Very interesting reminder about "shame paintings". This video got me thinking about other modern examples, I reckon anyone who's had the misfortune of stumbling into Drama UA-cam would have seen some thumbnails that also fit the bill! Modern social punishment is definitely still of the "shame" variety. Very cool to see all these examples and progression over time, as always 💜

I wonder if The Hanged Man needs to be recontextualitzed for the 21st century, as we no longer hang people involuntarily by their heels in punishment. Today's hanged man is either 'acting the fool' by standing on his head or hanging from the monkey bars, or is taking part in competitive gymnastics, acrobatics, Olympic competition, Circus trapeze, and all of these voluntarily. Of course, they might also have inadvertently stepped into a hunter's trap. To me, all that changes the messaging.
Even that we don't hang people by their ankles for punishment these days (well, I can only hope), public "shaming" remains rather strong in our times...Acrobatics, trapeze, yoga - YES, Robin! The Hanged Man shows up for me a lot in the readings I do about my yoga practice, workshops and retreats..but then the interpretation always depends on the context of the question and the cards next to it.
