    so true!! And sometimes watermelons look so perfect but are gross inside :/

  • @nolongerwoman5714

    Little correction. As someone who has grown watermelons. The yellow spot is actually the opposite of being exposed to sunlight. The yellow spot (or sometimes white spot : avoid those they're watery) is the part of the watermelon that was laying on the ground while growing. The green comes from photosynthesis which can only happen with sunlight. The spot doesn't get that, so it isn't green and instead it's yellow or white

    • @NotYourLaila
      @NotYourLaila 2 роки тому +193

      Thats what i was thinking because my father taught me this long ago that the yellow spot means the melon has been sitting on the ground!! 🙂

      @@NotYourLaila Yeah. But it's a common misconception. I've hear a lot of people saying that, but I guess that's what happens. One person says something that's wrong, someone else hears it and then there's misinformation all over. But it's fine. In this case it was just a watermelon after all

    I work in produce and everyone has an opinion on what makes a good watermelon. Other than what she said about choosing a dense watermelon that feels heavy (juicy) it is not really feasible to choose a sweet watermelon from it's exterior. I used to have to cut them for sale and identical watermelon from the same bin could have totally different interiors. It's honestly luck of the draw but scarring on the outside and a lopsided shape absolutely do not effect the taste so don't turn down your nose at an "ugly" watermelon. It's just a waste. We throw away too much "ugly" food in the US and it's all perfect for eating!

      Naw. It's usually where a vine or stem has been over it.
      Like it bloomed and as a tiny melon it developed under the vine. Melon/ pumpkin/ squash vines are very rough/prickly things and will be slightly pokey.
      I wear gloves and long sleeves while digging through the patch as I have very thin skin and the prickles irritate my hands and skin.
      Lots of times you will not find these types of fruits in supermarket as most people won't buy one with "flaws" even tho they are 100% fine.
      Some of the best tasting tomatoes will never been found in stores as they are so homely looking.
      Lumpy and bumpy and weird shaped and we haven't even gotten to the colors. Lol. I grow a purple tomato with green shoulders and its slightly lobed so its never perfectly round. It has thin skin so it doesn't ship well but the flavor when you eat it is pure heaven. Rich and juicy with the right amount of sweet and savory umami. But is the color of a wicked bruise lol Okay im heading to the kitchen. Lol.
      Oh its black brandywine. I have pink brandywine too which is a lovely rosy pink color

      @@cherrysoyaa8933 not really, for watermelon you want it to be juicy and sweet, the stuff that makes watermelon sweet is fructose- which is colourless or white and can be dissolved into water. The stuff that make watermelons red is lycopene, which is completely separate from fructose. Having high lycopene doesn’t cause high fructose.

    What? The yellow spot is yellow because that part has been facing the ground. The reason the melon is green is because of photosynthesis, photo as in “light”.
    Presumably the spot starts off a paler colour and gets more yellow as the fruit ripens, but it’s not because it’s hit by the sun, if anything it’s the opposite.
    The webbing isn’t from bees pollinating the flower. The fruit grows from behind the sepal, the bees don’t even touch that area. The webbing is scarification likely from damage caused by external forces, or maybe even growth. Not bees…

    There was this elderly farmer that used to live on our street, he lived alone and he would distribute watermelon, cabbage, carrots, cucumber, etc...whatever was in season, he'd just drive house to house giving them and talking a bit then leaving...heard he left back to Philippines when he got sick, dont know what happened, it's been almost 20 years.
