I recently took a 7 hour women's beginner marine diesel workshop, given by and for women. We learned how to change the engine oil, filters and impellers. Thank you for what seemed like a continuation of that class! Nice job!
This is such a wonderful video.. Can we do it all again please!!! Did you ever hear anyone say that after servicing an engine! It was a day I will never forget...’filled and fuelled’ with so much fun and all whilst learning new skills. Sophie I think we made the dream team duo servicing parts it was brilliant!.... thank you Ryan for being with us the whole day filming.. I am going to miss you both very much.. Philippa xx
You guys need to take this show on the road (actually the sea). So funny you loose track of the fact that you are giving viewers a valuable lesson. And, I might add, you two are far, far more pleasant on the eyes than, say, Ryan.
I loved the Sound Effects when Philppa was Lubricating the Impeller... You two can service my Engine any time!!! 🥰😍🥰😍🥰 Thanks for taking the time to make us all Giggle a little. Cheers 🍻
Just have to tell you that I was changing the oil on my boat today (a Jeanneau 39 with the same Yanmar engine). I was pumping away and hardly any oil was coming out through the dipstick tube, so I pulled up this video and the first things Sophie says is to loosen the oil cap so there won't be a vacuum. Doh!! You literally saved me about 2 hours. Thanks!!!
I was doing an engine service years ago Was just in an old pair of shorts. A lady friend who sailed with me an my buddy came by and asked if she could help but wearing a bikini and a white shirt over it. I said she would get all dirty and should go change. She change by dumping the shirt and her bikini top. Somehow I manage to get everything done right the first time. And I got a reward
Okay ladies I started my Maritime career in the engine room there is no way that you're going to tell me that your friend has never touched a motor before right it's all okay very instructive very professional and an outstanding final job
Maybe a lot of humour but a very informative video. One of the best I've watched in a long time, Two apparently novice mechanics who did the work very well indeed. Congratulations.
I know I have seen Philippa & her Husband on another channel here but I can't recall the name of it. Still, this was a funny video and I know we all learned allot with this one. The Gloves that Philippa was wearing with the new label sticker still on was hilarious. Real men don't wear gloves, that's why we have oil and grime under our fingernails. When I saw the gloves, I was laughing so hard, then saw the sticker still on it and nearly sprayed water out my nose. It was also funny that Ryan was lingering in the background the entire time watching over the entire process. No way he would truly leave that beautiful engine in the hands of these women, hahahaha. It takes 2 women 6 hours to do a 1000-mile maintenance and 1 man, 1 hour, lol. But kudos on Ryan for using this at 20:16 to motivate the ladies.
Ryan you're one of the luckiest men I know of. Fyi draining the other petcocks got the coolant would've helped removing all the coolant and there should be a block drain. That's the cleanest diesel with a thousand hours on it I've seen in my life. Enjoy the float
Ryan, take one of those antifreeze jugs and cut the side off of it so it fits under the oil filter. That way when you unscrew the old filter all of the oil drains into it instead of onto your spill pad and floor. You can also use it for the fuel filters. Also, use new oil on the seal, not the old oil. The solids in the old oil can prevent the new seal from sealing, which will be a nasty leak. Ill speculate and say your coolant is that color because you need an anode in your cooling system. Otherwise, awesome video. It’s fun to see people doing things that they normally don’t do. 😊
One thing you should add to the sea water pump is a small strainer between it and the heat exchanger. So if the impeller breaks the strainer will catch it and you won't have to go fishing for them. Something to consider is an oil filter relocation kit. This will let you take it off and on from the bottom and not the side
I’d love to make some ,,,,,,, comments lol Nice job ladies Just a side note There’s two colours of nappies white and grey The white nappies are for hydrocarbon based liquids only they won’t absorb water based fluid so you can absorb fuel and oil off water say in your bilge Get some of the grey ones are for antifreeze
Don’t know how easy they are for you to find but puppy house training mats are also a good option for catching oil. They usually have a layer of plastic on the bottom so nothing leaks through. This is both a bonus and a problem. The bonus is that you can reuse the mats since the bottom is still clean. The problem is that you have a plastic to dispose of.
Carry a quart of Automatic Transmission fluid to fill the fuel filters..... It will lubricate the the entire system and injectors. We Have been doing this for years servicing Simi Trucks and i do it on my sailboat.... It works great when under way and the fuel filter has to be changed. I always carry a couple quarts of Trans fluid. Good work and loved the show. :)
Thank you SO MUCH for showing my wife that she also can do 1000 hour service on the engine. Buys me time for other jobs😝 We hope the green gue mystery that was formerly known as coolant will be solved soon. Looks not pretty.. Great video girls... laughed my socks off😘🌈
Coolant colour should never be the basis for deciding if anti freeze is correct. Different manufacturers colour the coolant for their own benefit, there is also many different versions of various colours of fluid. The spec of the oil is the determining factor along with manufacturers approvals. When changing the coolant and using another brand always perform a system flush. The sea water impeller needs to be greased not only to make it easy to install, but also so it doesn't run dry on startup till the seawater gets up. If the impeller overheats from running dry it can break up. Other than that great video, good to see the women getting in on the action
This was excellent and very interesting, all of these endless tasks and chores aboard the craft, ... I see them as adding spice to life. p.s. .. btw, the very first frame of the video, I love the color of the fan belt pulleys on your motor, metallic red with silver bolts .. very snappy. .... Cheers! 🌸 🌼 🌻 🌞
Old farmer trick. Put a plastic bag (zip lock) over the old filter and unscrew it right into the bag along with any drips. None on your hands or in the bilge. Ryan, electric lift pump in the fuel line means no hand pumping and is a back up if the mechanical one fails. $20 well spent.
Hi Mark. Thanks for this great tip. Never thought about it. I sometimes take a 2 liter bottle cut the top off and let the fuel filters fall right in. Works well. Ryan
Now THAT is how it's done!! Loved it :) Loved the editing too - like an episode of All Girls Garage :) You two make a great team. I hope we will get to see you two tackle other projects. I am curious about the coolant. That is a weird color... So fun!! F
Stick a 1 litre plastic bottle (cut the neck off first) over (around/ under) the 2 piece fuel filter so that when you undo the bolt the filter & the bowl , plus fuel remains in the bottle. You did not clean the surface of the pump housing for the impeller change. Normally one would & change the gasket at the same time to prevent leaks. When draining oil check how much you have removed as you may not have removed it all & you may not have got the suction hose end in exactly the correct position, thus leaving some in the sump. It also gives you a more accurate guide of how much to put back. When pumping fuel back to bleed the system you need to ensure that the flywheel is at the correct position, otherwise the pump will not pump as it is not on the pump "stroke" point of the cycle. Oh & finally-- could we have a bit of cleavage when Ryan is not looking when you are doing these vids 😁 cos you 2 are gorgeous
Probably needed Waylon Jennings singing "Put another log on the fire" in the background - Ryan you da man. Now we need to see Ryan doing one of Sophies jobs.
Sophie you just forgot to fill up the oil filter with new oil.....not to the top but just a little bit so the engine won't suck up air when it starts for the first time. It's an old mech trick.
In addition to draining the coolant from the engine, you also need to drain the coolant from the hot water system, (another 1-1.5 litres). Nice feminine touch for a normally blokey video.
Also pre filling the fuel filter helps a ton and if u want to clean ur injectors something that works good is get the engine hot like uncomfortable to work on hot then change the closest fuel filter to the pump and add sea foam fuel cleaner Or any other u trust fill 30 percent of the filter with cleaner top the rest off with fuel when ur filter is tight start the engine for short amount of time less than a minute and shit it off let it rest for 5 minutes and repeat that until the cleaner is gone
when changing the oil filter I place a one kilo yogurt container in the bilge, it catches all the oil and keeps the mess to a minimum. I also prelube the gasket on the new filter so they can be quickly swapped.
Philippa is the cutest woman on all sailing channels! More of her.
Sailing Aequus on UA-cam
Both the ladies are beautiful, sexy and smart. But Sophie is the one I’d want to take home to meet Mama!
That was the best maintenance video I seen in a long time.

Oh my god "filled and fueled", hahahaha! :D Literally, my life will end when you guys leave Bonaire.... :D (oh I really hope we catch you again soon!)
Great video guys, can't wait to share it with my kids :) very cute :)

White shirts with no mess on them. Very impressive.
Yeah should have gone with oldest mankiest top available :)
I know, right?
That is ballsy lol I have all black for work clothes 🤣🤣🤣 maybe I'm just a wreck lol
This has surely been done digitally in postproduction. Clean white clothes on boat is a myth!
I loved the Sound Effects when Philppa was Lubricating the Impeller... You two can service my Engine any time!!! 🥰😍🥰😍🥰
Thanks for taking the time to make us all Giggle a little. Cheers 🍻
Nothing more fun than watching Sophie and Phillipa together.
That's the cleanest engine I've ever seen with 1000 hours on it.
This episode deserves an award for musical score.

2 girls, tools, lube and an oil change. This episode should have come with a warning label !!! 🤣🤣🤣
Two chicks, pristine white tops on, changing fuel filters, oil, oil filters with fabric gloves on, still clean white tops on at the end - impressed.

Oh that music was cracking me up...good job y'all.
Thanks ladies.. the prettiest mechanics around!
Nice job ladies. Ryan is lucky to have desiel technicians like you.
Right?! Although, he was mostly sleeping through the process 😂
@@RyanSophieSailing that is just a sign of his supreme confidence in your mechanical abilities
Great video guys , from a Yanmar employee , greatly appreciated
I wish all technical videos could be made like this... great job ladies 👍😂😂😂😂
Most entertaining maintenance shows ever!
The background giggling at the 9:20 part was amazing! Great work!
Ryan you're one of the luckiest men I know of. Fyi draining the other petcocks got the coolant would've helped removing all the coolant and there should be a block drain. That's the cleanest diesel with a thousand hours on it I've seen in my life. Enjoy the float
Surprisingly both ended up clean, but not the smartest thing to mess with the engine room with white t-shirts! Well done, a clean job!
Never tell a woman in a tight tank top to change into overalls.
I agree!
Oh the delicious aroma of chanel diesel

Can you buy these strainers off the shelf? I assume they are inline?.
You ladies did a great job, it's good to be familiar with the mechanics of the engine and the other essential aspects of the boat.
First of all, Ryan... that engine looks SUUUUUUPERB!! Second, I have a Nanni diesel so why did I enjoy a Yanmar maintenance? GJ Sophie and Phillipa!
So am I wrong to thumb this up within the first second. 😍😍 Aye aye aye. So happy rite now.
Oh yeah and mr. Ryan just sit back and enjoy the show because I'm enjoying the out of it
Awesome fun. Doing my first service of the new boat.
This is absolutely the best video i have seen that demonstrates the many ways electric propulsion is better than diesel.
By far the BEST boat maintenance video EVER!! Please Girls... can you do some more :)
This was hilarious. I want to see more vlogs with you two, you're very funny together.
Very beautiful 1000h engine service!
Nothing better than 2 beautiful ladies and a engine.
Nice job, ladies. You got fun as well.
You two ladies are a great team. If you are ever in the San Francisco Bay Area drop me a line. I'll let you change the oil and coolant in my Ferrari.
I’d love to make some ,,,,,,, comments lol

Just a side note

Oj! Vilka brudar :) What talented women and it is not possible without commenting on how good they look.
Excellent engine service and good use of "comments for algorithm".
You girls are amazing, can't wait to do this myself you made it look easy thanks
It’s super easy Liz, you totally got this and I’m sure you’ll do awesome! :)
like your friend :-) great job trained my girls to change their own car oil. :-)
This is one of best video. For me as person who not good with engines it was really encouraging!
I think we need to change the name of this channel to "Sophie and Philippa Sailing." Sorry Ryan. You're hopelessly outclassed.
