room a games/library , we moved our bedroom to a smaller bed room with the intent on making the owners suite a shared office. Literally everything is possible and just because it is not how others would do it does not make it wrong. We have not had a railing on our stairs for over a year because we don't know what we want to do with it yet. I love watching your journey with your house and it is making us very excited and inspired.
As people we are get to ingrained to how things are "supposed to be" and it is "weird" that people would chose to re-label the rooms in their house to not the specs that were given. They are just boxes. We can put what we want in them. 😊
Hahaha my windows do that too when an airplane passes over and my house happens to be in the direct path for its shadow. I mean I'm not saying it's NOT a ghost who knows lols. Only that I see this phenomenon about once a week in my recently built subdivision house.

I too was obsessed with the green velvet Article couch. But I have a cat and could never spend so much on something that could be so easily ruined. My solution has been the IKEA Karlstad, with fully removable upholstery, and aftermarket replacement covers. You can get them in all kinds of colors and materials (even green velvet) on Etsy and other sites. The couch itself is $350 new from IKEA, but also commonly pops up on the local secondhand marketplace! I also found someone giving away free white Karlstad covers, and I plan to dye them to my exact shade of green.

You get used to it. Especially if you've always lived in a cooler environment. On the flipside whenever I'm somewhere hot I don't even want to be outdoors away from AC at all.

You said in a video you bought chairs on Facebook. I just wanted to mention that I bought 17 kitchen cabinets for $400 from someone on Facebook who was removing them to install a new kitchen. They were 15 years old but were solid oak and Amish made. They were very dark but I painted them all. My husband and I have been renovating houses for almost 50 years. Like you said you don't have to spend a lot if you are willing to do the work. Good luck Ariel.

I have the smaller version of that green couch you want, but I have it in the navy blue velvet. The only thing I’m going to say about it is the velvet doesn’t wear as well as my partner and I would have liked. It could be because this panini has had us just lounging all the time so we’ve been sitting in it a lot, but it shows wear pretty quickly 🥲 Very comfy but just something to keep in mind since it is so expensive.
We’ve lived in our large house from 1874 since 2005. We are just at the point where I feel like it’s finally finished in the past year or so. Slow and steady is the only way to handle an old house when you’re doing it yourself, especially if you’re doing it properly and not just bandaid style fixes.

I am an old independent woman and love seeing young women who are also independent conquering the world. I too had an older small home on my own for 22 yrs and LOVED IT! First thing I did was go to our local Vo-Tech school ( before UA-cam home improvement how- to videos) and took a home repair course series. I learned wiring, plumbing, how to use lots of tools and confidence!!! You've got this. Now I sold it all and travel( debt free) full time in my new rv. I was supposed to come to Nova Scotia last summer... but alas Covid. Borders from U.S. still closed. Enjoying sunny Florida rigqht now and hope to get up your way next later this year. Fun story: when I was around 6 years old we lived in a rented home but the old lady in the house next to us died and we were really close to here so my parents bought her house and we spent about two years renovating it to become our amazing home. Annnyywayy, during that time I was also obsessed with Cornelia Funke's book series Wild Chicks and desperately wanted to be the main character so as soon as the property was ours I begged my parents so please let me have chickens in the garden. They said yes and so my three chickens basically lived under constant renovations and in a garden that was mostly a dumping ground but I was an extremely happy child and they were also happy once the garden became an actual garden again and they could run around and eat worms. It was great
I live in Nova Scotia too and let me tell you, you found a real gem with this house! Even though NS is filled with old, beautiful homes with tons of character, they aren't often for sale sadly, and when they do go up for sale, they get snatched up pretty quickly. You got so lucky! You should totally reach out to Article about partnering for a living room makeover! You definitely have a big enough audience, I know you're more of a book channel than a home reno channel, but I think an argument could be made to them that you'd be reaching a new audience that other DIY channels don't hit.
It will take years to fix up your house. And when you get it done, you will want to tackle some of your earlier projects again, because you have lived with it and discovered that there are things that you would do differently. And, that is a good thing. Technology will change, styles will change, you will want to take better advantage of natural light, etc. Life is about the journey. BTW, I am thankful that my laundry isn’t upstairs. I would rather clean out from a burst or overflowing pipe from my cement floor in the garage than have a second floor washing machine leak and destroy the floor upstairs and the ceiling downstairs, and possibly destroy the basement ceiling as well.

We did the same thing but in the US. Moved from Washington state to Maine in January after looking in our area for a year or so. We found a great old farmhouse in need of some love. It’s got some acreage and a brook, too.

Don't forget your land too! 2 acres, the type of land, it seems to be flat, useable land, and you have a stream running on it! Nothing like having your own cottage- Heaven! BTW- Chickens are fun, they have their own individual personalities :)
If you don't notice any active cutting around the beaver pond it's pretty safe to say the lodge is dead or not used anymore and you can pull the dam without fear of them rebuilding. However that doesn't mean you won't get a new family up there eventually. Have fun pulling the dam, beavers are good at what they do. I also love my Wonder Bar, I don't have the one with the fancy bend, but it is also one of my favorite tools!! Plus having a house, especially an old house that needs TLC a lot of fun is learning and learning about the skills you need to do the work. Someone will always have more experience or a better way to do something. Doesn't mean your way is less valid or the experience not rewarding. I like this series and am glad you are levelling with us about the costs of things as you go. I just hope you are making sure to build things to code for Nova Scotia. Especially for the things like any insulation and plumbing you might have to do.

I definitely recommend looking up your options regarding the beaver dam. Where I live (in the Unites States), it is illegal to destroy a beaver damn on your property without permission from certain government bodies.

They use Celsius instead of Fahrenheit so by US standards its 30-28 degrees out which really is not that bad compared to the negatives

As people we are get to ingrained to how things are "supposed to be" and it is "weird" that people would chose to re-label the rooms in their house to not the specs that were given. They are just boxes. We can put what we want in them. 😊

Hahaha my windows do that too when an airplane passes over and my house happens to be in the direct path for its shadow. I mean I'm not saying it's NOT a ghost who knows lols. Only that I see this phenomenon about once a week in my recently built subdivision house.

Ariel! I recommend buying a hammock for the back deck. We got two cheap ones at the beginning of the pandemic and I have spent SO much time reading in them!!

I live in a place where 20ºC is too cold (seriously). Watching you with no winter clothes saying that -1ºC is okay made me freeze only imagining it.
as a Canadian you get used to going out for short periods in very cold weather because it's too much of a hassle to get your boots and jacket on just to take out the garbage XD

Also on renovation cost VS new (my partner and I are also renovating an older house), when you reno you get the style and look you want AND new builds are often full of cheap and boring materials

I also love green couches and I’ve found one for $600 from structube. I know they have locations in Calgary so I’m sure there’s one near you! They have a few different styles, but it’s a good option! Can’t wait to see how the house turns out.

I too was obsessed with the green velvet Article couch. But I have a cat and could never spend so much on something that could be so easily ruined. My solution has been the IKEA Karlstad, with fully removable upholstery, and aftermarket replacement covers. You can get them in all kinds of colors and materials (even green velvet) on Etsy and other sites. The couch itself is $350 new from IKEA, but also commonly pops up on the local secondhand marketplace! I also found someone giving away free white Karlstad covers, and I plan to dye them to my exact shade of green.

You get used to it. Especially if you've always lived in a cooler environment. On the flipside whenever I'm somewhere hot I don't even want to be outdoors away from AC at all.

You said in a video you bought chairs on Facebook. I just wanted to mention that I bought 17 kitchen cabinets for $400 from someone on Facebook who was removing them to install a new kitchen. They were 15 years old but were solid oak and Amish made. They were very dark but I painted them all. My husband and I have been renovating houses for almost 50 years. Like you said you don't have to spend a lot if you are willing to do the work. Good luck Ariel.

In Sweden we have them in the bathroom or in a laundry room :)

I have the smaller version of that green couch you want, but I have it in the navy blue velvet. The only thing I’m going to say about it is the velvet doesn’t wear as well as my partner and I would have liked. It could be because this panini has had us just lounging all the time so we’ve been sitting in it a lot, but it shows wear pretty quickly 🥲
Very comfy but just something to keep in mind since it is so expensive.
We’ve lived in our large house from 1874 since 2005. We are just at the point where I feel like it’s finally finished in the past year or so. Slow and steady is the only way to handle an old house when you’re doing it yourself, especially if you’re doing it properly and not just bandaid style fixes.

I am an old independent woman and love seeing young women who are also independent conquering the world. I too had an older small home on my own for 22 yrs and LOVED IT! First thing I did was go to our local Vo-Tech school ( before UA-cam home improvement how- to videos) and took a home repair course series. I learned wiring, plumbing, how to use lots of tools and confidence!!! You've got this. Now I sold it all and travel( debt free) full time in my new rv. I was supposed to come to Nova Scotia last summer... but alas Covid. Borders from U.S. still closed. Enjoying sunny Florida rigqht now and hope to get up your way next later this year. Fun story: when I was around 6 years old we lived in a rented home but the old lady in the house next to us died and we were really close to here so my parents bought her house and we spent about two years renovating it to become our amazing home. Annnyywayy, during that time I was also obsessed with Cornelia Funke's book series Wild Chicks and desperately wanted to be the main character so as soon as the property was ours I begged my parents so please let me have chickens in the garden. They said yes and so my three chickens basically lived under constant renovations and in a garden that was mostly a dumping ground but I was an extremely happy child and they were also happy once the garden became an actual garden again and they could run around and eat worms. It was great
We moved into a 109 year-old house in August! Old houses are built better typically and I love the character.
I live in Nova Scotia too and let me tell you, you found a real gem with this house! Even though NS is filled with old, beautiful homes with tons of character, they aren't often for sale sadly, and when they do go up for sale, they get snatched up pretty quickly. You got so lucky! Especially with that beautiful property you're on. These videos are so fun and inspiring, so thank you for making them!

Fireplace pants/trousers: buy a 9 inch plexiglass cube and seal the trousers inside the cube & keep on display. *Include fragments of other found scraps, anything from a crawl space. Could be FUN

You should totally reach out to Article about partnering for a living room makeover! You definitely have a big enough audience, I know you're more of a book channel than a home reno channel, but I think an argument could be made to them that you'd be reaching a new audience that other DIY channels don't hit.
It will take years to fix up your house. And when you get it done, you will want to tackle some of your earlier projects again, because you have lived with it and discovered that there are things that you would do differently. And, that is a good thing. Technology will change, styles will change, you will want to take better advantage of natural light, etc. Life is about the journey.
BTW, I am thankful that my laundry isn’t upstairs. I would rather clean out from a burst or overflowing pipe from my cement floor in the garage than have a second floor washing machine leak and destroy the floor upstairs and the ceiling downstairs, and possibly destroy the basement ceiling as well.
As a home owner you’re never really “done” working on your home. There’s ALWAYS SOMETHING 😂

Lol me just remembering Canadians measure temp in Celsius. So still cold but -1° C is like 30° F and -1° F is like -18° C. Definitely makes a difference.
As a person that works on old buildings for a living I can confirm that I find old clothes in them often! Got a good chuckle out of that haha
We did the same thing but in the US. Moved from Washington state to Maine in January after looking in our area for a year or so. We found a great old farmhouse in need of some love. It’s got some acreage and a brook, too.

Don't forget your land too! 2 acres, the type of land, it seems to be flat, useable land, and you have a stream running on it! Nothing like having your own cottage- Heaven! BTW- Chickens are fun, they have their own individual personalities :)
If you don't notice any active cutting around the beaver pond it's pretty safe to say the lodge is dead or not used anymore and you can pull the dam without fear of them rebuilding. However that doesn't mean you won't get a new family up there eventually. Have fun pulling the dam, beavers are good at what they do. I also love my Wonder Bar, I don't have the one with the fancy bend, but it is also one of my favorite tools!! Plus having a house, especially an old house that needs TLC a lot of fun is learning and learning about the skills you need to do the work. Someone will always have more experience or a better way to do something. Doesn't mean your way is less valid or the experience not rewarding. Love the channel Ariel and love the reno videos, can't wait to see what you get done this summer.
I would love a video of the resources you’ve used to learn the skills you need to renovate! Like tearing up the floor and how to properly sand and paint for longevity etc etc
I like this series and am glad you are levelling with us about the costs of things as you go. I just hope you are making sure to build things to code for Nova Scotia. Especially for the things like any insulation and plumbing you might have to do.

I definitely recommend looking up your options regarding the beaver dam. Where I live (in the Unites States), it is illegal to destroy a beaver damn on your property without permission from certain government bodies.
"The removal of beaver dams and beaver debris from a watercourse does not require an Approval
from NSDEL, providing there is no alteration of the watercourse such as modifications to the bed
or banks of the brook. " I'm all good!
