Tony, Geezer, Bill, & Dio all considered this a new band, & weren’t intending on being called Black Sabbath, because, as you say, it doesn’t sound like Black Sabbath. But the record deal that Tony had was under the Black Sabbath name, so the record company insisted they use it. Best to think of it as a different, but also awesome, band. Worth noting that the different production sound (like the toms) is a lot to do with Producer Martin Birch. Who produced most of Iron Maiden’s classic albums, Deep Purple’s Machinehead, & a host of others. Was probably the biggest producer in rock music at the time
Just for correct credits, Bill Ward did the studio work on this album and it's him you're listening to on this studio recording. Appice came along as the tour drummer after Ward dropped out. He then served as the drummer from that point on. Other drummer's with Sabbath were the late Cozy Powell and Bev Bevin. "Children of the Sea" is worth a listen.
I think Bill Ward left because Dio wanted him to sound like a normal rock drummer. Heaven and hell, in terms of drums, sounds like a lot of other bands, it doesn't sound like Bill Ward. I assume this made Bill Ward not work with Dio.
Bill recorded the album, but left during the tour in support of the album. He was replaced by Vinnie who went on to record Mob Rules, Dehumanizer and The Devil You Know.
Love the Ronnie James Dio era, tons of great songs. I would also suggest you check out Dio's previous band called Rainbow. Rainbow was a creation by Ritchie Blackmore (from Deep Purple). Blackmore brought on drummer Cozy Powell for their second album and the trio was such a mix of talent. Highly suggest checking out the song "Stargazer", "Kill the King", "Light in the Black and "Gates of Babylon". Rainbow live concerts were magical, check out their 1977 Munich concert footage with songs like "Mistreated", "Man on the Silver Mountain", "Catch the Rainbow" and "Still I'm Sad" which features a Cozy Powell solo doing the "1812 Overture"
Yes, as others have said, it IS Bill Ward on the album. I suggest listening to Neon Knights from this album. Side note- Bill was deep in his substance issues at the time, and has said that he does not remember anything of recording the album. Glad he got the help he needed.
Bill Ward quit on August 21st 1980 and got on his bus without saying goodbye except for a phone call to Ronnie James Dio telling him he was off. I saw them on September 26th Charlotte Coliseum North Carolina and they were amazing. John Bonham had passed away the day before on September 25th 1980 the show was dedicated to the memory of John Bonham and Vinny did a amazing drum tribute to him and the band performed a blistering 2 hour performance that evening. Dio small in size, huge singing voice and bigger heart!🤘
It’s Bill Ward on the album. Vinny replaced Ward when he quit the band in the middle of the tour. Vinny stayed on with the band & recorded the next album, The Mob Rules. Dio’s an amazing singer. His work with Rainbow in the 70s is terrific. That’s another act you should check out, especially since the drummer was the great Cozy Powell.
Carmine pronounces his name as Apiece, Vinny as Appisee - and this isn't Vinny. This is Bill Ward on the studio version. Vinny joined Sabbath during the tour for Heaven and Hell, and his debut was on Mob Rules.
Bill Ward was on drums for the album and left the band August 21, 1980 due to severe alcoholism. Both his parents had died previously that year. He was out until 1989 when he made his first solo album.
I remember an interview years ago with Bill Ward saying he was so messed up on drugs and alcohol during the recording of heaven and hell that he barely remembers making it. It was Bill on the studio version. I think Vinnie took over for the tour.
After Appice and after Dio there was the explosive Cozy Powell on drums and the greatly underrated Tony Martin on vocals. The most underappreciated and underrated lineup and albums ever.
Mike G: Powell was not in Sabbath until 1989, Eric Singer was their next drummer & Tony Martin blows, he was Sabbaths 2nd biggest mistake, Martin is 'Underrated for a reason & that is that he extremely sucks.
After the Dio years Sabbath did one album with the Deep Purple singer called Born Again... It sounds like a sort of return to the style they had with Ozzy... I like that album quite a bit... Try the song Trashed
It's the only kinda acceptable non ozzy Sabbath album. Terrible production but great music. Still not Sabbath though. Trashed is hands down the best non ozzy Sabbath song.
This is Bill Ward!!! Although he has said he barely remembers recording this album. Alcohol had finally got to him. Vinny Appice did the tour and also the follow up album Mob Rules
It was Bill Ward who did the recording and then quit. They hired Vinnie and BTW Carmine to me was the first heavy metal drummer. Watch Vanilla Fudge You Keep me Hanging On 1967. In 75 my parents bought me a kit because I always tapped my hands and feet, it drove them crazy. Nothing clicked and I sold my kit a year later. Then I heard this album in 80 and I got to play again but didn't have an opportunity. In 82 a Friend of mine who is a drummer needed a place to practice and my parents moved to Florida and I had an empty house and I let him and I immediately went to Heaven and Hell and Molly Hatchet. Long story short a year later my parents moved, in 04 my oldest son bought me a drum kit for my Bday and shocked me and the first album i put on was Heaven and Hell. It's the best, go Bill Ward. FYI by 08 I started to get board with it and then I discovered Opeth and Martin Lopez and to this day I only play this album and all of Martin Lopez's years with Opeth. Check out the entire album of Heaven and Hell and not only do I think they're better than Ozzy years it's Bill Wards best.
Totally different band. Produced by Martin Birch. This is the beginning of what is referred to as the New Wave of Heavy Metal. Forget about the Ozzy era when you listen to this. I challenge you to review a couple of the other tracks on this album. Try Wishing Well or Walk Away, or Die Young. Incredible grooves. But again, this was an absolutely brand new band with Ronnie James Dio at the helm. He and Iommi took the band in an entirely different direction, hence the completely different Bill Ward treatment. Bill was playing within a new set of constraints. To me, he killed it. Listen to any of those tracks I mentioned and ask yourself how another drummer would have handled it. Would have been rubbish. Despite Ward's alcoholism at the time, he still absolutely kills it on this album. He adapted.
It's Ward on drums. He left the band in mid tour bcs he cudn't be in "Black sabbath" without Ozzy, especially playing Original Sabbath songs with anyone else besides Ozzy singing them, particularly the song Black Sabbath. He cudn't do it he felt like he was betraying Ozzy during that song. He was drinking himself to death at that time. He woke up on the street in an alley one morning while on tour and just went home and then to a detox and began his sobriety that he is still on today, with just a few stumbles along the way early on. I love Ward. I think he's my favorite of the bunch! and Im a singer / bass player. Edit: Ward came back after The Mob Rules to record Born Again with Ian Gillan on vocals and fell of the wagon early on during the tour and then dropped off the tour, replaced by Bev Bevan. That was the first Concert I ever went to back in 1983.. 7th row on the flor on Tony's side. Nassau Coliseum NY. It was Soo loud AF! Loudest music I ever heard in my life.
Hi Andrew,Bill Ward plays the drums on this album. And....for so many people Ronnie James Dio is a Metal God.Before he went to Sabbath,he was singer by Elf and Rainbow. After Sabbath he founded his own Band,DIO. Greetings from Germany Sorry for my english.😂
The album 'Technical ecstasy' is generally not people's favourite record by Sabbath, but it IS mine. The style is a little different in so far as there aren't the crunchy riffs and punchy tracks but it is really emotional. I'm wandering if Geezer or Tony was going through stuff with their wife at the time?? Please listen to 'You won't change me' 'Dirty women' and my all time favourite Sabbath track 'Gypsy' - this track just kills me, listen to the subtle use of piano and Tony Iommi's guitar genius. Even after all these years, I still don't know how someone actually wrote the songs on this album, mind blowing ..... you will enjoy it, the album is very deep.
It's Bill Ward on drums on the album - he left after the recording. Vinnie Appice took over after that and played on every other Dio/Sabbath inluding Heaven and Hell (the band)
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Andrew’s long series of videos in which he’s “discovered” Sabbath, during which I’ve come to appreciate Ozzy’s singing and lyrical contribution. Having said that…. Ronnie is a truly amazing vocalist and is my personal favorite hard rock front man of all-time. Definitely an apples to oranges comparison though.
As a die hard Sabbath/ Iommi fan, I did enjoy the Dio years and after. But, it was a different animal. You could tell Bill wasn't himself on this album. I questioned a lot of punching in and out too. Great reaction 🤘
3:29 Andrew, I'm not a drummer and I see the drumm patterns of Bill.. this is Bill Ward !! The one who pushed this on was/is hnot a fan, or he would have known
Hi Andrew. Definitely Bill Ward on the studio version of this song (the one you reviewed), Bill left after this album and Vinnie did the follow up (Mob Rules) album. That said, Bill has recounted numerous times that his alcoholism was so rampant at this point he has little memory of tracking this album. Whomever said that it's Vinnie on drums may be thinking of a live version subsequent to Bill's departure. Cheers
My (original release) copy lists Bill as the drummer - Something went wrong in your info stream . . . But Geezer's playing on this album is worth paying attention to. Dammit - now I need to fire up the phono stage and pull out the vinyl again.
I love Ozzy in and out of Sabbath but damn did Dio work well with them. This song is so so good. Nothing will be better than the four of them together. Dio was more forward in the songs vs an instrument like Ozzy was
Back in the day, I had a great deal of trouble accepting this band being called Black Sabbath, because of that change in sound and style, which to me is more conventional rock songs. The music is good, and Dio is a terrific rock singer, no doubt. But til this day I call this band Black Sabbath with Dio singing.
I love this album, but I will admit not every song sounds like Bill. Indeed, a strong argument can be made that this record is a more suitable follow-up to Rainbow's 1978 album than to Black Sabbath's 1978 album. Bill found Black Sabbath without Ozzy to be a strange place, and he wasn't comfortable in it. This is why lasted only very short stints, and didn't tour.
Yes, this is Bill Ward, not Appice. Ward talked about not liking the direction the band was taking under Dio lyrically, and how he really didn't remember recording Heaven and Hell becuase he was often drunk. His favorite songs from it were Lonely is the Word, and Children of the Sea. He actually did tour with Heaven and Hell to start before leaving soon after, calling Dio to say was at the airport and leaving. That's when Appice joined. He missed all of the Mob Rules period and came back to the band to record Born Again, but didn't tour on that, either.
Bill Ward was the drummer in the studio but they had Vinny while touring due to Bill Wards Drinking problem. Bill Ward stated he can't remember recording this entire album
Bill Ward played on this album. He left mid tour. Vinnie flown in for a show they had in Hawaii and stayed on through the follow up Mob Rules and tour. Then left with Ronnie to form the Dio band. Bill rejoined to record Born Again and couldn't again do the tour and Bev Bevan ex-ELO sat behind the kit on tour. after that it was a revolving door of musicians except for Iommi. The Dio/Appice lineup rejoined for the Dehumanizer album and tour They then left again and Iommi reformed the previous incarnation of the band with Tony Martin on vocals and Cozy Powell on drums.
So a bunch of people have already told you that this is Bill, but you're probably also being impacted by the very different production. Martin Birch, who's best known for producing Iron Maiden's seminal albums, gave them a much more modern (for the time), polished sound.
Bill Ward was on drums on the Born Again album in 1983 but did not stay for the tour. Bill and Ozzy played together for the Live Aid show for a one off show.
Loving the Sabbath reactions and dives into the drumming, one drummer who is amazing live and would love to see your reactions to is Dave Lombardo of Slayer, songs like War Ensemble or South of Heaven at the Big 4 show in 2011 have some incredible work
Watching this reminds me that you should do Stargazer by Rainbow with Cozy Powell (R.I.P.) on drums, Ronnie James Dio on vocals and Richie Blackmore on guitar.
It's Bill on Drums. I have the original album. Ronnie is great and a great human being but the original Sabbath line up is the classic line up. Everything else is another band. Love your channel ...
There's an undeniable change between Ozzy's Sabbath and Dio's. To me it's always been about Ozzy following guitar riffs way more while Dio's vocals are more of a different melodic instrument, they tend to build more elaborate songs imo, while Ozzy's were ... raw-er I guess.
Right. They changed a lot of things with Heaven and Hell, also the riffing style, totally different song writing and Ronnie‘s fantasy lyrics. And they became more commercial, less artistically daring and more self aware. Because of all of these reasons they should have used a different band name imho.
Andrew if you would like to hear some Sabbath thrash I say give the album " Born Again" a spin. A lot of people don't like it but I happen to think it is a good album. The lead singer is Ian Gillan of Deep Purple fame. A few songs are " Disturbing the Priest", " Zero the Hero" or "Trashed"
No matter which drummers, singers or bassists, I still regards each Black Sabbath lead by Tony Iommi for a full range Black Sabbath. The incarnations are very different but always exiting. Even if it turned into a bit of Spinal Tap with the singers. I’ve lost count. 😂
@@Gil334 As a 40 year musician, and a huge fan of Iommi, the early years with Ozzy were the best, those first few albums were ground breaking , it's what Black Sabbath are renowned for. The 4 of them made magic together and wouldn't be the same with any other format.. I love Mob rules, But It's a completely different Animal...
@@MickH60 I never said early Sabbath wasn't the best. That doesn't mean the later stuff wasn't Sabbath too. It's called diversity, growth, moving on. And I'm a 61 year old, junior.🙂
Bro please just do Sabbath bloody sabbath or sabotage, they’re great, they’re the original guys, symptom of the universe is the only track you’ve done off of those 2 awesome albums. It’s the sabbath you love, just do them man!!!
jospeh - great advice! sabbath bloody sabbath is my favorite, and sabotage is my second favorite sabbath album. i love all their albums from 1970 - 1983 (ozzy/dio/gillan). do not care for the glenn hughes/tony martin albums. dehumanizer/the devil you know/13, were o.k. i guess, but rarely ever listen to them.
The drummer here is Bill Ward but Vinnie Appice do the tour ...Bill Ward comeback to Sabbath in 1983 in the lp "Born Again" with Ian Gillan on vocals (yes, Ian Gillan of Deep Purple) Vinnie Appice follow to Dio on his solo albums....but in 1992 Dio and Appice return to Black Sabbath! Vinnie Appice was the Dio´s drummer ... and well, Bill Ward return to Black Sabbath (with Ozzy on 1999)
You are 100% correct about the surnames. Vinnie uses a slightly Americanized version of the traditional Italian pronunciation, but Carmine uses the weirdly Anglicised version Rod Stewart insisted on using for him. Rod Stewart would always introduce Carmine as "a piece", and it stuck.
they also spray painted bill with gold paint then sprayed a clear coat on him as well. They had to rush him to the hospital because all his poors were clogged and he could not breathe
I haven't read about this anywhere, just my opinion, my own narrative probably. Black Sabbath didn't just change members around this album, they were very aware of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and altered their own game, (which was the game that inspired all those NWOBHM bands) to keep up with the sounds of the times.
Hi Andrew..Yes this is Bill Ward on the studio album but Vinnie came aboard for the tours bc sadly Bill Ward was very far gone on booze and substances...They did change the production on this album making it sound up to date to what was happening in the early 80's...Peace ✌️
this is the title track off one of the greatest metal albums of all time. heard this when i was maybe 13 (47 now) and it's literally been one of my top 5 albums ever since. think the tempo fluctuations are either punches or just an artifact of tape speeds on the mix down... pretty certain it's Vinnie on the drums. Lonely is the Word is a beautiful song. this era does feel like a different vibe, a different band even but there's no denying when you hear Iommi and Butler locking in together than it's Sabbath. just a perfect album for me.
Black Sabbath recorded in the studio October 1979 to January 1980 with Bill Ward on the drums. Heaven and Hell released April 18th 1980 and Bill Ward quit while on tour August 21st 1980. Vinny a p p i c e replaced him for the rest of the tour also the recording of the Mob Rules album and tour 1981-82.
Listen to this and then listen to Mob Rules (the album), there's such a stark difference. It's Bill Ward. Without question. Appice is fine, but he's a bog slogger. It's like the difference between Mitch and Buddy playing behind Jimi.
Great reaction/review! As everybody says, this is Bill Ward! Bill left, but also came back for Born Again. I love this album, and the next one, Mob Rules is great too. And Dehumanizer with Dio is worth checking out. Dio was such a force that he made his version of Sabbath unique. Appice went on to play on Dio’s first few solo albums, then came back for Dehumanizer and played in Heaven and Hell with Dio, Iommi, and Butler.
I love 70s Sabbath, but Dio's first two albums with them destroy the earlier material in terms of songwriting and technical ability. They evolved into a monster of a band for a tragically short time, and could even be seen as a beacon to the NWOBHM scene that was peaking around them in the UK. \m/ \m/
Although there was turmoil, they managed to produce a fine piece of work. I consider it the Dio Sabbath band. one of my favourite albums of all time. I don't really think of it as Sabbath. I just love it for what it is. ✌️❤️🤗
I agree with your comments; Black Sabbath just changed after the original lineup split. Great music but a totally different band, and let's not even talk about the post-Dio era 😅🤣 And Dio is one of the best metal vocalists ever. You should totally check out a couple more songs from this album, it's a good one.
I am a huge Sabbath fan and a Dio fan and the Dio years don't feel like Sabbath to me either even though I really like both Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules. My first exposure to them was the Ozzy years. I have a friend who prefers the Dio Sabbath but his first exposure was Heaven and Hell.
Hey Andrew, here's another metal request for ya. The song I'm talking about is First Fragment - Soif brûlante (drum playthrough by Nicholas Le Fou Wells). Hope to see it on your channel mate!
Bill Ward’s comments about Dio’s lyrics were very apt and certainly something I agree with him on. Geezer was a much better lyricist and certainly more “real” with subject matter. I always felt Dio was too melodramatic in everything he did. Overly theatrical and certainly loved the medieval fantasy genre in full cliché. Some people love it, but it’s just not my bag, baby! This album though was the best Dio album of all the bands he was in.
Hey andrew , have you thought about { you may have already } doing some phil rudd assessments/reviews ? Riff Raff is a great one if you want to . Dude is a human metronome.@@AndrewRooneyDrums

Yep, Vinnie & Carmine pronounce their surnames differently. This is Bill Ward playing… though he claims no memory of recording the album, as he was in such a bad way at the time
I think Bill was going for a new direction for this song, more straight-direct style and less swing/improv. This was the direction metal was taking at the time. You could hear it in bands like Judas Priest, UFO and Motorhead.
This is where I left Sabbath. Not a Dio fan. I think it would be cool if you could look at some Keith Moon. The video from The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus is killer with them doing a Quick One While He's Away. Another cool guy to check out would be Mitch Mitchell. Maybe I Don't Live Today or Straight Ahead.
Brodie Bradley gave you some wrong information. This album is with Bill Ward. Vinny's first album with Black Sabbath was the Mob Rules album which was released after Heaven and Hell.
Like several top rated bands that found prominence in the 70's after forming in the 60's, Sabbath also appeared to want to 'evolve' to stay relevant with the 80's sound that was becoming iconic. Zeppelin has always looked to try new things and now others were following suit. Alice Cooper went 'solo' and dropped his band. ZZ Top re-invented themselves quite successfully and the Sabbath split, gave us 2 'new bands'. I guess KISS gets an honorable mention as well. As time went on I personally felt Sabbath had done too much 'damage' to their brand and most fans were loyal to the older songs. When Dio left to go solo, he took Appice (App eh see) with him and introduced us to Vivian Campbell - Amazing guitarist whom himself left Dio later on to join Whitesnake. Whew! All I want is great music, they can keep the drama.
It’s fascinating watching you have the same reaction to the new Sabbath sound we all had when it first came out. I love the Dio Sabbath stuff but nothing is better than the original Sabbath.
@@shspurs1342 They had a record deal. The record company probably wouldn't allow them to change their name without counting it as a breach of contract and dropping them.
When are you going to return to Black Sabbath. I want to hear your thoughts on the song National Acrobat from the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album which I think was their peak album
Great as always, Andrew! One of the things I enjoy about your reactions is that you put in the homework and try to provide a good thoughtful analysis beyond, "I didn't like that" or "That was good." Bill Ward drummed on this album, but my understanding was that he was struggling personally with a lot of substance issues, including acid. The slowdown of the beat on this has always been a distraction to me, which didn't sound like it happened on live performances on this with Vinnie Appice (APP-eh-see). From what I've read, Iommi wanted Dio, which was resisted strongly by the band's manager at the time, until he was ultimately overruled. Interestingly, later on, Dio was replaced by the very underrated singer Tony Martin, and the drumming was taken over by another former member of Rainbow, the great Cozy (Colin Flooks) Powell, who unfortunately passed away in a traffic accident in 1998 going 104 mph (167 kph) in bad weather on the M4 in England at the age of 50. There has always been a big debate among fans as to which singer they prefer. The guitar playing by Iommi on this song is outstanding and is a classic.
Black Sabbath manager in 1980 was Don Arden father of Sharon Arden AKA Sharon Osbourne. Tony wasn't able to fire him! Ronnie James Dio formed his own band Dio and Ian g i l l a n became the lead vocalist for Black Sabbath for one year well Don Arden was still the manager for them. It wasn't until 1987 when Tony Martin became the vocalist on the Eternal Idol album. Who was replaced by Ronnie James Dio in 1992 who got replaced by Tony Martin in 1994 LOL. Good luck keeping up with that history never mind it Glenn Hughes was the vocalist for the 1986 album Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi 7th star. Haha!
@@mikeg.4211 Don Arden remained the manager during the born again album and tour, seventh star album and tour, the Eternal Idol album which was the last one for Warner Brothers records when they were finally able to get rid of manager, businessman Don Arden. Tony Iommi and cozy Powell signed with IRS records in 1989 for the recording of the Headless cross album when their management became miles Copeland III owner of IRS records and the brother of Stewart Copeland drummer for The Police.
You'd have to submerge yourself with the Dio era to really get a sense of what it really was about. I see the Dio era as a different form of Sabbath and truthfully, some of Tony Iommi's best guitar work is in this time period.
Bill Ward played the drums on the album but has said in interviews, he remembers nothing about recording the Heaven And Hell album. He must have been really out of it since the Ozz left, who was Bill's best friend.

Edit:
Ward came back after The Mob Rules to record Born Again with Ian Gillan on vocals and fell of the wagon early on during the tour and then dropped off the tour, replaced by Bev Bevan. That was the first Concert I ever went to back in 1983.. 7th row on the flor on Tony's side. Nassau Coliseum NY. It was Soo loud AF! Loudest music I ever heard in my life.
Thats Bill, Vinnie appears on the Mob Rules LP
Vinny has a very specific way of hitting hi-hats/ride on the kick beat.
The recorded studio version IS Bill Ward he left the band afterwards sometime during the tour.
Hi Andrew,Bill Ward plays the drums on this album.
And....for so many people Ronnie James Dio is a Metal God.Before he went to Sabbath,he was singer by Elf and Rainbow. After Sabbath he founded his own Band,DIO.
Greetings from Germany
Sorry for my english.😂
Thanks for the input!
And your English is great!
I have the same feeling for majority of songs of 70s Black Sabbath.I still can't believe 4 guys wrote this music. They are really a unique band
It's Bill Ward on drums on the album - he left after the recording. Vinnie Appice took over after that and played on every other Dio/Sabbath inluding Heaven and Hell (the band)
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Andrew’s long series of videos in which he’s
“discovered” Sabbath, during which I’ve come to appreciate Ozzy’s singing and lyrical contribution. Having said that…. Ronnie is a truly amazing vocalist and is my personal favorite hard rock front man of all-time. Definitely an apples to oranges comparison though.
Yup 2 completely different approaches to vocals
Cheers
It is bill Ward. I have a copy of this album in my CD collection. Bill Ward is the drummer on every track of this album.
A little slick for me. I like the more “rough around the edges (in a good way)” Sabbath.
Me too Christopher!
Bill Ward was on the album, 'Heaven And Hell'. He didn't leave the band til partway through the tour for that album.
Bill Ward is on the drums. Appice entered the band after the first leg of the tour when Bill decided to leave
Yes :)
Loving the Sabbath reactions and dives into the drumming, one drummer who is amazing live and would love to see your reactions to is Dave Lombardo of Slayer, songs like War Ensemble or South of Heaven at the Big 4 show in 2011 have some incredible work
Yup I did War Ensemble!
Watching this reminds me that you should do Stargazer by Rainbow with Cozy Powell (R.I.P.) on drums, Ronnie James Dio on vocals and Richie Blackmore on guitar.
Long live Dio, Bill Ward on the Studio version. Vinny on the Tour for the album, as well as the next one, Mob Rules.
It's Bill on Drums. I have the original album. Ronnie is great and a great human being but the original Sabbath line up is the classic line up. Everything else is another band. Love your channel ...
I agree totally. There's no way to duplicate what those 4 created with different players.
Please check out my fav Sabbath song “Dirty Women”.
Nice! Yup total different style
Right. They changed a lot of things with Heaven and Hell, also the riffing style, totally different song writing and Ronnie‘s fantasy lyrics. And they became more commercial, less artistically daring and more self aware. Because of all of these reasons they should have used a different band name imho.
@@wernermoritz882 I don't think they had a choice. Record deals are quite binding. Especially back in the 70's through the 90's.
@@lazarusnecrosis5869 You‘re probably right. I still don‘t like it, to me it is a different band with Tony and Geezer in it.
Tony Iommi IS Black Sabbath! ignorant Ozzy fanboyz are missing out on some great music.
Yes Vinnie Appice and Carmen Appice pronounced their last names differently. But for the record I believe that’s the great Bill Ward playing.
Vinnie Appice was the Dio´s drummer ... and well, Bill Ward return to Black Sabbath (with Ozzy on 1999)
omg i was just wondering when the heaven and hell reaction will be yesterday lmao WOOO
Bill Ward recorder the album but then left before the tour .
I'm sure it's already mentioned in the comment section, but they played the tempo change live as well.. slowed even more, live... IMO.
If you want to check out Sabbath w/Appice on drums, I would suggest "Falling Off The Edge of the World" from Mob Rules. Great job as always!
A review and post of “Godsmack - Batalla De Los Tambore” would be most excellent. Definitely a good one to groove to. Thanks!
Its Bill Ward on Heaven and Hell album.
Vinny took over during the tour
they also spray painted bill with gold paint then sprayed a clear coat on him as well.
Album produced by Martin Birch who also produced Deep Purple. Interesting to consider if Ian Paice was Sabbaths drummer back in the day....
Bill Ward played drums on this album. Later on, he claimed not to remember anything about the sessions.
this is the title track off one of the greatest metal albums of all time. heard this when i was maybe 13 (47 now) and it's literally been one of my top 5 albums ever since. think the tempo fluctuations are either punches or just an artifact of tape speeds on the mix down...
pretty certain it's Vinnie on the drums.
For me is this album Black Sabbath (and the "Mob Rules" too) and nothing else. Yes, different singer, but Black Sabbath it is.
Drew! Bill Ward did the drumming on the album. Vinnie joined afterward for the tour.
Listen to this and then listen to Mob Rules (the album), there's such a stark difference.
It's Bill Ward. Without question.
Appice is fine, but he's a bog slogger.
It's like the difference between Mitch and Buddy playing behind Jimi.
actually Bill Ward was still drumming on this album...
YUP
Check out song called Die young from this album,if you haven't already..
If you check out the back of the album sleeve, it's definitely Bill Ward. Vinnie did the tour
On the album sleeve it says Bill Ward was the drummer. The next album Mob Rules Vinnie Appice is the drummer
Great music but a totally different band, and let's not even talk about the post-Dio era 😅🤣
And Dio is one of the best metal vocalists ever. You should totally check out a couple more songs from this album, it's a good one.
Bill Ward did the all the drumming on the LP. Appice appeared later.
Can you give a listen to "jazz sabbath" rat salad any many other classic songs would be Awesome to see your reaction much respect 👍🇬🇧
Look at the back of the album cover it will tell you who is in the band and they're on the back cover
Hey Andrew, here's another metal request for ya. The song I'm talking about is First Fragment - Soif brûlante (drum playthrough by Nicholas Le Fou Wells). Hope to see it on your channel mate!
Appice is " Appitchè" its italian.
They did prononced Appees and Appessey for americans that struggle a lot with Romances languages spelling .
just saw neil peart checking the 30th anniversary dw drum kit. just soloing.
This album though was the best Dio album of all the bands he was in.
drums aside, how is that base line when the tempo picks up ....furious ...and iommi shredding one of Sabbaths greatest tracks.
🙌
Hey andrew , have you thought about { you may have already } doing some phil rudd assessments/reviews ? Riff Raff is a great one if you want to . Dude is a human metronome.@@AndrewRooneyDrums
Appice was drummer in Vanilla fudge he claims when opening for Zeppelin in 68 that's where Bonham got the triplets from watching Appice play take in for what it's worth Appice played on the tour when ward's left the studio version is ward
They were around decades before that. I'm guessing Bonham heard them on jazz records
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Vanilla Fudge released their first album in 1967. Toured with Led Zeppelin in 1968. Carmine a p p i c e was a big influence on John Bonham. A p p i c e born 1946 Bonham born 1948. Vinny was 23 years old when he joined Sabbath born 1957. Bonham mentioned to a p p i c e about how he liked his triplets to which he replied he wasn't even aware of them. The jazz/ Funk drummer is Bernard p u r d i e John Bonham also admired him.
When Ronnie joined they should have changed. There name to a least Sabbath.
Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules are fantastic albums and I am an old school Sabbath fan
I must stringently disagree. The three Dio era albums are hands down the best. Frankly, I think Ozzy is heavily overrated.
Didn't like it then still hate it 40+ years later. Anything called Sabbath without Ozzy is crap.
More Sabbath comin' this week Tony!
I need to go through in album order and hear the evolution. Fascinating stuff Mike. Thanks!
Haha!
@@richardhincemon9423 I see after looking back that Arden was overruled, but his contract was not terminated at that time.
@@richardhincemon9423, yes.
The difference in tom sound may have come from the sound engineer, Martin Birch? I think this was the first time he engineered a Sabbath album.
Andrew, you mentioned the production,it was produced by martin Birch but Bill does not remember making this album bc of drugs and alcohol.
You should react to Ingo schwichtenberg Eagle Fly Free drum cam video, would be pretty cool he was the original drummer for the powermetal band Helloween
One of the songs ever!!
