I honestly didn’t know you could teach this-generalizing road boundaries. Invaluable and you probably will save some pet lives because of it! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Great video and thank you for taking the time to make it. People want to be nit-picky in comments of your IG and say to "leash them" but there are PLENTY of real life situations and factors that are constantly happening around us! Better to be safe than sorry.
What happens if lead breaks which happened to me and my dog ran onto the road got hit by a car that’s why we must train are animals every day and people that share there knowledge for free for the live of all animals must be commended thank you for sharing
If you are in control of the situation you should leash your dog. Off leash training should only be done in confined areas. I appreciate this video too but he is breaking the law
I agree. Yes it can be unsafe and unwise to have your dog off leash (I live in an apartment and it makes me mad when my neighbor only lets their reactive german shepherd outside off-leash…). But sometimes “just leash your dog” doesn’t fix the issue. I always walk with my dog leashed when I’m in the complex, and he will pull me if he really wants to go somewhere, including the road. I’m going to continue working on boundaries with him. This video is great, on or off leash! Just have to apply it to yourself and your dog the way it works for you both, and the area you’re in.
Exactly! You can leash your dog every single time, but that won't help you if your leash or collar breaks, your dog slips his collar, someone leaves the front door or fence gate open, etc. Accidents happen and relying solely on a leash is asking for trouble.
This one is super helpful, thank you! I regret that I didn't think of teaching dogs about this earlier, hope they'll catch up despite their age and background. Will start training this evening.
I still don't know till now why my Malinois was attacked driving cars on the street . But this was an obsession for him . We were spending a thousand pounds on training. No successful. One day, he was hit by car . Even this doesn't stop him . Additional bills to pay. We even stopped to walk with him outside, or we were chosen earlier morning or late evening for walking. Decided to change trainer. Change collar that the first. Was that simple step but successfully for the first time. No one ever from training saying about your technics. He's 95% better on stret right now, but it's still easily distracted by loud cars , cats, dogs, or shouting . I will definitely try this. Hope all dogs will be safe from road cose even little is enough to found our dogs under the wheel 😢
This video is awesome! I totally agree with you on understanding that bad things can happen on the road. My dog's is very obedient and very good at strolling with a loose leash and sticking to the sidewalk. But last week, he saw a cat, pulled a Houdini act getting himself off the leash, and chased the cat into the street. I was screaming my lungs out to bring him back. I can't stop thinking about what could've happened if a car had come by then. It's super important for them to get that they can't cross that line under any circumstances, no matter how stimulating the other animal is to them.
I absolutely love your training methods and your videos. This is how I trained 40 years ago. My only criticism is your release word. I always taught people to choose something other than ok because it's used too much in regular conversation, especially if you have the dog on PLACE. What has been your experience?
Your videos are so helpful! I love your clarity of explaining the WHY and then the HOW. I will get started on training not to step in the road without permission.
I have been working for ages to teach my dog road boundaries. It's led to SOME behavior that's more careful and paying attention before crossing roads etc with me but she's not PERFECT at it. Some solid tips here (and she's always on leash, but training boundaries like this is good.)
Thank you im getting a puppy soon and i have a dirt road right intront of our gate and right to broth left and right lead to roads that vehicles use a lot and more to the right theres a big main road that we have to cross to get to the park and the the road is often crowded with fast vehicles and even i hesitate to cross it without someone else.
I soooo love your style. All of it. We are a multiple dog household. One of us does similar training and the other treats them like babies. Try as I may, I can't get her to believe that it's crucial to let them feel consequences in order to learn. Same with a cat. You don't want the cat to bolt outside? Shake an empty can of coins the second the cat goes near the open door. I guarantee that cat will stay away from a open door. It's not mean-spirited. It's to save your cat's life some day. How many are lost and never come home? Tough love. It's necessary.
If you teach a good "leave it" command you can generalize that command to those situations. The key is to add in that punishment for when they don't obey your leave it because you're "leave it"should be a very powerful command. Just like any other thing that you teach your dog start off easy and work your way to something hard that is hard to ignore you start off with something that's not so difficult for them to leave alone maybe just a piece of their food and teach them the behavior with that. Only when they truly understand the leave it command you actually use it in a scenario where it is something that you absolutely need them to leave.
thank you so much!! my family’s backyard doesn’t have any fences and is right next to the road. our current dog understands road boundaries (no idea how, she just does) but we were looking at adopting another dog and this has been a major concern
dude this is so sick. you are an excellent trainer! i wish i could book you for some one on one with my pups haha. thank you so much for making these videos! i'm about to learn so much.
Thank you so much for this concise and informative video. We’ve just moved onto a very busy street with our 2 dogs and I’ve been very worried about them getting out and running onto the road. I’ve been training them to always wait when the front door opens with great success but wanted to solidify their road safety even more. Thanks so much!
I HAVE A 4 MONTH OLD GERMAN WIRED HAIRED POINTER AND I TAKE HIM LONGBOERDING, I DONT WANT HIM PULLING ME AT THIS AGE, but i don't feel comfortable holding the keash due to past incedents, i have tried off leash, but he only stays on side walk when i am close to the curb. he runs across the road when ever he wants and i take responsibility for that for letting a puppy with some off traing off leash. this was very helpful on teaching him to stay on the side walk, also i feel alot better about letting him off leash in my neighborhood. i see people in my neibor hood do this and i thought they were so cool,i will be the coolest 12 yr old in my nieborhood. thx
Thank you so much for making this video. I got a dog last year, and I live right off of a highway so I'm super paranoid about him getting hit by a car, and I rarely let him outside off leash. I'm definitely gonna start training him this weekend. This video made it super clear and super easy to understand, so once again thank you so much!
I love this and will be adding this to my training sessions with my dog. He's not fully off lead yet (in parks) but mastering this would give me more peace of mind that if he got spooked and ran off or chased a squirrel that I would feel better knowing he would avoid crossing a road. Thank you so much for sharing. I'm really enjoying your videos.
I've always done it the way you said and your right it doesn't work😅and I noticed it wasn't working but wasn't sure of what else to do.She's never left my yard yet, but I still don't trust her enough bass off my training to risk her well-being. Even though she must have learned SOMETHING because she has gotten out a few times before, but never leaves driveway or front yard😅so im so glad you did this video, now I can teacher her properly so I don't have to worry anymore thanks😁
Thank you for uploading to youtube, and making this free for all to view. Very helpful video, technique and explanation / reasoning behind it. Just wondering what collar/leash you use / would recomend during these training sessions. Prong collars are illegal where we live, and usually i do training sessions with my highly reactive dog with a slip lead (using a quick pop / flick of the wrist when required for marking undesirable behaviour, never allowing tension to be kept on the lead. thank you so much for this. i've had such a problem with my dog running off and into roads when off leash. this was sooooo helpful! i can't wait to start this training!
Dude that last example where you show your personal dog is amazing. My dog would just run for it but we will try this method. The problem comes when dealing with places which don't have curbs and do have cars (mountain roads or sandy roads near a beach) . How do I teach her to be mindful of cars themselves, and not curbs? I've seen some street dogs knowing this and would love her to be that smart 😁
Thank you so much for sharing this training! We`ve tried many things after our parents (without our knowing) would take a dog for a walk and make it cross with the cheese in front of her face (she was scared to cross, which was actually way better). 3 years down the road, she is pulling in 60% cases before the crossing. Will apply your recommendation now!
This is amazing! Saw it on Instagram first and this is really an issue for me and my new dog so this came at the right time. I will definitely try these training methods. Funny thing is that he is the exact same breed like the one in the video so I hope he will learn just as fast as this dog did :D
Hamilton! I live off a somewhat busy country road. If I train using these methods in, say, a culdisac with grass and asphalt where it’s more calm, would it carry over to our specific road where there’s grass meeting the busy asphalt country road? Or do I need to try to train my dog on the exact road in front of our house?
Does that same technique work also, when I don't have a sidewalk on my road? It has only white marks on the ground, but it isn't a real sidewalk where you can step on or off.
Thank you! What if there are no sidewalks in my town? My dog is used to walking on the side of the street, but doesn't know the difference between the side and the middle of the street, and neither with our entrance wich is also in asphalt.
I never punished. Once my dog was running out towards the gate, after a squirrel. I screamed nearly breaking my vocal chords. Attention. Viens ici She did stop, and come back ! That day she understood the boundaries. The same shouting also stopped her from jumping off the wall of a fort, with a very high invisible drop. I would never shout Attention (French) for nothing. This is a big issue for me in the UK. I live in the county often with no verge, let alone sidewalk. I've taught my BC 'pavement', and she gets back on the sidewalk. They have often been narrowed to 10cm(4inches) as the roadway has been widened. The safe walking place is often less well defined than in your city. I will adapt your techniques to this environment. Thank you for the video.
I am out rural usa, Zero sidewalks near me. Would have to drive 45 min get to the nearest town with any. 😅. But we do have miles of pavement free trails to walk
I often walk her off leash on bike lanes through forests. I'd be impossible to not walk on the tarmac at times, so I would like to teach her to sit in the verge as bikes approach. I can't seem to find any videos of this. What would be a good practice fort teaching tis? Tyia!
Can you help give me ideas to teach my dog yard boundaries?! I rescued a 10 month great pyrnees mix and she is very hard to train and not food motivated. She is very stubborn and will also lay down if she doesnt want to do something and she will not budge even when I pull with all my might.
Thanks so much for the video! My puppy ran into the street a few weeks ago (thankfully she was fine but she most got hit) and it's been causing non stop anxiety ever since. Do you think you could make videos on teaching a dog to respect social cues or other dogs? My puppy has terrible social skills despite getting corrected by my older dog constantly and going to the park 💀
Awesome video and thank you so much for making it. However I have one small question. We have a 1.5 year old Romania mix breed - Mioritic shepherd dog. In our neighborhood a lot of people throw food for stray cats and dog, so among the first things I had to teach our dog was to not eat from the floor( which is going very well. same principle throw on the floor and stop him from eating it) . But now if I want to try the same method you showed in your video to get him to jump in the street and stop him, it doesn't work. The same goes for toys ( he doesn't have a big drive for toys). What else can I use in order to make him try to jump in the street and stop him? Any idea would be great.
thank you for making this video, I had just been using "sit" and "lets go" at curbs but I've noticed my dog only asks for permission while on leash. Just out of curiousity what type of collar are you using in this video? The dog seemed so aware of any small correction you gave.
It's important to note that it looks like he's using a prong collar just behind the ears. Which is what I use to train my pup. It doesn't hurt her but makes it uncomfortable and she responds very well. The key is also to place it just below the ears. Of course, this is only meant to be used during training. A regular collar or worse a harness for training will not yield the same results.
Question… how would you adjust training in rural / country areas? Like I’m assuming using where the grass and the road meets like a curb and side walk.. but when going on walks for me there is no sidewalks we typically have to walk in the road and when a car comes we get out of the road. So how would you adjust training there?
And,rightly so, if only positive happens on the sidewalk, what if a kids playing with a ball on the road and a ball is the dog’s positive fun thing ,it may think ,great I’ll play too, won’t work without knowing consequences of being on the road! Great explanation thanks
Well this video is amazing! Can you also make a video to teach dogs not pick up food in the kitchen? I sometimes drop food from the counter while cooking accidentally. It could be something toxic to dogs. My dog is usually watching me cooking and waiting for me to drop things 😅 when I drop something, I have to yell No! Stop! before he eats it...
This is great I need my dog to be afraid to leave my driveway he most likely will never be in the city my himself . Omg seriously you just helped me so much
What if the roads you are on have no sidewalks but are walking on the side of the roads themselves. My neighborhood is grass properties and road. So i go for walks on the road most of the time. How do you teach them to not go farther into the road
Live training instructions begin at aprx 09:00 minutes in. Great Big Thanks to the creator for posting this content!
I honestly didn’t know you could teach this-generalizing road boundaries. Invaluable and you probably will save some pet lives because of it! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Amazing trainer!🎉
Thank you for helping me to save Bo's life. 45 mph here. He has no fear. He ran into road, nearly got hit. 0 risk here. THANK-YOU ❤
This one is super helpful, thank you!
I regret that I didn't think of teaching dogs about this earlier, hope they'll catch up despite their age and background. Will start training this evening.
Breath of fresh air to get concise, proper dog training information! Looking forward to many more videos from you.
I came from the TikTok video you posted and I’m not disappointed at all. So clear and helpful thank you for educating us :)
Liked and fkn subbed. This channel deserves a ton more

This video was so awesome! All your videos are great. Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much for this video. I couldn’t understand how to stop my dog running to the road, she had zero fear. Now we gonna work on that

I can’t thank you enough for this!!!
Thank you so much for making this video! Just used it today with my 8 month old Lab, and 12 year old Border Collie.

Thankyou so much great ideas. I will implement to save my pups life.
I’m loving your videos. You explain things very clearly - I just wish you were in Australia to come & help me out 😆
Thank you for uploading to youtube, and making this free for all to view. Big thanks to yourself, tom davis and will atherton for regulary posting content on hoe to properly use these training devices). I presume you are not using a regular collar and lead here, to make the pressure "punishment" more effective? If it is a prong, what do you recomend for places where prongs are banned, would a martingale chain, slip lead or something else be best? Thank you
thank you so much for this. i've had such a problem with my dog running off and into roads when off leash. this was sooooo helpful! i can't wait to start this training!
Dude that last example where you show your personal dog is amazing. My dog would just run for it but we will try this method.

Oh this is a good question
I never punished. Once my dog was running out towards the gate, after a squirrel. I screamed nearly breaking my vocal chords.
Attention. Viens ici
She did stop, and come back !
That day she understood the boundaries.
The same shouting also stopped her from jumping off the wall of a fort, with a very high invisible drop.
I would never shout Attention (French) for nothing.
We positive only people can do it too because our relationship of trust is stronger
Tutorial starts at 7:54
And? I am sure that, like myself, many people appreciate the theory behind the practice.
Thank you for this video! What type of leash do you use for this training?
Great video!
Bro, you need 1 mil subs right now. Excellent!
Great video. What kind of collar are you using?
Thankss great video, very usefull
Thanks u veryy much ... now my dog finally understood the floor is lava game ... he always used to mess up with the rules

Great video! What treats do you use?
Super!❤
will a dog whistle work in place of a collar?
Are you using a slip lead to apply pressure? A lot of people recommend for my dog.
Do I need a collar or will a harness be ok
Excellent.
I often walk her off leash on bike lanes through forests. I'd be impossible to not walk on the tarmac at times, so I would like to teach her to sit in the verge as bikes approach. I can't seem to find any videos of this. What would be a good practice fort teaching tis? Tyia!
I love it! I’m going to implement this into my training programs! Thanks dude

Great video, thanks!
This is great I need my dog to be afraid to leave my driveway he most likely will never be in the city my himself . Omg seriously you just helped me so much
Amazing, thanks
What equipment do you use as far as collars when leash training? Do you use a martingale style collar or a prong collar or just a regular collar?
Did you also use the e-collar to train the first dog in the video?
Awesome technique
Absolutely fantastic video!!! Subscribed indefinitely as of today !!LOL
How do you train this for streets without sideways since there isn't an obvious boundary?
What if the roads you are on have no sidewalks but are walking on the side of the roads themselves. My neighborhood is grass properties and road. So i go for walks on the road most of the time. How do you teach them to not go farther into the road
are you using one of those spiky collars or just a regular leash?
