Ariel works from home. So she made the wise decision to move over 3,000 miles away to a place where the real estate is more affordable. Are you studying a field where you can work from home? If not, you still might take a page from Ariel’s book, and look for work in places where the real estate is affordable. That would give you the opportunity to move to the area, and see what you like and dislike in the real estate market before you buy. Owning your own home is doable, if you’re smart.
@@pattimessenger6214 The original commenter also mentioned that they're a student... As a student myself it's definitely not very doable to pursue being a homeowner, no matter how smart you are about it. Ariel, being the common example here, did not purchase a house while pursuing an undergrad or graduate degree, but did it after both of those things were complete. Not to mention, drawing from my own experiences as a student, life is still super uncertain at this point- definitely not the best time to settle down. So yes, while it is possible to be crafty and buy a house young, sometimes- no matter how much you may want to own a home- you also have to be realistic about timing, and not rush into it.
I used to get so confused playing the sims when I was younger like "why does decorating a room increase a sims mood or the environment bar?" I was like "this is stupid why do we need that?" But now that I'm older I understand it 😂! When I decorate a room it literally makes me so happy to be in that room with my plants and art haha!
Rugs are sometimes not the full size of the rooms so what families use to do is take color from the rug and paint the areas that would show where the rug does not cover. That is why the floor is painted that way. I also hope with that cut out of the flower you put in a frame.
Oh WOW!!!!!!! So that's why the floor of my office in my old house was exactly like the floor of Ariel's bedroom I didn't know that and wondered that for many years!!!
Nice job. The old floor was "real" linoleum. We now call vinyl sheet flooring "lino", but it's not. Linoleum is a wonderful product (and can still be purchased (but is now very expensive) and lasted years but had a tendency to get brittle and the edges might curl. Linoleum is also totally green, not like vinyl products. It was also often laid down as a floating sheet on the floor (not glued down) much like a rug. Linseed oil is one of the ingredients in linoleum,(along with cork dust, wood flour and gums on a burlap or canvas backing) hence the name. And yes,all natural.
Love this! A pro tip for anymore trim painting: if you take the tape off before it dries, you won’t get as much peeling from dry paint/enamel! I learned this after helping my parents repaint all the rooms in their house 😅
Love how the room turned out! It's cool seeing you put in your quirky personality into a vintage home. Note: before sanding up another floor, you may want to do a test for lead paint. Old homes = old safety regulations.
funny little thing: the song playing when Ariel is ripping off the old flooring is actually a very popular Flemish/Dutch children's song celebrating the arrival of Saint Nicholas :)
"This is pleasant as heck, look at me!" I'm so happy for you! It is SO pleasant and such calming vibes. I don't have a tv either in my room- honestly, I don't even have one in the house, I just use my laptop. It's just so much nicer having calming colors and pictures to look at. I just adore the fact that you had the thought of saving a piece of that horrid flooring. Such a wonderful reminder of those who shared that space in yesteryear. I hope in decades from now someone will marvel at your pink floor!
Omg, I got so nervous that you tore up the flooring without a mask. Especially when you don’t know what it is made of or what crazy old dust is underneath. Glad you bought masks for the sanding . Be safe!
I love it Ariel! What I love the most about your house renovation is that it feels 100% you. Not doing the same thing that everyone else is doing but truly following your style and gut feeling. AND IT LOOKS AMAZING! Great work, can't wait to see the office.
My cousin's house had painted floors (like a periwinkle blue) and I thought it was the coolest thing. Now that I've seen how beautiful your painted floors are too I HAVE to do it in my future home! I love it! 😍
How do you not knit yet? 😂 your whole serene room vibe and especially that perfect pink chair looking out a window with a basket waiting to be filled with wool is just total knitter dreams. 💕
I am obsessed with the pink and white - also the theme of my studio apartment although I don’t have the guts to go for pink floors - and the fact that you always rock the funnest nail colors while you’re doing all this house Reno 💕💅
Very cute. Love the floor. Consider putting a little round table, lamp and a vintage needle point footstool in your reading corner. It will make it so cozy!
Helloooo! I don’t know if the painted boarder is going to be addressed again later in the video or if you’ve found out by now.. but the reason for it is because they used to nail carpets to the centre of the room 🙂
Just found you today. You are a joy to watch. Such authenticity, such rawness and happiness. The fact that you've had a following before even being a DYI-er or a renovator makes watching you do this process even more impressive. You are so refreshing, adore the house, adore your love of home & family.
Yes girl the whole room is pleasant as heck. 😂 I love it! And good move on swapping the TV for a picture. I’ve never been fond of TVs in bedrooms myself.
Ariel 😭 I know your videos from two years ago and I loved them but I wasn’t into booktube because I wasn’t actively reading. Somehow I stumbled upon your channel while watching decluttering videos and saw what happened with you moving out & rennovating. I feel so much joy and happiness that you’ve found this home and it’s so PRETTY AND UR TASTE IS TOP TIER 🥺 I’m definitely gonna binge watch your videos this summer, one week of uni left and I will also binge watch the book ones because guess what? Summer’s the only time I have to read. Anyway, I love you and your videos make me happy. I know I’m just a stranger but I relate to you and I hope you’re always healthy and well 🤍 love from kuwait
I love watching your house vids. This turned out so cute!! The pink floor is genius-tbh one of the most fun parts of buying a house is painting it whatever colors you want. And I think we should definitely make “frame hauls” a thing. I’m a former picture framer and I’m always on the lookout for good used frames.
What you're peeling up is called oilcloth or duck cloth. It was a particularly thick cloth that you would paint over and then you could put down varnish (polyurethane and varathane was not a thing back then) which would waterproof the cloth and then you would lay it over your floor to keep your floor from getting any damage. This is pre linoleum / pre vinyl. It was a used a lot in farmhouses because tile was expensive and harder to keep the grout clean then oil cloth. You could wipe it down, you could mop it, all the things you can do with linoleum you could do with oil cloth. You can still find the fabric used for oilcloth and make your own today.
Isn't it weird how the audio improves so dramatically once you put some rugs and furniture in. Anyway, I wonder about the gaps between the floorboards, if you need to seal it with something or other.
I follow a lot of people renovating their homes and I find it so calming and inspiring to watch. Ariel I've followed for years, and it makes me so happy that she is documenting and posting her renovations. I'm obsessed with her videos ❤️
Finally something infectious that should spread; your enthusiasm! The bedroom looks amazing, I loved watching all the updates (yes, I've already watched the closet and shelves videos). So great to see the finally result. And I applaud your decision to not get a fancier tv, but art instead. I love it!
I have just found your channel and you probably won't look at comments a year old, but I can't think of another UA-camr that just makes me smile. Literally sitting here with a smile on my face. You are *pleasant as heck*

I'm really enjoying following along in your process, it's really lovely and inspiring to watch! ☺️🌿 also it's so satisfying seeing how productive you are with renovating your rooms hahah, it definitely takes me much longer personally to do such things individually! also, loved all three of the glasses you showed!

I made a pixel horror game where everything was pink. My brother played it and the first thing he said was, "Who has pink floors?" Now I feel vindicated.
I came back to watch this to prequel your update video and I’m glad I did :) I’m not usually a fan of painting wooden floors but it suits your style for sure. And I think it adds beauty to have the nightstands be subtly different. I love how personalised everything is - so cosy :) I also love columns - in South Africa there are certain communities who add columns to their front porches in a completely ott and unecessary way as soon as they have a bit of extra money to spend on their houses - twirly and baroque monstrosities - I love it so much ❤ Sometimes they’re even installed upside down. It’s a sometimes hobby of mine to drive through these neighbourhoods just to admire them.
I almost screamed when I saw you putting paint on that wood floor... "WHAT are you doing!?!?!?!? And then I realized a few things: A- it's none of my business. B- it's just paint and can be removed. C- it's none of my business. D- I don't live there and it's just paint. E- IT'S NONE OF MY BUSINESS!!! 😁 It turned out really cute, and not every wood floor needs to stay in its original color and finish. This is your home, it should wrap itself around you and make you feel warm and safe and loved. If painting the wood floor in your bedroom gives you that feeling, then girl... Hand me a paintbrush! I also love the fact that the bedroom is the first finished room in the house because with all the work ahead of you, (At the time of the filming of this video I mean.) at the end of the day you need a comfortable place to fall. I can't imagine living and working in the chaos of home renovation and then sleeping in that chaos at night. Now, you can deal with chaos all day and then at night go to your beautiful bedroom and shut the door and leave the chaos in the hall.
Ariel, your room is SOOO cute! 🥺💛 You have such a colorful, artistic eye. I love that this house has become your blank canvas to make into your own vision.
I'm not gonna lie. I'm really happy you didn't put the second lighthouse frame next to the first one. I really like the balance of the room and how they all come together. It's beautiful.
the whole concept of you sitting in a room from the 1850's saying its "2021, theres a pandemic" is so SURREAL GOD WERE REALLY LIVING THROUGH A HISTORIC EVENT. Love your videos so much I wish i was your friend IRL. Love from Toronto!!
The room is perfectly, beautifully done AND in my honest opinion, every single one of those glasses look amazing. The wire rims look especially beautiful on you. Superb job on everything! 👍👷👌👏👏👏
I looove the floors !!! So cute but still classy and can be young or mature it’s just feminine and safe feeling. And the art made out of the flooring I love . I’d have kept a bigger chunk and put it in a frame personally.
My girlfriend said I DIDN'T KNOW PAINTING FLOORS WAS AN OPTION and she loves pink, so I've promised her a pink floor in the future! Loved the video, the house seems to be coming together and I love your original style 😊💜
I have to say, when I first saw the pink floor, I was skeptical. But I think it totally works, because in this kind of house with this kind of floor it makes sense for the floor to be painted. And the pink color you chose looks sophisticated and modern rather than childish. I'm surprised to say I really like it, so good job.
I'm only barely 16 minutes into the video and for some bizarre reason I envisioned that your gorgeous house was as endless and mysterious as the Winchester Mystery House. I can't wait to see all the fun and beautiful things that you do with your HOME! Thank you for sharing your process :)
We had a similar treatment of the floor in our 1870s farmhouse... paint around the edge of a rectangle. I finally figured out there was a permanent rug tacked down to the floor (yes, I had to pull up ALLLLLLLL the staples from the rug).
You have a new subscriber. ✌️ I love your energy, your enthusiasm and the love you have for old houses. I for one love the fact that you bring out the old original wood. Wooden floors are the best. I myself have just wood in my apartment; like wooden floors, walls, ceiling, doors and the frames. And I must say that I love the fact that you are inspired by the houses, furnitures and the colors in the movies based on Jane Austen's book's. I think your house is going to look awesome. Love the vibe you bring to each video you make.
My grandparents had a sink like yours when I was not quite as tall as the countertops. I know there was a drainboard to the right of the sink but not sure it extended to the left but it was awesome. The faucets were wall mounted at the back of the sink. Just SO cool but alas, Gramma had the entire ensemble removedand replaced w typical stainless steel when they renovated. Sad sad sad but what can one do except cry?? They were so awesome!!
Hello!!! The reason they only painted the outer edges of the floorboards is because the inner section was always covered in a large rug. Our house was the same. Often the floorboards in the inner section were left raw and unpolished. Super video! Such a delight 😍
This whole video, the house, the stream and garden, your room, the Monet, the PINK FLOORS...WOW🙌 it gives me such woodland fairy vibes and I love it! 🧚♀️ I wish you all the best for all of your projects to come🤎
Love the room! It would be so cute to put a bunch of different sizes of battery operated candles. Turn on. All the fairy lights and candles at night to read.
I was so excited to see that chair. My mom had a pink chair just like that when I was little. I loved and miss it terribly and I have been searching for one the past couple years. they are so comfy and the perfect reading chair. I hope to find one just like it.
So soothing and restful, well done! It's nice to have a crisp white room! Perhaps you can plant some cutting flowers this spring and have fresh flower arrangements!
The pink floor is so bold and so beautiful!! Would have never thought of it but I'm seriously considering my first flat to have coloured floors now 👌👌👌
I was willed the house I grew up in.I am 61 and graduate from college in Dec. So, now I have the time to work on my house . Finished painting 2 bathrooms and 2 closets. I have a den and a dining room then I will be finished. Be proud of yourself for all of your hard work. Believe me it is HARD work.
I did a double take when i was watching this because i've seen that chair in her room before! my grandma and grandpa own that exact chair! This is so cool! I love Ariel's style so much, that's such a cool coincidence
'pleasant as heck' may be the most Canadian thing I've ever heard.

the whole concept of you sitting in a room from the 1850's saying its "2021, theres a pandemic" is so SURREAL GOD WERE REALLY LIVING THROUGH A HISTORIC EVENT.
Holy shit that wire frame glasses were perfect on you
I have to say, when I first saw the pink floor, I was skeptical. But I think it totally works, because in this kind of house with this kind of floor it makes sense for the floor to be painted. And the pink color you chose looks sophisticated and modern rather than childish. I'm surprised to say I really like it, so good job.
I can't believe how happy I was when I saw this video posting.... I was debating between reading and UA-cam, so thank you, now I'm not reading lol
I'm only barely 16 minutes into the video and for some bizarre reason I envisioned that your gorgeous house was as endless and mysterious as the Winchester Mystery House. I can't wait to see all the fun and beautiful things that you do with your HOME! Thank you for sharing your process :)
It looks like they were trying to paint a rug look on the floor. I love what you did with the room. The floor is fantastic.
We had a similar treatment of the floor in our 1870s farmhouse... paint around the edge of a rectangle. I finally figured out there was a permanent rug tacked down to the floor (yes, I had to pull up ALLLLLLLL the staples from the rug).
Everything about this room is perfect! When you opened the pink floor paint, I may have gasped. It's beautiful Ariel, I'm rooting for you!
You have a new subscriber. ✌️
I love your energy, your enthusiasm and the love you have for old houses.
Pink and dark brown is such a nice colour combo, so as much as you say you don't like it that small desk looks so good at the very end of your video!
🧚♀️ I wish you all the best for all of your projects to come🤎
I LOVE the pinks of the floor + chair + the flowers in the monet
I saw the paint come out of the can and thought oh my what's she thinking!!! It's beautiful. I love your room.
The pink color is the PERFECT pink for your floor! I anxiously await your home videos. So happy for this one!
Love the room! It would be so cute to put a bunch of different sizes of battery operated candles. Turn on. All the fairy lights and candles at night to read.
I have the same chair (my mom gave it to me for free!) and I always describe it as "a very strange pink" lol.
Would have never thought of it but I'm seriously considering my first flat to have coloured floors now 👌👌👌
I love how the room turned out! But all I can focus on is the decorative piece on the mantel that looks like the bottom of a paper plate.
Obsessed with the final look! The pink! The cottagecore vibes!
